Ever come across a competition, wherein you’d have to compare a Crossover with a hatchback. The old GLA- Class used to do just that with the similarly designed A-Class hatchback. Its demeanor was neither of an SUV nor a crossover as it was neither Luxurious or spacious inside as you might want a Mercedes to be.

Thankfully, Mercedes have bought us some respite with it’s newly launched GLA, for which you’ll happily enough pay the extra premium if it means you get that Spacious interior you deserve for that price tag.

Mercedes have gone a while without having to bring in updates or high-end technology Features as Standard and therefore has kept it as optional which is a let-down. With Hatch-back like dimensions and SUV-like utility and higher seating position, the newer generation GLA250 SUV has despite all these vague negatives come out with a decent machine.

Which Trim should you go for?

With more or less the same feature list, and no addition in that area, the 2000$ difference in the trims is because of the mind-Blowing acceleration figures and the All-Wheel Drive setup. If that is a major metric parameter for you while buying one, go for the GLA 4MATIC, or else we would recommend you to go for the base GLA250

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class Engine and Performance

4.8/10

The Base GLA 250 comes with FWD, whereas the 4MATIC trim comes with AWD. The turbo 2.0-Liter inline-four Cylinder engine makes 208 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque when mated to a 7-speed automated Transmission. Mercedes has not fiddled with the engine in the GLA but has bought certain minor changes where needed. The identical transmission setup has not brought about any change for the GLA250 which, therefore, you wouldn’t witness any bump in it's driving characteristics

All the Suv’s in this lot come fitted with the same 2.0-Liter Inline 4 cylinder engine. The Evoque basically has sports SUV like characteristics with its incredible performance characteristics. The GLA250 comes a close second in terms of packing power. Lexus’s CVT takes all the fun out of driving it and hence eats up most of its power, thus making it the least powerful of the bunch.

How quick is it from 0-60?

The Base GLA 250 does a decent time of 7.2 seconds from 0-60 while crossing the quarter-mile mark at 12.5 seconds. In Comparison, the 4MATIC GLA 250 manages to do it in a mind-boggling 5.8 seconds, which is a rarity in a sub 300 hp car. The launch control feature and the AWD is a big help in achieving this.

Lexus comes last in terms of acceleration times mainly because of its timid engine. Although the Range Rover Evoque is in a completely different league altogether as it manages to achieve a time of 6.0 seconds from 0-60.

How well does it handle?

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class SUV Rear View

There is a bit of body roll while going around corners. This is mainly due to its raised height which is almost 6-inches taller than the A-Class. But nevertheless, apart from that, the ride is mostly responsive and sharp. The GLA does not pack a punch, mainly because of its slightly less responsive throttle as it’s eagerly waiting to remind you that the GLA is not a sports car. One would think, that as this is an SUV, the suspension would be forgiving enough while riding on rough roads, but that is not the case here. The Suspension is surprisingly firm.

What about the braking performance?

SUVs, with their ability to carry all that weight around, it is imperative to equip it with brakes that bring these big vehicles to a halt. The GLA250 is equipped with 12.6-inch rotors in the front and 11.6-inch rotors in the rear. These brakes manage to bring the GLA250 to a complete halt from 60 MPH in 120 feet.

The Volvo gets equipped with the largest rotor brakes in this bunch. At 12.8-inches, the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque’s rotors are only a tiny bit smaller than the Volvo XC40. Even though Lexus comparatively weighs lesser than most of its competition apart from the Merc, it takes the longest distance to stop, solely because of it’s smaller rotor discs.

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class Fuel Economy

6.6/10

When it comes to fuel economy, the inline engines are believed to be better than a V or a flat configuration. The base Model GLA250 with Front-wheel drive gets 24 miles to the gallon in the city and 34-miles to the gallon on the highway. The performance-oriented AMG GLA gets an estimated 22/28 mpg city/highway.

The Lexus manages to be the most efficient of the lot, with figures of 29 MPG in the city and 37 MPG on the highway and a combined mpg of 33. Nevertheless, all the competition’s more or less are on par with each other in terms of fuel efficiency.

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class Interior

As soon as you open the door, what welcomes you inside is a beautifully mastered Mercedes logo to remind you that you’re stepping into the legendary Mercedes cabin.

 Seating and comfort

So if technology and the feature-rich cabin isn’t the GLA- Class strong point!, What is?

