The Crossover segment has to be the most exciting segment of this decade and luxury brands are relying heavily on crossover sales and products like the GLC are crucial to the brand’s success. That said, it's not like the competitors have been sitting twiddling their thumbs, the Mercedes SUV faces neck and neck competition from other luxury SUVs such as the BMW X3 with a new pitch-perfect makeover, the Jaguar F-Pace, and none other than the Porsche Macan

The Mercedes GLC is the brand premium compact crossover that claims to deliver C-Class levels of performance and luxurious in a practical and elegant crossover package. However, does the Mercedes Benz GLC 300 justify the starting price of $40,700? For starters it comes with a 2.0 liter turbocharged inline 4 engine powering all the wheels by the 4Matic system. Along with the smooth ride quality, the GLC also delivers thrust across a wide powerband. You'd be hard-pressed to find any flaws with this one with the list of safety features crammed in the SUV.

2019 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class Engine and Performance

7.6/10

Underneath the GLC 300 SUV, the soul of the crossover is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine with a direct injection that churns out 241 horses and 273 pulling forces. Its engine is refined but can occasionally get audibly loud. Married to a 9-speed automatic transmission and a rear-wheel-drive system, its gear shifts seamlessly make their way up or down the cogs.

In its competition, the GLC 300 stands few ponies behind its rivals. The Volvo XC60 is the most powerful in the class while the remaining competitors have almost a similar power.

Acceleration

Quite a performer despite a less powerful engine, the Mercedes GLC 300 takes 6.4 seconds to accelerate from 0-60 MPH. The rival with this acceleration, the 2019 GLC 300 is still holding its place amongst the competition. It is quicker than the F- Pace and runs on par with the Range Rover Velar and the Macan. However, BMW is the quickest in the class seconded by the XC60.

Handling and Braking

Offering two dynamic driving modes, a la Normal mode and the Sport mode where the serene driving mode allows responsive steering and comfortable ride while the athletic mode stiffens the ride and allows comparatively more responsive steering, however, the feedback is still limited in both modes.

With the kitted 4Matic system, it maneuvers with ease even in the steepest of turns while still maintaining its stability. Run it over bumps or potholes, the crossover gracefully tackles the wobbles and jiggles with poise. The Mercedes gloats like a luxury crossover and rightfully carries the claim.

The Mercedes Benz GLC comes equipped with 13.4" and 12.5" disc brakes in the front and rear. Having a relatively lightweight structure and huge brakes, the crossover stands at an advantage when braking in an emergency.

2019 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class Interior

8.5/10

Inside, the Mercedes GLC is as luxurious as the rest of the SUVs in its class while remaining roomy. While not as tall which does hinder headspace for tall people in the back seat due to the SUV-sloping roofline, but the welcome abundance of legroom along with the cabin. Supreme comfort with luxury abound, the GLC promises to keep the needs and wants of the opulent packages found in its luxury lineup.

The cabin impressively cancels noise from the outside, remaining the ever-plush crossover the marque markets it. Technologically filling, it also has great luxury features inside.

2019 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class Exterior

8.5/10

The Mercedes Benz GLC 300, though looks small and has a lightweight, looks quite bulky and beefed up on the sides. Flanked by LED headlamps with the large Silver Arrow insignia resting in the center, the crossover embraces curvy lines and hard design elements. With large fenders sheltering atop 19" wheels, the SUV is undoubtedly handsome and defined.

There is an evident conventional overtone to the whole sculpt of the body alongside a sweet roofline that tucks itself down to the rear. Weighing 4000 pounds, the crossover is lighter than most of its rivals and is also more compact as well as incorporating a longer wheelbase.

2019 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class Competition

8.9/10

2019 Mercedes Benz GLC 300 vs BMW X3

If you're looking for sportiness, go for the BMW X3. Like the GLC, the X3 is also capable of delivering a smooth ride, but it's engaging handling makes it a better option. Also, it is better than the GLC in most of the aspects and is also quite an economic option. Still, you can always go for the Mercedes GLC if you want to go for a compact and supple ride and are fond of luxurious interior cabins.

2019 Mercedes Benz GLC 300 vs Porsche Macan

The Porsche Macan is a year older than the GLC 300 for quite some time. This year with the all-new 2nd generation Macan in the competition, the stakes on Mercedes are quite high. Although most of the specs for the all-new Macan are not yet available, of those available, it looks like the Mercedes GLC runs on par with the Macan this year. It is also quite luxurious and less expensive than the Macan. Still, if you want a sportier ride you can go for the Macan

2019 Mercedes Benz GLC 300 vs Volvo XC60

The XC60 will be completing a decade in the market soon and hence knows the market quite well. Moreover, it has just been 3 years for the GLC in the market and it still needs to learn to take a stand in the market. It lags in a majority of aspects when compared to the Volvo XC60. So, although their price range is similar, the consumers would prefer the one that offers the most.

2019 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class Final Verdict

The 2019 Mercedes Benz GLC 300 is quite a good SUV crossover for a supple ride. It is also filled with many luxury features. However, its competitors who are offering more for a lower price make it a bit difficult for this young SUV to survive. So looks like it's time for the GLC to buck up.
