The brainchild of the father of the automobile, Karl Benz, Mercedes Benz is the house of cars that does not need an introduction when it comes to luxury automobiles. Mercedes Benz’s high-performance division, AMG, was introduced in 1967. It began as an independent firm that specialized in performance improvements for Mercedes Benz vehicles until a full acquisition by Daimler AG in 2005.

Overall Rating

For 2020, the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 SUV and Coupe are going to be launched with a full overhaul. Aesthetic updates, a more powerful engine, and a refreshed infotainment system. The AMG GLC 63 and the GLC 300s received their updates early but finally, the GLC 43 has also arrived at the 2020 party.

With these updates, the GLC 43 Coupe will go against its German distant brothers, Porsche Macan and BMW X4. Out in western Europe, the GLC will also compete with the English Jaguar performance-centric F-Pace Coupe. With the 2020 GLC 43, the carmaker has certainly made waves, but is it enough to tide it over the others? Let’s see.

 Our Recommendation

From the various packages to customize the GLC 43, we would recommend picking up the GLC with the Driver Assistance Package and Parking Assistance Package which would add about $3,000 to the price tag but make it a more safer and smarter. For additional coverage by the Mercedes brand itself, you can also pick up a 2-year, 3-year or even a 4-year Premier service package for extra costs.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 43 Coupe Engine and Performance

The 2020 Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 Coupe comes powered by a 3.0L Biturbo V6 engine that can outrun over 350 ponies. The engine remains the same from the previous year and only optimizations have been done to increase the power output.

The optimization has increased the horsepower of the GLC 43 by 23 hp compared to the previous year. Coupled to a 9-speed twin-clutch transmission, Mercedes has finally aced the performance of the GLC 43 with segment-leading power and torque. The new forced induction method makes sure that even at 4208lbs, the car does not show any lag in response to the driver’s input.

How fast does it go?

The 2020 AMG GLC 43 comes with a twin-turbo setup that utilizes a forced induction method to reduce the lag in throttle response. That being said, The optimizations done by Mercedes have still not made any difference in the speed aspect of the car with it having the same 0-60 time.

The car has a claimed top speed of 130 mph and can be bumped up to 155mph if you pick up the optional 21-inch Sport Performance wheels and tires. With the performance modifications, the Mercedes AMG puts in one of the fastest times in its segment. Lagging behind by just a few milliseconds from the BMW and Porsche, the 0-60 time of the car is still a figure that can cause most cars to break a sweat. To put it into perspective, the flagship Mercedes AMG GT-R Roadster has a 0-60 time of 3.5 secs.

What about the Stopping power?

The 2020 AMG GLC 43 is fitted with 20-inch AMG Y 5-spoke alloy wheels to offset the muscular look with the elegant wheels. The car comes with ventilated disc brakes in the front and ventilated discs in the back, which makes sure that the mighty beast can come to a stop in required circumstances.

Going by the figures, the car comes to a stop in the shortest distance in its class which makes its brakes top of the line. The car comes with ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and Brake Assist as standard across all trims.

The car comes with an additional adaptive brake assist system that ensures the brakes offer optimum performance under all circumstances. Either in hill start or on wet days, the predictive brake system performs additional measures, so that the 4000-pound car does not spin out of control.

 How well does it Handle?

Mercedes is a brand that is known globally for its sheer handling and driving pleasure. Built to perform like a streamlined butterfly with the magnificence of a luxury car, these cars are one of the best-in-the-business. Being an AMG, the car gets a sport-tuned suspension system and a beefy brake upgrade to handle all the bump in power. The maneuverability and the handling of the AMG GLC 43 are leagues apart from the standard GLC 300 owing to the electronically controlled steering wheel.

Being a mid-sized luxury crossover, and riding quite high because of the SUV configuration, the car is amazingly comfortable compared to its competition. The car leans ever so slightly when going into turns but its nothing to worry about thanks to the adaptive suspension control system.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 43 Coupe SUV Three Quarter View

In the comfort driving mode, the car is very light on its wheels and responsive, granting the SUV Coupe a very lively character. Shift it into performance-oriented Sport mode and the wheel assembly becomes sturdier than usual. Take it cruising through the highway or around town on a quarter-mile run, the car will definitely make you experience an adrenaline rush.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 43 Coupe Fuel Economy

The AMG segment of Mercedes is the performance segment, so hoping for a very high fuel economy would be a bit of a stretch. The car comes with AWD configuration as standard which is also not the most fuel-friendly. That being said, the car performs quite similar to its competitors in this segment.

The BMW X4 offers the best in segment fuel economy, and the Mercedes comes in at a close second. With a usable 17.4-gallon fuel tank, the car can offer a decent 350 mile plus range in combined. Depending on your driving style, you might be able to extract a few more miles out of the car but we would not put a figure on that.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 43 Coupe Interior

Enter into the car and you will experience that the standard GLC 300 interiors have been given a makeover to make it relevant for the AMG GLC 43. The interiors have a dark tone and the leather upholstery carries a light-colored accent that adds to the sporty feel. The steering wheel is the same as on the previous models of the GLC with multimedia controls on both sides and drive mode changer on the steering wheel itself.

Three circular A/C vents and the 10.25-inch infotainment system are at the top of the center console. The center console comes with a Carbon-Fiber trim as opposed to a Grain grey trim from the GLC 300. The car is comfortable for people of all heights but can be a tad uncomfortable for tall people due to the sloping roofline.