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class SUV Front Seats

Some would argue Comfort, although they are not wrong in their perceptions as the standard man-made leather seats are supportive and come with plenty of adjustment options to make your journey as comfortable as possible. Although, the rear seats in the GLA feel a bit more sluggish in terms of Head and legroom in comparison to its competition.

If you’re expecting to take the GLA 250 on a long trip with four adults, it will be a tight squeeze. The rivals Volvo XC40 and Range Rover Evoque are far better in terms of passenger comfort and luxurious seating.

What are the Infotainment features on offer?

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto do not come as standard features for the GLA which is a huge letdown on Merc’s part.

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class SUV Infotainment Display

Some of the prominent features that the Mercedes Benz GLA 250 provides are-

  • Bluetooth Audio Streaming
  • HD Radio receiver
  • Central Controller and 8-inch color display
  • Hands-free Bluetooth interface
  • SiriusXM 6-Month All-Access trial*
  • COMAND Navigation*
  • Apple CarPlay*
  • Android Auto*
  • Harmon/Kardon LOGIC7 sound system

How much Cargo can take in?

The Mercedes GLA has the least cargo space of 17.2 cu-ft. It is also pretty decent to carry around your golf clubs and some light bags. You get small little cubby holes on each side to hook your shopping bags securely in a place. The Mercedes GLA’s back seats flip down in a handy two way (60:40) split so you can carry a passenger in the back and some long luggage in the boot at once.

6.6/10

If like us, you know your Mercedes, that huge infotainment screens, turbine shaft AC vents, shiny plastics, and the exterior as a whole is similar to that of the A-Class from the Merc’s line-up. This is not necessarily a bad thing, as the A-Class looks fantastic. There is one change that is drastic enough to seem like an SUV and not as a crossover. The GLA 250 sits at 6-inches taller than the planted down A-Class.

Its longer wheelbase does not necessarily lead to better cabin space in the rear, as the Rear cabin space is the worst of the bunch. It also has the longest wheelbase and the shortest ground clearance of the lot. Mercedes obviously wanted to design the GLA250 as a mild-sport SUV with luxury and comfort taking a back seat and hence the lighter Curb Weight.

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class Safety

Mercedes does offer a wide variety of comprehensive list of safety features. Driver assistance technologies are available but that too as optional packages. There is no question about the German’s reliability. Unfortunately, no crash-test ratings are available for the GLA250 from the NHTSA(National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), as it is too soon to go through a wall for Safety testing.

What are the Safety Features on offer?

Some of the key safety features on offer are-

  • ECO Start/Stop System
  • Active Brake Assist
  • Mercedes Benz Emergency Call
  • ATTENTION ASSIST
  • Adaptive Brake technology
  • LED Daytime running lights.

Mercedes Benz GLA250 vs Lexus UX 200-

Like it’s German adversaries, the UX combines characters of a big car into Subcompact Class. The hybrid powertrain itself gives the UX an edge in its class since nobody else offers one. Although It’s CVT takes up all the fun out of driving a car, we believe it’s really the best UX you can purchase. The overall performance of the GLA is much better than that of the Lexus UX.

2020 lexus UX 200

Mercedes Benz GLA250 vs Volvo XC40-

The Volvo XC40 sports a convenient design package with charm oozing out of its crossover dimensions. The Cabin is spacious and you definitely get into a groove which is found in most upscale Volvo’s. The XC40 beats the GLA250 in terms of acceleration times and cabin space. Overall to sum it up, the XC40 is priced less than the GLA 250. This is a serious thought to ponder upon as to which is better.

2020 Volvo XC40-

Mercedes Benz GLA250 vs Land Rover Range Rover Evoque-

The Range Rover Evoque features premium interior, modern powertrains and an exterior that is subtle yet stylish. The Mercedes GLA250 is nowhere near to the performance figures of Evoque. Not many SUVs can pave the way through rough roads as well as the Range Rover does. Mercedes has a long way to go in terms of showcasing its off-roading capabilities.

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class Final Verdict

With its sharp handling and easy maneuverability, the GLA250 is definitely a fun crossover to drive. Its turbocharged engine makes it agile. This is a very competitive segment per se and not a lot can be said about these cars which are very closely matched. But the Evoque is a little more advanced in terms of cabin space and performance figures. Overall, it’s a decent little Package at that price range.
