2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 Convertible Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Updated on: July 16, 2020

The AMG badge on the S-Class has been providing the epitome of luxury and performance. Expect no less from the 2020 S63 AMG Cabriolet. The engines that go into the AMG vehicles are handcrafted by the AMG division to provide the best performance vehicles in the market. The AMG engines dominate the performance segment and how we now know. The S63 Cabriolet boasts a twin-turbo 4 Litre V8 which is powerful enough to snap your neck.

The AMG spec Panamericana grille is heavily vented. The headlights house the daytime running LEDs. The vents below the headlights are an S-Class exclusive. These vents are more aggressive than the ones on all the other S-Class offerings and are an AMG exclusive as well. The AMG coupe and the convertible share the same body style. With the roof up the cabriolet looks similar to its coupe counterpart. The coupe is a better performer than the cabriolet as the open roof does compromise on the performance.

The AMG S63 Cabriolet is now the top of the line luxury performance offering from Mercedes. On the inside, you can experience the finest luxury on wheels that money can buy. This beauty is heavy on the pockets but worth every dime it costs. You wouldn’t feel like stepping out after spending time in it.

Merc has put a lot of bells & whistles in this monster. It weighs north of 4500 pounds which is pretty heavy. But you can't feel the weight of the car sitting behind the steering wheel and flooring the gas pedal.

The cabriolet’s soft-top drops in 20 seconds and can be pulled down till the speed of 37MPH. The roof can be pulled down with the Key as well. It simply looks incredible with the top down.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 Convertible Engine and Performance

6.5/10

The handcrafted AMG Engine in the S63 is like a hell-hound held by chains waiting to be unleashed. The Bi-Turbo 4.0L V8 is responsible for the monstrous power that defines the S63 as the best performer. It’s incredible to be behind the steering wheel, the performance of the S63 is a trip in itself.

2020 Mercedes AMG S 63 Convertible has 4L Engine

The 9-speed transmission is punchy and responsive producing exceptional performance. The transmission comes alive when the Sports or Sports+ mode is activated. Switching to these modes is like unleashing a beast within the S63. The car just propels like a rocket. The suspension gets lower and stiffer make it even more exciting to drive.

The Audi R8 comes with a V10 which is statistically bigger than the S63 but the AMG engine outperforms here. The AMG engine makes more horsepower and torque compared to all the other competitors. This proves that the AMG Engine is the best performance engine out there.

How Fast is it?

The AMG engine churns 603 horses and 664 lb.ft. of torque which is substantial in thrusting the S63 from a standstill to 60 miles in 3.4 seconds! That mind-boggling speed makes it one of the best performing drop-tops currently in the market. Mercedes limits the power that goes into the S63 with a speed limit of 155mph.

The Audi R8 despite holding the title of a supercar is just a fraction of a second faster than the S63. What have I been going on about the AMG? They are nothing short of magicians, it’s like they conjure spells on their engines before sending them out. The S63 is probably one of the most powerful convertible vehicles on offer.

How Responsive are the Brakes?

The AMG Performance Carbon-ceramic brakes on the S63 are equipped with enough braking power to bring the vehicle to a halt at high speeds. The Six-piston brakes can adequately assist in controlling the vehicle. The engine is quick and responsive and needs an equally capable pair of brakes. The AMG brakes ensure that the vehicle has enough confidence to cruise at high speeds.

60-0 distance isn’t available yet but the Merc has one of the biggest brakes. The AMG performance brakes and the curb weight might cut the stoppage time. From the available data, the R8 Spyder and the Porsche 911 Carrera 4 stop neck to neck and are the quickest to stop.

How Is The Ride & Handling?

The S63 AMG drives like a dream. The soft-top up filters all the outside noise and gives a quiet ride inside. The AMG rolls up in comfort mode with all responsiveness. The 9-speed transmission is possibly one of the most refined transmissions. You can feel the car is ready to respond to the gas pedal even in comfort mode.

