Overall Rating

The Lexus UX 200 is a compact SUV that may just look like a hatchback that went through some osmosis phenomena, but there is more to it than what meets the eye. The UX 200 may appear small but yet offers great interior and cargo space.

With prices starting from $32,300 the UX 200 is the stepping stone for Lexus in the crossover segment. The ride locks horns with some major players such as the Volvo XC 40 and the Mercedes Benz GLA 250.

2020 Lexus UX 200 Features

The Lexus UX 200 is offered in two trims, the base UX 200 and the UX 200 Luxury. Prices for the base variant start at $32,300 whereas the UX 200 Luxury demands an extra $5200 from your pocket. There are absolutely no mechanical or power figure changes for both the variants. The Lexus UX 200 and the Lexus UX 200 Luxury both offer FWD configuration and there’s no AWD option for the UX 200 as of now.

We recommend:

We’d recommend you go for the Lexus UX 200 base variant as it offers most of the vital safety, convenience, and entertainment features and going for the Luxury variant adds more to the cost rather than adding to the value.

2020 Lexus UX 200 Engine and Performance

Behind that humongous front grille of the Lexus UX 200 rests a 2.0L inline 4 engine which can generate a handy 169 horsepower along with 151 lb.-ft. Of torque, barging in at 4000 rpm. These figures clarify that the Lexus UX 200 is not going to dazzle your senses with its off-the-line punch. However, the powertrain is rather more suited for building up the potentiality of those 169 ponies evenly, over time, and without much of the decibel drama.

2.0L inline 4 engine of the 2020 Lexus UX 200

The task of delivering the power generated by this I4 to the front wheels is accomplished by a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) setup. This setup lets a single fixed gear handle take care of launch from a standstill and then switches to the CVT.

The Lexus UX 200 is the unlucky one in this comparison with the poorest power figures of the lot. The ride generates just 169 hp, which seems feeble in front of the Volvo’s 187 hp, GMC Acadia 193 hp, and finally the king of the ring- Mercedes-Benz GLA 250, which comes out as the most powerful contender of this segment with more than 200 horses tucked underneath its hood.

How fast is the Lexus UX 200?

The Inline-4 fitted inside the Lexus UX 200 can push the ride from 0-60 mph in 8.6 seconds. Though not an absolute blazing performance that’s going to send chills down your spine, yet a respectable figure for city cruising.

The 2020 Lexus UX 200 does 0-60 in 8.6 seconds

The highest-attainable digits for the Lexus UV 200’s speedometer are 118 mph. This figure is not just far behind all its competitors but can be put to shame even by some compact cars such as the Honda Civic or the Mazda 3.

The Lexus UX 200’s discomposure in the power comparison, gets carried to the acceleration juxtaposition as well. If you are inside a Lexus UX 200, waiting to pull off from a signal, brace yourself to get a nice, detailed look of all the above-mentioned competitors’ taillamps.

What about the braking performance of the Lexus UX 200?

The braking feel of the Lexus UX 200 is fine, but we won’t say that it inspires even the least of the confidence. The brake response is linear, making it fun to hover this ride around the town, but the emergency braking performance is what makes things go further downside for this ride.

The Lexus UX 200 comes fitted with the smallest brake rotors front and rear in this segment. The ride gets a 12-inch brake rotor at the front wheels and an 11.1-inch towards the rear. The result of this configuration is that this crossover requires a distance of 129 ft. to depreciate from 60-0, which is more than the average stopping distance for this class.

What about its driving dynamics?

The Lexus does not make any overpromises regarding the UX 200’s ride and performance and the UX 200 does well for the appointed task. The ride is pretty playful around the town and feels confident while going taking-on smooth turns and bumps. However, just in case you become a little more playful and try taking on some sharp cuts, body-roll follows, making the UX 200 feel unsettled and unstable.

The soft suspension, short wheelbase, and swift steering make the UX 200 a fun to drive city rover. The power feels right for the city streets, without any overhyped but decent throttle response. The steering provides great feedback and feels connected most of the time.

2020 Lexus UX 200 short wheelbase and compact size makes around the town driving fun

The Lexus UX 200 offers three driving modes- Normal, Sport, and Eco. Switch between these modes and you’ll feel the contrast between the throttle response and the steering’s weight, but nothing more than that. Of all the modes, the eco mode feels the least enthusiastic but is also your pocket’s best pal, saving the fuel bucks for you. The Sport mode makes up for the best driving experience you can get in the Lexus UX 200, as it sharpens the throttle response, stiffens the suspension, and adds weight to the steering, making it feel a lot more connected to the tarmac.

2020 Lexus UX 200 Fuel Economy

Being less on power isn’t always adversity for you, and the Lexus UX 200 mpg figures demonstrate this saying very well. Where the Lexus truly beats the challenge is with its efficiency. The engine of the Lexus UX 200 was enhanced to return incredible efficiency figures and it truly does. It returns 33 miles to the gallon combined which is a generally excellent figure in the fragment.

