2020 Lincoln Continental Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Updated on: June 8, 2020

Automotive Journalist

The Continental has been the torch-bearer of Lincoln’s elegance and premium craftsmanship since decades now. With its distinct American flavor, and fine blend of several elements, the Continental has been alluring enough to drive masses to Lincoln dealerships. The 2020 Lincoln Continental which is a part of its tenth generation, still presents a lucrative offer to many but not all for sure.

Over the years, the flagship American saloon has undergone several makeovers and entered its tenth generation in 2017. Since then the Continental has remained mostly the same, let alone some minor updates in the following model years. The 2020 Lincoln Continental too, doesn't add any fresh cuisine to the table apart from some new optional packages

The Continental truly strikes the American chords with its extravagant presentation. Be it the classy exterior, luxury fit and finish on the inside or the comfortable ride quality. It made the strongest effort among all Americans to put forth itself as the Libertarian alternative to the esteemed Germans. Following Lincoln’s new design policy, the Continental received some heavy modification in 2017 intended to further streamline its splendor.

Four years down the line since the last major update, and the Continental remains mostly the same. At a price point of $46,305, it does spell opulence and class, but it's accent is not as clean as some of its rivals. It would certainly be unjust to cross shop it with outright luxury fleet. However, there are other cars with ‘wanna be German’ aspirations like the Volvo S90, Genesis G80 and the Cadillac XTS, that give the Lincoln Continental a serious competition.

Gone is the previously available ‘Select’ trim and the 2020 Lincoln Continental can be had as the Base, Reserve or the Black Label trim. Prices for the base start at $46,305 and go all the way to around $80K, for the fully furnished Black Label trim. Front wheel drive is standard across all trims, but you can pair the available AWD with any of these trims. Climbing up the trim order not only unfolds higher degree of opulence but also more potent powertrains.

We recommend

We pick the mid-ranging Reserve trim bundled with the available all-wheel drive. At a price point of little over $60K, the Reserve trim wraps in all the luxury bells and whistles that one would expect at the price point, along with slightly more convincing engine.

2020 Lincoln Continental Engine and Performance

Powering the 2020 Lincoln Continental is the familiar V6 trio that Ford also uses across its various models. The Base models geta 3.7 liter V6, churning up 305 hp, while the Reserve is powered by a 335 hp, 2.7 liter V6 that has a bit more grunt than the 3.7 liter unit. The top sitting Black Label can be had with a bonkers 3.0 liter V6 that makes 400 horses.

All the three engines are aptly powered to move the Continental around town with ease. Power delivery from each of these is smooth and you barely feel any shortage of power. For spirited souls, the 400 hp V6’s instantaneous torque surge is an overwhelming fun from a car this size.

Under normal highway cruising the Continental’s powertrain seems very composed with a flat power delivery. However, the same cannot be said of hushed driving conditions. When pushed hard under spirited driving conditions, there is a significant lag in power delivery. Nothing wrong with the engine though, it's the ancient 6-speed automatic transmission to blame. The transmission is smooth in its operation but not as seamless as the one in a Volvo S90 or Genesis G80.

Acceleration

Elegance and fury are not an ideal companion in the automotive world. Premium sedans like the Lincoln Continental are more aligned towards comfortable cruising rather than vigorous engagements. Talking about numbers though, the 2020 Lincoln Continental with the 2.7 liter V6 spurts from 0-60 in 5.8 seconds. With the 400 hp 3.0 liter V6, the Continental performs the same task in just 4.8 seconds.

The 2020 Lincoln Continental’s acceleration is impressive for a vehicle of its class and size for sure. However, it is not the quickest among its competitors. The Genesis G80’s refined engine coupled with an excellent 8-speed automatic transmission, makes it the most light-footed among its class.

Ride and Handling

The 2020 Lincoln Continental rides just as classy as it looks. On the move, this flagship Lincoln feels very smooth and comfortable at all speeds. The adaptive suspension manages road imperfections very well and active noise cancellation provides great tranquility in all conditions. Body roll is fairly kept under control and the Continental remains firm and stable, even around corners. The steering wheel is though not as talkative as in a Volvo S90, but it's aptly precise in its business. Overall, the 2020 Lincoln Continental is not a drivers car for sure. It might not be the best handler in its class, but where it does excel is its calm and composed ride that is best enjoyed at the rear seats.

Braking

To bring a vehicle of this size to a complete halt, needs some heavy braking equipment and the 2020 Continental does get the desired braking machinery. All four corners are secured with ventilated discs and ABS along with some other features like Emergency Brake Preparation. The brake pedal feels firm and strong without any signs of fading, bringing the Continental from 60 miles to 0 in 120 feet.

However, among its rivals, the 2020 Lincoln Continental is again pushed back by the Volvo S90 and Genesis G80. The Volvo S90 is blessed with the most effective braking system among the lot, stopping from 60-0 in just 107 feet. Thanks to the Volvo’s enhanced brake optimization and better weight distribution.

2020 Lincoln Continental Fuel Economy

Generally, full-size luxury sedans are not great money-savers when it comes to fuel. The 2020 Lincoln Continental’s 21 mpg is in line with the class average. You don't get business-class luxury features in a thrifty package.

The Volvo S90 with its 25 mpg combined, outshines other members of its class in terms of fuel economy as well. Volvo’s enhanced and efficient mechanics comes handy again for the S90 in delivering best-in class fuel economy.

