2020 Maserati Ghibli S Sedan Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Italians have a long-standing relationship with exoticism. All of the things made by them have a tendency of massaging the finest of your buds and senses, be it the food, the colognes, or the cars. One such exemplary example of this is the Maserati Ghibli S. Nothing speaks like hot Italian design like a car that is named after a North African wind. It is not as tech-savvy and luxurious as its German competitors, yet the roar as you press down on the throttle lets you know everything you need about the attitude of this car.

Overall Rating

The Ghibli S is the performance model of the Ghibli, which is a mid-size luxury sedan from the Italian manufacturer. This magnificent Maserati is a leap over the standard Ghibli with a bump in power figures. That means it is now even more intense to drive at your occasional pleasure excursion. With a Ferrari-sourced twin-turbo V6 engine and Chrysler's ZF automatic gearbox, it is more efficient as well.

Though the Maserati carries a legacy of several decades and has been one of the epitomes of a great car, it has witnessed harsh criticism in recent times for its average interior and technology, which do not justify the car’s price tag. In 2020 the Maserati Ghibli S goes up against arch-rivals such as the BMW M550i, the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, and the Lexus LS 500. So will the Ghibli S be able to mark its reign in 2020? Scroll down to find out.

2020 Maserati Ghibli S Sedan Features

9.0/10

The 2020 Maserati Ghibli S is on offer in 3 trims and 2 drivetrains. While the Ghibli S represents the car in its basic avatar, the Ghibli S GranLusso, and the Ghibli S GranSport add fine touches of luxury or sportiness. Mechanically, all 3 trims are absolutely the same, with a 3.0L Twin Turbo V6 engine doing the job from under the hood. The Ghibli S GranLusso translates to grand-luxury, with a special package of equipment that enhances the car’s timeless appeal.

The GranSport, as the name suggests, adds more exhilaration to the ride, with features such as leather sport steering wheel and sport seats, paddle shifters, and performance suspension with electronic damping. Even the color cues give off hints that separate it from the rest of the pack. Chrysler's say in the company shows a bit of index with the reskinned infotainment system and cheap materials here and there, but it is nothing that would bother long-term when you realize what the Ghibli S is capable off.

What would we recommend?

It would be great to go for the GranLusso trim as the model takes home the signature sporty looks of Maserati and also stuffs in some great features such as performance suspension, electronic damping, column-mounted paddle shifters, and much more that make it well worth the price tag.

2020 Maserati Ghibli S Sedan Engine and Performance

8.0/10

The Maserati Ghibli S, under its curvaceous hood, houses a 3.0L V6 engine, which is paired with a set of high-performance turbochargers. This configuration helps the car belt out 424 hp and 428 lb.-ft. of torque, which enters the picture pretty early with peak torque kicking in at 2250 rpm. The S model, which is the Ghibli’s performance variant’s power is a big leap over the standard model’s 345 hp.

2020 Maserati Ghibli S Sedan has 8 Speed Automatic Transmission

All the Maserati Ghibli models get an 8-speed shiftable automatic ZF transmission. The panel performs well and is always ready to juggle some gears. The shifting is pretty precise in the automatic mode, with smooth rev-matched downshifts. Moreover, the exhaust note is simply breathtaking, especially when you take this beast out on a track to experience its full potential.

The Maserati Ghibli holds a handsome set of power figures, but when placed shoulder to shoulder against the competition, those figures start looking a bit docile. The BMW 5-series M550i comes out as the most powerful car with 523 ponies and 553 lb.-ft. Of torque. The Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, making a chase, rakes in the second spot with 505 hp, followed by the Ghibli and finally the Lexus LS 500.

How fast is the Maserati Ghibli S?

The brawny V6 inside the Maserati Ghibli S surely does the spark but is not able to light up the sky as other cars of this competition hold the capabilities to do. It is fast on the throttle and tingles the senses with its thrust. You can realize that the car can easily overtake high-speed traffic. Nevertheless, you may do well to keep the show and tell on the low if you don't mind embarrassing yourself.

2020 Maserati Ghibli S Sedan hits 0-60 in just 5 sec

The Maserati Ghibli does the 0-60 dash in 4.9 seconds and clocks a time of 12.8 seconds to cover the quarter of a mile distance. Though this figure seems fine to disgrace other low-end cars on the freeway, when the contenders such as the Bimmer and the Giulia make the heroic-entry, the Maserati Ghibli S is bound to enjoy a scenic view of their tail lamps.

