The high-performance 2021 Mercedes-AMG G 63 comes at an aggressive price of $156,450. That’s over $25,000 higher than the base G 550 model. Overall Rating

For most enthusiasts on the planet, they would never need something as extreme as the 2021 Mercedes-AMG G 63 SUV, yet this car has stood the test of time and made a pop-icon out of itself over the years. It is an automotive oddity that should never have survived since it was introduced in the seventies used by either the police or some serious renowned adventurists. Until that time, it is known as the car that sits at the pinnacle of off-road royalty, many cars have come close but none of them have toppled its capability yet.

But over the years, AMG has turned it into a jewelry box, it has so much tech and features inside that it would make some luxury limo owners jealous. The SUV is a serious overland machine all courtesy to its fire breathing twin-turbo engine sitting under the large square hood. The 2021 Mercedes-AMG G 63 SUV does have some serious competition; the capable Lamborghini Urus, the stately Bentley Bentayga, and the BMW X7.

2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG G 63 Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

Mercedes-Benz has never had many issues proving its reliability if not for its ever-changing technology inside the cabin. The cars they built have above-average reliability, can be placed among the top 5 manufacturers easily. But due to their practice, rather a tradition of always putting the newest technology into their vehicles when it comes to the infotainment and the driver assisted tech, Mercedes-Benz has never had much time to prove the reliability with their vehicles. Rest assured, Mercedes-Benz customers had very few complaints even after having the cars for 5-8 years.

Reliability and Ownership Costs

You would be pleased to know that the G63 AMG has had only one recall in 2020, it is detailed as below:

POWER TRAIN: DRIVELINE defect; accidental deactivation of the anti-lock brake system may increase the risk of a crash.

Warranty

Mercedes-AMG does provide some competitive limited and powertrain warranties, they are on par with the rival’s brands offering high-end SUVs. However, there is no complimentary scheduled maintenance, you have to purchase prepaid maintenance plans for an extra cost. The warranty coverage is listed below

2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG G 63 Buying Advice

Since there is a single trim on offer to buy, you won’t exactly be in a dilemma in choosing which one to buy. However, you could take a good look at the packages on offer, they should depend on whether you want more comfort or performance out of your G 63 SUV.

Is buying a used car Mercedes-AMG G 63 SUV a good idea?

There’s no reason why you shouldn't go for a used Mercedes-AMG G63 SUV, the differences between the 2020 and the 2021 model. The G-Class was fully redesigned in 2019, you would have very few examples of the AMG G wagon from the year 2019. Anyway, you would lose out on some standard features like the AMG Trail package, and the AMG Drive Unit which is offered as standard on the 2020 model.

2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG G 63 Engine and Performance

8.0/10

The 2021 Mercedes-AMG G 63 SUV comes with a behemoth twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 under the hood, the engine puts out 577 horsepower and gut-wrenching 627 lb-ft of torque. The performance numbers that this 5800-pound SUV is almost unheard of in the exotic SUV segment. It is almost a shame that you mostly see this SUV doing duties in nightclub parking lots and mini-drag races at the traffic lights, most people don’t even scale even half of the mountain of power this SUV possesses. Use a light foot and the power delivery is quite linear, you will not even feel the weight for a moment. And highway driving is an absolute party, the ease of overtaking is even more phenomenal.

The Urus is a clear winner as far as power and torque figures are concerned.

2021 Mercedes-AMG G 63 SUV Acceleration And Braking Performance

4Matic means the power and torque are fed to all the wheels through a nine-speed automatic gearbox with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. There are three locking differentials with low ranging gearing (2.93:1 reduction) as standard, this helps the 63 SUV scale steep dirt grades as if it was a child's play.

2021 Mercedes-Benz amg g 63 suv cover 0-60 in 4.4 sec

Coming to the on-road performance, the AMG auto box propels the SUV to ridiculous 0-60 times. The torque is almost instant, it seems as if it kicks form just 0 RPMs. Apart from your body which gets pinned to the seat, you will also deeply appreciate the glorious exhaust soundtrack as you see the revs rise. But the auto box is quite intelligent as well, it is refined when you need a more relaxed driving experience. it similarly slips into quite unhurried shifting if you are cruising on the highway and you put in appropriate throttle inputs.

Unsurprisingly, none of the SUVs, though each of them unbelievably quick do not come close to the Urus with the performance figures. Lamborghini has put all their supercar making experience to make it a Super-SUV.

2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG G 63 Fuel Economy

6.0/10

You are not going to find frugality here, this brick of an SUV drinks more than an army on the battlefield. The massively powerful turbocharged V8 is one thirsty engine, and that is easily seen with its EPA figures. And more the load the more fuel it drinks. Mercedes-AMG has thankfully put a large tank here to compensate for that for the drivers who would like to travel interstate.

