The 2021 Mazda CX-9 will be very similar to the outgoing model but with some updates to make it more relevant and competitive. The crossover is powered by a 2.5L turbocharged engine that produces 250 horsepower and is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

For the 2021 model, Mazda refreshed the prices and introduced a slight bump and now the base variant starts from $33,960 and the top-spec Signature trim starts from $46,605 which comes standard with AWD version. CX-9 will face stiff competition from other mid-size crossover SUVs in the market like the Honda Passport, Hyundai Palisade, Volkswagen Atlas. Here’s our take on the 2021 Mazda CX-9 that is soon going to be on sale in the market.

Overall Rating

A very good looking mid-size crossover SUV from the Japanese automaker, the Mazda CX-9 has been in production since April 2006. Currently, in its second generation of production since the 2016 model year, the 2021 CX-9 is a part of the same generation. Although being a mid-size SUV, the CX-9 is actually the biggest SUV that Mazda makes.

Being a carryover model, the 2021 Mazda CX-9 is expected to be available in four different trim levels as the outgoing model viz. Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, and Signature. The base Sport trim should start off with a long list of standard luxury and safety features and as you go up the trim level, the car gets equipped with additional sets of features and enhancements. Nonetheless, all the trims should be powered by the same 2.5L Turbocharged Inline-4 engine mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

2021 Mazda CX-9 Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

The Japanese automakers are known for their build quality and tremendous reliability and the Mazda CX-9 is no exception. The CX-9 feels like it is built to last. The build quality feels solid and some of the most premium and good grade materials are used inside and out.

Reliability and Ownership Costs

It is not a surprise that the 2020 Mazda CX-9 managed to get an astounding 85 out of 100 in J.D.Power’s Quality and Reliability rating, but rapid depreciation of the car resulted in a below-average score of 74 out of 100 in Resale Value rating. The 2021 model should also be in a similar ballpark, if not the same.

In terms of ownership costs, the Mazda CX-9 costs what is typical for your average mid-size crossover SUV. On average, you will have to shell out roughly about $55,000 to $67,000 in 5 years in terms of ownership cost when you buy a brand new Mazda CX-9. This is not a surprise for a decently up-market sporty crossover SUV. But the CX-9 does tend to depreciate in value quite quickly, which affects its resale value.

The average price paid for the 2020 Mazda CX-9 is about $33,233. The people from Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon, Atlanta, and Delaware enjoy the lowest prices as they have exempted the sales taxes. Considering the fact that the 2020 Mazda CX-9 has no recalls till now and only a single complaint, it showcases the good build quality and tremendous reliability of Mazda cars.

Warranty

Just like the 2020 model, the 2021 Mazda CX-9 will also be backed up by your regular array of limited warranties, typical for any car in the crossover SUV segment. The warranties expected to be included for the 2021 Mazda CX-9 are:

Criteria

Period

New Vehicle Limited Warranty

3 years/ 36,000 miles

Powertrain Limited Warranty

5 years/ 60,000 miles

Roadside Assistance Program

3 years / 36,000 miles

The warranty scheme for the Mazda CX-9 is quite underwhelming to be honest, especially with competitors providing better warranties than it. Hyundai offers a powertrain warranty for 10 years or 100,000 miles and a complimentary maintenance schedule of 3 years or 36,000 which makes it the best warranty coverage in the American market.

Miles Per Dollar

Considering driving for 15,000 miles per year on average and a running cost of around $2300 and a yearly maintenance cost of $440, Mazda CX-9 stands roughly in the neighborhood of 5-6 miles per dollar.

2021 Mazda CX-9 Buying Advice

Just like the 2020 model, the 2021 Mazda CX-9 is available in four different trim levels viz. Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, and Signature. And although the base Sport trim should be adequate enough for most people with its long list of standard and luxury features, the Grand Touring trim is the spot in terms of bang for your buck. You get a whole lot of luxury upgrades for your price which is quite worth the extra cash and make your experience in the car a whole lot better.

Is buying a used car Mazda CX-9 a good idea?

Since Japanese cars are pretty well made and are very reliable, which is evident from J.D. Power’s reports as well, buying a used Mazda CX-9 should never be an issue, given the car has been decently well maintained and regularly serviced. But the CX-9 did score a below-average score of 74 out of 100 in the Resale Value rating which does correlate with the car depreciation rate. Although being a decently low maintenance car for its segment, the used Mazda CX-9s tend to lose somewhere around 21% of its value in its first year, which although is not the worst, but is not that good at the same time

2021 Mazda CX-9 Engine and Performance

8.9/10

Being a carryover model, the 2021 Mazda CX-9 is powered by the same 2.5L turbocharged Inline 4-cylinder engine capable of producing 227 HP and 310 lb-ft of torque on 87 Octane regular unleaded fuel, or 250 HP and 320 lb-ft of torque on 93 Octane premium unleaded fuel.

2021 Mazda CX-9 Engine

The power is realized at the wheels with the help of a six-speed automatic transmission while AWD drivetrain configuration is optional except in Signature trim.

Although not one of the most powerful cars in the bunch, the Mazda CX-9 is decently powerful with respect to its engine capacity. That being said, you could always churn out more power by using high-octane fuel. Hyundai Palisade proves that there is no replacement for displacement and number of cylinders as it makes the most amount of grunt with its big V6 motor

2021 Mazda CX-9 Acceleration And Braking Performance

The 2.5L turbocharged Inline-4 engine mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission is capable of catapulting the car from 0 to 60 mph in 7.1 seconds and all the way up to 130 mph.

