The Mercedes-Benz AMG S63 five-seater sedan is a performance-oriented version of the S-Class that sees no big change for the 2016 model year. Starting at $143,250 the AMG S63 packs in a 577-horsepower, 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 engine which is good enough to smoke almost any car of equal stature on the dragstrip. Being based on the S-Class the AMG S63's interior is all about luxury and style with quilted leather upholstery, top-notch material used all-around, two big 12.3-inch screens with Mercedes' COMMAND infotainment system to keep you happy while inside the car. That said, the 2016 Mercedes-Benz AMG S63 sedan is now facing stiff competition from equally worthy rivals like Maserati Quattroporte GTS and Audi S8.

2016 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 Engine and Performance

9.5/10

The Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 is powered by a 5.5liter Biturbo V8 motor, handbuilt and tuned by AMG. The motor is capable of delivering a maximum of 577 horsepower and 677lb-ft of sheer torque. The power on tap is more than you could ask for especially for a full-size luxury sedan as the S 63 and you’ll be doing some serious triple-digit speeds without even knowing. When heard from the outside, the motor has a hearty exhaust note along with a deep V8 grunt but all these fade away and become shallow once you step inside the cabin and shut the doors. The 7-speed automatic unit is almost lightning-quick and sometimes you’ll tend to forget that you’re driving a full-fledged luxury sedan. The 0-60mph sprint takes a mere 4.7 seconds to complete, a blisteringly quick time for a full-size luxury sedan.

The Maserati Quattroporte has a fantastic performance along with some seriously pleasant exhaust notes from that carefully crafted V8 but it generates lower power and torque figures than the S 63. The Audi S8 is the humble kid around the block with the least power and torque figures along with the lowest price tag as well.

2016 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 Fuel Economy

With the crazy power and performance stats from that AMG powertrain, it is quite obvious that the mileage ratings would take a steep blow. The city mileage of the sedan is rated at a mere 15mpg while the highway mileage is rated at 23mpg. The combined mileage is rated at 18mpg.

The Maserati Quattroporte might have a lower power count than the S 63 but it has even lower mileage ratings than the latter that might disappoint some. The Audi S8 also offers almost similar mileage figures to the other two rivals which is highly disappointing considering its power and performance figures.

2016 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 Interior

9.9/10

The cabin of the S Class sedans has always been special regardless of the model year or the variant. The current model year’s cabin looks and feels more opulent and comfortable, making it lock its horns with a Bentley rather than the flagships from Audi or BMW. The interior is almost fully covered in premium leather and soft-touch materials along with tastefully placed wooden and metallic trims. The dashboard looks quite attractive with the new COMAND interface and the center console looks a bit busy with an array of buttons to control all the electronics and the tech features inside the cabin. The front seats offer superior comfort levels with aggressive bolstering for the S 63 while the rear seats remain as comfortable as they are in the standard S Class sedans. The trunk space is quite large at 16.3 cu-ft.

The Maserati Quattroporte also has a comfortable and opulent cabin but lacks the finesse and exclusiveness you’d find in an S Class. The Audi S8 ist quite behind in terms of luxury and comfort features and has an opulent cabin as well.

Infotainment

The S 63 comes with Mercedes’ COMAND interface with two 12.3-inch displays adorning the dashboard. The features include Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, a navigation system, traffic information, voice controls, WiFi hotspot, Mercedes mbrace telematics, a 13-speaker Burmester surround-sound audio system with a six-CD/DVD changer, two USB audio inputs, an iPod/media player interface, HD radio, satellite radio, TuneIn Internet radio, and 10GB of digital music storage.

2016 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 Exterior

9.9/10

Since the S Class has a lot of expectations to be fulfilled and maintain a standard that it has set in its yesteryears, the overall design looks both luxurious and classic at the same time along with sporting a more athletic look as compared to the laid-back and lazy appeal it used to have previously. The S 63 comes with AMG specific body kit making it more sportier and aerodynamically efficient to aid the massive boost in power and deliver an optimum performance level. The full LED exterior lighting looks striking and the 5-spoke AMG wheels give the sedan a complete look.

The Maserati Quattroporte has a more aggressive and sharp styling than the S 63 with smaller doors and a lower roofline. The Audi S8 gets a classy yet appealing design language and looks more aggressive than the S 63 but the latter has more to offer under its hood.

2016 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 Safety

9.0/10

Since the S 63 is super pricey it doesn’t get any safety score form the NHTSA or the IIHS but has a myriad of safety features to keep you safe under most situations. The standard features include traction and stability control along with crosswind mitigation, anti lock brakes, front and rear side airbags, front pelvic airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, and a driver knee airbag. Some electronic safety aids include a rearview camera, a driver inattention warning system, and a collision prevention system.

Safety features:

  • Brake Assist
  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Daytime Running Lights
  • Child Safety Locks
  • Integrated Turn Signal Mirrors
  • Night Vision (Optional)
  • Traction Control
  • Blind Spot Monitor (Optional)
  • Lane Departure Warning (Optional)
  • Lane Keeping Assist (Optional)

2016 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 Competition

Mercedes AMG S63 vs Audi S8

The Audi S8 has some catching up to do before it can reach the benchmarks set by the Mercedes S Class. At $114,900, the Audi costs significantly lesser than the S63 sedan. But this is the segment where the price is one of the lesser issues. The Audi uses a smaller engine and as a result, makes lesser power than the Merc. Dimensionally, the S8 sedan is smaller and doesn't stand up to the road presence of the Mercedes AMG S63 sedan.

Mercedes AMG S63 vs Porsche Panamera Turbo

The 2016 Porsche Panamera Turbo takes the competition a notch higher. At $141,300, it enjoys aggressive pricing. It is powered by a 4.8-liter V8 engine that cranks out 570 horsepower. The competition is toe to toe here. But the Porsche enjoys a better power to weight ratio that gives it an advantage.

Mercedes AMG S63 vs Maserati Quattroporte GTS

Now we are talking, the Maserati is known for its old school craftsmanship. The Quattroporte is chic, sexy and bathed in leather. We are talking about some serious quality of fit and finish, here. At 207-inches the Maserati Quattroporte has some street cred. It will turn some heads as you fill the tank up. But the Mercedes comes off as a better contended that offers a good balance of fun and play.

2016 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 Final Verdict

The Mercedes-Benz S 63 is for those who are keen on having a performance beast in the guise of a luxury sedan. The S 63 has been designed carefully not to skimp on any of the comfort features of the standard S Class and offer a memorable driving experience every time you hit the road with it.
