When a company known for its upmarket and sporty coupes and sedans decides to offer a comfortable utility vehicle that shares the same basic qualities of those smaller cars, what you get is the Levante GTS. But this luxury SUV from Maserati might not be caught in a crossfire like the Trofeo.

Overall Rating

Though the GTS derives power from the same twin-turbo V8 that powers the Trofeo, at 550 hp, the GTS is less powerful. But then it gets the same handling characteristics as the Trofeo so its more manageable. Also, it ups the game with a lot more standard features while at the same time costing less than the same.

Starting at a price of $120,980, the GTS makes a strong case for itself against the Porsche Cayenne Turbo and supercharged Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR. However, the GTS is closer to the BMW X6 M in terms of styling and performance, but far behind all the three in practicality.

2020 Maserati Levante GTS SUV Features

9.0/10

In a lineup where the standard Levante and Levante S models source power from a V6 engine, the GTS boasts a bigger, more powerful V8 borrowed from Ferrari. Unlike the Trofeo, however, which is also powered by the same twin-turbo V8, the GTS’s V8 churns 40 hp less. Amongst other mechanical features a ZF eight-speed automatic and Q4 intelligent all-wheel drive are also common features on the Levante GTS.

What makes this Levante stand out though are the several GTS-specific features. While a dual-pane sunroof, heated seats all around and a laminated rear privacy glass make the GTS feel more upmarket, the Active Torque Control feature compliments its performance heritage. So for a price of $120,980, the GTS is a V8 powered, luxury SUV which aims to indulge and excite you.

2020 Maserati Levante GTS SUV Engine and Performance

9.0/10

The Maserati Levante GTS, like its Trofeo sibling, is powered by a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8. This engine pushes out 550 hp and 538 lb.-ft. torque. A ZF eight-speed automatic transmission sends power from the engine to all four corners of this Maserati.

Rated at 575 hp, the Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR’s 5.0-liter V8 is the most powerful in this lineup of luxury SUVs.

How fast is the Maserati Levante GTS?

At over 4,700 pounds, the Maserati Levante GTS is not a lightweight. However, that doesn’t seem to affect this Levante. The cross-plane crankshaft V8 of the Levante GTS returns impressive power delivery and throttle response as along with new software mapping, the Ferrari V8 gets different camshafts, valves, cylinder heads, conrods and pistons.

2020 Maserati Levante GTS 0-60 MPH in just 4.1 sec

When getting off from a standstill, the intelligent all-wheel-drive system sends almost all of the engine’s torque to the rear wheels. At the same time, the eight-speed ZF automatic shifts relentlessly to ensure power is plenty at all times. Consequently, the Levante GTS is pretty fast for an SUV, even a V8 powered one.

The torquey motor of the Porsche Cayenne Turbo delivers peak low-end torque, which helps it best all other V8 powered SUVs.

What about the braking performance of the Maserati Levante GTS?

Braking on the 2020 Maserati Levante GTS is taken care of by brakes from Brembo. At the front are six-piston calipers ventilated discs, while those discs at the back get single-piston floating calipers.

The brakes do a decent job of shedding this SUV’s speed, but feel from the pedal and response from the rotors is not in line. As you begin to bear down on the pedal, there’s hardly any response. It is only towards the end of pedal travel that the brakes start to bite.

Even though the Maserati Levante GTS is the lightest SUV in this segment, it is second to the Porsche Cayenne Turbo when coming to a halt from 60 mph.

What about its driving dynamics?

As an everyday drive, the Maserati Levante GTS delivers a fair degree of sophistication. The eight-speed automatic does an excellent job of keeping the engine from revving over 3000 rpm. But push the throttle beyond that and this Levante develops into a vibrant hauler. The only downside being its stiffer suspension which can cause some discomfort for passengers over roads that aren’t as smooth.

