2021 Lexus RX 450h hybrid Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Updated on: September 8, 2020

The Lexus RX 450h Hybrid SUV is a perfect equilibrium of performance and comfort. It’s a hybrid SUV that is coming with elaborate safety suites, redefined features, and a fantastic performance. Speaking of the 2021 Lexus RX 450h, the hybrid SUV will venture into the new year with just some minor modifications in the feature list. It was just in 2020 when the Lexus RX witnessed some styling refurbishments, with the update entering just its second model year, the 2021 RX 450h will not get any major changes. This implies that the prices of the 2021 Lexus RX 450h will also be very much similar to the 2020 model, starting from $47,720. Though there has been no official word from the company about the release of the 2021 Lexus RX 450h, yet we expect the new model to hit the dealerships in fall 2020.

Overall Rating

The 2021 Lexus RX 450h will carry on with the same powertrain setup of a 3.5L V6 engine coupled with an electric motor that’s good for 308 horsepower. Like other hybrid SUVs, the 2021 Lexus RX 450h also has competitors booming in the industry. The 2020 Acura MDX hybrid, the 2020 Ford Explorer hybrid, and the 2020 Land Rover Discovery hybrid are some of its worthy competitors.

2021 Lexus RX 450h hybrid Features

9.1/10

Known for creating a perfect balance of luxury and style, Lexus has filled the new 2021 RX 450h hybrid SUV with standard features that were available in its 2020 version as well along with additional safety owing to its safety suite. There’s only one trim that you get, which is the RX 450h. So, you don’t need to look elsewhere!

The 2021 Lexus RX 450h will supposedly be a carryover model that’ll venture into the new year with very minor changes. Thus, the price of the 2021 Lexus RX 450h is also expected to remain similar, thus starting from $47,720.

2021 Lexus RX 450h hybrid Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

Lexus hasn’t compromised a bit on the quality of the materials outfitted in the car, and thus, you don’t have to worry a bit about the safety and handling of your vehicle. J.D. Power hasn’t yet provided the quality rating for the 2020 version; however, considering the 2019-ratings of 8.5/10, we may presume that the 2021 Lexus RX would also be reliable.

Besides, we haven’t heard of any safety recalls for the car’s 2019 or 2020 versions, so we keep our fingers crossed here as well. J.D. Power’s reliability rating for the 2020 version was 4.5/5, which was also pretty good. We may soon hear J.D. Power’s rating for the more recent models of the RX 450h. Above all, you need not worry about the safety and reliability of the car.

Reliability and Ownership Costs

A car that delivers convenience, comfort, and performance continues to attract eyes more than its impersonators. Sitting at a pedestal of the top-selling hybrid SUVs consistently for several years, the Lexus RX 450h in its renewed 2021 version shall carry the features of its elders with some slight alterations to its exteriors.

Speaking of the Lexus RX 350h’s JD Power report card, the 2020 Lexus RX 450h bagged a total score of 85 out of a maximum 100, which happens to be a pretty impressive score. Below is a further breakdown of this score:

  • Quality and reliability: 89 out of 100
  • Driving Experience: 82 out of 100
  • Resale: 81 out of 100
  • Dealership Experience: 86 out of 100

Since the 2021 Lexus RX 450h will be a carryover model with the incorporation of some additional features, we expect the same score to imply on the new model as well.

The 2020 Lexus RX 450h has an average cost of about $52,500. While people in Arizona would have to shell out more, the people from New Jersey would enjoy the lowest costs.

With no safety recalls or major customer complaints, Lexus offers a reliable option in its RX 450h hybrid SUV. Plus, if you’ll religiously follow the periodic maintenance schedules, there’s nothing you need to worry about. But of course, the unwanted maintenance costs may get heavy on your budget.

Miles Per Dollar

2021 Lexus RX 450h hybrid Buying Advice

We would definitely advise you to buy the Lexus RX 450h hybrid SUV if you need a luxurious car with groovy exteriors. Since there’s only one trim that Lexus is offering with this hybrid SUV, there’s no confusion there. You can surely go for this 5-seater, feature-rich hybrid SUV for a more-than-satisfactory driving experience. Besides, as is evident with a hybrid car, you are also getting a better fuel economy.

Is buying a used car Lexus RX 450h Hybrid SUV a good idea?

Testimonies tell that if you want a car with excellent residual value, then the Lexus RX would be the best investment for you. Since its maintenance cost is reasonable, a used Lexus RX wouldn’t cost you much even if there’s a requirement for repair or maintenance. Also, the warranty passes on to the second owner. So, if you happen to get hold of a used Lexus RX 450h within the first four years of its purchase, it will be a bonanza!

According to the depreciation value, the 2019 model of the car is the one for you. Besides, it has also been honored with a ‘2019-5 Year Cost to Own Award’ by KBB.com.

Minute details are missing

Pros - Pointer pad, blind spot mirrors, paddle shifters,

Cons - Scratch friendly wood trim around cupholders, audio buttons on center stack are dinky

Overall Review

8 /10 Overall Rating

Lexus used to a milestone of luxury and looks and seems like milestones have changed with time. RX350h is a fine example of how quality degraded with respect to time. On papers, it has paddle shifters and what not but in reality, having plush quality materials was more pressing priority than giving more features. I'm pointing to the scratch friendly wood trim especially around cup holders which is not appreciated. No one would appreciated these minor blemishes in a 55K+ suv from Lexus.

Comfortable but I expected more

Pros - Lumbar support seats, heated seats, steering controls

Cons - Legroom for driver, armrest in center console

Overall Review

9 /10 Overall Rating

Lexus no doubt is comfortable than the rest of the cars I've driven but to be honest, I expected a little more from it. Fancy stuff like lumbar support and heated/ventilated seats are in place but that has been provided at the cost of driver legroom. Armrest on the other hand could also have been generously soft and bigger. Apart from all this, everything is pretty perfect and seats are acquinted to any weather condition to maximize comfort
