You know it’s not an ordinary Merc when you see the AMG badge. AMG or Aufrecht, Melcher and Großaspach is the high-performance division of Mercedes, just like M-Series is for BMW and S-Series is for Audi. The C 43 sedan slots between the standard Mercedes-Benz C 300 and the beastly AMG C 63 sedan.

9.9/10

The AMG C 43 slots between the Benz branded C 300 and the raucous AMG C 63. It is powered by the same engine that was found under the hood of its predecessor. The Bi-Turbo V6 is re-tuned by AMG to churn out 23 extra horses than last years’.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG C 43 Engine and Performance

9.0/10

AMG has re-tuned the motor under the hood of the 2020 Mercedes-AMG C 43. It now produces 23 more horses than last year. The power figure of the Bi-Turbo V6 unit stands at 385 hp and 384 lb-ft of peak torque. Transmission duties are taken care of by an AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9-speed Automatic gearbox that transfers the power to all four wheels via AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG C 43 Sedan has 3.0L Bi-turbo V6

The shifts are really quick, 80 milliseconds to be precise. The gear ratios are also broad and short which aids in quick acceleration. AMG claims that this new transmission system is also more fuel-efficient than before.

Power delivery is linear across the rev-band. Thus, it is at ease both in the city and on the highway. The BMW M340i is the prime rival of this Merc. It boasts a similar power figure and performance. However, with the peak torque available at just 1800 rpm, it probably is better suited for driving in the city than the Merc. On the highway though, both cars are extremely fun to drive.

How fast is it?

The 2020 AMG C 43 sedan is neck smackingly fast. With the power of extra 23 horses, it is a tad bit faster than its predecessor. The moment you step on the brushed aluminum pedals, you will be pushed back against the DINAMICA covered hand-stitched bucket seats. Just to give you an estimate of how fast it is, it takes 4.5 seconds to reach 60 mph from naught.

Exclusively designed for this car, the front axle and wider track along with the AMG tuned 4Matic AWD system gives this sedan better grip that aids acceleration. The AWD system is also 39:41 rear biased that gives this car a quicker boost as compared to other cars. The Bimmer matches this Merc, if not betters it, as far as acceleration is concerned. The M340i takes just 4.4 seconds to reach 60 mph.

How well does it stop?

This performance oriented sedan ships with the AMG Performance Braking System that makes the AMG C 43 track ready. However, this braking system is also efficient in the city driving conditions. The ventilated disc brakes are not drilled but die-casted. This gives the rotors longevity and better heat dissipating abilities.

The C 43 has the shortest 60-0 stopping distance which is 109 feets. This is largely due to the low curb weight of this sedan which stands at 3825 lbs. Couple them with probably the largest brake rotors, and you have a car that has exceptional braking performance.

How does it handle?

The AMG badge comes with a lot of expectations, especially how it handles. And the AMG C 43 does not disappoint. It handles as a high performance sedan should. The C 43 comes with a 4 wheel Multi Link suspension. The front steering knuckles and rear-wheel carriers employ high-strength forged aluminum components, reducing weight while enhancing overall stability. The AMG Sport Suspension based on AIR BODY CONTROL has a response time of 60 milliseconds and ensures a butter-smooth ride irrespective of the road conditions.

2020 Mercedes Benz AMG C43 Front View

ESP Dynamic Cornering Assist along with the Electromechanical power steering ensures that every corner that the C 43 takes is a crisp and precise one. The Direct-steer automatically varies the steering ratio based on how far you turn the steering wheel. It provides quicker steering and lighter effort while parking while maintaining excellent directional stability and crisp feedback at higher speeds.

There is also the AMG Dynamic Select that lets you choose between 4 modes, Slippery, Comfort, Sport, and Sport+. These modes alter the throttle response, shift points, air suspension parameters, steering effort, and ECO Start/Stop. A fifth "Individual" mode allows you to create a mode of your own, even letting you set the transmission for purely manual shifting.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG C 43 Fuel Economy

7.0/10

Mercedes’s claims of the new AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT gearbox being more fuel efficient is under serious scrutiny here. Yes, it is more fuel-efficient than the AMG models of yesteryears. However, when compared to its class rivals, it falls well short.

