The 2021 Mazda 3 is the Japanese role model when it comes to simple, beautiful, affordable, and fun mid-size sedans. With prices starting just above $20,650, the 2021 Mazda 3 still faces some tough competition from its Japanese and Korean rivals. It comes equipped with all the features one might expect, an updated infotainment screen, advanced driver assistance features, and two brand-new engine choices for 2021.

This time, the base variant of the 2021 Mazda 3 gets a 2.0-liter engine as standard, while the top models will have the option of a turbocharged 2.5L powertrain making 250 hp. "The good-looking Mazda 3 preserves the brand's fun-to-drive nature while showing up its mainstream rivals with its more upscale cabin." - Car And Driver

The Mazda 3 faces competition from many cars in this segment. Of them, the most prominent being Honda Civic, Kia Forte, and Hyundai Elantra. It seems to win as we compare the spec-sheet with more power for a lower price, but the Civic and Forte put up a fight by offering more features, better mileage, and more space inside the cabin.

Then again, the Mazda 3 sedan also has to prove itself better than its hatchback version. As we know, the sedan costs around $2,000 less than the hatchback version. Only, the Mazda 3 five-door is built on the same platform, gets just as many features, but offers a lot more practicality and usability which is missing from the four-door compact sedan.

The Mazda 3 sedan's trim levels comprise four options: Base, Select, Preferred, and Premium. The 3 sedan comes with the i-ActivSense safety features as standard in all trims, which includes Forward emergency braking, lane keeps assisting, automatic high beam headlights with adaptive cruise control. The Base trim, priced at $21,700, comes with plenty of features as standards, like an 8.8-inch infotainment unit and rain-sensing wipers. Mazda’s i-ActivSense Driver Assist now comes as standard in all trims. The Select trim comes next at $22,700 for the FWD and $24,100 for the AWD version. It gets the same 8.8” infotainment setup but with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with 18” alloy wheels as standard. It also gets dual-zone climate control along with the keyless entry.

The Mazda 3 Sedan's prices start at under $22,000

The Preferred trim lies above the Select and is priced at $24,200 for the FWD and $25,600 for the AWD. 2021 Mazda 3 Buying Advice

We will recommend the Preferred trim from the 3 Sedan's lineup because it comes with best-in-class features, luxury, driving comfort, and agility. The mileage is compromised due to increased drivability and response but still is sufficient enough to be your daily driver. The Mazda 3 has an overall score of 78 from J.D. Power reports which is quite good. Mazda’s driving experience and high resale value, along with the most powerful engine in the class, make it the top pick.

2021 Mazda 3 Engine and Performance

7.0/10

"The 2021 Mazda 3 is one of the more entertaining small sedans around. That's particularly true for this year since Mazda has introduced a new turbocharged four-cylinder engine." - edmunds.com

Mazda 3 comes with three different options under the hood for 2021. The base trim gets a new 2.0L inline-4 producing 155hp and 150lb-ft. of torque. On the Select and Preferred trims, there's the same 2.5L, 186hp inline-4 with AWD as optional. Lastly, the Premium comes up as the most powerful one, with the same 2.5L inline-4 but turbocharged motor producing 250hp and a six-speed manual unit!  The Mazda 3 does 0-60 MPH in 8.1 seconds which makes it one of the quickest of the lot.

2021 Mazda 3 will get a new turbocharged engine making 250 hp

But before you start rejoicing, the manual gearbox is limited only to the FWD variants. If you live in a place where its predictive i-Activ AWD setup would do you a lot more favors, the six-speed automatic is the only choice you'll have. Although, that should still be a good enough reason to celebrate as that turbocharged 2.5L would definitely perform and sound the best among all the variants.

The Mazda 3 wins in terms of sheer performance for the best price. Its Base trim is only a little ahead in the race but the 2.5L turbocharged Inline-4 outperforms all the other cars in the comparison by a league. The 186hp motor was already the most powerful, as it is. With two new powertrain choices in the mix, this compact sedan has only expanded its potential.

2021 Mazda 3 Fuel Economy

7.0/10

The fuel economy of a vehicle is a big factor if you’re looking for an affordable sedan. You will not be happy to know that the Mazda 3 does lack in the race in terms of mileage. As we know, more power and drivability uses more fuel, though the 3 sedan does well to offer enough fuel economy numbers in exchange. Although with the new 2.0L engine in the picture, this compact sedan will be able to improve its image as a mile-muncher.

The Mazda 3, with its ongoing 186 hp motor, gets an estimated mileage of 30 MPG in mixed driving scenarios, which is not at all lower than the estimated mileage of all the cars in the segment. Looking at the rivals, the all-new for 2021, Hyundai Elantra, provides the best-in-class range due to its extremely efficient engine. Even the Kia Forte has an equally large 14.0-gallon fuel tank but is not as efficient overall.

2021 Mazda 3 Interior

8.0/10

"The Mazda3 reaches upmarket with handsome styling and a well-appointed, if cramped, interior." - Motor Trend

The Mazda 3 sedan’s interior feels nice and welcoming. Inside, the base model gets black-clothed seats, while the other trims get leather seating in four different color choices. The door panel is also covered in leather with nice stitching details with one-touch automatic window controls. The seats are 8-way power adjusting seats with 2-way lumbar, and also feature two-person memory seating. Sadly, the choice of Bose speakers has been taken away now.

Mazda 3 dashboard

Instead, you get a power sunroof as an option, so that's that. You also get a push-button start as standard in all trims. The dashboard is covered in nice soft-touch leather-wrapped with contrast color stitching. The steering wheel is an electrically-assisted one, with manual tilt and telescoping. It is also covered with leather in a refreshed design with aluminum-finish buttons. The armrest has nice storage spaces and comes with a USB port and a 12V outlet with wireless charging as optional.

