There was a time before this crossover crazy rage when compact sedans were all that was good with the Automotive sector. And one major car that was a boon to this segment was the Mazda 3 sedan, first introduced in the United States back in 2003. Since then, Mazda has been on a unique quest to combine best in class driving dynamics with best-in-class luxury. And this new 2020 Mazda 3 stands true to this quest whole-heartedly.

The much anticipated 2020 Mazda 3

Mazda's design language for the new Mazda 3 is inspiring of sorts. as it's like an animal that is about to pounce on its prey. At least that's what they want the world to know. Unlike the hot new Mazda 3 hatchback, the design language for the sedan version has more of a subtle touch to it. With its sleek design, solid bodyline and striking extents, the Mazda 3 car is a head-turner.  However, looks are not the only aspect this car excels upon. It has some strong stuff under its hood and can give you some engaging driving encounters once you get in the driver's seat.

The car is offered in four trims, Base, Select, Preferred and Premium. Adhering to the Mazda ideology, Base lends you the passage to the Flying-M wheels, whereas the Preferred and Premium, seduce you with an ultra-pleasant interior and intriguing features. Nevertheless, none of the trim levels compromise on the ride quality of the car. And as mention before, Mazda is known to strike a perfect balance between both.

From performance to looks, to comfort, this car hits all the right notes in an attempt to offer its buyer an all-around utility without compromising on the style factor, all at an affordable rate of $21,500 going up to $26,500. A small jump in price, considering what this car is capable of is no big deal. The ride inherits all the comfort traits of a family sedan while setting some cutting-edge tech and design benchmarks. The Mazda 3 Sedan takes the fight to some of the very popular wheels in the market such as the Honda Civic, Kia Forte and the Hyundai Elantra, and emerges as a respectful player of the compact sedan segment.

2020 Mazda 3 Features

7.5/10

The 2020 Mazda 3 is offered in 4 trim levels, namely- Base, Select, Preferred, and Premium. The base comes at an MSRP of $21,500, step-up to the Select variant and the MSRP leaps to $22,700. The Premium is the top variant and comes at a sticker price of $26,500. All Mazda 3 trims now get the i-Activesense Driver Assist feature as standard now. Moreover, a lot of active safety assist features have also been added as standard to make your M-wheels safer. All other trims, except for the base trim, offer AWD for an additional $1400 on top of the MSRP.

Which trim do we recommend?

The Mazda trims do not carry any engine or performance differences. Keeping this in mind, we’d recommend you go for the Premium variant. The Premium variant feels a lot more premium from the inside, courtesy to its leather-finished interiors and sport seats. This trim also offers 18-inch alloys, as compared to the Base trim’s 16-inch, thus enhancing the ride quality and the stance with which the vehicle is seen. Although it comes at a price hike of $5,000, the features provided in the Premium trim totally justify the price.

2020 Mazda 3 Engine and Performance

7.0/10

The 2020 Mazda 3 does not house any substantial powerhouse changes for the year 2020. Nevertheless, it straight up feels much more powerful than the rest of the competition. The solitary engine remains unchanged with a 2.5L naturally aspirated I4 engine, which is capable enough to generate an imposing 186 hp along with 186 lb.-ft. of torque.

2020 Mazda 3 comes with a potent SKYACTIV-G engine

These figures are the greatest in the segment, with Civic coming in right after the Mazda 3 with 174 hp. Coming to the shifting-plant, the ride appoints a 6-speed automatic transmission panel in order to rush these ponies to the front or all wheels. The top trim comes with paddle shifters. Although for manual transmission fanatics, Mazda offers an option for a 6-speed manual gearbox too, for Miata like precision.

Mazda overpowers its competition with the most amount of punch under its hood, with the Civic, not far behind. Hyundai Elantra's CVT lets it down big time with it being efficient and all but at the price of smooth shifting.

How fast is it?

The Mazda 3 should have been the fastest in this segment with its SkyActive-G engine, but when placed against competitors, that's a different story altogether. It definitely gives you a feeling of being propelled easily, although with some push though. Considering the power it churns out, the Mazda 3 really needs to buck up in order to post at least a respectable fight in terms of acceleration. Mazda 3 takes about 8.1 seconds to dash from 0-60, all the while crossing the quarter-mile mark in 16 seconds. Mazda has not opted for a turbocharged engine for the 3, and hence the power delivery feels linear, hence you'll have to lean in the throttle for better performance.

The acceleration of the 2020 Mazda 3 will leave you wanting for more.

The only ride which requires more time to cover 0-60 than the 3, is the Hyundai Elantra but considering the horsepower gap between the Mazda and the Hyundai offerings, the Mazda 3 still remains a turn-off.

The Civic being, equipped with a turbocharged unit has brought about a huge difference in its acceleration figures. Kia Forte, on the other hand, with its humble 2.0L engine backed with its Intelligent variable-speed transmission for smooth and quick shifts achieves the quickest time of the lot.

How well does it stop?