2020 Maserati Levante GTS Front View

But that translates to contained body roll during cornering. While the limited-slip differential can restrict up to half of the engine's torque sent to the front wheels, the torque vectoring function applies brakes to all the wheels individually in order to prevent the Levante GTS from sliding sideways. That way this Maserati is closer to a sports car than it is to an SUV. Also the Skyhook performance suspension and Maserati Stability Program with IVC make this SUV an exceptional off-roader.

2020 Maserati Levante GTS SUV Fuel Economy

6.0/10

The Maserati Levante GTS’s EPA ratings prove that this Maserati is most definitely a V8 powered SUV. However, under normal driving scenario, the intelligent all-wheel drive system of this Levante sends all of the engine’s power only to the wheels at the back. This helps by preventing it from being too extravagant. Furthermore, the aerodynamic design of the Levante GTS also helps with improving efficiency.

The Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR’s fuel efficient engine is further aided by its large 27.6 gallon fuel tank. Thereby it offers the most range in this segment.

2020 Maserati Levante GTS SUV Interior

8.0/10

For a luxury, Italian SUV, the Maserati Levante GTS is neither that luxurious nor is it that Italian. The piano black composite trim feels rather generic. At the same time, the Maserati Touch Control bears a striking resemblance to FCA’s UConnect. However, the supple, Italian leather seats help this Maserati save face.

2020 Maserati Levante GTS Front Seats

They offer decent support despite being soft. But also disappointing is the availability of room on the inside. While the front row is adequately accommodating, the second row suffers due to the Levante GTS’s rounded roofline. Overall, the only thing impresses about this Maserati’s cabin is the level of insulation. The front laminated glass keeps most outside noises at bay.

What about utility?

The Maserati Levante GTS might not be as luxurious for a luxury SUV, but it is an SUV afterall. Its longer wheelbase improves practicality. Even though its rounded roofline takes away some of the usability, this Levante manages to free up a decent amount of space on the inside.

Think all Levante models are equally good to look at? Well, the GTS just simply stands out. On either side of the Maserati Trident on the blacked out grille, lie full LED adaptive headlights. Atop those headlights, a sculpted aluminum hood with dual vents improves airflow to the twin-turbo V8.

The side profile of this Levante is sharp and aerodynamic for form as well as function. While 20-inch wheels occupy smoothly rounded fenders, the sculps on the door hide its overall heft. You could mistake the GTS for the Trofeo, but in order to make sure you don’t, the C-pillar of the Maserati Levante Trofeo sports a Saetta logo in chrome trim.

Also in chrome are the Levante GTS's twin dual-pipe exhaust tips that deliver this Levante’s wonderful exhaust note. The aerodynamic design carries over all the way to the back too, whera a sporty body-colored spoiler and LED taillights bring together the entire design.

Maserati Levante GTS vs. Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR

The Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR not only gets a bigger 5.0-liter supercharged engine as compared to the Levante GTS’s turbocharged 3.8-liter, it is more practical than the same. At a price of $114.500, the less expensive Range Rover Sport offers a bigger cabin and boot, and also higher fuel efficiency and better off-roading prowess. The Maserati Levante GTS on the other hand offers a bit more performance.

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR

Maserati Levante GTS vs. Porsche Cayenne Turbo

The Maserati Levante GTS is the better of most Levantes, but it isn’t close to being the best amongst other V8 driven SUVs. The Porsche Cayenne Turbo not only is cheaper than the Levante GTS, it is also the better performing SUV of the two. Besides that, the Cayenne Turbo offers higher practicality with its more fuel efficient engine and bigger boot. Overall, the Levante Trofeo is no match to the Porsche Cayenne Turbo.

2020 Maserati Levante GTS SUV Final Verdict

7.9/10

In the crowded world of V8 powered luxury SUVs, the Maserati Levante GTS manages to stand out courtesy its wonderful design and loads of standard features. But that’s about it for this Maserati. When you start to look closer, this SUV does start to disappoint. Several other SUVs out there do what the Levante Trofeo does without compromising on the other aspects of being a comfortable and practical SUV.
