Although still relatively new to the SUV Coupe scene, Mercedes-Benz has enough market acumen and experience to make some confident strides in this segment as is seen with the compact GLC range. The whole range along with the AMGs was launched back in 2016, and there’s a unique flavor to each of them. Today we talk about the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 Coupe SUV, which sits conveniently between the not-so-mild GLC 300 and the boisterous AMG GLC 63.

The GLC 43 Coupe SUV makes some significant power to boast about from its 3.0L Twin turbo V-6 engine. In an attempt to look great, it skimps on some practical aspects of what an SUV should be. This crossover also has some updated tech offering which makes it stand out a little bit in the segment, as there are quite some competitors nipping at its heels. Speaking of competitors, the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 Coupe SUV competes with the BMW X4, the Audi SQ5, and the Porsche Macan.

The Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 Coupe SUV has likely a more AMG character to it, although still it fits the elegance of a Mercedes Benz, however, the popularity derives from its 3.0L V6 engine producing 385 horses to go from 0 to 60 in just less than 4.4 sec. The Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 Coupe SUV was refreshed a year ago and those improvements landed the Mercedes AMG GLC 43 on the positive side, but there are no changes for this year, however, it will be fun to see how it stacks against the new rivals.

2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 43 Coupe Features

7.0/10

The 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 Coupe SUV is a sole trim in of itself.

The car is powered by a turbocharged V-6 and is a compelling proposition enough to be the pick of the range for those who do not have the money to go for the wild GLC63 S.

2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 43 Coupe Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

Mercedes-Benz has never had many issues proving its reliability if not for its ever-changing technology inside the cabin. The cars they built have above-average reliability, and can be placed among the top 5 manufacturers easily. But due to their practice, rather a tradition of always putting the newest technology into their vehicles when it comes to the infotainment and the driver assisted tech, Mercedes-Benz has never had much time to prove the reliability with their vehicles. Rest assured; Mercedes-Benz customers had very few complaints even after having the cars for 5-8 years.

Reliability and Ownership Costs

The GLC 43 Coupe SUV has had plenty of recalls but most of them were in the years 2017-2018. For the MY 2019, the recalls issued were even fewer, and there were no recalls for 2020.

Warranty

The warranty coverage offered with the GLC 43 Coupe SUV is comparable to the protection offered by SUVs from the rival German brands. Other brands like Acura and Lexus have longer powertrain warranties. The warranty package is described below

The true cost to own a GLC 43 Coupe SUV over the length of 5 years and 75,000 miles driven is $92,352. That makes a miles-per-dollar figure of 0.81.

2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 43 Coupe Buying Advice

A single trim is on offer here so it should be a really easy decision when you find yourself buying this trim. This trim makes the most sense out of the whole GLC line-up as it offers a curious blend of power and comfort.

Is buying a used Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 Coupe SUV a good idea?

The GLC 43 Coupe SUV underwent a few tweaks and changes for the year 2020. The car for 2021 is practically unchanged if you choose the 2020 GLC 43 Coupe SUV, you might get some great deals. Going for cars before 2020 is not advised as those cars did not come with the upgrades not to mention a planet of recalls were issued those years.

2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 43 Coupe Engine and Performance

8.1/10

Under the hood sits a 3.0-liter bi-turbo V6 engine, a rather familiar engine in the lineup but tuned to pump out more power. The engine now has a total output of 385 hp and 384 lb-ft and it sounds amazing. Interestingly, the performance figures are the same as when the engine made 23 hp less.

2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 43 Coupe SUV has 3.0L V6 gas engine

The engine has more than enough grunt and muscle for everyday use, assertive drivers would rather like to use it on a daily basis. All the other cars in the competition use V6s and some of them are quicker too.

You get some awesome performance hardware for the money with the AMG GLC 43 Coupe SUV, while the BMW X4 M40i performance stood second in comparison to all.

2021 Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 Coupe SUV Acceleration And Braking Performance

The power gets to all the wheels through a nine-speed automatic gearbox, and there are several drive modes available for the driver to select. You can choose between Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, and Individual modes and it alters the transmission shifts and throttle responses.

The brakes are upgraded, and the wheels are rather big so they might screech a bit when you brake hard but they are confidence-inspiring nevertheless.

2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 43 Coupe Fuel Economy

Even though the V6 is not super-high performance, the fuel economy isn’t the best either. However, the mpg figures are not too bad in the grand scheme of things and it is on par with other similarly powered rivals in the segment. The fuel tank is quite big enough but you still need to make fuel stops a bit frequently.