If you want an Italian sports sedan that is actually fast enough to challenge a Ferrari, you are much better off with the Giulia. The BMW 5-series is another alternative that feels like a much more civilized option, even though it has the biggest engine in the class. The Lexus LS 500 is close to matching the performance of the Ghibli, despite being the heaviest car in the segment.

What about the braking performance of the Maserati Ghibli S?

The Maserati Ghibli’s halting prowess is on par with the ride’s sprinting capabilities. Though the Ghibli’s exact 60-0 figures are not confirmed, there is the brake-fade factor that is getting framed. Apart from this, the car also takes a long time to decelerate under wet conditions.

Apart from this, the pedal is weighted just right. The Maserati Ghibli feels fine to modulate under city traffic conditions. It does not take a toll on your foot after a long drive and you can easily take it out on the canyons without a second thought.

Maserati stuck to the basics with the Ghibli's braking system, which is something most other manufacturers have moved way ahead of. A BMW 5-series, for example, comes with some high-tech features like brake drying and dynamic traction control. That may not matter to the sentimentalist who thinks that it takes away from the purity of the experience, but the reality is advanced systems are kind of commonplace. Even the Lexus LS 500 comes with adaptive braking as standard.

What about its driving dynamics?

The Maserati might not have built a hyper-active car in the form of the Ghibli, but what they have surely built is a car that handles with utmost confidence and exhibits great athleticism. A major portion of the credit for this nimbleness goes to the 50 percent front, 50 percent rear weight distribution, and a 0.31 drag coefficient. The Ghibli gives you confidence that you can take the Ferrari-sourced V6 drivetrain to its full potential without letting the car out of control.

2020 Maserati Ghibli S Sedan has an exponential amount of grip.

The handling of the Ghibli S can be best explained in three words- precise, agile, and well balanced. Every movement of the Ghibli S is highly controlled, accurate, and linear. The ride tackles curves and corners with grace and there is an exponential amount of grip. In case you go for the GranLusso trim, you get blessed with Skyhook performance suspension with electronic damping, which further enhances the ride’s performance and handling capabilities.

2020 Maserati Ghibli S Sedan Fuel Economy

7.0/10

The 6-pot powerhouse inside the Maserati Ghibli S lends it the power to stand in this ring with some of the greatly-established German rivals, it also grants the Ghibli some fine mpg figures. The Maserati Ghibli S can go a distance of 16 city miles or roar for 24 miles, when on a highway, for every gallon of gasoline you box into it. To sum it up, this Maserati holds to the Italian design of "show, don't tell". However, it is well worth considering that its German competitors manage a much better fuel economy.

For all it's worth, the Maserati Ghibli is not the car you should consider if you care about polar ice caps or saving on your monthly gas credit. This is a gas-guzzler in every sense of the tern. The large gas tank grants it the ability to cruise the majority of Alpine resorts without hassle. Still, the Bimmer or the Lexus will save you a lot between refills. Even the Giulia gets some points in providing a good driving range for its bit of fuel if you don't mind the rougher driving experience.

2020 Maserati Ghibli S Sedan Interior

7.0/10

While the Maserati’s appeal is top-notch from the outside, the interior feels a bit tasteless and is far from resembling the interior of a car that costs more than $75,000. Part of the blame goes to Chrysler's share of things. Some plastic bits in the console and behind the shift paddles are sure to stand out as you venture out for a few hours. The Ghibli at least stands apart from the likes of the 300C with the inclusion of some premium upholstery materials.

2020 Maserati Ghibli S Sedan Front Seats

The cabin design is sound but a bit too basic and is accompanied by some glitches that you’d not expect even in a bread and butter car. For instance, the left-side shifting paddle obstructs the turn-signal stalk feature. Apart from these glitches, the rest of the interior is quite up to the mark. Plenty of wiggle room is present, both for the front and the back passengers. Dual-zone climate control is standard, as are the power-adjustable foot pedals and the rear sun blinder.