The Mercedes Benz GLA 250 pursues straightaway, however, returns just 28 miles to the gallon combined. The Volvo XC 40, makes a close chase raking in at the third position with a combined fuel economy of 27, and finally the GMC Arcadia with 23 combined mpg under its belt. The Lexus UX 200’s fuel tank capacity, though, is the lowest in the segment, but that does not hinder the numbers for its city and highway range, accrediting to the great fuel economy.

2020 Lexus UX 200 Interior

The Lexus UX 200’s interiors are persuasively uptown for a car of this budget. The layout of the interior is attractive and arouses visual interest. The presence of a lot of soft-touch material lends the UX 200 an uptown aura, complement that material with soft and pleasing upholstery and there you have it- the Lexus UX 200 emitting a plush and opulent vibe. Each and every surface inside the UX 200 receives some kind of texture, which further increases the cabin’s visual appeal.

Speaking of comfort, the Lexus UX 200 front seat room is ample and provides for a laid-back rode around the town. The front headroom, shoulder room, and legroom give you a roomy feel. However, the back seat arrangement feels a bit tight but still positions itself alongside the expectations from a little SUV.

Rear Row (Head/Shoulder/Leg) (in)

Getting in and out of the UX 200 is a cakewalk for the front passengers, owing to the wide-opening doors that provide suitable access and the height of the seats which further lubricates this process.

The ride height, however, feels a bit odd as the height of the seats and the high beltline makes you feel as if you are sitting quite close to the ground, which supposedly is not an SUV trait. The steering wheels do not provide you with a sufficient range of adjustments to find the ideal sitting position, thus hampering outside visibility. Moreover, the thick roof pillar further adds to this visibility obstacle, creating blind spots.

Does it come loaded with tech inside?

When it comes to the infotainment setup, Lexus all of a sudden starts acting like the student who’s been failing continuously and yet is not even a bit of interested in changing his strategy. The technology that looks crisp on paper, in reality, is a cumbersome task to deal with. The primary method of interacting with the infotainment panel is via the touchpad controller, which asks for all of your attention to do the slightest of its job. Though there are physical buttons scattered around various surfaces but getting used to them is going to take a lot of time.

The 7.0-inch standard infotainment screen in the 2020 Lexus UX 200

Moving away from these disparities, some prominent infotainment features that the Lexus UX 200 provides are:

  • Satellite Radio
  • Real-time Traffic Updates
  • AM/FM
  • USB with External Media Control
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto
  • Amazon Alexa
  • Google Assistant

What about utility?

When we said that the Lexus UX 200 was an ideal car for around-the-town spins, we definitely didn’t mean that it was just meant to carry your laptop bangs and Starbucks cappuccinos (or latte maybe).

2020 Lexus UX 200 boot space

Stuff the ride with your family’s weekend getaway luggage, and witness it pulling off the utilitarian character effortlessly. The Lexus UX 200 offers you with a boot space of 21.7 cubic feet, which can easily fit 4-5 full-size bags.

The GMC Acadia finishes up last with just 12.8 cubic feet of space, but it can accommodate your 2 extra folks.

The UX badge is the smallest crossover manufactured by Lexus. The UX 200, following the company’s trait sports a distinguished and bold design language. It has very good proportions and looks distinctly, Lexus.

The front of the Lexus UX 200, just like every other Lexus product is dominated by the iconic hourglass shape spindle grille that houses a lovely texture. The hood of the UX 200 further complemented by a long elated hood that lends the ride an illusion of more length than it really has. The bi-LED headlamps stand out and the lightning bolt DRLs complete the look for it.

2020 Lexus UX 200 Competition

Lexus UX 200 vs. Volvo XC 40

Volvo offerings have always been an epitome of luxury and opulence, and the XC 40 is no different. Priced at $33,700 the XC 40 is the entry-level SUV of Volvo. The ride comes fitted with a 2.0L I4 that can generate 187 horses along with 221 lb.-ft. Of torque. These power figures can catapult the ride from 0-60 in 6.7 seconds, which is the fastest in this segment. The Volvo XC 40 offers you a combined MPG of 27 and with a boot space of 20.7 cubic feet is an ideal choice for people who want a high-riding, plush family ferry.

Volvo XC 40

Lexus UX 200 vs. Mercedes-Benz GLA 250

The Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 is the priciest offering of this compact SUV segment, with prices starting from $34,250. The GLA 250’s 2.0L inline-4 is tuned to produce 208 hp and 258 lb.-ft. Of torque, which makes the GLA the fastest car of this lot to cover the quarter of a mile distance, in just 12.5 seconds. With a combined mpg of 28, the Mercedes Benz GLA 250 absolutely nails it every aspect, be it performance or practicality.

Mercedes-Benz GLA 250

2020 Lexus UX 200 Final Verdict

The UX 200 is the passage-level SUV for Lexus and this notion has two faces for the ride. The UX 200 being a Lexus packs fine level luxury but also gets crushed under the burden of expectations buyers often keep from a Lexus offering.

Elsewise, the performance is up to the mark, with a peppy and practical lookout. The ride is fun to drive around towns and can also pack enough of your luggage for a weekend getaway, thus coping with the utility prospect with ease. Stir up that mix with great fuel efficiency, a wide range of technology features, uptown interior, and urbane styling and there you have it - a great Crossover Utility Vehicle, the Lexus UX 200.
