However, what rests at the summit of this lineup is the AMG GT R, the apex predator, the goddess of engine-sutra, the GT R has enough caliber to dust the toughest of the competitors. Yes, it is hot, but the year 2020 brings us an even sexier iteration of this car - the Mercedes Benz AMG GT R Roadster. It was the year 2019 when this enchantress stripped its top for us in Geneva, and what came out from behind the curtains was a car that held the characteristics of a track “Hellfire” and the charm of a seductive luxurious convertible car.

The Mercedes Benz AMG GT Roadster is going to be a limited-run model, as the company plans out to roll out just 750 units of this virtuoso. The Mercedes Benz AMG GT R Roadster underpins the same specs as its coupe sibling, with a V8 powerhouse, making 577 ponies and 516 lb.-ft. Of torque. The prices for the GT R Roadster starts from $189,750, which lands it in a pit with some hardcore-machines such as the Audi R8 Spyder, the Mclaren 600 LT Spider, and the BMW M8 Competition Convertible. So will this German-born be able to emerge from this coliseum which the other German cars simply seem to dominate? Scroll down to find out...

What takes care of transmission tasks for the Mercedes Benz AMG GT R Roadster is an AMG-spec 7-speed dual-clutch transmission with a rear-mounted transaxle. This arrangement results in effortless shifting of gears, routing power to the rear wheels with the utmost ease. Moreover, the engineers at Affalterbach have exclusively used a carbon fiber prop shaft and aluminum torque tube to connect the gearbox to the engine, cause weight deductions, bro!

How fast is the Mercedes Benz AMG GT R Roadster?

The growling 4 L bi-turbo V8 inside the Mercedes Benz AMG GT R Roadster, when paired with the AMG-spec 7 speed transmission, and fluid aerodynamics, can make this rocket propel from 0-60 in just 3.5 seconds.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT R Roadster 0-60 MPH In just 3.5 sec

The Mercedes Benz AMG GT Roadster’s gear ratio is just another highlight of the star-studded show this car exhibits on the road. The transmission system has a special longer first gear ratio and a shorter seventh, which results in better acceleration. The AMG GT R Roadster can cover the quarter of a mile distance in just 11.4 seconds at a speed of 127.6 mph.

The Mercedes Benz AMG GT R Roadster packs a lot of brawn, but it definitely is not the most sturdy one in the lot. The BMW M8 Competition and the Mclaren 600 LT Spider come out as the fastest cars of the segment with a 0-60 figure of 3.1 seconds. A big credit in the case of BMW goes to the highest number of ponies and spinning force the ride packs, and in the case of Mclaren, the low weight does the job. The Audi R8, which is the only V10 of the segment performs fairly good as well.

What about the braking performance of the Mercedes Benz AMG GT R Roadster?

When throttling such a mighty beast, you need to be sure that the ride is well-equipped for the time you need to slow down on speeding or even come to a standstill, and the Mercedes Benz AMG GT R Roadster inspires ample confidence with its braking setup.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT R Roadster Front Brake is 15.4 in.

The Mercedes Benz AMG GT R Roadster deploys a 15.4-inch brake rotor at its front wheels and 14.2-inch rotors towards the rear. All the rotors are entirely carbon-ceramic-borne and com fitted with six-piston fixed calipers.

The AMG high-composite braking setup of the GT R Roadster does a laudable job and brings the ride from 60 mph to a standstill in a distance of just 96 feet. The only car that performs better than the AMG GT R Roadster in the Mclaren 600 LT. The Audi R8 makes a close chase with a stopping distance of 97 feet. However, the BMW M8 Competition Convertible lags behind in the 60-0 fixture with a stopping distance of 108 feet, but since the Bimmer is much heavier than all the other rides, no negative marking here.

What about its driving dynamics?

Just as you’d expect from an AMG of this range, the GT R Roadster accounts for an extremely agile, and enthralling driving performance, and there are a number of factors working towards achieving this feat.

The engineers at Affalterbach have stuffed this ride with tech and electronics and that too up to the brim. For instance, the AMG GT R equips dry-sump lubrication instead of an orthodox oil-pan which improves lubrication in conditions of hard cornering and other gray situations.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT R Roadste Rear view

Other than this there are also some AMG-spec features such as the AMG Ride Control sports suspension, speed-sensing dynamic power steering, and active rear-wheel steering, which increase the quality of the ride, the car’s agility, and tire contact while reducing body roll, and pitch and dive.

