The 2021 Mazda CX-9 is one of the best handling three-row SUVs, that certainly offers athletic driving engagement with a turbocharged four-cylinder under the hood. The Mazda's interior offers a luxurious experience of German offerings and comes loaded with plenty of standard and optional features. The exterior is familiar, sleek, and modern yet a bit underrated and comes with premium paint options. A generous list of standard driver-assistance features adds confidence to the brand's hallmark driving impression.

The 2021 CX-9 model sees some minor changes after getting more torque and driver-assist features last year, to keep it fresh in front of rivals. Majorly impacting the styling and amenities, the 2021 update includes a larger infotainment screen and a new Carbon Edition package based on CX-9 Touring. Priced from $33,960, the base 2021 Mazda CX-9 Sport offers a host of goodies, while the top-range CX-9 Signature goes upto an MSRP of $46,605 with standard i-Active AWD.

Expert Review

Overall Rating

A very good looking mid-size crossover SUV from the Japanese automaker, the  2021 Mazda CX-9 combines a driving verve of sports sedan and practicality of a three-row SUV. Currently, in its second generation introduced for the 2016 model year, the 2021 CX-9 is a face-lifted rather than an all-new model. Not much has changed under the hood which has a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder still producing 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque on premium gasoline while the power drops to 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque on regular fuel.

The Mazda CX-9 offers a rare combination of the family-friendly and driver-friendly SUV. Mazda's largest vehicle also happens to have so many features along with wonderful styling inside and out- almost matching the luxury standards. The CX-9 also has great reliability ratings, excellent gas mileage, great driver assistance technology, and good crash test scores. For the $33,960 starting price, it certainly feels more expensive than it actually is.

2021 Mazda CX-9 Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

The Japanese automakers are known for their build quality and tremendous reliability, and the Mazda CX-9 is no exception. The 2021 CX-9 is built to last as some of the most premium-grade materials are used inside and out.

What are the 2021 Mazda CX-9's Reliability and Ownership Cost?

It is not a surprise that the 2021 Mazda CX-9 managed to get a good 77 out of 100 in J.D.Power’s Quality and Reliability rating, but rapid depreciation of the car resulted in a below-average score of 74 out of 100 in Resale Value rating. The 2021 model should also be in a similar ballpark, if not the same.

Mazda CX-9 has a proven reliability record!

Apart from the CX-9's great reputation for reliability, it comes with an excellent fuel economy, superb driver assistance technology, and admirable crash test scores. Among the equipment available is a nearly clairvoyant i-ACTIV all-wheel-drive system.

In terms of ownership costs, the Mazda CX-9 costs what is typical for your average mid-size crossover SUV. On average, you will have to shell out roughly about $55,000 to $67,000 in 5 years in terms of ownership cost when you buy a brand new Mazda CX-9. This is not a surprise for a decently up-market sporty crossover SUV. But the CX-9 does tend to depreciate in value quite quickly, which affects its resale value.

Tax Credit

Taxes & Fees

True Cost to Own

The average price paid for the 2020 Mazda CX-9 is about $33,233. The people from Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon, Atlanta, and Delaware enjoy the lowest prices as they have exempted the sales taxes. Considering the fact that the 2020 Mazda CX-9 has no recalls till now and only a single complaint, it showcases the good build quality and tremendous reliability of Mazda cars.

What's the Warranty coverage with the 2021 Mazda CX-9?

Just like the 2020 model, the 2021 Mazda CX-9 will also be backed up by your regular array of limited warranties, typical for any car in the crossover SUV segment. The warranties expected to be included for the 2021 Mazda CX-9 are:

New Vehicle Limited Warranty

3 years/ 36,000 miles

Powertrain Limited Warranty

5 years/ 60,000 miles

Roadside Assistance Program

3 years / 36,000 miles

The warranty scheme for the Mazda CX-9 is quite underwhelming to be honest, especially with competitors providing better warranties than it. Hyundai offers a powertrain warranty for 10 years or 100,000 miles and a complimentary maintenance schedule of 3 years or 36,000 which makes it the best warranty coverage in the American market.

What're the Miles Per Dollar cost of the 2021 Mazda CX-9?

Considering driving for 15,000 miles per year on average and a running cost of around $2300 and a yearly maintenance cost of $440, Mazda CX-9 stands roughly in the neighborhood of 5-6 miles per dollar.

2021 Mazda CX-9 Buying Advice

Just like the 2020 model, the 2021 Mazda CX-9 is available in four different trim levels viz. Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, and Signature. And although the base Sport trim should be adequate enough for most people with its long list of standard and luxury features, the Grand Touring trim is the spot in terms of bang for your buck. You get a whole lot of luxury upgrades for your price which is quite worth the extra cash and make your experience in the car a whole lot better.

Is buying a used car Mazda CX-9 a good idea?

Since Japanese cars are pretty well made and are very reliable, which is evident from J.D. Power’s reports as well, buying a used Mazda CX-9 should never be an issue, given the car has been decently well maintained and regularly serviced. But the CX-9 did score a below-average score of 74 out of 100 in the Resale Value rating which does correlate with the car depreciation rate. Although being a decently low maintenance car for its segment, the used Mazda CX-9s tend to lose somewhere around 21% of its value in its first year, which although is not the worst, but is not that good at the same time

Confused about buying a new or used Mazda CX-9, below is everything!

