Helping the Maserati Levante Trofeo accelerate like a performance car is a twin-turbo V8 that makes 590 hp and 538 lb.-ft. torque. However, that is no ordinary engine. That twin-turbo V8 has been supplied to Maserati by Ferrari, which is reason alone to get yourself this Maserati. Though when you do, reality will set in.

For a price of $171,500, the Maserati Levante Trofeo isn’t just the most premium of all Levantes, but is also more expensive than the Porsche Cayenne Turbo and Bentley Bentayga. Now, both those SUVs deliver almost similar level of performance like the Trofeo, but at the same time offer a much higher sense of practicality.

The side profile of this Levante is sharp and aerodynamic for form as well as function. While larger 22-inch wheels occupy smoothly rounded fenders, the sculps on the door hide the Trofeo’s bulk. It isn’t everyday that a Bentley comes out as the cheaper one in a comparison, but in this case it does. The Levante Trofeo is about $3,000 more expensive than the Bentayga. Adding insult to injury is the level of luxury on the inside of the Bentayga. Turns out the Levante Trofeo might be a more worthy Levante but isn’t a worthy SUV.

But when you start to look closer, this Maserati starts to disappoint, and the level of disappointment keeps growing. Besides a powerful V8 provided by Ferrari, the Levante V8 hardly has anything to offer that makes it praiseworthy. Several other SUVs out there perform just as well as the Trofeo, if not better, without disappointing on the other aspects of being a comfortable SUV.
