The GLC series from Mercedes-AMG is getting very confusing, to be honest. It is populated with SUVs and Coupe-SUVs. The GLC series was introduced in the 2016 model year and replaced the outgoing GLK Class. With a contemporary design language and streamlined performance, the GLC is one of the best selling lineups in Mercedes’s arsenal.

The GLC 43 and GLC 63 are the high-performance SUVs in the GLC lineup. There are also the Class Coupes, but they have been reviewed separately. The GLC 43 blends the luxury and sophistication of Mercedes-Benz with the adrenaline-pumping performance very effectively.

2020 GLC 43 gets a refreshed exterior shell. The engine is also re-tuned to churn out 23 extra horses over its predecessor. The interiors are also more plushier and stylish than last year’s model. The infotainment UI gets a few tweaks to make it more appealing to the folks. Locking horns with other German counterparts such as the Audi SQ5, BMW X3 M40i, and the Porsche Cayenne, can this Bremen built SUV dethrone its rivals?

Which trim do we recommend?

Since the GLC 43 is a lone trim, we recommend you equip it with the AMG Performance Studio package that adds jet-black accents, front air-dam splitter, and air-intake fins are finished in deep Gloss Black effect on the side mirrors, the side-window surrounds, rear diffuser trim, and the roof rails.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 43 Engine and Performance

9.0/10

The German giant did not forget to upgrade the powerplant of this high-performance SUV. The Bi-Turbo V6 unit under the hood of the 2020 GLC 43 has been re-tuned to churn out 23 extra hp over its last iteration. The power figure for this hot SUV now stands at 385 hp and 384 lb/ft of peak torque.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 43 comes Bi-Turbo Engine

Transmission duties are taken care of by an AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9-speed Automatic gearbox that transfers the power to all four wheels via AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system. The shifts are instantaneous and lightning quick. The broad ratio spread of 9.15 for gears one to nine allows a clearly perceptible reduction in engine speed and is a decisive factor behind the high level of energy efficiency and ride comfort. Shortened shift and reaction times ensure optimum spontaneity combined with ease of shifting.

The exhaust note of this hot SUV matches its aggressive looks. The moment you push the starter button, the symphonious sound of the engine will make you skip a heartbeat. The sonorous engine is very deceptive though as one might be led to believe that it is not suited for daily driving. However, it is equally at ease inside the city limits as it is on the highway. The peak torque of 384 ft-lbs is available at just 2500 rpm. The fuel economy also aids in its daily drivability.

How fast is it?

The moment you step on the gas of the GLC 63, everything will seem hazy. This compact SUV is breathtakingly fast. The short gear ratios make sure that this German car accelerates fast. Also, at 4149 lbs, it is one of the lightest cars in the segment.

2020 GLC 43 can sprint to 60 from naught under 5 seconds, 4.7 to be exact. This puts it in a neck to neck competition with another German compatriot, the BMW X3 M40i. This Bimmer does the 0-60 run in just 4.6 seconds.

2020 Mercedes-Benz covers 0-60 in just 4.7 sec.

Talking about the quarter-mile run, the Merc is the fastest of the lot. It just takes 13.3 seconds for this SUV to complete a quarter-mile drag race. The Bimmer in contention follows the GLC 43 with a quarter-mile run time of 13.4 seconds. Thus, there is a thin line separating these two German Automotive marvels in terms of acceleration.

How well does it stop?

The Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 comes with large metallic brakes that give a pretty sharp bite. Its front brake is of 14.2 inches and its rear brake is of 12.6 inches. Together these two brakes are quite capable enough to stop this heavy SUV at a safe distance in emergency situations.

Even though the 60-0 mph stopping distance is not available at the moment, we are sure it’ll be one of the best in the segment as the Merc houses the biggest brake rotors in the pack and is the lightest car. The Bimmer takes 109 feet to come to a complete halt from 60 mph.

How does it handle?

The AMG badge comes with a lot of expectations, especially how it handles. And the AMG GLC 43 does not disappoint. It handles as a hot SUV should. The GLC 43 comes with a 4 wheel Multilink suspension. The front steering knuckles and rear-wheel carriers employ high-strength forged aluminum components, reducing weight while enhancing overall stability. The AMG Sport Suspension based on AIR BODY CONTROL has a response time of 60 milliseconds and ensures a butter-smooth ride irrespective of the road conditions.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLS 43 provides quicker steering and lighter effort

ESP Dynamic Cornering Assist along with the Electromechanical power steering ensures that every corner that the GLC 43 takes is a crisp and precise one. The Direct-steer automatically varies the steering ratio based on how far you turn the steering wheel. It provides quicker steering and lighter effort while parking while maintaining excellent directional stability and crisp feedback at higher speeds.

There is also the AMG Dynamic Select that lets you choose between 4 modes, Slippery, Comfort, Sport, and Sport+. These modes alter the throttle response, shift points, air suspension parameters, steering effort, and ECO Start/Stop. A fifth "Individual" mode allows you to create a mode of your own, even letting you set the transmission for purely manual shifting.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 43 Fuel Economy

6.0/10

The AMG GLC 43 has a decent fuel economy. It is not the best in the segment but on par with most of the rivals. In the city, this hot SUV drives for 19 miles for a gallon of gas and on the highway, the figure goes up to 25 miles for the same amount of gas. The combined fuel economy stands at 21 mpg.