The Mazda 3 weighs the heaviest in the segment with a curb weight of 3071 lbs. Eyeing this fact, the braking performance of the Mazda 3 earns our respect. Mazda has equipped the 3 with the biggest rotor discs of the segment, and hence these provide excellent control while panic braking.

The brake rotors of the 2020 Mazda 3 are one of the largest in the segment.

The braking arrangement is smooth and does well in various braking scenarios. The ride requires 122 ft. In order to depreciate from 60-0 MPH, which indeed is a decent figure.

With 11.1-inch rotor discs in the front and 10.2-inch rotors in the back, Civic comes to a complete halt in a mere 115ft, all thanks to it weighing so light. Although, we fail to understand what went wrong with the Elantra, as even though it is fitted with average-sized rotor discs, and it being the lightest of the lot, it sure seems to take the maximum amount of distance before coming to a complete halt.

How well does it handle?

Coming to the driving part, Mazda has certainly gained a reputation for producing one of the most fun to drive cars on the planet. The 3 is much more refined than its previous iterations, probably also more than it's elder sibling, the 2020 Mazda 6. We might have criticized the ride for its laggy acceleration, but trust us, this car is nothing less than an art on wheels. The Mazda 3 hugs the road as if it owns it, and glides with refinement. No drama whatsoever!

The handling of the 2020 Mazda 3 is one of its USP.

Examining the suspension, the ride scores an “A” grade. The suspension setup of the Mazda 3 puts the setup of all other competitors to shame, swallowing almost every shock out there and inspiring confidence. Equipping the car with an AWD setup might lead to a different story altogether, as it imbibes confidence in the driver while driving through cold weathered conditions.

The steering arrangement of the 2020 Mazda 3 is the point where the praise stutters a bit. The steering for the Mazda 3 feels soft and slow at feedbacks, thus making you feel less connected to the road.

2020 Mazda 3 Fuel Economy

7.0/10

With great power (greatest in the segment at least) comes great fuel-burning tendencies, and such is the case with the Mazda 3. It is most definitely not the greenest compact car around. With a 2.5L I-4, fabricating 186 hp the ride does not really maintain the greatest of relationship with the fossil fuels. This ride posts a combined MPG figure of 27, which when compared with the competitors comes out as the lowest of the lot.

AWD versions being heavier than the FWD cars give about 25/33/28 MPG in the sedan form. In this regard, the Honda Civic surely impresses us a lot, even though it's on the heavier side of the spectrum.

2020 Mazda 3 Interior

8.0/10

Getting inside the car, you will come to notice the premium interior quality of the upscale cabin, which has not changed much since it's last refresh in the year 2019. Speaking of the cabin, you just cannot buy a more silenced and muffled cabin in this price range than that of the 2020 Mazda 3. The cabin is extremely silent and filters most of the road and wind noise, coming to the engine noise, well that’s something you’ll be the least familiar with if you drive a Mazda 3.

2020 Mazda 3 boasts one of the quietest cabins in the segment.

The Interior of the 2020 Mazda 3 Sedan, has an intriguing charm to it, with the quality knobs and buttons, creating sync with leatherette packaging all around, that further enhances the upscale feeling of the car. The interior of the Mazda 3 just does not feel like that of a bread and butter car. Seat yourself behind the steering wheel and the surroundings are bound to immerse you in the feel of a much more expensive ride.

The ride also offers a great deal of space to all its passengers. It can easily accommodate 5 people and the seats offer unmatchable comfort. The swooping roof-line, however, takes its toll on the rear headspace but overall, the ride feels comfortable even for long hours. The front seats also come with an 8-way power adjustment option for the Preferred trim and up. Ingress and egress won't be much of a hassle, because of the wide-opening doors. The Premium package also gets an option for heated seats, providing maximum comfort over long tiresome rides through the cold-forsaken terrain.

Mazda's wide stance does no good for the passengers seated in the rear, as it is pretty cramped to seat in 3 fully grown adults. However, space and utmost comfort is Hyundai's territory, and the Elantra delivers it in spades, overpowering the likes of most of the rivals.

Some of the interior features on offer are-

  • 8-way driver adjustment seats
  • 60/40 foldable rear seats
  • Leather steering wheel and seats
  • Power sliding glass moonroof
  • Front map lights and cargo are lights
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control system
  • 12-volt power outlet

What's there to keep you entertained?

This 2020 version is just one year off from a full redesign. The center console is filled with premium piano black shade stitching. All the trims of the Mazda 3 Sedan come fitted with an 8.8-inch focal touchscreen infotainment panel which features crisp graphics and an easy to use interface. The infotainment’s main menu is thoughtfully designed and is particularly great at feedbacks. One slight setback with this generation of Mazda 3, is that the infotainment screen is not touch or gesture operated, rather all the functions can be manually controlled through the knob down below.