The 4-Matic drivetrain of the S63 makes it more reliable while revving through the sharpest of corners. The car is steady and rooted to the ground. The seats can be adjusted to electronically move with the car in the direction of the turns. It’s like a real-life gaming experience where the seats move along with the car.

Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 Convertible has different drive modes

The different drive modes change the entire feel of the car. In Comfort mode, the suspensions feel softer. The suspensions stiffen in Sports & Sports+ mode. These changes make the AMG a perfect combination to drive out on a sunny winter morning or take it on the drag strip to blow off some steam. The AMG S63 is the benchmark vehicle from Merc and does drive like one too.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 Convertible Fuel Economy

6.0/10

It’s no question that the AMG engine is amongst the best performing engines in the world. But the question here is how fuel-efficient is it? Well considering how the current reform in the automotive industry is stepping towards more fuel-efficient vehicles and the S63 AMG despite being a performance vehicle is also fuel-conscious and delivers 24MPG on the highway. This is why the experts at the AMG division deserve to be lauded.

The Porsche 911 4 Convertible is the most fuel-efficient among the competition because of its 3.0L Flat-Six engine. The Mercedes has a bigger 4.0L V8 engine and produces much more power than the Porsche. S63 AMG provides a good fuel economy and has a large 21.1-gallon fuel tank which gives it a great range.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 Convertible Interior

7.5/10

The doors of the convertible open to a handcrafted 4 passenger cabin which exudes pure luxury. The quilted seats in the cabriolet feel like recliners more than car seats. The dashboard just flows unanimously merging with the infotainment system making it look like one large screen. The dashboard and the infotainment system are a pair of 12.3” LED screen. The steering wheel is a flat-bottom AMG steering wheel which is an S-Class exclusive.

The standard luxury features in the S63 prove that its the epitome of luxury offering from Mercedes. The neck warmer and heated massage seats make you feel like there’s a physiotherapist in the car. The Ambient Cabin lighting has 64 customizable colors. Another option called Energizing Comfort is probably one of the most premium features that the Merc has. The Mercedes perfume is mated to the Air Conditioners and the seats are heated and massaging options are pre-set to the Energizing Comfort option you select.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 Convertible Front Seats

In the rear, you get the 2 hand-crafted bolstered passenger seats. The soft top has an in-built rear cabin light. Mercedes has ensured that the passengers in the rear don’t have trouble settling down in the dark. The headroom in the rear is decent as well which can easily accommodate a person that’s 5’10 ft tall.

The S63 AMG is the most luxurious out of the lot and has better comfort. The BMW is equally comfortable but lacks the luxury features like massage seats. The S63 simply dominates in terms of sheer luxury and comfort.

The infotainment system can be controlled through touch or via the dial in the center console or a little touchpad which acts as a cursor. The infotainment system controls a lot of the creature comforts like the heating and massaging of the seats. The sound system by Burmester is amazing and accentuates the drive.

The Instrument cluster is a 12.3” inch screen as well. The cluster is 3-way customizable, the options available are Sports, Classic, and Progressive. The cluster is loaded with race tracks from around the globe for the Track Pace that records lap times and driver stats.

What about the Cargo carrying capacity?

If the S63 lacks something it might be the boot space. The trunk is good enough to fit a large suitcase and maybe a small duffel bag together. Most of the trunk space is taken up by the soft top that folds in the trunk.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 Convertible Exterior

7.5/10

The S63 AMG is one of the most aesthetically pleasing vehicles in the market at the moment. The AMG convertible is the longest amongst all its competitors. The AMG S63 convertible gets more aggressive front vents below the huge grill. If you take a closer look at these vents they aren’t like the ones on any other vehicle from Merc. The vents are AMG S63 Convertible specific.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 Convertible 3 Quarter View

On the rear, the taillights hold 33 crisp and thin OLEDs which are just gorgeous. As mentioned earlier the OLEDs are another part of the vehicle which is an S-Class AMG exclusive. Mercedes has blacked out all the chrome on the car except for a thin chrome bezel that runs between the glass and the doors which runs all the way to the back. The quad exhausts look fabulous with the air vents above them to improve the aerodynamics.

