The range-topping version of the McLaren Sports series, the 2021 McLaren 620R Coupe is McLaren’s entry-level lineage of sports cars. It is a specimen that trades all the civility and comfort so you can get some quick lap times. Yes, the car has been stripped off most of the creature comforts that you normally see inside a coupe of this price range, and instead, it is honed to be a razor-sharp track tool.

The 620R Coupe slots above the 600LT in the range, but it is essentially a road-going version of the 570S GT4. This is why the car is nearly identical to the 570S GT4, but the engine now boasts of more power since it is no longer bound by the racing regulations. The 620R Coupe is the real deal, the closest you can buy something like a GT4 competition-spec racer with just enough modifications made to make it road legal. You can order the car with the factory-applied sponsor graphics still in the car.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The Speedy Kiwi has set benchmarks in the world of performance vehicles, and it aims to make a statement with the 2021 620R. A bare bones' mentalist that has almost non-existent assistance features to make it a purists dream. It has the perfect weight distribution and aerodynamic enhancements to make it quick and balanced.

The competitors to the 2021 McLaren 620R Coupe include the 2021 Lamborghini Huracan Evo, the 2021 Ferrari F8 Tributo and the 2021 Audi R8 Coupe.

The 2021 McLaren 620R Coupe is a sole trim in of itself.

2021 Mclaren 620R Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

McLaren has been quite untouchable when it comes to reliability, the plant where the cars are made don’t take perfect as good enough. Making a supercar is no joke, even better, making it reliable is even harder. The brand McLaren, fortunately, focuses on reliability too as they do with the other aspects of the supercar. The dominance McLaren have in the automotive industry is hue, they are the second most successful team in F1 after Ferrari. Yes, the carts are designed for pure performance, but the owners will also feel quite relieved that McLaren does not ignore reliability as well and their cars run longer without any problems, for the most part, something which cannot be said for most cars in this price range.

Reliability and Ownership Costs

The 620R Coupe shouldn’t be too expensive to run that their other known road-going cars, then again there's the fact that the car has much lesser creature comforts than the others so that helps as well.

Warranty

McLaren has not made any statements about the warranty package of the car, it is something which we will come to know when the car is on sale.

Miles Per Dollar

As specified before the running costs should not be any different than the other road-going cars in the McLaren Sports Series line-up. However, do note that this car is also unlike anything other in the line-up, the car is essentially a GT4 vehicle and it has been stripped of all creature comforts that usually you would see in the other cars of the range.

2021 Mclaren 620R Buying Advice

A single trim is on offer here so it should be a really easy decision when you find yourself buying this coupe. Do have your eyes open while buying this car though, this car will not pamper the passengers inside the car, it is an out and out track tool. So if you want something with a lot of creature comforts then you should look somewhere else because this car will not do that for you.

Is buying a used car McLaren 620R Coupe a good idea?

This car is yet to go on sale and only 350 units will be sold, so there are no used examples you will find.

2021 Mclaren 620R Engine and Performance

The engine under the hood is actually a familiar one, it is the 3.8-liter V-8 that you would have also sewen in the 570S. but that’s not where the story ends, the engine is tuned up to make 612 horsepower and 457 pound-feet of torque; this makes it the most powerful car in the Sports Series line-up. Not only this scintillating number 50 hp more than what the 570S produces, but the 570S GT4 also makes just 500 horsepower due to the GT regulations. The engine has such vast reserves of power, you will barely wake it up in everyday traffic. Not only is the 620R's iteration of 3.8-liter V-8 insanely powerful, but it also makes the most savage soundtrack. The exhaust is so loud and animalistic, the sound even gets through the padding of your helmet (considering you are wearing one).

The F8 Tributo is significantly more powerful and torquey as compared to anything in this comparison. The Huracan Performante and the R8 have similar engine displacements, however, differ largely in terms of performance figures.

2021 McLaren 620R Coupe Acceleration And Braking Performance

The transmission duties are handled by a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, which sends the power to the rear wheels. The gearbox shifts through the gears swiftly and the car is extremely quick off the line. The car pulls off some blistering 0-60 times and speeds a lot faster than that.

2021 Mclaren 620r coupe cover 0-60 in 2.8 sec

The hardware provided for braking is competitive spec, and the job is done impressively. McLaren has fitted aluminum brake calipers along with carbon-ceramic discs on all four wheels. Carbon-ceramic discs make a vast difference here as they not only more durable than steel brakes, but are also lighter, which helps keep the unsprung weight down. McLaren also says that they have worked on the pedal response, so they modulate it just as it would have been on a race track.

