Overall Rating

It makes the standard NX 300 look a lot more imposing on the inside and out courtesy of a bigger and bolder grille, alloy wheels, F Sport seats and blacked-out headliner. Other than that, the NX 300 F Sport sources power from the same 235 hp 2.0-liter turbo-four. In fact, the only performance upgrades that the F Sport badge offers are F Sport suspension with adaptive dampers.

Sp for a price of about $3,000 over the standard NX 300, the NX 300 F Sport may not offer the extra bit of power and punch but definitely equips this Lexus with features that justify its premium and luxury lineage. But the world of crossover SUVs is a competitive one, and none understand that better than Mercedes-Benz’s GLC 300 and BMW’s X3.

2020 Lexus NX 300 F Sport SUV Features

6.0/10

The F Sport is the more tasteful variant of the already well-built and premium NX 300. It adds various F Sport-specific elements on the inside and outside of the NX 300 to make it look a lot more upmarket.

The most notable styling elements include leather-trim shift knob and steering wheel, F Sport front seats with enhanced bolsters, black headliner, F Sport badges on front and rear, blacked-out side mirrors and F Sport 18-inch alloy wheels.

Besides covering the NX 300 in more upscale trim, the F Sport variant also adds performance upgrades like F Sport-tuned suspension with adaptive dampers, Sport and Sport+ mode, race-inspired pedal shifters and aluminum pedals.

We recommend

The F Sport variant of the NX 300 already adds several cool features to make this crossover SUV from Lexus appear as a much better-rounded package than the standard NX 300. Though to make your NX 300 F Sport stand out to opt for the Premium package which adds features like a power moonroof and electrochromic heated exterior mirrors with auto-reverse tilt-down.

2020 Lexus NX 300 F Sport SUV Engine and Performance

5.0/10

The F Sport treatment does nothing to enhance the NX 300’s powertrain. So under the hood of the NX 300 F Sport lies the same 2.0-liter turbo-four pushing out 235 hp and 258 lb.-ft. torque. Also common on the F Sport is the six-speed automatic featuring Lexus’s Electronically Controlled Transmission with intelligence (ECT-i).

2020 Lexus NX 300 F Sport Has a 2.0-liter I-4 premium Engine

The six-speed automatic unit allows you to manually hold gears with the help of race-inspired paddle shifters to engage the enthusiast in you. Together with the help of six-speed automatic, the 2.0-liter turbo-four sends power to either the front wheels or all the wheels of this Lexus.

All crossover SUVs in this segment get a similarly-sized 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. However, at 235 hp, the NX 300 F Sport is the least powerful of the lot.

How fast is the Lexus NX 300 F Sport?

Lexus tuned the NX 300’s turbo-four to favor efficiency over performance, and the F Sport trim carries over the same engine with no changes whatsoever. Consequently, the NX 300 F Sport is just as laid back.

2020 Lexus NX 300 F Sport 0-60 MPH in just 7.2 sec

Even the six-speed automatic follows in the mindset of the efficiency inclined four-pot. Its sluggish at lower speeds but feels a lot more responsive as the NX 300 F Sport rolls ahead to pick-up pace.

One really has to mush the pedal in order to get the NX 300 F Sport going, which it surely does thanks to plenty of torque down low on the powerband. Though the engine and transmission take their own time to come to life. As a result, this Lexus might not be the quickest to the 60 mph mark but does well to make up over a quarter-mile.

What about the braking performance of the Lexus NX 300 F Sport?

Braking on the NX 300 F Sport is taken care of by power-assisted disc brakes on all the four corners of this Lexus with the anti-locking feature. Though the brakes on this Lexus are barely big enough to efficiently shed speed of such a crossover. Cleary a measure to keep costs in check.

None of the crossovers in this segment have yet been tested by experts for their stopping capabilities. Though the NX 300 F Sport is one of the heaviest in this lineup of SUVs and gets the smallest brakes.

What about its driving dynamics?

The NX 300 F Sport follows in the lineage of Lexus’s comfortable ride quality and precise handling, but the F Sport treatment builds on it quite remarkably. In addition to the standard drive modes on the basic NX 300, the NX 300 F Sport features Sport/Sport+ modes and F Sport-tuned suspension with adaptive dampers.

