Mercedes-Benz (mostly AMG) has decided to slap in a V8 with 469 hp to a jacked-up SUV with a sloping roofline. The performance figures as you’d expect are mind-boggling. With such high numbers backing it you might expect the Merc to offer an uncompromising ride, much to our surprise it’s easy to live with. To keep it concise, this is a highly sought after machine.

Locking its horns with the BMW X4, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio, and the Porsche Macan turbo, the Merc has a lot riding on its shoulders. With prices starting from $63,000 for the GLC 43  and $76,500 for the GLC 63, the competition is a belter. Let’s see if the Merc has what it takes to trump its competitors.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 63 Coupe Features

9.0/10

The Mercedes-Benz GLC coupe comes in 3 formats, AMG GLC 43, AMG GLC 63, and the AMG GLC 63 S respectively. As standard, you get all the goodies you’d expect from a Mercedes like Driver and front passenger heated seats, lumbar support, remote keyless entry, and voice-activated navigation, to name a few. Being a Mercedes you are offered 3 packages namely, exterior lighting package (includes Intelligent light system with adaptive headlights), Parking assistance package (Includes 360-degree camera system with parking assist features), and Driver assistance package (Includes active steering assist, active blind-spot assist, and other driving aids). The costs for each package are $800, $1290, and $1700 respectively.

The trims are available with various engine tunes, with the GLC 43 having a 3.0L turbocharged inline 6 making 385 hp. The bigger GLC 63 gets a 4.0L turbocharged V8 making 469 hp and the S version gets the same engine in a different state of tune, producing a whopping 503 hp.

Which trim should you go for?

This car is all about making a statement so why cheap out on buying the plebian ones when you can go all out and get the GLC 63 S. Makes more than 500 hp, looks the part and performs as brilliantly as it sounds. Hovering around the 100 grand mark, it ain’t cheap. For the baller that you intend to become it ain’t much.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 63 Coupe Engine and Performance

9.9/10

The engine that powers this machine is the ever-popular AMG 4.0L twin-turbo V8, power rating comes in at 469 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. More than adequate for a gentle cruise along Rodeo drive.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 63 Coupe SUV Engine

The torque is available right from 1750 rpm which translates to racing between lights and the eventual humiliation of a random corvette owner. The powerhouse is mated to a 9-speed AMG speedshift multi-clutch transmission (MCT) providing seamless shifts wherever you are in the rev band.

The stats evidently shows how underpowered the rest of the competition is when compared to the Alfa. However, the Alfa lacks behind the Merc while marginally topping the BMW. Clearly, if you want some serious pulling power it’s definitely the Merc with its class-leading torque figures. The GLC 63 is the only one in this comparison to offer a V8. To be honest the Merc sounds best amongst these performance SUV coupes. Porsche seems a bit left out with its less competitive figures.

Hows’s the acceleration?

Off the line, the Merc manages to hit 60 in 3.8 seconds officially. However, other tests showed the GLC 63 managing 3.4 seconds to 60mph. This could be due to a change in the rubber used or possibly the surface it was tested on. Nonetheless, it can go beyond the expectation of Mercedes is what we can conclude. But to make things fair, we have taken the manufacturer claimed 0-60 times.

The Alfa impresses while posting a 3.6 second 60 mph dash, the Merc being two-tenths of a second slower and the bimmer scoring in the early 4s. The Porsche lags 0.2 secs behind the BMW. All but the Porsche posts quarter-mile times in the 11s with the BMW X4 leading. While the Merc manages 11.9, the Stelvio edges forward with a tenth of a second lead. All is not lost for the Porsche as it is the most eco-friendly of the bunch.

 How’s the ride?

The Merc offers a versatile driving experience. If you wish to pootle around town, put it in comfort mode and the ride is as good as any hot hatchback. Owing to the relaxed throttle response, softer dampers and slower steering. However, the ride becomes much more uncompromising and stiff when the drive mode selector is turned to sport +. Steering inputs are much sharper and the car feels nippy and agile. By no means it’s a sports car, nor can it defy the laws of physics, but the engineers have scratched their heads well enough to give you a similar experience.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 63 Coupe SUV Three Quarter View

The chassis seems balanced and when you screw things up, a plethora of computers step in and save your bottom (it can be turned off and, you’re on your own). The aural pleasure from the quad tipped exhaust amplifies the drama on offer along with the wooshes and swooshes from the twin turbos.

 Will it stop in time?

Equipped with discs on all 4 wheels and backed by what Mercedes calls, AMG high-performance braking system, the car can shed speed pretty decently. With 15.4-inch rotors handling duties up front and 14.2-inch ones managing the rear, this high-performance crossover will definitely assure a hassle-free halt.

The X4 has the largest rotors of the lot, given that it’s the heaviest, it could be anyone’s game. Since there are no braking figures to compare, we’ll base it on assumptions. To come up with a clear winner would be difficult, as the Germans have about the same sized rotors with marginal differences and the Italian has the smallest. Factoring in weight, rotor sizes and the chassis we would bet on the Porsche with the Alfa a close second. Only after a proper test shall the dilemma be cleared.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 63 Coupe Fuel Economy

5.0/10

You can’t expect Prius levels of economy on a 469 hp V8, that said, adding couple turbos has made the V8 gulp in a lot less fuel than otherwise. It’s a good thing to note that while the engineers were busy squeezing the most out of this car, they haven’t forgotten about the polar bears dying. It isn't astounding nor horrendous.

