2020 Maserati Ghibli Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Updated on: August 6, 2020

The Maserati Ghibli is a mid-size luxury sedan from the Italian manufacturer. The Ghibli has been around for a while now but still finds it difficult to plant a firm foot in the market. That comes as quite a surprise when you consider that underneath it is basically a Ferrari. The sleek looks further add to the overall character of the car. That smooth styling of the front grille retains the look all the way back to the chrome exhaust tips. With a few minor upgrades for 2020, it might be interesting to see what the Ghibli has up its sleeves.

Starting at a shade under $70,000, the Ghibli isn’t exactly cheap either. And this price is is persistent after the drop Maserati has planned for the 2020 model year. With a 3-liter twin-turbocharged V6, the Ghibli plans on taking on the Audi A7 and the Mercedes CLS- two vehicles that have already established their foot in the market. Although the car has so far displayed the "all show, no go" trademark against its German competitors, let's see if that changes this way around.

The Granlusso trim is the one to go for. It offers plenty of features at a very attractive price. There are also paid options on offer to make your Ghibli even more exclusive.

2020 Maserati Ghibli Engine and Performance

8.0/10

The Maserati Ghibli is powered by a 3-liter twin-turbocharged V6. The engine is mated an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The powertrain is capable of producing 345 horses and 369 lb-ft of torque. The maximum power is achieved at 5500RPM whereas the peak torque kicks in at 1750. The wide powerband makes it easy to drive at slow city speeds and highway speeds as well.

In terms of power delivery, the engine feels fairly relaxed throughout the rev-range. There is enough torque on demand which makes it pretty easy to overtake on both city streets and on highways. The gearshifts are somewhat smooth but the competition offers better.

When it comes to displacement, all of these cars are powered by 3-liter, 6-cylinder turbocharged motors. The engine configurations are different though, while the Ghibli and the A7 are equipped with “V” engine, the Merc is powered by an “inline” engine. If you care about outright power figures, the Mercedes Benz CLS 450 has the most power with 362 horses. Then comes the Ghibli and then the A7 with 335 hp. In terms of torque, all three of the vehicles are at par with 369 lb-ft of torque.

How fast is the Maserati Ghibli?

If you want to run your Ghibli down the drag strip or off a traffic light, you’ll be pleased to know that it can do the 0-60 sprint in 5.5 seconds and the quarter-mile is covered in 13.4 seconds. This goes on to show us that it doesn’t matter which segment of cars you are interested in, performance is an added bonus. Even though the Ghibli is not lightning quick, it can be considered as fast.

The Mercedes CLS 450 is the quickest in this bunch with a 0-60 timing of 5.1 seconds. Then comes in the Audi A7 with a 0-60 sprint timing of 5.2 seconds. These numbers might feel redundant to some for these vehicles. But for the ones who do care, they feel pretty evenly matched.

Quarter mile timings of these vehicles are also quite average with the Audi being the fastest at 13.3 seconds. Then comes in the Maserati at 13.4 seconds- just one-tenth of a second slower than the Audi.

What about the braking performance of the Maserati Ghibli?

Brakes are one of the most important components of a vehicle. Your car is only as fast as you can stop it. The Ghibli is equipped with 13.6-inch rotors in the front and 13.0-inch rotors in the rear. The Ghibli is also lighter than the competition that helps in improving the braking performance. The front brakes have a 4 piston setup.

The Merc has the largest brake rotors in the bunch with 14.2-inch units in the front and 14.2-inch units in the back as well. The Ghibli comes in second with 13.6-inch rotors in the front and 13-inch units in the rear. The A7 has the smallest brakes in the competition with 13.3-inch units in the front and 13-inch ones in the rear.

As far as braking performance is concerned, the A7 takes 157 feet to come to a stop from 70 miles an hour and the CLS takes 167 feet to do the same. The exact braking figures of the Maserati Ghibli are not available. Having said that, it is expected to be on par with the competition.

How is the Maserati Ghibli to drive?

The Maserati Ghibli offers a limited amount of fun. Yes, the car feels powerful and quick on its feet. The engine is peppy and quick. The engine feels fairly relaxed on the highways and doesn’t make any fuss even at higher speeds. In terms of driving dynamics, the Ghibli feels well balanced and sorted.

2020 Maserati Ghibli Sedan Front View

As for day to day driving, the Ghibli feels pretty comfortable and relaxed. The vehicle offers a decent level of sound deadening. Road noises are audible but not to a level where it would interfere with your comfort. But somehow you decide to track your Maserati Ghibli, it might feel a little out of place and out of breath. Having said that, the noises it makes are just amazing.