The rotary knob that is used to access the infotainment screen

One major change of sight in the car is the metal grille for the speakers which is definitely a lot more premium-looking than what you'd expect in this class. It is unique for a budget-sedan. Entertainment being a crucial trait in the present day and age, the company offers an optional 10-speaker Bose Sound system which is powerful and ultra-immersive, however, the standard 6-speaker system does not feel tasteless either. There is also a head-up display option, which comes with the Premium package. Some of the many infotainment features on the 2020 Mazda 3 are.

How much cargo can it carry?

It may feel like an underperforming car when one sees its cargo volume with rear seats up, as it offers a below-par 13.2cu.ft of cargo space. Fold those seats down in a 60/40 fashion and the 2020 Mazda 3 Sedan simply turns the tables around. On the inside too, you have a very nicely sized storage compartment bang in the middle.

2020 Mazda 3 offers the greatest in class cargo volume

There is plenty of storage up front, with a hidden storage compartment beneath the console and cupholders for every passenger just to mention a few. Loading and unloading luggage into the cargo space is fairly easy too.

2020 Mazda 3 Exterior

9.0/10

Before we begin, let's just get one thing perfectly clear. Mazda cannot go wrong with its design language, and the Mazda 3 sedan achieving the award for 2020's World Car Design of the Year is a true testament to that fact. Kia is really showing strides in this area as Mazda 3 follows in the footsteps of Mazda MX-5 winning the award in 2016. Kicking things off on the outside, this new generation Mazda 3 is one hell of a looker, and being a budget-friendly car, boasts the ultimate power to make heads turn. Mazda's new design language, known as KODO follows the less is better ideology. and this has done wonders for them. The Mazda 3 is a pretty stooped down car with a wide stance, especially in the front area. One of the best things about the car is that no matter which trim, they'd all get LED lights. The design of the 2020 Mazda 3 is well-thought-out and carries a smooth flowing side body design with each panel infusing just right into the next one. A nicely sculpted dipping nose, and an extended trunk complete the car’s look.

The exterior shell of the 2020 Mazda 3 is minimal yet elegant.

As far as the rest of the styling cues go, the sedan version is almost 8-inches longer than the Mazda 3 hatchback, which makes this car a more sophisticated version of the sporty-looking hatchback. The Mazda 3 leads the league in terms of ground clearance, which lends this ride an ideal sedan profile. The twin-outlet exhaust looks fantastic as well as sounds incredibly good.

Overall, Mazda has set a new benchmark for premium design language in this segment. Now it's up to the rest of the manufactures to follow suit. The longest wheelbase of the bunch does translate to better passenger space in the rear seats. The rest of the competition is not far behind though. Kia Forte's curb weight being on the lighter side of the spectrum, helps it to come to achieve the segment-best stopping distance.

Highlights of the exterior design

Some of the prominent exterior features of the 2020 Mazda 3 Sedan are:

  • 18-inch alloy wheels
  • Self-leveling LED headlamps
  • Keyless entry
  • Power sunroof
  • Black metallic finish front grille
  • Roof-mounted shark-fin antenna

2020 Mazda 3 Safety

9.9/10

Arguably one of the most important advancements for the year 2020, were made in the field of safety. The 2020 Mazda 3 offers a loaded suite of active safety features, including the i-safety sense package, which earlier was optional but now has been made a standard across all the trims, even for the base model. Mazda 3 vs Honda Civic Ex-L

The Honda Civic might be the best but definitely the priciest option of the segment, with a sticker price of $24,337. The ride houses a 1.5L turbocharged I4 unit, which can fabricate 174 hp along with 162 lb.ft. of torque. The ride can accomplish the 0-60 sprint in 7.5 seconds, which is the second-fastest figure of the lot. However, the Civic emerges as the undisputed king of the fuel economy arena, with a combined MPG figure of 36.  It is a great driving car and can account for equally good amounts of practicality as well. Although with a much more refined engine in the Mazda backed with the minimalistic yet great looking interior, our choice would be the 3.

Mazda 3 vs Hyundai Elantra ECO DCT

Priced at $21,050, the Hyundai Elantra is the most reasonable offering in the class. The ride gets a 2.0L I4 under its hood, which can generate 128 hp along with 156 lb.-ft. of torque, which is the lowest among all its rivals. It also is the only one in terms of looks that gives the Mazda 3 a run for its money. It also matches the driving dynamics of 3 to an extent. the Hyundai also has a great looking interior packed with enough bells and whistles, so much so that the Mazda falls short in this department to the Elantra.

2020 Mazda 3 Final Verdict

The 2020 Mazda 3 is an extraordinary deal in the budget vehicle section. It is a seriously good package, if not the best. Offered in two body styles and four trims with discretionary bundles of creature comforts, Mazda gives a ton of varieties to browse. However, it falls behind in certain regions, for example, cargo volume and fuel efficiency, however, these drawbacks can be overlooked thinking about its benefits. To sum up, then, Mazda has done its bit to bring in customers running to the showroom to buy the 3. For the price-tag of $22,700, the Mazda 3 is value for money in all its senses.

In winters, it easily drives and sustains on the road by using the AWD option. Right when all wheels come to life thereby improving traction, driving in snow gets a lot better.