2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG G 63 Interior

6.5/10

The aggressively rectilinear cabin has been almost a trademark of the G wagon since time immemorial. But now it is like a modern-day tech palace, Mercedes-AMG is always thorough with the tech they put inside their pricier vehicles. There are high-quality materials all around, convenient cupholders and other storages.

2021 Mercedes-Benz amg g 63 suv front seats

Even Rolls-Royce fails to deliver some of the premiums of the G wagon; the interiors are built like a five-star battle tank. The cabin is quite high off the ground and the doors are bulky. It is quite unbelievable the way the opulent cabin mingles with a really old and boxy cabin design. From the air-vents that are styled like a turbine to the stitching to the generosity in the use of leather,

The AMG G 63 SUV has an edge here with both room in the front and the rear row. Mercedes-AMG has showcased their craft in putting together some of the best interiors in the business with almost the perfect mix of drama, style, craftsmanship, and attention to detail. There is plenty of head and legroom in both the front and rear rows; five large adults will find them really comfortable here.

How’s the 2021 Mercedes-AMG G 63 SUV’s infotainment system?

A 12.0-inch infotainment interface comes as standard and it has Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration as standard along with navigation. You get two USB ports and strangely enough, an SD card reader. The central display dominates the infotainment, and it is a high-resolution unit. There is another 12.3-inch cluster display right behind the steering wheel as the gauge cluster.

Mercedes-Benz's Comand system controls the infotainment system through a touchpad controller and some touch control buttons on the steering wheel. The navigation system is useful, it shows navigation map updates without any charge. There is a subscription plan available for Mercedes-Benz's connected car services, it provides remote engine starting and stolen vehicle tracking for a three-year subscription plan. Sound duties are handled by a Burmester surround sound system unit which provides some powerful bass tones.

2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG G 63 Exterior

One look at the SUV and you will not mistake it for anything else than a G wagon; such an icon it has been since the seventies. The design is comically square, the aerodynamics are limited to a brick, but it is what's responsible for the tons of interior space. The aggressive styling makes itself seen; the front fascia is quite in your face.

2021 Mercedes-Benz amg g 63 suv third quarter view

The 20-inch wheels are quite blingy, and there are other AMG styled bits, like the LED headlights housing the advanced high beam assist. There are some functional bits as well which look really good too, such as the gaping mesh intakes which are responsible for offering to cool to some vital parts. Finishing the extravaganza is the power tilt-and-slide glass sunroof.

2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG G 63 Safety

This is a really expensive car so neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) wanted to crash this car and test its safety. Mercedes-AMG has given a miss to a lot of driver-assisted technology that it offers in its other crossovers and SUVs. But the car does have a good host of safety features as standard. The advanced electronic stability system keeps things under control, while there are features like active distance assist and speed limit assist which helps you cruise on the highway. The standard safety features are listed as below

  • A forward-collision system with automated braking
  • adaptive cruise control
  • lane-keeping assist
  • blind-spot monitoring
  • ABS brakes
  • electronic stability system
  • LED headlights
  • speed limit assist
  • active distance assist
  • surround-view camera system
  • active parking assist
  • active rear cross-traffic assist
  • adaptive high beam assist
  • trailer stability assist
  • adaptive braking
  • rain-sensing window wipers

2021 Mercedes-AMG G 63 SUV Vs Bentley Bentayga

Bentley shocked a lot of enthusiasts when it decided to step into the SUV game with the Bentayga, but with time it has done little to damage the company image. The engine and the way the power is put through the wheels is similar to the G 63 SUV. The exterior design means business, it legit makes you look richer than you are. The interiors are impeccably silent and refined. Bentley has never run short of reasons to make people choose the Bentayga over the G 63 AMG.

Bentley Bentayga

2021 Mercedes-AMG G 63 SUV Vs Lamborghini Urus

Bentley has entered, so why should Lamborghini step back. The Urus is an engineering marvel that seems to violate every physics law in the book. The twin-turbo V8 running underneath the hood overshadows the performance put forth by the G 63 by a mile. The design is typical Lamborghini, very angular, and polarising. The car is surprisingly quite capable off-road, however not as capable as the G 63, which also has much roomier interiors as well.

Lamborghini Urus

2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG G 63 Final Verdict

The 2021 Mercedes-AMG G 63 SUV is a modern-day icon, and it is closest to the machine which can do it all, but it comes with a steep price tag as well. The car remains almost unchanged from the 2019 redesign which is not a bad thing considering how well it mingles the traditional styling with modern-day technology and capability. The insanely quick drivetrain is a privilege very few ever get to experience, not to mention the way it defies the laws of physics, it is truly an engineering marvel; an SUV this heavy should rarely pull off sub-4 second 0-60 times. Sure, it does have a huge price tag, but with the talents on offer, it almost sounds like a bargain.