As for its rivals, the Maserati Ghibli falls just about average for interior space. The BMW 5-series is the clear winner here, thanks to its cutting-edge technology and more plush insides that inhabit the car's cabin. The Lexus LS has plenty of space as well. It may not get premium materials as standard but has been improving on the technological front. The Alfa Romeo Giulia may be the direct comparison, yet its orthodox approach is its undoing. It allows the Ghibli to gain an edge with its improved superior technological prowess.

Does it come loaded with tech inside?

2020 Maserati Ghibli S Sedan Infotainment Screen

The Maserati Ghibli S features a toned-up version of the Dodge Charger’s UConnect infotainment system. All the information is projected on an 8.4-inch touch screen panel, with the system now tuned to a swifter touch response. Some of the other infotainment features of the Maserati Ghibli S are:

  • SiriusXM AM/FM/HD/Satellite with seek-scan
  • Steering-wheel mounted audio controls
  • Real-time weather display
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Speed sensitive volume
  • Wireless phone connectivity
  • 280W amplifier
  • Uconnect Navigation system

What creature comforts does the Maserati Ghibli S offer?

The Maserati Ghibli S may not be an absolute marvel on the inside, yet it packs several convenience features that make your rides enthralling yet leisurely. Some of the most prominent convenience features on-board the Ghibli S are:

  • Proximity keyfob sensor
  • Power cargo access remote release
  • Keyfob trunk/hatch/door release
  • Heated sport steering wheel with power tilting, power telescoping
  • Sunroof/convertible roof FOB controls
  • Illuminated passenger vanity mirror
  • Memory seats
  • Steering wheel memory
  • Automatic temperature control

What about utility?

The Maserati Ghibli S is a car that can sprint like a bolt through the freeways, but performance is not its only forte. The Maserati Ghibli S can do family roles like a pro as well. This Italian sedan does well on the utilitarian aspect with great interior space and likewise cargo space as well.

The Maserati Ghibli S offers 17.7 cubic feet of cargo space, which is a great figure when seen from the segment standards. Only one car surpasses the Ghibli in terms of cargo capacity and that is the BMW 5-series M550i.

The designers in Italy have done a fine job here and the level of their fineness is portrayed in every angle, line, and curve of the Ghibli. You may find this sedan one of the most gorgeous-looking four-door vehicles in existence. That is not completely out of character for a car designed by Marco Tencone, whose previous works include the likes of Quattroporte and the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider.

2020 Maserati Ghibli S Sedan 3 Quarter View

The Ghibli’s design language is of a typical sports coupe but in a 4-door iteration. The car looks equally aggressive yet classy from every angle. The front end of the car is pulled forward and gets a 10-slot grille. Behind the grille is an elliptical hood that takes the aggressiveness to the side doors with bold and defined creases. The side vents on the front fenders give a sporty look, which is finally completed by the chrome exhaust tips.

Maserati Ghibli S vs. Alfa Romeo Giulia Quarifoglio

The Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio is one of the most potent offerings of this segment. The Alfa Romei Giulia, in its Quadrifoglio version, houses a 2.9L Twin-turbo V6 engine, which belts out 505 hp and 443 lb.-ft. Of torque. This set of power figures, when combined with a super-light body, makes the Giulia Quadrifoglio the fastest car of this segment. The Giulia Quarifoglio does the 0-60 sprint in 3.8 seconds. The Giulia Quadrifoglio is a proper sports sedan, that can take your breath away with its hyper-performance. However, the area where the Giulia takes a beating is utility.

2020 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quarifoglio

Maserati Ghibli vs. Bmw 5-series M550i xDrive

The BMW M550i is one of the most well-rounded packages that this segment has to offer. At a price of $77,645, the M550i is a car that offers great performance, in an opulent package of fine interiors, and tops it all with great utility prospect. The M550i houses a 4.4L turbocharged V8 engine, the only V8 in question. This biggest engine churns out the most power with 523 ponies and 553 lb.-ft. of torque. The M550i performs way better than the Maserati Ghibli S as well, with a 0-60 sprint time of 3.9 seconds.

2020 Maserati Ghibli S Sedan Final Verdict

7.2/10

The Maserati Ghibli S is a great car that keeps the marque’s legacy proud and upright. However, there are some shortcomings in this car, such as the interior and the performance which do not match the level of some competitors. Overall, the Ghibli S is a car that makes it through with its chiseled looks and the classic Italian taste.