From the side, you can actually see how long the S63 really is. There are carbon fiber side skirts on the bottom. The wheels sport the 20” AMG 5 spoke alloy that comes as standard. With the top down the Merc looks exquisite.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 Convertible Safety

7.5/10

Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG convertible has not been crash-tested yet so the NHTSA Ratings are not available. But we know Mercedes provides the best in class safety for the driver and the occupants. The S63 is the elite offering from them and they have given a list of safety features in the car.

S63 chassis is a mix of aluminum and ultrahigh-strength steel. The chassis also has materials like extruded and cast aluminum and metal-polymer hybrids which enhance strength. There is an innovative thermally assisted forming and bond laser-bonding of the doors with the aluminum chassis. The chassis merged with the doors give it high side-impact strength in the absence of a solid roof and full B-Pillars.

What are the on-board Safety Features?

The S63 AMG is loaded with features to ensure the safety of the driver and the passengers. It’s even more necessary on a convertible which is structurally not as rigid as a sedan.

  • Mercedes-Benz Emergency Call
  • Attention Assist
  • Intelligent Light System headlamps & Adaptive Highbeam Assist
  • LED Daytime Running Lamps
  • Crosswind, Blind Spot & Lane Keeping Assist
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Pre-safe & Pre-safe Sound
  • Active Parking Assist
  • Surround View System
  • Pop-up roll bars
  • 10 airbags
  • Front seat-belt presenters
  • Adaptive braking technology & Brake Assist
  • Anti Lock Braking System (ABS) & Electronic Stability Program (ESP)
  • Hybrid aluminum and high-strength steel body structure
  • Advanced Tire Pressure Monitoring System

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 Convertible Competition

Mercedes AMG S 63 Cabriolet VS BMW M850i Convertible

It is an age-old question, which is better Mercedes or BMW? Well, quite honestly we don’t have an answer either. The AMG is quicker off the line, makes more power has a much more luxurious interior. The BMW M850i Convertible is super fun to drive, handles just a bit better and delivers more fuel efficiency. So the answer is probably which brand you prefer or what you’re looking for in the car.

2020 BMW M850i Convertible

Mercedes AMG S 63 Cabriolet VS Jaguar F-Type SVR Convertible

The F-Type might be the best performance offering by Jaguar, but the Mercedes S63 AMG has it beat on all aspects. Not that it matters but the Mercedes actually costs less than the Jaguar and delivers much more power and luxury compared to the Jag. The Jag has sub-par technology and other luxury features whereas Merc excels in all these categories.

2020 Jaguar F-Type SVR Convertible

Mercedes AMG S 63 Cabriolet VS Audi R8 Spyder

The Audi R8 is the most affordable supercar and there are people who are deeply in love with this car for all that it offers. But when compared to the Mercedes it lacks all the luxury and comfort that is on the S63. The R8 has a bigger engine, makes more power and is an exceptional performer on the tracks. Mercedes proves that it can potentially beat the R8 on the track. S63 AMG is an absolute stunner from the inside and out.

2020 Audi R8 Spyder

Mercedes AMG S 63 Cabriolet VS Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Convertible

The Porsche does not match up to the Mercedes period. It has a smaller engine, the seating and comfort can be much better than what they are. The Mercedes could probably drive circles around the 911 on the track. The Mercedes is a better option and Porsche needs to pick up its game.

2020 Porsche 911 Carrera

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 Convertible Final Verdict

8.9/10

The Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG convertible is a true S-Class performer. The grunt from the engine, drivability, and the design are probably the best in the segment. The BMW M850i Convertible is a worthy competitor and has its own perks. But in all reality, the S63 AMG is the personification of luxury and would make a good addition in your garage.
