It is a sportier version of the standard E-Class Convertible, although uses the same high-performance engine that the standard E-Class uses. So in hindsight, it is quick although not necessarily cheap. With a staggering 429 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque, the AMG E-53 Convertible is good enough to stand a chance against segment leaders Porsche, BMW, and Jaguar.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG E 53 Convertible Engine and Performance

8.0/10

Allowing this Cabriolet to cruise is its AMG-enhanced 3.0-Liter inline-6 turbo with EQ boost that churns out a massive 429 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque at the touch of the pedal.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG E 53 Convertible Has a 3.0-Liter Inline 6 Engine

An AMG Speedshift 9-speed Automatic transmission sends power to the rear-biased All-Wheel Drive. The EQ Boost is similar to the traditional hybrid kicking in automatically when the engine is not running providing an additional 21 hp.

The AMG E53 version is the most strongly caffeinated E- Class Cabriolet you can buy.

Underneath the hood, you get a decent 3.0-Liter Inline 6 which produces enough horsepower to leave the rest of the competition out to dust.

How Quick is it from 0-60?

It is insanely quick!, Of Course for a Convertible. The engine and generator combo allow for a 0-60 time in 4.4 seconds. WIth virtually inexistent turbo lag, the battery and turbocharged powered powertrain offers plenty of power to get the E53 Coupe to a quoted top speed of 135mph.

As the times for all the cars are out, it is evident from the above data as well that the Porsche 718 Convertible takes the shortest time to do 0-60, one main reason is the much less Curb weight and better riding maneuverability, and last but certainly not the least, it’s from Porsche! Do we need to say anything more?

How well does it Handle?

The AMG E53’s growling engine can spark goosebumps in every purist’s heart. The E53 Cabriolet feels planted and it’s AMG Speedshift 9-speed automatic transmission makes downshifting fun. The Comfort mode allows you to cruise almost effortlessly along Mountain top roads, whereas the shift of Dynamic Setting from Cruise mode to Sport plus mode definitely changes the demeanor into what you expect from the AMG marvels. There is quite a bit of body-roll around corners all because of it being a 4556 lbs machine.

What about the Braking Performance?

The brakes on the E53 Cabriolet are a bit on the stronger side to match the engine performance. The pedal feels firm and composed. In Hindsight, you need large brake rotor discs to bring this atrociously heavy vehicle to a halt. The AMG E53 Convertible is equipped with 14.6-inch rotor discs in the front and slightly smaller 14.2-inch rotors in the back.

Porsche Active Stability Management(PASM) helps the car to keep a stable character even during hard braking and prevents the nose from diving into the ground, and this is evident in it’s stopping distance of a mere 99 ft. The Bimmer being heavy commands much larger diameter rotor discs.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG E 53 Convertible Fuel Economy

7.0/10

For a Car like this, the fuel economy does matter to an extent while going on long road trips. This has been taken care of by Mercedes, providing a class best of a combined 23 miles to the gallon, which considering it’s from a German Manufacture is commendable at best.

The Porsche 718 Convertible is surprisingly frugal than it’s previous variants giving a decent 21 miles to the gallon. The Porsche comes the closest to the leaders Merc and Jaguar F-Type Convertible.

Keeping you comfortable inside is the Standard dual-zone climate control, Multicolor Ambient Lighting. Coming to the infotainment system, you get two 12.3-inch high-resolution displays, with all the savvy tech features included for you accompanied by the heated and ventilated seats wherein you can sit back relax and enjoy those long mountain-top roads.

Seating and comfort

One of the main reasons for opting a Convertible is because it provides comfort like none other for you to cruise around town with the top down. Mercedes has got you covered in that aspect by providing heated and ventilated multi-Contour seats with massage. Entry to the rear space is easy with a decent amount of head and Legroom with the top down but feels a little sluggish in terms of Shoulder room.

The low build of the F-Type poses a major problem for getting in or out. Rest in terms of Cabin Space, all the competitors are on par with each other.

How much Cargo can it take in?

Cargo Space is Plentiful in the AMG E53 Cabriolet with 9.5 cu-ft. If that’s not enough, you get rear foldable seats to widen your cargo space. But then again, who would want to stack their heavy luggage in a 429 hp convertible. It could have used a bit more Cargo Space, if not for the Convertible Setup that gives you a decent amount of rear cabin space, but then eats away the cargo Space a bit.