Here are the key changes for the second-generation Mazda CX-9 which was last redesigned for the 2016 model year:

2021 Mazda CX-9 Engine and Performance

Being mechanically unchanged, the 2021 Mazda CX-9 is powered by a familiar 2.5L turbocharged Inline 4-cylinder engine producing  250 HP and 320 lb-ft of torque on 93 Octane premium unleaded fuel while the figures drop to 227 HP and 310 lb-ft of torque on 87 Octane regular unleaded fuel. The CX-9's six-speed automatic transmission offers seamless shifts and comes standard with Front-wheel-drive. The all-wheel-drive is available and standard on the CX-9 Signature.

2021 Mazda CX-9's turbocharged engine never feels underpowered!

The 2.5-liter engine makes the CX-9 quick off the line and makes most of its 320 lb-ft of torque at as-low-as 2,000 rpm. Using smart exhaust management, Mazda’s CX-9 crossover SUV offers quick throttle response which virtually erases that minor turbo lag as well.

Although not one of the most powerful cars in the bunch, the Mazda CX-9 is decently powerful with respect to its engine capacity and fuel-efficient at the same time. That being said, you could always churn out more power by using high-octane fuel. Hyundai Palisade proves that there is no replacement for displacement and number of cylinders as it makes the most amount of grunt with its big V6 motor

What're the 2021 Mazda CX-9's 0-60 mph Acceleration and Braking Performance?

The 2.5L turbocharged Inline-4 engine mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission is capable of catapulting the 2021 CX-9 from 0 to 60 mph in 7.1 seconds and all the way up to a speed of 130 mph. The turbocharged CX-9 never feels underpowered and delivers power comparative to a V6 engine. Even on a full load, the midsize 3-row crossover is quick off-the-line with no turbo lag.

2021 Mazda CX-9 goes from 0-60 MPH in just 7.1 Sec!

With regards to the brakes in the car, CX-9 is equipped with 12.6” vented discs at the front with 12.8” solid discs at the back. The specs also include 4-wheel 4-channel ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist.

Not one of the quickest of the bunch, the performance figures of the Mazda CX-9 is typical for your regular mid-size crossover SUV that both a family and driving enthusisats can enjoy. Nonetheless, the Mazda CX-9 is comparatively more athletic than most of its competitors, and its sporty characteristics more than makeup for it. On the downside, the CX-9 has a max towing capacity of 3,500 pounds while most rivals can tow around 5,000 pounds.

How is the Ride and Handling of the 2021 Mazda CX-9?

All Mazda cars are known to have engaging driving dynamics while still keeping the ride comfortable for the passengers. For the size of a 3-row crossover, The 2021 CX-9 is fun to drive, thanks to composed cornering and well-weighted steering. Mazda’s G-Vectoring Control Plus is behind CX-9's impressive cornering ability.

2021 Mazda CX-9 offers a comfortable ride and sharp handling!

Equipped with 4-wheel independent suspension, CX-9 absorbs the bumps comfortably while the cabin is well-insulated for any road noise to interfere. Although the turbocharged 4-cylinder engine isn't overly powerful yet it never lets the energy level go down. Of course, getting the larger 20" alloy wheels can firm the ride a bit. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available.

2021 Mazda CX-9 Fuel Economy

The 2021 CX-9 with front-wheel-drive gets an EPA Fuel Economy ratings of 22 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. Those are the best MPG numbers in the segment. With the all-wheel-drive setup, the CX-9's gas mileage drops 2 mpg. The turbocharged four-cylinder engine of the CX-9 is capable of delivering an impressive combined mileage of 24 mpg on average.

The Mazda CX-9 is definitely the winner here with the most economical mileage figures among its rivals. Honda has the largest fuel tank among the competition, still, CX-9's range of 532 miles on the highway is class-leading, thanks to the best mpg figures and a 19.0-gallon fuel tank size. among the rivals thanks to a small four-cylinder engine and a big fuel-tank capacity.

2021 Mazda CX-9 Interior

Mazda has updated the interiors of the 2021 CX-9, a three-row SUV which seats 7 comfortably. The CX-9's cabin is full of upscale materials and attention-to-details but compared with other SUVs in the segment, the SUV offers less passenger and cargo space. Mazda offers ample soft-touch plastic with handsome materials, aluminum accents, and, genuine rosewood in Signature trim. The new-for-2021 Carbon Edition adds features red leather seats and black metallic trim inside. The sporty characteristics of the car continue inside as well with a beautifully designed sporty looking interior. Overall, the interior is quite simple and elegant and also being very ergonomic at the same time.

Three-row Mazda CX-9 offers plenty of space and modern tech for all passengers!

The interior materials are quite premium for its segment and good soundproofing makes the cabin very quiet and comfortable on the road. As far as the CX-9's dimensions are concerned, upfront, the headroom, and legroom are plenty even for taller occupants, but the third-row feels cramped. Depending on the trim you choose, it could either be got as a 6-seater or a 7-seater configuration. The 6-seater option provides you with captain’s chairs in the second row.

2021 Mazda CX-9 Final Verdict

With an attractive exterior, beautifully designed premium interior, and an overall sporty and athletic characteristic, the Mazda CX-9 is a tough car to beat in the mid-size crossover SUV segment. Although it is an excellent choice for people who need 3rd-row seating in their car, the 3rd row is quite cramped in the Mazda and there are other cars out there in the market like the Hyundai Palisade and the Volkswagen Atlas that do a better job at it. Nonetheless, the long list of standard luxury and safety features makes the Mazda an excellent choice.