Seating is comfortable in both rows with a very well-built lumbar support. Legroom in the front is ample and even in the rearmost position setting, the rear legroom offers enough space for convenient seating. The front seats are heated and offer adjustable lumbar support. Driver seat memory also comes as a standard feature. The car comes loaded with an overabundance of features that can satisfy any entertainment or luxury need you will ever have from it. Those features are:

  • 25-inch Touchscreen infotainment system
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Mercedes me connect Assist Services
  • Remote start via Mercedes me mobile app
  • LED ambient lighting/AMG illuminated front door sills
  • Rear seats with power folding
  • Power folding side mirrors
  • Keyless Start and Go
  • Power liftgate
  • Automatic lowering for cargo loading
  • HomeLink garage door opener
  • Brake HOLD feature

While driving, the visibility is adequate but the sloping roofline can sometimes cause a problem in view. The roof pillars and shoulders can sometimes create blind spots and so, the driver has to be wary about this in dynamic conditions. Overall, the car has a very premium feel to it and the cabin manages to stay silent at all times except a few occasions. Mercedes AMG provides additional customization for the car to make it a personal statement. The following are the add-ons:

  • AMG Performance Seat package
  • 3-zone climate control
  • Ventilated seating for the front
  • Heated rear seats
  • Heat and noise insulation front side glass
  • Various trims for the center consoles
  • AMG Dinamica Performance steering wheel

With Mercedes, rest assured that the car will be a definite head-turner and get you eyeballs from everyone around.

Infotainment System

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 43 Coupe SUV has 10.25-inch Infotainment System

When it comes to being entertained, leave it in the hands of the Germans to make sure you have the best experience while traveling. Right from the infotainment system to the supporting features, the car offers an enthralling experience. The following are the system features that it comes equipped with:

  • A 10.25-inch multimedia infotainment display
  • Voice control with Natural Language understanding
  • “Hey, Mercedes” activation
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Bluetooth Audio streaming
  • Dual USB-C audio ports
  • WiFi Hotspot
  • Mercedes standard sound system
  • HD Radio and SiriusXM subscription

The infotainment system comes with the MBUX Advanced UI system and is controlled via a touchpad controller, which is also seen in a Lexus. The MBUX system is one of the best car systems and the GLC 43 comes with the latest iteration. The controller is housed on the center console near the armrest cubby. Getting acquainted with the touchpad might take some time but is fairly easy to operate.

FrontBass system makes an appearance to magnify the musical experience. The tech uses acoustic resonance inside the front dash to amplify the bass of the audio. For people who give utmost importance to the quality of music while traveling, the brand offers an option to bump up to the 13-speaker Burmester Surround Sound system. The other upgrades that you can add to the system are:

  • 3-inch digital instrument cluster
  • MB Navigation
  • MBUX Augmented Video for Navigation
  • AMG heads up display
  • TuneIn Radio
  • Live Traffic Information
  • Inductive Wireless Charging and NFC pairing

Some features can be added free of cost while some need extra prices to be paid. Depending on the feature, be ready to shell out some extra cash for the car.

What about Cargo Space?

The cargo space of the Mercedes AMG GLC 43, is an aspect where the coupe, especially, suffers. Although the sloping roofline adds character to the car, it does compromise on the usable space. The car has space for about 12 carry bags to be stored in a normal seating position.

Cargo Capacity (ft3)

Jaguar F-Pace is the flag-bearer for the segment, in terms of cargo space with its mammoth cargo capacity which can be further increased. That being said, While the space is particularly limited, the GLC 43 Coupe comes with 40/20/40 foldable seats. These are power operated and can increase the amount of usable space to almost 3 times.

The car is not high on storage in general but there is room for bare traveling necessities. The front has a standard glove box and center armrest cubby as standard. Each seating row has its own cup holders and the door pockets are more or less just for show.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 43 Coupe Competition

Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 43 Vs BMW X4 M40i

German automaker BMW’s X4 is the classic example of SUV meets coupe. BMW and Mercedes have always been close competitors and have battled it out for supremacy with either of them taking the cake in their segment. In this segment, however, the X4 M40i inches more towards victory as the car offers more practicality and usability with more cargo space and better fuel economy, all at a lower price than the GLC. The Mercedes AMG still has a better interior, safety features, and build quality and the decision comes to personal preference ultimately.

2020 BMW X4 M40i

Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 43 Vs Porsche Macan

VW owned German automaker Porsche has Macan in this segment. Launched in 2014, the Macan received an update in 2019. The car had an updated rear and front fascia in the update. Porsche Macan S is almost a soul twin of the GLC, with everything almost similar to the Mercedes but without the svelte coupe rear end. Priced lower than the GLC, the car has lesser legroom in both the front and rear. Add-on options are pricey and can skyrocket the price very quickly. Pick it up if you want a lower-priced car of the same segment.

2020 Porsche Macan

Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 43 Vs Jaguar F-Pace

British Jaguar F-Pace is the car to compete with the AMG GLC 43. The car is the SUV variant of the F-type cars from the brand. To compete with the GLC, opt for the F-Pace S variant. The car is also pretty close to the GLC when it comes to dimensions but lacks the finesse to compete with the GLC. Increasing tire size wheel degrade ride quality and the noisy cabin might make the ride less palatable. Though it does outdo a lot of its competitors when it comes to cargo, the car is also an SUV only car. Priced similar to the GLC, this can be an option if you want British heritage and performance in mind as the prime driving factor.

2020 Jaguar F-Type

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 43 Coupe Final Verdict

When it comes to the 2020 Mercedes AMG GLC 43 Coupe, the brand has made sure that people understand why it is an industry leader. Be it safety, comfort, style or performance, the car is a worthy contender to make it all the way to the top. With a price tag slightly higher than its competitors, the car does have all the Mercedes-AMG bells and whistles. Surprisingly comfortable and practical for a luxury crossover, 2020 Mercedes AMG GLC 43 Coupe has just about enough power to be dubbed an AMG performance vehicle. Overall, a great buy at this price if you are on the market for a luxury mid-size crossover.