So, unsurprisingly, being the lightest and the least powerful, the Porsche manages 20mpg combined. Kudos to the team from affalterbach for beating its bavarian rival despite sporting a V8. The Merc holds pretty well even with the Italian. The triumph continues for the Porsche as it has the largest fuel tank (by a decent margin) with the Alfa having the smallest. The Merc outwins the BMW, not by much but enough to brag.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 63 Coupe Interior

9.0/10

As any other Mercedes you would naturally associate the GLC 63 with, the interior is a magnificent place to be in. Nothing is cheaped out and everything you touch feels premium and upmarket, something that befits a Mercedes. The heavily contoured AMG steering wheel feels sporty and thick with controls mounted on them.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 63 Coupe SUV Cockpit

The drive mode selector is also positioned on the steering wheel, which is the norm these days. Moving along you’ll find the updated MBUX infotainment system which is hands down one of the best systems out there, falling second to maybe Audi’s virtual cockpit. The seats up front come with all the jazz you’d expect from a $70,000+ car. To sum it up, it’s s nice cabin. C’mon it’s a Mercedes.

Pro tip would be to not fit in 5 people as the room at the back is limited. Plus if you have 5 seated then pretty much the view out the rear would be non-existent. The Stelvio would offer a decent view out the back as the roof is not steeply raked as the others.

Interior Features

Some of the interior highlights are:

  • Burmester sound system.
  • MB-Tex/DINAMICA simulated suede/leatherette Seat trim.
  • MBUX infotainment system.
  • Dual-Zone climate control HVAC
  • Driver and passenger lumbar support

How much cargo can you fit in?

If you feel ambitious and that you wish to take your crossover for some ‘We’ time, then you’d be pleased to know that this car has a surprisingly spacious cargo area. After all, it’s an SUV well, sort of.

As you can see, the cargo area is okay-ish for a weekend blast with your family. These cars (excluding the Stelvio) are nowhere near as utilitarian as their SUV counterpart, nonetheless, it tries to offer some amount of practicality. As they say, there’s no harm in trying.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 63 Coupe Exterior

8.0/10

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Irrespective of age the Mercedes looks menacing and aggressive. It does not ooze the passion or flair of an Italian but rather favors precision and function. Typical Germans. The german ingenuity doesn’t stop there, the car has a wider track (front and rear) compared to the normal GLC SUV aiding in sharper handling and killer looks.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 63 Coupe SUV Three Quarter View

Sporting 20” AMG performance wheels, the signature Panamericana grille, and the sloping roofline supplements the curb appeal. The splitter and the diffuser along with the quad tailpipes enhance the sporty stance of the vehicle.

 Dimensional Analysis

The Merc offers perfect proportions that you’d expect for a high-performance SUV coupe. With its sharper front headlights and the girth of that Panamericana grille if feels wider. However, the Porsche is a tad wider but hides it well. The Merc is not an off-roader, it was never intended to be one in the first place. The GLC offers more space between its tires, lengthwise and across. Not necessarily a light car the GLC, but Mercedes-AMG decided to give it more power to make for the added weight.

All the cars listed have their unique identity that is synonymous with their badge. If numbers are brought in, one outweighs the other, not significant but obvious nonetheless. As diplomatic as it may sound, Nobody is a winner here. But for the sake of the review, the Alfa. Why? Its Italian said the gut.

Exterior Features

Some of the notable exterior features that distinguish the 63 from the regular GLC SUV are:

  • Sloping roofline
  • AMG body styling.
  • 20” AMG performance wheels.
  • Muscular design.
  • Panamericana grille.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 63 Coupe Safety

9.9/10

Indeed it is, with all the safety tech that you can think of (Most of them being optional) the car offers great levels of assurance. If on an unlucky day you decided to wedge the car between two trees, you may be pleased to know that you could come out unharmed. If you’re very unlucky you could end up in a ‘grave’ situation. Who are we to predict eh?, anyways here is the list of standard safety tech on offer in the 2020 AMG GLC 63 coupe:

  • Active Brake Assist
  • Mercedes-Benz Emergency Call
  • Blind Spot Assist with Exit Warning Assist
  • ATTENTION ASSIST
  • Crosswind Assist
  • Aluminum and high-strength steel body structure
  • 7 airbags
  • Adaptive braking technology
  • PRE-SAFE
  • Advanced Tire Pressure Monitoring System

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 63 Coupe Competition

8.5/10

Mercedes AMG GLC 63 coupe v/s BMW X4

The trump card for cars in this segment would be the engine and what better than the AMG 4.0L V8. Yes, it is $3000 more than the bimmer but buyers of such cars are in it for the absurdity that’s on offer. And the BMW fails in that respect. Moreover, the Merc sounds much better than the X4.

2020 BMW X4

Mercedes AMG GLC 63 coupe v/s Porsche Macan turbo

Never posing a threat to the Merc GLC, the Porsche being more expensive and underpowered was always behind the brawny AMG. Triumphing over every aspect apart from fuel economy (which no one really cares at this level) the Mercedes gets an easy win over the competition from Stuttgart.

2020 Porsche Macan Turbo

Mercedes AMG GLC 63 coupe v/s Stelvio Quadrifioglio

This was in fact a tight one to call, the only things that could differentiate these cars would be the engine and their reliability. Alfa’s are not the most reliable out there and moreover, the Stelvio sports a V6 which could be a let down for some.

2020 Stelvio Quadrifioglio

If you prefer precision engineering then the Merc seems legit given it’s $4000 cheaper. But if you prefer having a piece of Italian passion and flair there’s none other than the Stelvio Quadrifoglio.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 63 Coupe Final Verdict

8.1/10

Definitely not as utilitarian as its SUV sibling, the Coupe is all about showing up to the club and letting them hear your presence. Not everyone’s cup of tea I agree, but to those who find themselves in a position to own a $75,000 piece of awkwardness, the 2020 Mercedes AMG GLC 63 coupe is definitely a no brainer.