2020 Lincoln Continental Interior

8.0/10

Take a look inside the 2020 Lincoln Continental and the degree of opulence will ooze you straight away, especially at this price point. The cabin is all wrapped in top-notch material and features with very high attention to detail. Be it the leather, wood and aluminium inserts all round the cabin or the serene interior theme, this Lincoln flagship spells class and luxury. Accentuating the vibe on the inside is Lincoln’s new center console design that encompasses a touchscreen on the upper dash, followed by a set of physical buttons sitting in a tray right below the screen.

2020 Lincoln Continental Sedan Front Seats

The front seats are available with upto 30- way power seats, that you won't find in any other car in the market right now. You can not only adjust each of the left and right under-thigh support individually, but also adjust the headrests slide back and forth, apart from upwards and downwards movement. Apart from this, the front seats also get heating, cooling and multi-level massaging functionality. An optional package adds these features to the rear seats as well. Needless to say, the seats on the 2020 Lincoln Continental are very comfortable and one of the best you can get.

Other than the numerous luxury features and arrangements, the Continental also offers generous all-around space in both the rows. Just like most other business-class luxury sedans, the Continental’s rear seat is the place where most of the buyers are likely to be. Having said that, the Continental offers best-in class rear seat legroom for extended comfort over long journeys.

Infotainment

At the heart of 2020 Lincoln Continental’s infotainment system is an 8.0 inch touchscreen stashed at the center of the dashboard. The infotainment system runs basically on Ford’s Sync 3 platform and comes standard with Apple Carplay, Android Auto and Bluetooth compatibility. Audiophiles can upgrade to upto 19-speaker Revel Ultima audio system that sounds fantastic.

2020 Lincoln Continental Sedan Has a 8.0 inch Touchscreen infotainment system

The 8.0 inch display is sharp and crisp with clutter free menu and decent graphics. The system’s responses are very good and users should have no problem in getting used to it. The touchscreen display can be used to control most of the onboard features like radio, multimedia, navigation as well as interior temperature. Thankfully though, Lincoln has also placed some physical knobs covered in aluminium that not only look elegant but also provide easy accessibility to climate control settings.

Infotainment features

  • 8.0 inch touchscreen infotainment system
  • Apple Carplay and Android Auto
  • Bluetooth and USB connectivity
  • Upto 19-speaker Revel Ultima premium audio
  • Satellite radio

  • ‘TIDAL’ music streaming service with free subscription

Cargo

It's pretty obvious to expect a healthy cargo space from a sedan that's over 200 inches in length, and the 2020 Lincoln Continental doesn't disappoint. A boot space of 16.7 cu-ft is not the best in its segment but is certainly above class average. The Continental trades off some portion of its cargo bay for its class-leading rear seat legroom.

2020 Lincoln Continental Exterior

The Lincoln Continental is one of those sedans that look classy and stately at the same time, whichever angle you look at it from. With its rectangular edges and straight lines, it still carries a traditional elegance that is barely seen on any other car of this segment. The bold yet stately Lincoln grille upfront, long body with straight edges culminating into a tail featuring Lincoln’s signature tail light bars, give it a presence that no other car in the segment has. Adding further to its imposing appeal is the set of 20 inch wheels that come standard on the Reserve and Black Label trims.

Apart from the bold and premium stature, Lincoln has also sprinkled its thoughtful quirks on the Continental. Door handles integrated with the chrome strip running around window lines, and the approach detection mechanism that launches various lighting effects on approaching it with the key fob in pocket, are some very cool and unique features that make the Continental stand apart.

2020 Lincoln Continental Competition

2020 Lincoln Continental vs Cadillac XTS

Needless to say, the XTS is the closest contender to the Lincoln Continental. Sharing the similar American DNA, the XTS does have a mature presence on the road along with premium interiors and comfortable ride quality. The XTS too is a well build package for its class and price, but it just lacks the charm of a Continental. You do get a larger trunk with the XTS, but the Continental offers ‘German-rivalling’, top-class interior fit and finish, it is more comfortable on the move along with more enhanced tech suite. Though the Continental and XTS, both are not very engaging to drive and handle, but the Continental also offers better handling and stability around corners along with a responsive steering.

2020 Cadillac XTS

2020 Lincoln Continental vs Volvo S90

The Volvo S90 is probably the only car in the segment that goes neck-to-neck with the Lincoln Continental. Its very hard to figure out the champion in the clash of these two titans. The S90 gets a modern and streamlined exterior, compared to the stately continental. The S90 has a neatly laid out interior, best in class fuel efficiency and is also more fun to drive than the Continental. The Continental on the other hand offers a more generous cargo area, extensive tech and safety parcel. Surprisingly though, the Continental also offers a more comfortable ride quality than the S90.

2020 Volvo S90

2020 Lincoln Continental vs Genesis G80

The Genesis G80 is one car that completely stands out in its league. The Lincoln continental with its classical presentation does offer a better ride quality than the G80, but this Genesis is a better overall package than the Lincoln. Apart from the meagre fuel economy and a smaller trunk than the Continental, there's not much to complain about the G80. The Genesis G80 offers a smooth ride quality, opulent interiors as well as all the modern gizmos that you would expect at this price point class. Most importantly, the G80 has the most communicative steering among the lot and its 3.3 liter turbo V6 much more punchier than it actually is. In contrast to its comfort and opulence oriented rivals, the G80 offers best in class handling and its spirited attitude also makes it the most fun to drive car in its segment.

2020 Genesis G80

2020 Lincoln Continental Final Verdict

If you are looking for a luxury sedan, where comfort and class is your utmost priority, but you just want to skip the German beat, the 2020 Lincoln Continental certainly deserves a look. However, if you are willing to compromise with your preference for a better value of your hard earned money, the Genesis G80 offers a more complete package.
