Lexus has been one of the top choices for the people who demand trust, reliability, opulence, performance, and stand-out looks, all in one car. One such car that carries all these hallmarks, is the RX 450hL. Overall Rating

The Lexus RX 450hL houses a 3.5L V6 engine, that along with 3 electric motors, belts out 308 hp and 247 lb.-ft. of torque. The 450hL also caters to its occupants with a finely crafted interior and impressive looks.

Just like all the other good things, the Lexus RX 450hL also faces a lot of opposition from other hybrids in the market, which make up for a tough competition to this Lexus offering. The RX 450hL locks its horns with some big-time masters of the MPV segment such as the Ford Explorer, the Mercedes GLE, and the Acura MDX. so will a new offering such as the RX 450hL be able to survive the fight posted by these veterans? Scroll down to find out...

2020 Lexus RX 450hL hybrid Features

8.9/10

The Lexus RX 450hL is a stand-alone trim and is the only 6-seater hybrid on offer from the house of Lexus. The Lexus RX 450hL houses the same configuration as the smaller RX 450h, with a 3.5L V6 engine, and 3 electric motors.

We recommend

Since the Lexus RX 450hL is a stand-alone trim, no scope of getting choosy here. However, fret not, the ride packs in all the bells and whistles that you’d expect from a 6-seater hybrid of this range, and that too from the house of Lexus.

2020 Lexus RX 450hL hybrid Engine and Performance

7.0/10

The Lexus RX 450hL houses the same powertrain setup as its smaller sibling- the 450h. Under the hood rests a 3.5L V6 engine, which is further assisted by three electric motors. Two electric motors are front-mounted with each wheel driven by an electric motor and the rear wheels being controlled by a single unit.

The complete output belted out by the setup is also the same as the 450h, with 308 ponies and 247 lb.-ft. of peak torque, entering the picture at 4600 rpm. All the power is delivered to all the wheels via an Electronic Continuously Variable Transmission panel.

How fast is the Lexus RX 450hL?

Accelerating with bolting speeds is definitely not the forte for the Lexus RX 450hL, as it specializes in hosting up to 6 occupants, and in order to consummate this task, the RX 450hL deploys a lot of heft in itself.

The RX 450hL possesses the same powertrain as the Lexus RX 450h, the engine provides ample muscle and the electric motors take care of providing low-end torque. However, the acceleration figures take a toll in comparison to the standard 450h, due to the added weight.

What about the braking performance of the Lexus RX 450hL?

The Lexus RX 450hL offers a similar braking arrangement as the smaller RX 450h. The front end gets ventilated disc brakes with a diameter of 12.9-inches. The rear wheels adorn solid discs of 13.3-inches.

We do not have the exact figure 60-0 figure for the Lexus RX 450hL, yet the braking performance feels fine. Under regular usage, there is a mild nosedive. However, when applied under emergency situations, the nosedive becomes very prominent.

What about its driving dynamics?

The Lexus RX 450hL drives very much like its smaller sibling the RX 450h. However, the added heft factor dwindles with its sprinting capabilities. Apart from that, the 450hL moves around the city without breaking a sweat. The vehicle doesn't feel tiring to drive, credits to the properly weighted steering wheel, and the brake pedal.

The Lexus RX 450h's steering wheel gives incredible feedback. The steering wheel also delivers smooth and crisp responses to driver inputs, as a result, the RX 450hL despite being a long and wide car feels easy to maneuver around the town.

2020 Lexus RX 450hL hybrid SUV Rear View

The RX 450hL’s hybrid powertrain, may not deliver great sprinting figures, yet the acceleration feels smooth and linear. The electric motors, that provide great torque, even at low-revs ensure that the acceleration does not feel laggy and numb.

2020 Lexus RX 450hL hybrid Fuel Economy

9.0/10

Fuel efficiency is a major reason why the buyers may choose the Lexus RX 450hL over the gasoline-only RX 350L. The expectations are high, and the RX 450hL does not disappoint, delivering handsome fuel-efficiency figures.

With the spot-on braking, The RX 450hL can go a distance of 29 city miles or 28 highway miles for every gallon of gasoline you stuff into it. Summing up these figures, we get a combined mpg figure of 29, which is a major improvement over the standard RX 350L’s 22 combined mpg.

2020 Lexus RX 450hL hybrid Interior

8.0/10

Lexus has been a maestro at fabricating tasteful interiors, and it seems to be getting even better at it, with each passing day. The level of fineness inside the cabin lends the RX 450hL an edge over most of its competitors, except for the Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 Hybrid (of Course!).

2020 Lexus RX 450hL hybrid SUV Front Seats

All the surfaces inside the RX 450hL are covered in fine-grade materials such as Nuluxe and Semi-Aniline Perforated Leather. Well just looking the part is not the only thing that the Lexus RX 450hL’s cabin does. Practicality is what makes the RX 450hL’s cabin so intriguing, with all the buttons and knobs being logically placed and easily falling in the driver’s range.

