Expert Review

The “G” in the GLS stands for “geländewagen”, which is German for an off-road vehicle. The GLS is the SUV equivalent of Mercedes-Benz’s luxurious S-Class.

With the full size SUV market booming up, the revised GLS Class couldn't have come at a better time. However, since everyone has their eyes set on this segment, the GLS has many potent competitors. The 2020 Lincoln Navigator makes for a mean rival. With its beefy engine, the Navigator gives the GLS a tough standard. The Cadillac Escalade is also ready to butt heads with the GLS. Last but not least, the Land Rover Range Rover, carrying a similar engine to the GLS.

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 Features

The Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 makes 362 horsepower and 369 lb ft or torque from a 3L Inline 6 engine. The GLS 450 always had power, but with the revised looks, it makes a more appealing package.

The GLS 450 can be equipped with many packages. For our money, the "Driver Assistance Package PLUS" and "Mercedes-Benz Premier Service" package are attractive.

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 Engine

It comes as rather a surprise to think this hefty beast is powered by only a 6 cylinder. Up until now, the GLS has been powered by a V6 engine. However, for the year 2020, Mercedes decided to shake things up a bit. Powering the GLS this year is an Inline 6 engine coupled with a hybrid system. It is capable of producing 362 horsepower and 369 lb ft of torque. The Inline 6 brings with it certain benefits, like more low end throttle response for better performance, and more fuel efficiency.

Putting power to the wheels is Mercedes-Benz’s 9G-Tronic 9 speed automatic transmission. Mercedes uses this transmission in many cars of their lineups. The 9G-Tronic handles massive amounts of power and well and is relatively fuel efficient.

The tale of power in this class is pretty topsy turvy. The most expensive competitor, the Land Rover Range Rover, makes the least amount of power, and the least expensive, the Lincoln Navigator, makes the most power. The $91k costing Range Rover manages only 355 horsepower and 365 lb ft of torque from its twincharged Inline 6 engine. The Navigator produces 450 horsepower and 500 lb ft of torque. It makes most power despite not having the biggest engine of the class. The biggest engine is of the

GLS 450's 0-60?

The new inline 6 engine along with the hybrid system makes the GLS capable of good low end power. The hybrid handles the work until the turbocharger kicks in. All in all, a smooth delivery of power is presented to the driver. The hefty GLS accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds.

The Lincoln Navigator may have the most amount of power in numbers, but when it comes to being quick, the Mercedes Benz GLS Class dominates it, even if it is only by 0.1 seconds. The Costliest car of the bunch, the Land Rover Range Rover falls behind the class again, being the slowest with a 0-60 time of 6.2 seconds. The Cadillac Escalade and the GLS class are tied for first place.

How well does the GLS 450 corner?

The new Mercedes GLS handles well for its size. It doesn't feel incredibly large while driving. The low end response of the new engine is quite impressive, mainly thanks to the new hybrid system which eliminates the lag associated with a turbocharged engine. The cabin is well insulated from wind and tire noise and road vibrations are nonexistent for which its air suspensions can be credited. The air suspension system lets you raise or lower the GLS at will with a switch placed in the center console. The suspensions also minimizes body roll.

GLS 450's braking power?

While the official weight of the new GLS class hasn't been revealed yet, it is believed that the GLS will be 5500 pound-ish. Increasing the weight from last year, Mercedes-Benz decided to upgrade the brakes too. Armed with bigger brakes, the GLS class is ready to take on any on or off road challenge.

Out of the available brake sizes of the competitors, the GLS has the largest front brakes. Its rear brakes are of the same size that of the Cadillac Escalade and slightly smaller than the Range Rover.

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 Fuel Economy

Mercedes’ decision to change to an inline 6 engine with a hybrid system instead of the old V6 engine lets them boost the fuel economy of the new 2020 GLS class. This decision allowed Mercedes to maintain its power figures while getting a 17% better fuel economy. The GLS now has a combined average of 21 mpg. The GLS class now holds a fuel economy of 19 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway.

The result of Mercedes’ revision is clearly visible. The GLS class, with its new powertrain, has the best in class fuel economy. The Land Rover Range Rover follows the GLS class in second place with a combined average of 19 mpg. The Lincoln Navigator is a close third and the Cadillac is the least efficient of them all.

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 Interior

Saying the interiors of the new 2020 GLS class are luxurious feels like a gross understatement. As one can imagine, the insides of the GLS is slathered with premium materials from the floor carpets to the headliner. It has been dramatically improved this year.

The front seats lather you with comfort. Made from premium materials and extraordinary finesse. The front occupant get dual zone climate controls with 3 air vents per occupant. The memory seat controls along with the power seat controls are conveniently placed on the door panel, eliminating the need to fumble around blindly for the controls below. The GLS also offers you an option to adjust the passenger side seat from the driver’s power seat controls.

