The Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Roadster has always been an effortless blend of luxury and performance as is proven by its flawless design. However, the engineers at Mercedes begged to differ. So in order to keep the AMG GT lineup fresh for the year 2020, they gave it a mild exterior and interior refresh. Also debuting on this year’s AMG GT Roadster are a 12.25-inch instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment unit. What has been preserved though is the source that powers this beast. The 2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Roadster derives power from the same hand-made 4.0-liter bi-turbo V8 that makes 469 hp and 465 lb.-ft. torque being sent to the rear wheels of this convertible via a seven-speed automatic dual-clutch transmission.

The minor upgrades have made the 2020 AMG GT Roadster about $3,000 dearer than the outgoing model. For a price of $127,900, the 2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Roadster goes up against other convertibles like the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 and the Porsche 911 Carrera S. But what makes the AMG GT Roadster stand out amongst the rest is its everyday drivability despite being a more track-focused machine.

How fast is the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT?

The various reinforcements from AMG add a heavy dose of aluminum to the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Roadster’s chassis. Besides making the chassis stiffer, the aluminum also helps with weight reduction. So this GT Roadster is relatively lighter. The 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 sends power only to the rear wheels of this Roadster.

Consequently, the lightweight Roadster takes off like a rocket with the slightest push of the throttle. Doing so shifts the weight of the AMG GT Roadster to the back, and the 7-speed DCT is always in the right gear to ensure more than sufficient power throughout. So even this most basic AMG GT Roadster is plenty fast.

The Chevrolet Corvette gets the biggest most powerful engine in this face-off. However, it’s the Porsche that impresses the most with its 3.0-liter horizontal six-cylinder.

What about the braking performance of the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT?

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Roadster isn’t just fast to accelerate. It is also just as quick to come to a halt. All four wheels of the AMG GT Roadster come equipped with adaptive anti-lock disc brakes. The firm pedal provides the right kind of stress-free feedback in situations that ask for it.

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Roadster isn’t just fast to accelerate

With even the slightest push of the pedal, the brakes bite confidently to offer ample power in order to shed speed. However, in acute stopping situations, the weight of this Merc shifts to the front and causes some discomfort for the driver. But much of the nose-dive is contained by the AMG GT Roadsters’s swooping design.

Also, the limited-slip rear differential ensures this Roadster doesn’t steer sideways while going down hard on the brakes, and even after repeated harsh braking, brake-fade is very well kept at bay.

The Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Roadster is the lightest amongst its competitors. Hence, it manages to stop pretty quickly. However, it’s the Z06 that is the quickest to come to a halt.

What about its driving dynamics?

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Roadster is an all-round car. While it can very well tear up the racetrack, it can also do everyday runs to the market just as easily. Helping this Roadster be as versatile are the various driving modes; Comfort, Slippery and Sport/Sport+.

In Comfort mode, the otherwise ready to race AMG GT Roadster, fells noticeably sedate. The steering wheel and pedals all feel light and easy, perfect for those drives around the city. Even the exhaust is quieter. As for the transmission, it plays its part by always finding the right gear to be in. The adaptive system read road conditions that lie ahead and automatically adjusts the level of dampening to soften blows from underneath. Eventually, this Merc lets you take its top off so you can dial down and bask in the ambiance. However, with heaps of power always on standby, the AMG GT Roadster makes up for great overtaking prowess on the highway.

2020 Mercedes Benz AMG GT Wheel

Speaking of power, which is never less on this Mercedes-Benz, the 2020 AMG GT Roadster really comes alive in the Sport/Sport+ mode. This is when the already quick AMG GT Roadster feels as if it were injected by not one but two adrenaline shots. The several reinforcements from AMG make this Merc an extremely competitive machine. These include aluminum front strut domes, three mid-body braces, a rear crossmember also made of aluminum, and a rear steel V-brace. All these factors result in a much stiffer chassis, while the aluminum keeps the weight of this convertible in check. These factors make the 2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Roadster respond a lot better to the driver's inputs, and help it change sides like voters on election day.

In slippery mode, the limited-slip rear differential comes into play. It ensures that you don’t go overboard with this Roadster when things get wet. Power delivery feels linear and the steering feels a little lighter off the center. Overall, no matter what it is that you want to do with this Mercedes, the AMG GT Roadster is more than prepared for it.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Convertible Fuel Economy

5.0/10

The bi-turbo V8 of the 2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT is all about power and performance, and perform is what the AMG GT Roadster does. So it is fair not to expect this Merc to be fuel-efficient. But this is where the AMG GT Roadster surprises the most.

While the rear wheel drive unit helps the AMG GT Roadster to take off in a jiffy, it also helps it save fuel for better efficiency. As power is sent only to the rear wheels, the high power engine of this convertible from Mercedes is not a total gas-guzzler afterall.