The seats of the RX 450hL are truly comfortable and are a cozy spot to be in. There is great space in all the directions for the first and second-row seat occupants, but what seems to be more of an issue here is the third-row seating. The third-row seats of the Lexus RX 450hL are big enough to accommodate only children and will feel tight even for medium-sized adults.

Does it come loaded with tech inside?

The RX 450hL gets the Lexus’s Enform UI, which beams up all the vital information on a standard 8-inch screen. You can also opt for an optional 12.3-inch touchscreen panel for some extra bucks. However, in case you decide to stick with the 8-inch panel, be prepared to experience some fuss over there. The primary way of interacting with the 8-inch screen is via a touchpad-controller which requires you to divert all your attention towards it as it keeps on acting clumsy. Some of the prominent infotainment features of the Lexus RX450hL are:

  • 9 speakers
  • Stand-alone navigation mirroring app
  • Real-time weather display
  • Speed sensitive volume
  • Wireless phone connectivity
  • SiriusXM AM/FM/HD/Satellite with seek-scan, single in-dash CD player
  • Concealed antenna
  • Enform Wi-Fi internet access
  • Steering-wheel mounted audio controls
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto
  • Radio data system
  • Mark Levinson Digital signal processor
  • Voice-activated radio

Creature comforts on offer in the Lexus RX 450hL

2020 Lexus RX 450hL hybrid SUV Infotainment System

  • SmartAccess Proximity key
  • Keyfob trunk/hatch/door release
  • Remote keyless entry
  • Rear door bins
  • 1-touch down
  • Sunroof/convertible roof FOB controls

  • Steering wheel with power tilting, power telescoping, auto tilt-away
  • Retained accessory power
  • Day-night rearview mirror
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Distance pacing cruise control
  • Automatic temperature control

What about utility?

In order to attain its primary goal of accommodating 6 guests, the Lexus RX 450hL takes a beating from all the competitors in terms of the cargo capacity. Will all the three rows in place, the ride offers just 7.5 cubic feet of space for the storage of cargo, which is a meek number.

However, the RX 450hL offers the option of folding down both the second and third-row seats. With the third row folded down, the Lexus RX 450hL offers 23 cubic feet of cargo space, and with the second-row down there is 34.1 cubic feet of space of offer.

The RX 450hL is a crossover-SUV with the typical Lexus design and character. For the year 2020, the RX 450hL has received a refreshed front and rear fascia. The most noteworthy change can be witnessed in the front grille. Gone is the simple-looking, vertically striped grille. The grille now has a modified spindle-shaped grille confined in an intricate mesh. What frames this grille on both ends is a set of inverted-L shaped LED DRLs, which replace the old bulb DRMs.

2020 Lexus RX 450hL hybrid  Third Quarter View

The side profile of the 2020 Lexus RX 450hL has also been buffed up and looks a lot more sturdy than that of the previous iteration. The presence of well-defined crease lends this ride a much more macho and urbane look while retaining the character of a crossover-SUV.

Lexus RX 450hL vs. Ford Explorer Limited Hybrid

The Ford Explorer is arch-rival to the Lexus RX 450hL with prices starting from $52,280. The Explorer houses a 3.3L V6 engine, that belts out 318 hp and 322 lb.-ft. Of torque. The Ford Explorer is a decent car, but it does not offer the craftiness and the appeal like the RX 450hL. However, the Explorer Hybrid triumphs over the RX 450hL in terms of the cabin and cargo space and can seat 6 people more comfortably than the RX 450hL.

2020 Ford Explorer Limited Hybrid

Lexus RX 450hL vs. Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 Hybrid

Mercedes sets its foot in the hybrid-crossover arena with this offering. The GLE 450 Hybrid is the most expensive offering of this lot with prices starting from $61,150. The GLE 450 is the brawniest car in the lot, housing a 3L inline-6 engine, that belts out 362 hp and 369 lb.-ft. Of torque. However, the basic drawback here with the GLE 450 Hybrid is that it can house a maximum of 5 occupants. The area, where the GLE 450 Hybrid triumphs over all the other cars of this section are the levels of luxury and premiumness it has to offer.

Driving has always been pretty smooth because of the transmission which barely feels doings its thing. Handling also happens to be pretty precise and soft for a huge suv. I love how refined and easy it drives in snow. That pretty much seals the deal for me

Pros - Cargo, hands free tailgate, smart cupholders

Cons - No usb c ports, knee and headroom in second and third row, only one hook in cargo

8 /10 Overall Rating

Gone are the days when comfort and convenience used to be a priority for automakers. It is more about competition and gaining sales nowadays. Lexus is a fine example of this statement which seems to only care about more sales numbers than customer satisfaction. Right when other Makes started to introduce three-row seats in their mid size suvs, Lexus didn’t want to stay out of the competition and joined the list even if it didn’t make sense. Ironically, the third has close to an inch of knee room and of course can’t fit any real person unless one is amenable to give up the basic level of comfort as well and has no problem keeping his/her head tilted sideways for the entire journey. Good it at least has a split folding option which is the only way all this makes sense.