Mazda 3 sedan comes standard with an 8.8-inch infotainment display

The screen size 8.8” inch with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. You can operate it with voice commands or with the slick wheel controller near the armrest, which also comes with shortcut buttons. The gauges in the instrument clusters are digital in all trims, while you get a projection style head-up display in the top trims. Only the middle dial is digital, while the rev-counter, the temperature gauge, and the fuel gauges are analog. The knob, buttons, and switches are some of the best in the segment.

Attention to detail is the most prominent thing which makes Mazda 3 apart from its competitors. The interior space has some nice contrasting stitching, the dash design is refreshed from its previous gen, the armrest and the knee area are padded. Then again, the interior lighting has been improved over the previous models, and the CRI value is around 90% which is best in its segment. Various creature comfort features in the 2021 Mazda 3 Sedan are:

  • Start/Stop Push Button
  • 8-way driver adjustment seats
  • 60/40 foldable second-row seats
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel and seats
  • Power sliding glass moonroof
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control system

9.0/10

"The 2021 Mazda3 continues to be available as a 4-door sedan or a 5-door hatchback. Both are sleek and a testament to Mazda’s design language." - Kelley Blue Book

The Mazda 3 is a wide and low car and complementing its looks are the new led headlights and titanium mesh grill, which come standard in all trims. The sedan version of the Mazda 3 is about 8.0 inches longer than the hatchback, which makes it more sophisticated looking than its hatchback sibling. At the back, you get dual-tip exhaust outlets and LED taillights in every trim. On the turbo models, you get even bigger exhaust pipes.

The Mazda 3 Sedan has a very sedate exterior design

While only the base trim gets 16” wheels, in other models we get 18” alloy chrome wheels with 11-inch and 10.4-inch disc brakes at the front and back respectively. Its mirrors are body-colored and come with power adjusting and blind-spot monitoring along with rear cross-traffic alert as standard. They are also auto-dimming. The turbocharged 3 sedan gest black side mirrors to set it apart. The top-trim comes with a smart entry system with remote start.

Outward visibility is not on the brighter side, with the Civic and Kia offering a better view to the driver. The Mazda 3 has the biggest disadvantage with the largest curb weight and still lesser length than its competitors but offers the highest ground clearance and the longest wheelbase among the others. Honda Civic has the lowest curb weight adding to its faster accelerations and better handling. Notable exterior features of the 2021 Mazda 3 Sedan are:

  • LED headlamps and taillamps
  • LED DRLs with Auto On/Off headlamps
  • 16/18 inch aluminum-alloy wheels
  • Matte-finish front grille

2021 Mazda 3 Safety

9.9/10

The Mazda 3 excels in the safety department with a 5-star NHTSA rating and becoming the top safety pick chosen by IIHS. All the safety features now come standard in all trims which are equipped with the Mazda’s i-ActivSense Driver Assist. This is a huge leap forward.

The i-ActivSense suite of driver-assist feature is standard

Not many of its rivals are as well equipped as the 3 sedan when it comes to the safety of occupants. As we go up the trim table, Mazda also provides various active safety and driver assistance features including Active Driver Display and Adaptive Front-lighting System. Notable safety features in the 2021 Mazda 3 Sedan include:

  • Blind-spot Monitoring
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Lane Keep Assist
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Mazda Connect Emergency SOS
  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Automatic Emergency Braking

2021 Mazda 3 Competition

8.6/10

2021 Mazda 3 Vs Kia Forte

The Kia Forte wins against the Mazda 3 on some fronts. While the Kia offers better mileage and better warranty terms, Mazda offers a better driving response, more features, and much better safety.

2021 Kia Forte

Now, with two new engine choices, the 3 sedan can further dominate the Forte, be it in case of offering better mileage or more exhilarating performance. As it is, the Mazda is a lot more engaging.

2021 Mazda 3 Vs Honda Civic

When we compare the base trims of the Mazda 3 and the Honda Civic, the latter performs better in both performance and mileage. But as we move up, the Mazda 3’s Premium trim performs better than the Honda Civic Touring.

2021 Honda Civic

The Civic borrows some of its styling from its sportier sibling, the Type-R, which makes it look sleeker and better. But looks are subjective, and with a new titanium grille and redesigned rear, the low-riding Mazda 3 gives it a tough competition.

2021 Mazda 3 Final Verdict

The 2021 Mazda 3 sedan takes the legacy of the brand further with its fun to drive nature, sporty handling, well laid-out features, and nicely designed cabin. It does lack in some cases in competition with other cars, mainly as they offer better gas mileage for lesser money. Even the infotainment system on the Mazda seems rather dull and basic. The Bose upgraded speakers sounded nice but that option has been snatched away for 2021. However, the engine is the most refined and vigorous it's ever been, and the driver-assist and safety features earn the Mazda 3 a spot in your list of cars to consider in the sub-$22,000 range.

Interior can be better

Pros - Has a good amount of features, performance is decent, driving experience is good

Cons - Interior design, dashboard

Mazda 3 looks good Mazda 3 looks good, offers a decent driving experience, and has lower purchase and long-term costs. The interior design is a little poor and is missing out on some details but is not a deal-breaker in any way. The buying experience was pretty okay but the service department has been the best.

mazda 3- premium feel within budget

Pros - "beautifully crafted, premium feel inside, fun to drive"

Cons - Adaptive cruise control should have been standard

Easy to drive and well crafted interiors I was very impressed by the design of the sedan.I was opting for the hatch previously but it's rear is a big blindspot from driver's position and so I opted for the premium sedan. The interiors are rich and classy. Driving this Mazda is enjoyable. They kept me updated and were honest and patient with us. Turned out that made the buying process even more enjoyable.