The Mercedes Benz AMG GT C can be driven in 4 modes passing by the names: Comfort, Sport, Sport+, and Race. All of these modes offer a completely different experience behind the wheel and are an absolute blazer. The Comfort mode keeps things light with a calmer exhaust note and gentler suspension. Employ the Sport and the Sport+ modes and you will get aware of the true potency of the AMG GT R Roadster. Both the Sport and the Sport+ modes convey a sharp throttle reaction alongside a tempting exhaust note.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT R Fuel Economy

4.0/10

The bi-turbo V8 engine of the Mercedes Benz AMG GT R Roadster provides enough grunt and thump to fill you up with adrenaline and inject you with the enthusiasm of driving a sports car. However, in this process of generating a brawny power, the Mercedes Benz AMG GT R falls a bit short on delivering a great fuel-efficiency.

The Mercedes Benz AMG GT R Roadster can cover 15 city miles or 20 highway miles for each gallon of gasoline you feed it. Summing these numbers up, we get a combined mpg figure of 17. Though not absolutely great, yet these numbers feel respectable for a ride that houses a V8 engine and produces more than 570 ponies.

The Mclaren 600 LT Spider churn out the best in class combined mpg figure of 18, followed by the Mercedes Benz AMG GT R Roadster and the BMW M8 Competition Convertible with both the German-made giving out a combined mpg of 17, and finally comes the Audi R8 which lags by just a mile, going 16 combined miles per gallon. Though the Mclaren has the best in class fuel-efficiency, yet the ride has the least range, owing to the small fuel tank.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT R Interior

5.7/10

Mercedes offerings have always been a statement maker, and the GT R Roadster is no different. Carrying a big legacy of the SLS on its shoulders, the GT R has exoticism written all over its cabin.

Open those wide doors of the GT R Roadster and you’ll be greeted by a contrasting interior. Yes, you read it right, contrasting. The Mercedes Benz AMG GT R Roadster’s interior has been designed in such a way that it pulls off the practicality stuff without compromising on the style quotient. The dashboard is designed in black and the seats are made in Nappa leather with a number of color options that you can choose.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT R Roadste Front Seats

The interior layout of the AMG GT R Roadster speaks for this beasts’ personality as well. The layout of the interior is pretty sensible and chic wit satin and gloss carbon fiber inserts, piano black, and aluminum trim. The center console of the ride is designed in a special V8 design. In the focal of the center console is a touchpad controller, which is surrounded by 8 physical shortcut buttons, 4 on each side, which portray the design of a V8 engine.

The seats of the AMG GT R Roadster are not just any regular seats, but instead a product of AMG, yes, they are the heated and ventilated AMG Performance sports seats, done in exclusive Nappa leather. However, you can swap these performance seats with bucket seats as well. Other than that, there is the AIRSCARF vent in all the seats. This vent rests in the neck vertex of the seat and is basically a neck-level heating system. This AIRSCARF has individual 3-stage temperature controls, delivering comfort to your nape.

Does it come loaded with tech inside?

The Mercedes Benz AMG GT R Roadster equips the state-of-the-art MBUX infotainment system, which beams all the information on a 10.3-inch focal screen. This screen, however, is not touch-operated and the primary way to interact with this panel is via a large knob on the console, or via a touchpad controller, which makes it a bit clumsier to operate at times. Some other features of the Mercedes Benz AMG GT R Pro’s infotainment arrangement are:

  • Real-time weather display
  • Speed sensitive volume
  • Wireless phone connectivity
  • Concealed antenna
  • Audio theft deterrent
  • Mercedes me connect internet access
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto
  • Automatic equalizer
  • Burmester surround sound system
  • Weather band radio
  • Voice control

Creature comforts on offer in the Mercedes Benz AMG GT R Roadster

The MERCenaries have gone on the depth of details in order to manufacture a car that ensures that its occupants are always at ease, and do not find have to witness even the slightest of discomfort or pang. Some of the prominent convenience features of the Mercedes Benz AMG GT R Roadster are:

  • Keyfob trunk/hatch/door release
  • Remote keyless entry

  • Memory seats
  • Navigation system with voice activation
  • Cruise control with DISTRONIC PLUS distance pacing
  • Retained accessory power

What about utility?

If there is an aspect that cars of this breed take a beating at, it is the cargo capacity they place on offer. Sports cars of this league are meant to satisfy your engine lust as their mighty engines growl when blasting down speedways, but carrying your luggage is just not their forte.

Going by this notion, the Mercedes AMG GT R Roadster offers 5.8 cubic feet of storing space under its trunk lid, which is a decent figure for a sports car of this spec.

The Mercedes Benz AMG GT R Roadster’s cargo capacity of 5.8 cubic feet looks like a respectable figure when seen via the segment standards. The Audi R8 offers the least cargo-carrying space with just 4 cubic feet under its belt. The Mclaren 600 LT spider rakes in the third spot with 5.3 cubic feet of space. The Mercedes Benz AMG GT R Roadster ranks seconds, whereas the BMW M8 Competition Coupe leads the segment by a huge margin with more than 14 and a half cubic feet of space. However, that is mainly because of the car’s dimensions, as it is the biggest car of the segment, with a passenger capacity of 4.