2021 Mclaren 620R Fuel Economy

McLaren has spoken absolutely nothing about fuel economy. No reason they should, track tools like these are meant to be gas-guzzlers and almost nobody ever thinks about fuel economy when they are buying something like this.

The 620R Coupe has a fantastic speculated driving range, but almost nobody would want to be in the car for 437 miles straight. All the other coupes seem lack luster in comparison to the smart efficiency that the 620R coupe offers.

2021 Mclaren 620R Interior

Probably the least favorite part of this car, even for the civilians who are well aware of its racing credentials. For starters, the cabin is almost dismal with quality. The noise and refinement levels are far from acceptable, even at the modest speeds you will feel every buzz and vibration from the surface of the road. Even the carpet and the glovebox has been removed to save weight. It does almost the residual soundproofing served no purpose as well.

2021 Mclaren 620r coupe front seats

A roll cage has been added, not that it matters here, but it surprisingly is by far the biggest change between the cabins of the 620R and the 570S GT4. The ride is quite punishing, and the tight-fitting carbon-fiber bucket seats offer no help. The time spent on rough tarmac will be the most agonizing time of your life sitting in a car seat; it’s like seat massaging function turned vigorously to the max.

How’s the 2021 McLaren 620R Coupe’s infotainment system?

Limited details have been revealed about the infotainment system of the car. You do get a vertically mounted touchscreen but the primary use for the screen is record race t3elemetry data. It is quite humorous to think McLaren has included a Bowers & Wilkins speaker upgrade as a $4410 option. Why? Beyond 50 mph, good luck trying to recognize which song is being played. At that point, a $20 pair of headphones would do a better job frankly.

2021 Mclaren 620R Exterior

Fortunately, there is no doom and gloom here. the first thing you’ll notice the car looks identical to the 570S GT4. The racing livery is optional but the 620R comes with a different paint theme as optional. They redesign the bumper at the front, a one-piece splitter is featured here. On each side of the front fascia, you’ll find curved wing lets and under the nose, there is a larger intake as compared to the 570S GT4.

The front hood is carbon fiber and also features what looks like nostrils, which were also present in the 570S GT4 albeit they were larger in the latter. The 570S GT4 also had quick-release ins for the hood, but they have skipped them for the Coupe. As much as they looked good, they make little sense on a road car.

2021 Mclaren 620r coupe third quarter view

The biggest talking point here is the increase of downforce which is there because of including a lot of dive planes, they create vortices of low-pressure air. This helps in increasing the downforce by accelerating the airflow from the under and the sides of the car which not only cools the brakes but also sucks the air out and pulls the car closer to the ground. Speaking of the sides, the car also features some sharp side skirts which are pulled off directly from the 570S GT4. Other subtle yet significant bits pulled straight out of the race car are the enlarged door intakes, the ride height is the same too.

The dry weight of the 620R Coupe is almost unheard of in a V8 car, it shows the intent of McLaren with their weight saving and stripping the car of anything unnecessary.

2021 Mclaren 620R Safety

There are absolutely no details about the safety tech inside the car, something which will only be known when the car is on sale, or McLaren releases some details about the safety tech of the car. The only safety hardware clear till now is the race-spec roll cage.

2021 Mclaren 620R Competition

2021 McLaren 620R Coupe Vs Lamborghini Huracan Performante

The Lamborghini Huracan Performante is like the 620R Coupe in many aspects. This also is a track-ready version of a competition-spec car that Lamborghini races in various competitions. This car is even more aggressive with the exteriors, not only does it look extremely sharp but a lot of the bits on the skin of this car are responsible for a lot of downforces, about 50% percent more downforce than the standard Huracan. Also, it’s marginally powerful than the 620R, and costs just as much.

Lamborghini Huracan Performante

2021 McLaren 620R Coupe Vs Ferrari F8 Tributo

Though the Ferrari F8 Tributo may not be marketed directly as a track weapon, it is the track-ready version of the saner 488 GTB. This car is not as aggressive with its rear wing as the other two cars, but it sure does incorporate a lot of downforce from the aero elements on the exterior. Wait till you hear the best part, it makes nearly 100 hp more than the 620R, however, it’s not as quick.

2021 Mclaren 620R Final Verdict

Make no mistake, this car is an out-and-out track weapon, and the 2021 McLaren 620R Coupe is strictly only about that life. If you are expecting comfort, everyday usability, you will get nothing of that sort here. It’s just like McLaren says, "handles like a race car, performs like a race car and feels like a race car." and you better believe them when they say that. All things considered, the enthusiast in you should be glad that something like this exists. Though only 350 examples will be made, you better believe that some of those owners would want this, the most aggressive and powerful McLaren ever built.