Talking of the second row, instead of the standard 3 seat row, the GLS now comes with 2 individual captain’s chairs. These captain chairs have full power adjustments along with full power headrests. Power headrests is a luxury features are offered by the likes of Bentley or Rolls Royce. Power seat controls are placed on the side, on the door panel. Talking more of the second row, its individual 2 zone climate control adds to the convenience of the passengers. The center compartment underneath the climate control houses the charging ports. A standard USB C along with a full size household port.

Moving to the third row, let's first talk about moving into them. Access to the third row is tedious on the driver’s side. It is much more convenient to access from the passenger’s side. The Passenger side houses a switch near the headrest which folds the seat and brings it forward in one simple motion, creating a decent amount of space to enter the third row. Once back, the third row has tolerable space. Adults can survive relatively long journeys back here. The third row has a total of 4 USB C ports placed on the armrests along with the cup holders.

Other than the Range Rover, all the cars in this segment seat 7 passengers. Here too, the Lincoln Navigator comes up ahead. The Navigator has the most first and second row space. While the Escalade has decent first and second row space, the leg row it offers on its third row is embarrassing. The GLS offers the most amount of headroom in its third row but the Cadillac takes the cake on the shoulder room.

How is the new MBUX infotainment system?

The all new MBUX infotainment system offered by Mercedes becomes the most prominent component of the center dash. The MBUX allows you to control using one of three input options. You can use it as a touchscreen, you can use a trackpad placed in the center console or a small trackpad cursor placed on the steering wheel. The responsiveness of this system is spot on, especially the touchscreen. This system is coupled with a Burmester Premium with 13 total speakers and 2 Subwoofers.

How big is the trunk of the GLS 450?

The cargo area in the GLS is riddled with features. Well, at least as far as cargo areas go. For starters, the cargo cover can extend far beyond the cargo area. The purpose of the extra cargo cover is if one needs to store more cargo after folding the seats down. Folding down the seats to extend the cargo storage area is very simple. Mercedes has placed buttons at the back which drop an entire row on one push. Both the second and third row can be folded. The same buttons can be used to raise the seats back up. Another button available in the cargo space is for lowering the entire GLS down, for loading heavy objects which cannot be raised too high.

The Lincoln Navigator takes the win again. With a space of 20.9 cubic feet and 103.4 cubic feet when the seats are folded, the Navigator has impressed us. The Range Rover has respectable cargo space, but the increase in storage space when the seats are down isn't all that much.

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 Exterior

While the proportions of the GLS have remained somewhat the same from the last model year, the exterior styling has been updated. The new updated look has thoroughly refreshed the entire car. Starting with the front fascia, the front grille is bigger which looks quite aggressive and eye catching. The headlights are more quadrilateral in shape as opposed to the lotus petal shaped headlights before.

From the side, the entire silhouette has changed. The GLS has abandoned its boxy look now is curvier and seems more rugged.

While the silhouette of the rear has mostly stayed the same, its components have been altered. The taillights have been redesigned. They are now sleeker and the designs in them has been changed. The rear looks much wider now. The rear bumper along with the rear diffuser has been changed to complement the redesigned lift gate.

The new GLS now actually has the rugged look of an SUV in place of the station wagon look it used to have earlier.

Much isn't known of the GLS yet, such as its ground clearance. For an off roader, it needs to be able to compete with the likes of the Lincoln Navigator, with 9.6 inches of ground clearance. As of now, the GLS leads in having the widest wheelbase.

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 Safety

The GLS is the SUV equivalent of the S-Class. What that means is that Mercedes has packed the GLS with a lot of safety features. Features like active braking assist, blind spot, and lane departure warning, ABS and anti-theft alarm are standard features that can be found. Along with that Mercedes offers the following features:

  •  Trailer stability control
  • A surround view system
  • 11 way air bags
  • Downhill speed regulation
  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Crosswind assist

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 Competition

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS Class vs 2020 Lincoln Navigator

The new Lincoln Navigator pushes the GLS to its edge. It dominates the class in power, speed and cargo space to say the least. In cabin space, the Navigator again gives a tough competition. The GLS has its own virtues. The brand value associated with its name has a certain flash to it. Not only that, the GLS also provides far better luxury and comfort features, and while the Navigator is quicker, the GLS isn't that far behind.

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS Class vs Cadillac Escalade

While the escalade may be one of the biggest names in the SUV market, it cannot compete with the GLS Class’ luxury and features. On paper, the Escalade has better numbers. A bigger engine, producing more power, but the GLS is just as quick as the Escalade. The GLS offers better cabin space and fuel economy, and thanks to its smaller engine, it offers better emission ratings.

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS Class vs 2020 Land Rover Range Rover

By now it is pretty clear that being more expensive doesn't always promise a better car. The 2020 Range Rover is the only car in the segment which seats 5 people instead of 7. It also has been trailing the competition in almost every segment thus far. For our buck, the GLS is an obvious choice.

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 Final Verdict

Being the S Class SUV is self explanatory. The GLS Class not only offers comfort and premiumness, but it also power and speed whenever demanded. The masterful construction, elegant features and now couple that with a premium design makes the GLS a tough package to beat. Whether its is rummaging in the sand, or it is gliding on the road, the GLS is ready to deliver an exponential experience any day.
