Lexus has never compromised with the safety of any of its cars. Since it’s a luxury car manufacturer, Lexus cars come equipped with a wide range of safety features. The chassis of the Lexus cars are also specially designed to absorb the shock in the event of a crash. The RX 450h, being a sedan, has specially designed crumple zone which absorbs the force and redistributes it keeping the passengers in the cabin safe in the event of a crash. To add to that, with the 2020 model, Lexus has made some safety features standard.

IIHS and NHTSA are the two premier organizations that are tasked with ensuring the safety of cars in the US. Both of these organizations carry out crash tests on cars under different circumstances and rate the car according to their performance.

Features that make the 2019 Lexus RX 450h safe:

  • Rigid body structure with crumple zones :- The specially designed chassis of the RX 450h helps to dissipate the force of a collision. The crumple zones in the front and rear are intentionally designed to compress at a controlled rate, helping protect occupants within the more rigid passenger compartment.
  • 10 Airbags :- The cabin of the 2020 RX 450h is equipped with 10 airbags. The front-passenger seat is designed to detect whether the seat is occupied by an adult or a child, or is vacant. In case the system detects a child or empty passenger seat, the system prevents the passenger’s front, side and knee airbags from being deployed. The front passenger’s airbag features two chambers, creating an indentation in the center impact area that helps to provide occupant protection in a severe frontal collision.
  • Blind Spot Assist with rear cross traffic alert :- To help you change lanes with confidence, the available Blind Spot Monitor on the RX 450h is designed to detect and warn you of vehicles approaching or positioned in adjacent lanes. Intuitive Parking Assist uses sensors that are designed to detect surrounding objects and notify you of a detected object’s location and proximity, while Rear Cross-Traffic Alert can help when backing out of a parking space.
  • Vehicle Dynamic Integrated Management :- VDIM is designed to predict and take steps to help prevent a skid even before it occurs by using a combination of individual-wheel braking, torque modulation and steering torque assistance.
  • Vehicle Stability Control :- This system standard on the RX 450h can detect sideslip of the wheels while cornering, and helps to control it using modulation of engine power and selective application of individual brakes. It works in conjunction with the Anti-lock Braking System and Traction Control to help improve driver control under some adverse conditions.
  • Lexus Enform Safety Connect :- Lexus Enform Safety Connect offers you the peace of mind of knowing that Roadside Assistance can be there when you want it most. Whether you’re involved in a collision and unable to call for help, your vehicle is stolen, or there is any other type of emergency, assistance can be sent directly to your vehicle’s GPS location. Safety Connect is included for the first 10 years of ownership.
  • Traction Control :- Traction Control senses the onset of wheel spin, then selectively applies the brakes and automatically transfers power to the driving wheel with a better grip.

How safe are the competitors?

Prime competitors of the Lexus RX 450h are the Acura MDX Hybrid, Mercedes GLC Hybrid, and Volvo XC 60 Hybrid.

The Acura MDX Hybrid performed well in the IIHS crash tests and received a good rating in most of the categories. In the NHTSA crash tests, it received an overall rating of 5-stars.

The Merc GLC Hybrid has not been rated by NHTSA. However, in the IIHS crash tests, it performed extremely well and was awarded the “2019 Top Safety Pick +” award. There is also no reported recall on this car as per the NHTSA website. The 2019 Volvo XC60 has not been rated by NHTSA or IIHS.

Final Verdict

It is safe to say that the RX 450h is a very safe car. The specially designed chassis of the RX 450h is able to withstand large force in the event of a crash keeping the integrity of the car intact. This is supported by the IIHS crash test data which shows that the maximum force that can be withstood by the roof is 21,136 lbs. The strength to weight of the chassis is 4.79 which is pretty impressive. JD Power rated the predecessor of the RX 450h as “among the best cars”. There are also no reported recalls on the RX 450h. Therefore, if you are looking for a luxury crossover and safety is your top priority, we highly recommend the 2020 Lexus RX 450h.

Minute details are missing

Pros - Pointer pad, blind spot mirrors, paddle shifters,

Cons - Scratch friendly wood trim around cupholders, audio buttons on center stack are dinky

Safety Review

9 /10 Safety Rating

Blind spot warning system and automatic braking system along with all the mandatory safety features are on board. No issues with the safety unless it starts to show me blemishes there as well. I hope it doesn't

Lexus used to a milestone of luxury and looks and seems like milestones have changed with time. RX350h is a fine example of how quality degraded with respect to time. On papers, it has paddle shifters and what not but in reality, having plush quality materials was more pressing priority than giving more features. I'm pointing to the scratch friendly wood trim especially around cup holders which is...

Comfortable but I expected more

Lexus no doubt is comfortable than the rest of the cars I've driven but to be honest, I expected a little more from it. Fancy stuff like lumbar support and heated/ventilated seats are in place but that has been provided at the cost of driver legroom. Armrest on the other hand could also have been generously soft and bigger. Apart from all this, everything is pretty perfect and seats are acquinted ...