When driving inside the city limits, the 2020 AM C 43 will drive 19 miles for a gallon of gas. Come the freeways and this hot sedan will drive for 27 miles for the same amount of gas.  However, it is no match to the Bimmer in this regard. The M340i has far superior fuel-economy than the Merc. Thus, if fuel-economy is your priority, BMW M340i should be your pick.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG C 43 Interior

9.0/10

The finely curated and premium interiors of the 2020 AMG C 43 justifies the price tag of this hot sedan. Seats come covered in premium DINAMICA upholstery. Heated front seats are standard whereas heated rear seats come with an additional package. The seats are well bolstered with lumbar and massaging capabilities. There is ample amount of space in both rows of seats. We would recommend the sedan over the other two body styles as the access to the rear seats is easier because of the 4 door style.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG C 43 Sedan Front Seat

The upper dash and doors are elegantly upholstered in richly grained MB-Tex and impeccably topstitched. The flat bottomed steering wheel comes covered in ventilated Napa-Leather with extra grip. There is also a seam at 12 'o'clock position that lets you know the default position. The view of the digital instrument cluster is also good.

The Carbon fiber trim of center console along with the red seat belts and brushed Aluminum pedals reflect on the AMG side of the C 43. Not ‘AMG’esque enough? There’s also the red floor mats. The 2020 AMG C 43 gets a 64 color ambient LED lighting as standard. Thus, let colors reflect your mood.

What's there to keep you entertained?

The 2020 AMG C 43 gets an updated 10.25” infotainment screen that runs with the latest version of Mercedes’s Command UI. Thus, you won’t get the “Hey Mercedes” voice control feature as it is available only with the MBUX UI. However, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard.

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG C 43 Sedan Infotainment

Audio is taken care of by a 13-speaker 590 watts Burmester Surround Sound system. This system is custom made for the C-Class and houses a 9 channel amplifier that fills every inch of the cabin of the C 43 with rich and vibrant sound.

How much cargo can it store?

The 2020 AMG C 43 has one of the smallest cargo spaces of the segment. With 12.6 cubic feet, it falls well behind the rivals in this regard. The Lexus GS 350, with 18.4 cubic feet leads the pack followed by the BMW M340i with 17 cubic feet of cargo space.

The 2020 AMG C 43 looks awfully similar to the models of yesteryears. The grille that houses the coveted ‘three pointed star’ is borrowed from the Benz C 300 and does not look anything like the AMG specific grille. The front air dams and flared side sills are redesigned to look more contemporary. The optional 19” AMG wheels give this hot sedan a much needed aggressive stance.

The side profile is sleek and looks elegant, largely due to the long-hood/short-deck design language. There are no unnecessary body lines that make this car look very upscale. On the contrary, Mercedes intelligently uses curves to accentuate the overall look of this car. The rear end looks very curvy. The U shaped boot lid seamlessly integrates with the curvy LED taillamps giving it a very stylish look.

The Optional AMG exterior CArbon Fiber package reflects the rich racing heritage of AMG and adds carbon fiber sculpted side mirror housings and rear spoiler.

Mercedes-AMG C 43 vs BMW M340i

Perhaps the most interesting face-off, both of these German high-performance sedans give each other a run for their money. With similar motors under the hood, it’s not quite surprising that they have similar performance. The cabins of both the cars are spacious and upscale. However, the AMG has a slight advantage over the Bimmer in terms of styling and features. However, when it comes to fuel-economy, the Merc is no match for the X340i. Thus, choosing either of the cars among the two will ultimately depend on your likes and dislikes.

2020 BMW m340I

Mercedes-AMG C 43 vs Lexus GS 350

The Mercedes outweighs the Lexus in terms of luxury and power. However, the Lexus hits right back with its reliability, practicality and fuel economy. When it comes to styling, both of these cars stick to their distinctive design languages. However, the standard features list is more impressive on the German car while you’ll earn more resale value with the Japanese one.

2020 Lexus GS 350

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG C 43 Final Verdict

8.8/10

The Mercedes-AMG C 43 is a surprisingly good car. It has an elegant design language that is  very well matched by its performance and handling. The interiors are very upscale and comfortable. The standard feature list is rich enough to make its rivals envious. Add to that a wide range of standard safety features and you have a car that is really easy to recommend.