The Porsche Macan may not have blistering performance compared to the others, but its advantage lies in the fuel economy and range

2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 43 Coupe Interior

7.5/10

The interiors of the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 Coupe SUV are opulent as with any typical car from a German brand. The interiors are upholstered with Black MB-Tex synthetic leather with Dinamica microsuede inserts as a standard. Apart from this, you can opt for Premium Nappa leather upholstery as well, and that too in many colors. The rest of the cabin has high-quality finishes and you will feel that the price tag of the car is justified.

Space is where the equation doesn’t look all good; you can seat up to five people in the cabin. The headroom is scarce because of the coupe SUV body style, but the front row has generous amounts of legroom. The front seating surfaces are quite supportive as well, and they offer a lot of adjustabilities.

The second row offers generous legroom as well, but the headroom is worse than the front row due to obvious reasons. Heating is standard in the front row, and so is power-adjustable with lumbar support and driver-seat memory.

How’s the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 Coupe SUV’s infotainment system?

The MBUX infotainment system makes its way to the cabin of the GLC 43 Coupe SUV. The main infotainment screen is a wide 10.3-inch unit and it will take awhile for you to get comfortable with it. Apart from the touchscreen capability, there is a touch-sensitive pad near the center armrest. You can also use the steering-wheel controls to manipulate the screen; and voice activation is optional.

The suite is quite comprehensive and offers a lot of connected tech features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth compatibility, SiriusXM satellite radio, and HD Radio. Dual USB ports come as standard, and sound duties are taken care of by a six-speaker audio system. It is complemented by the FrontBass system which comes as standard, it basically creates resonance chambers within the front dash which then exponentially improves the audio quality. You can upgrade to a 13-speaker Burmester premium audio setup if you want the ultimate audio experience in the GLC 43 Coupe SUV.

2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 43 Coupe Exterior

8.0/10

Some updates were done to the exterior of the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 Coupe SUV in 2020 and that gets carried over to 2021 as well. The 20-inch AMG Y five-spoke wheels easily steal the show, but the refreshed LED head- and taillights look great as well. The grille with horizontal bars had been replaced by the Panamericana grille which looks quite familiar as it is the same as the AMG GT. Also, the upscale front bumper from the GLC 63 is borrowed and used here as well.

The rounded tailpipes also look quite upscale for the car but they also are responsible for the irresistible soundtrack of the engine which you will cherish every moment you rev the engine a little more. Other standard exterior features include a power liftgate, LED daytime running lights, and power tilt-and-slide sunroof; while you can go for the hands-free power liftgate as an option.

2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 43 Coupe Safety

Being a quite costly SUV, the car has not been crash-tested by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) but Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) did award it overall scores of Good, but that was for the 2019 model. Nevertheless, the car comes with a plethora of safety and driver assistance technology which are listed below

  • crosswind assist
  • trailer stability control
  • traction and stability control
  • Pre-Safe
  • rearview camera
  • blind-spot monitoring
  • driver attention assist
  • automatic emergency braking
  • rain-sensing wipers

2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 43 Coupe Competition

2021 Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 Coupe SUV Vs BMW X3 M40i

The BMW X3 also has a turbo six-cylinder engine powering the car akin to the GLC 43 Coupe SUV which makes less power but it is still surprisingly quicker than the Merc. And yes, people buying from this segment will take note of those things.

BMW X3 M40i

But both the SUVs are about adrenaline-pumping driving; while the BMW is more usable with its cargo space, the Merc has better fuel economy. the AMG sure is more luxurious, so it is up to the buyer if they value the performance of the BMW more than that.

2021 Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 Coupe SUV Vs Audi SQ5

The Audi SQ5 puts out power figures closer to the Merc than the M40i, it isn’t as quick but it certainly is very agile. The interiors might not be as luxurious as the AMG, but the build quality is impeccable in comparison. Being a typical Audi, the interiors are filled with safety and entertainment technology.

Audi SQ5 SUV

Apart from the cargo capacity, the Merc has a slight edge in most of the areas, but it again will come down to the personal preference of the buyer.

2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 43 Coupe Final Verdict

The 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 Coupe SUV is another of those coupe SUVs which actually are coupe versions of already established conventional four-door SUVs and sedans that have been bodies with sharply sloping, coupe-like rooflines. This fastback version has a different charm though, with sharp driving dynamics and a lot of power coupled with engaging handling. The interiors are well-appointed and handsome but will be less spacious compared to its squared-off brethren, especially with the second-row headroom. A wide array of driver-assist tech is offered, but then again, the infotainment itself takes some time getting used to. But if sportiness is more important than a utility for you, then the GLC 43 Coupe SUV easily is a compelling choice with its sophistication and luxury combined with impressive performance.