2020 Maserati Ghibli Fuel Economy

7.0/10

When we talk about mid-size sedans, fuel economy is one of the biggest priorities. The 3-liter twin-turbocharged V6 manages to return a below-average figure of 17/24/19 for city/highway/combined respectively. This number is subpar especially when you take into consideration the fact that the Ghibli has a twin-turbo setup which is supposed to help in increasing the fuel economy.

In this comparison, the Mercedes CLS 450 is the most fuel-efficient. It returns a gas mileage of 23/30/26 for city/highway/combined respectively. Then comes the Audi A7 which returns 22/29/25 which is still better when compared to the Ghibli. As far as range is concerned, the Mercedes also has the largest fuel tank and the longest range. The Audi also performs decently in this segment.

2020 Maserati Ghibli Interior

7.0/10

The Maserati Ghibli can seat a maximum of 5 passengers. The front seats offer plenty of room and support to the passengers. The bolstering is there but it is on the positive side. It feels comfortable but at the same time manages to hold you in place through long sweeping turns..

As far as rear seats are concerned, the Ghibli offers plenty of room at least. The same cannot of said about the quality of materials. Most of the cabin is filled with cheap scratchy plastic and some of the buttons and switches feel like they have been borrowed from cheaper Chrysler models.

All three vehicles in this comparison offer a similar amount of space to the passengers. As far as exact numbers are concerned, the Maserati offers the most space by a small margin. In terms of interior quality, the CLS offers better materials. Most of the surfaces where you would put your hands are made of soft-touch materials.

Does the Maserati Ghibli come loaded with tech inside?

The Maserati Ghibli is fitted with a premium MTC+( Maserati Touch Control Plus) infotainment system. The infotainment is situated on the dashboard in such a way that it becomes the center of attraction. The system is equipped with a responsive and vibrant 8.4-inch touchscreen that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The car is also equipped with a WiFi hotspot that can be used to browse the internet on your phone. The infotainment system is quick and easy to use. The infotainment screen is also vibrant and sharp.

The infotainment system is accompanied by a Bowers and Wilkins surround sound system. The top trim of the Ghibli is equipped with 15 speakers, and a subwoofer that is lined with kevlar. In terms of sound quality, the Ghibli is better than its German rivals.

What are the creature comforts on offer in the Maserati Ghibli?

  • 60/40 folding rear seat
  • Auto-dimming interior rearview mirror including Automatic High Beam Assist
  • Trident logo embossed on front and rear headrests
  • Heated Black Leather Sport Steering Wheel
  • Front tunnel and door inserts
  • Two open cup holders and lighter

What about the Maserati Ghibli’s utility?

Cargo practicality is something that is expected from a mid-size sedan. It should be able to carry a family’s luggage for an outstation trip. With the increase in the demand for SUVs and crossovers, the sedans have taken a backseat in terms of practicality.

The Audi A7 offers the most amount of cargo space and that too by some margin. It offers a mind-blowing 24.9 cubic feet of cargo space. Then comes Ghibli with 17.7 cubic feet and then the CLS with 11.9 cubic feet. The sloping roofline design definitely eats up into the boot space.

One thing that the Maserati is good at is the “looks” part. It looks pretty good from every corner. From the bold creases along the side of the Ghibli to the aggressive exhaust tips in the back, the Ghibli looks pretty good. The side vents on the front fenders give a sporty look to the Ghibli while retaining the classy Italian looks.

In terms of dimensions, the Ghibli is pretty standard. At 195.7 inches in length, it is at par with the competition. Even when it comes to the width of the vehicle, at 76.6 inches, the Ghibli is nothing special. However, it offers 4.5 inches of ground clearance which makes it pretty easy to drive in towns. It can also tackle driveways with ease.

All three of these vehicles are evenly matched in terms of exterior dimensions. There is not a lot that can separate them in these terms. The CLS offers the least amount of ground clearance at just 3.9 inches. The low ground clearance definitely makes the vehicle look very sleek but at the same time, it also hinders on the practicality front.

Maserati Ghibli Vs Audi A7

The Audi A7 has recently received an update which makes it armed to the tooth safety and tech. On the other hand, the Ghibli feels like a dinosaur- struggling to move. It has been in the need of an update since the day it came out. The Ghibli stands no chance against the modern-day A7.

2020 Audi A7

Maserati Ghibli Vs Mercedes Benz CLS

Yes, the CLS is an old model but Mercedes has made sure that it received all the necessary updates on time. It still offers the best in terms of quality, comfort, performance, and technology. In addition to that, the CLS also looks pretty good and expensive.

2020 Maserati Ghibli Final Verdict

7.5/10

The Maserati Ghibli offers a good amount of safety, comfort, and performance. The one area where the Ghibli falls behind is the build quality. The interior feels and lacks quality. There is not a lot that can be said about the Ghibli as an overall package- it just lacks the charm of an Italian sedan with 300 horses under the hood.