2021 Mazda CX-9 Accelerate 0-60 MPH Just In 7.1 Sec.

With regards to the brakes in the car, CX-9 is equipped with 12.6” vented discs at the front with 12.8” solid discs at the back with 4-wheel 4-channel ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist.

Not one of the quickest of the bunch, the performance figures of the Mazda is typical for your regular mid-size crossover SUV. Nonetheless, the Mazda CX-9 is comparatively more athletic than most of its competitors and its sporty characteristics more than make up for it.

2021 Mazda CX-9 Fuel Economy

8.5/10

The 2020 CX-9 being one of the most fuel economical cars in the segment, the 2021 model is also expected to be the same, if not better. The 2.5L turbocharged Inline-4 powering the CX-9 is capable of delivering an impressive combined mileage of 24 mpg on average.

Although somewhat similar in terms of fuel economy, the CX-9 is definitely the winner here with the most economical mileage figures. Honda has the largest fuel tank among the competition but still, CX-9 offers maximum range among the rivals thanks to a small four-cylinder engine and a big fuel-tank capacity.

2021 Mazda CX-9 Interior

8.2/10

Apart from a few minor changes, the interior of the 2021 Mazda CX-9 should almost be the same as the outgoing model. The sporty characteristics of the car continue inside as well with a beautifully designed sporty looking interior. Overall, the interior is quite simple and elegant and also being very ergonomic at the same time.

  2021 Mazda CX-9 Seats

The interior materials are quite premium for its segment and good soundproofing makes the cabin very quiet and comfortable on the road. Moreover, the Mazda CX-9 is a great pick for someone looking for a car with 3-row seating. Depending on the trim you choose, it could either be got as a 6-seater or a 7-seater option. The 6-seater option provides you with captain’s chairs in the second row.

However, it comes with a long list of interior features which includes Leather Upholstery on seats, dashboard, steering wheel, and gear knob, Nappa Leather Upholstery (standard on Signature trim/optional on others), Multifunction heated steering wheel, Heated and Ventilated Front Seats with Memory, Power Adjustable Driver Seat with power adjustable lumbar support, Three-zone Automatic Climate Control with Pollen Filter, LED Accent Lighting and Glass Moonroof.

How’s the 2021 Mazda CX-9 infotainment system?

Apart from the base Sport trim is equipped with a 10.3-inch touchscreen display for the infotainment system, which is now standard across the range and comes with the Mazda Connect infotainment system. As for the instrumentation goes, the Sport and Touring trim should feature a 4.6” LCD meter display, while the more expensive Grand Touring and Signature trim should come equipped with a bigger 7” LCD meter display.

2021 Mazda CX-9 Dashboard

The infotainment system comes equipped with most of the basic features like Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, auxiliary audio input jack, USB audio input, steering wheel-mounted controls along with HD Radio. Moreover, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration are available from the Touring trim onwards.

2021 Mazda CX-9 Exterior

8.1/10

Being a carryover model, the exterior of the 2021 Mazda CX-9 should remain mostly the same as the 2020 model. Although the looks of a car are highly subjective, the Mazda CX-9 is overall a very good looking car.

2021 Mazda CX-9 Seats Third Quarter View

It looks quite sharp and sporty which complements its overall sporty characteristics and it definitely has a unique road presence which is hard to match. The sleek headlamps along with a forward-leaning grille and a sleek roofline give the car a modern look to it.

The Volkswagen Atlas has the longest wheelbase in this comparison which results in a practical and ultra-spacious cabin. The third row is usable for adults as well.

2021 Mazda CX-9 Safety

8.1/10

The 2020 Mazda CX-9 managed to score a perfect 5 out of 5 stars in NHTSA’s crash test, although it scored 4 out 5 stars in the front crash test results and the rollover test where it has a rollover risk of 15.90%. That being said, the 2021 CX-9 is also expected to be just as safe as the 2020 model, if not better.

Some of the highlight active and passive safety features of expected to be equipped the 2021 Mazda CX-9 includes:

  • Roll Stability Control
  • Hill Launch Assist
  • Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Lane-keep Assist
  • Lane Departure Warning System
  • Advanced Smart City Brake Support with Pedestrian Detection
  • Smart Brake Support with Collision Warning

2021 Mazda CX-9 Competition

8.5/10

2021 Mazda CX-9 Vs Hyundai Palisade

A very tough competitor to the Mazda, the Hyundai Palisade is also a very appealing car in this segment. With plenty of space inside and better 3rd-row seating than the Mazda, the Hyundai has the potential to give the Mazda a run for its money.

2021 Hyundai Palisade

The Palisade also has a long list of standard and optional high-tech features but does fall behind the Mazda when it comes to fuel economy.

2021 Mazda CX-9 Vs Volkswagen Atlas

From the Germans, we have the Volkswagen Atlas competing in the mid-size crossover SUV segment. The Atlas is also a good choice for people needing 3rd-row seating in their car and the Atlas also does a very good job at it.

2021 Volkswagen Atlas

But just like the Hyundai, it also falls behind the Mazda in terms of fuel economy and the overall dynamic of the car, which is quite bland as compared to the Mazda.

2021 Mazda CX-9 Final Verdict

With an attractive exterior, beautifully designed premium interior, and an overall sporty and athletic characteristic, the Mazda CX-9 is a tough car to beat in the mid-size crossover SUV segment. Although it is an excellent choice for people who need 3rd-row seating in their car, the 3rd row is quite cramped in the Mazda and there are other cars out there in the market like the Hyundai Palisade and the Volkswagen Atlas that do a better job at it. Nonetheless, the long list of standard luxury and safety features makes the Mazda an excellent choice.