7.5/10

Some cars out there have two seats too many, but not the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Roadster. In fact, just to satisfy as a road car, this Merc gets an additional seat next to the driver. Speaking of seats, they are nice and wide, and very accomodating.

What’s not so accommodating though is the AMG GT Roadster extended hood and sloping roof. The longer than usual nose of the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Roadster makes it really difficult to steer in city traffic as you constantly find yourself struggling to look out of those traffic junctions.

Adding on to the discomfort is the low roof of this Roadster. Everytime you want to get in out of the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Roadster, you’ve got to watch your head, which can be a task. Other than that, the cabin of this sportscar oozes elegance. The MB-Tex upholstery, polished aluminum and capacitive buttons further enhance this Roadster’s luxury.

While most other convertibles get only two seats, it’s the Porsche 911 Carrera S Convertible that increases practicality with its second row seats despite having the shortest wheelbase.

Does it come loaded with tech inside?

Debuting on the inside of the 2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Roadster is a 12.25-inch instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch Comand infotainment display. The infotainment is operated by a large touchpad placed on the center console, while the instrument cluster changes with different modes. The various features aboard the infotainment system are:

  • Android Auto
  • Apple CarPlay
  •  Bluetooth audio streaming
  • SiriusXM radio
  • Live traffic information
  • 3 years of Mercedes me connect services
  • Burmester surround sound system
  • Enhanced voice control
  • Hands-free Bluetooth interface

Creature comforts on offer in the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT

In order to make sure that the 2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Roadster makes the occupants feel at home at all times, Mercedes has laced this convertible with the following comfort features:

  • Steering-wheel touch control buttons
  • Heated front/back seats
  • Ventilated front seats
  • Dual-zone climate control
  • Keyless-go with hands-free access
  • AMG silver chrome interior trim
  • AMG illuminated door sills
  • Exclusive Nappa leather upholstery

What about utility?

It’s really not fair to expect a car that can seat up to two people to offer a lot of boot space. It’s all the more unfair to expect a performance car to offer the same. And the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Roadster is both these cars. But this convertible also aspires to be a road car.

In order to satisfy as a practical car, the AMG GT Roadster does get a trunk afterall, which may not be large, but is definitely big by sportscar standards. Perhaps if the engineers at Mercedes could shorten the never ending nose of this Merc, they would be able to free up more space in the back.

8.2/10

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Roadster might face tough competition from other convertibles in terms of performance, practicality and interior comfort. However, there aren’t many convertibles that look half as good as this Roadster from Mercedes. And for the year 2020, Mercedes gave the AMG GT Roadster some minor exterior refresh to make things even better.

The redesigned elements visually link the AMG GT to the GT 4-Door. Most noticeably, the LED headlights have been restyled, and so are the taillights which are now tinted. Even the rear bumper is brand new. Also new on the 2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT roadster are side skirts, quad exhausts and wheel design. Other than that, the overall appearance of the 2020 AMG GT roadster remains more or less the same.

The overall appearance of the 2020 AMG GT roadster remains more or less the same

At the front, this AMG GT Roadster features a convex grille with large air intakes down low. Power domes, as the manufacturer calls it, rise from the hood and accentuate the flared fenders at the sides. From the sides we notice the profile of this convertible as it rises to its windshield, then suddenly kinks down to where the rear spoiler is. The back end of this Roadster is complete with a new diffuser, tinted taillights and quad exhausts.

  • Aluminum space frame

Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Roadster vs. Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Convertible

It might not be totally fair to put these cars side by side for a comparison. Nonetheless, both these soft-tops are hardcore performance machines that can also double up as a daily drive. Speaking of which, the Corvette Z06 satisfies more. It’s got a much bigger engine that makes a lot more power than the one on the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Roadster. The Corvette Z06 Convertible also has a significantly larger boot. The fact that the Chevy is over $30,000 less expensive than the Merc, makes the former a much better package.

Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Roadster vs. Porsche 911 Carrera S Convertible

The Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Roadster and Porsche 911 Carrera S Convertible couldn’t be more alike. For starters, both are manufactured by esteemed German brands. When you look at things aside from what is put down on paper, the real picture appears. The Porsche though a lot behind on engine capacity, isn’t too far behind on power when compared to the AMG GT Roadster. Neither is it very less expensive. However, the Porsche manages to outperform the Merc in every considerable aspect. Also, the 911 Carrera S Convertible gets two extra seats than the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Roadster. As far as reality is concerned, it’s the Porsche that takes the lead.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Convertible Final Verdict

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Roadster is a dedicated track machine, but it doesn’t shy away from throwing in the towel and kicking back. The soft-top of this Merc is more like icing on the cake. For $127,900 the 2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Roadster offers decent value for money. But it’s not the only car in the market to do so.