The Mercedes Benz AMG GT R Roadster is an absolute stunner when it comes to the ride’s visual appeal. The 2020 Mercedes Benz AMG GT R Roadster is a convertible, that houses a front-mid mounted engine, and comes fitted with a fixed-wing on back. This, my friend, is a combination deadly enough to make jaws drop and mouth fill with lauds. The only car that has used this combination before was also a limited-edition marvel from Mercedes- the legendary CLK DTM.

2020 Mercedes Benz AMG GT R Roadster Three Quarter View

It was the year 2019 when the first topless AMG GT R was witnessed by the world, as a model that will be going out in the year 2020. The silhouette of the Mercedes Benz AMG GT R is of a typical sports car, that can create havoc on tracks, but the Roadster iteration is much more than just a lethal track-weapon. The sky is the limit for this car (quite literally) as the top-down factor adds an aura of romance to this otherwise hardcore performer. Procure a Mercedes Benz AMG GT R Roadster and soak in all the drama of owning an AMG Rocket, and that too with the serenity of the surroundings as you blast down the Pacific Coast Highway or the Route 1 Alaska, (totally upon your preference, whether you enjoy the breezy sea winds or the cold mountain atmosphere).

The power convertible-roof lining of the Mercedes Benz AMG GT R Roadster can fold down in less than 10 seconds, and unfolds an entirely another dimension of this ride. The Mercedes Benz AMG GT R Roadster rolls upon the 20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, fitted with yellow brake calipers. There are many other praiseworthy elements of the GT R Roadster such as the curved lines, defined creases, plunging nose, and air vents.

What are those eye-catching features?

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT R Safety

The V8 fitted inside the Mercedes Benz AMG GT R Roadster tempts you to pin the throttle pedal as the growl is nothing less than heaven-nectar dripping right into your ears. However, to ensure that the potency of this lethal weapon does not prove out to be disastrous for the occupants, the ride hosts a wide array of safety and driver-assistance features. Some of the most noteworthy Mercedes Benz AMG GT R Roadster’s safety features are:

  • Integrated roll-over protection
  • Front and rear ventilated disc brakes
  • Fixed front head restraints
  • Remote activated perimeter/approach lights
  • Side-impact bars
  • Electronic stability
  • PRE-SAFE forward-collision warning

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT R Competition

Mercedes Benz AMG GT R Roadster vs. Audi R8 Spyder

Priced at $182,100, te Audi R8 is the closest competitor to the Mercedes Benz AMG GT R Roadster in terms of pricing. The R8 is the only ride of the segment that houses a V10 engine, generating 562 hp along with 406 lb.-ft. Of torque. These figures can make this “Ringed Beast” shoot from 0-60 in just 3.3 seconds, which makes it a bit faster than the Merc offering. However, the R8 Spyder cannot evoke the level of drama that an AMG GT R Roadster, as the body-design of the R8 feels kind of obsolete, as it has been in the market for a very long time now.

2020 Audi R8 Spyder

Mercedes Benz AMG GT R Roadster vs. McLaren 600 LT Spider

The Mclaren 600 LT is the most expensive offering of this segment, with a price tag ranging over $2,50,000. The 600 LT houses a 3.8L V8 engine, which belts out 592 hp and 457 lb.-ft. Of torque. The Mclaren 600 LT is the most no-nonsense track weapon in this lot, with a 0-60 time of 3.1 seconds. The Mclaren 600 LT also offers the best in class fuel efficiency, however, what the Mclaren lacks is opulence. Yes, the 600 LT is definitely an attention-grabber, but its interior is more performance-oriented rather than comfort or luxury.

2020 McLaren 600 LT Spider

Mercedes Benz AMG GT R Roadster vs. BMW M8 Competiton Convertible

The BMW is the most humble-priced ride of the segment, with prices starting from $155,500. The Bimmer houses a 4.4L V8 engine, fabricating 617 hp and 553 lb.-ft. Of torque, which makes it the brawniest car of the lot. The BMW is as fast as the Mclaren, with a 0-60 figure of 3.1 seconds, at that too at half the price. One more advantage that the BMW offers is practicality. The Bimmer is the only car in this comparison that offers a passenger capacity of 4, and that too with a cargo capacity of 14.8 cubic feet.

2020 BMW M8 Competiton Convertible

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT R Final Verdict

The Mercedes Benz AMG GT R Roadster is an ideal sports car that can devastate those tracks, as well as offer a serene ride when that top goes down. The AMG GT R Roadster though is a bit pricey, but it offers a lucrative performance, along with opulent interiors, and smashing exteriors, that make it worth the price.