2020 Lexus NX 300 F Sport  Front View

Choosing the Sport/Sport+ mode stiffens the level of damping on the suspension so this Lexus remains a lot more composed while cornering and keeps body lean well in check. Though the real difference is noticed off the track. The standard suspension on the basic NX 300 is on the stiffer side, so it does cause discomfort over unruly surfaces. On the other hand, the adaptive dampers on the NX 300 F Sport make this Lexus feel a lot more pliant.

2020 Lexus NX 300 F Sport SUV Fuel Economy

4.0/10

The slouched nature of the NX 300 F sport’s engine and transmission should translate to better efficiency on the road, which it does. Though the NX 300 F Sport’s lethargic performance is in no way made up for by its MPG ratings as they are in no way incredible. It’s smaller fuel tank further diminishes practicality.

Both Germans, BMW and Merc offer best in class efficiency and range. The Lexus, on the other hand, offers decent but its smaller fuel tank results in below-average range.

2020 Lexus NX 300 F Sport SUV Interior

6.0/10

On the inside of the NX 300 F Sport are several F Sport-specific features that simply make this Lexus a lot more indulging. Now the standard NX 300 boasts a pretty spacious cabin, and so does the NX 300 F sport. However, the F Sport treatment adds F Sport seats in the front with a heating function. They are also a lot more heavily bolstered than the standard seats on the basic NX 300.

2020 Lexus NX 300 F Sport Front Seats

Even the steering wheel can be heated. So the NX 300 F Sport offers a heightened level of comfort and support. Also, higher on the NX 300 F Sport is the level elegance. While metallic Sport trim all around and blacked-out headliner look and feel a lot more premium, the aluminum pedals and race-inspired paddle shifters to make the already well-crafted cabin look a lot more appealing.

The availability of roominess and comfort all around inside the NX 300 F Sport is quite commendable. Even the second row is adequately accommodating. Though it is the GLC 300 that is the most accommodating for passengers.

Does it come loaded with tech inside?

The 2020 Lexus NX 300 gets a 10.3-inch split-screen multimedia display that displays crisp images and clear fonts and can be operated via a remote touchpad. This easy to use split-screen system can be had with the following tech:

2020 Lexus NX 300 F Sport Has a 10.3-inch Infotainment Display
  • Amazon Alexa
  • Android Auto
  • Waze
  • Lexus Enform Wi-Fi
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Lexus Enform Service Connect
  • G-Force and turbo boost display
  • Lexus Enform dynamic navigation
  • Bluetooth
  • Smart access

What about utility?

The Lexus NX 300 F Sport may offer a spacious cabin for its occupants but what it does not offer is an equally accommodating trunk. Although it has a boot spacious enough to be considered practical, the sloping roofline does take away a lot of it.

2020 Lexus NX 300 F Sport SUV Exterior

7.0/10

The exterior appearance of the NX 300 F Sport is typical of Lexus. It features extensive use of angles instead of sculpts, and except for a few F Sport-specific customizations this NX 300 looks exactly similar to the standard NX 300. The most noticeable differences lie upfront.

The signature spindle grille of this Lexus is a lot more bolder and defined and features F Sport mesh grille inserts. Even the fake air vents at the side are wider than in the standard NX 300. Besides that, this Lexus gets F Sport 18-inch alloy wheels and blacked-out side mirrors to match.

2020 Lexus NX 300 F Sport Three Quarter View

Further setting aside the NX 300 F Sport are the F sport badges on the front fenders and rear doors. Breaking monotony from regular SUV styling, this overtly imposing Lexus is complete with LED taillights and dual exhaust tips at the back.

2020 Lexus NX 300 F Sport SUV Competition

7.0/10

Lexus NX 300 F Sport vs. Mercedes-Benz GLC 300

The Lexus NX 300 F Sport is about $3,000 less expensive than the 300. For that extra price though, the Merc-Benz GLC 300 offers better performance, higher efficiency, improved practicality and a bigger, more spacious cabin. The NX 300 F Sport is a premium crossover SUV but it not as much as the Merc.

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300

Lexus NX 300 F Sport vs. BMW X3

It’s hard not only for Lexus but for probably most automakers to outcompete a Bimmer and the X3 is no exception. It has the most fuel-efficient engine in this comparo and also the biggest boot. At the same time, it is generously accommodating and delivers punchier performance than the F Sport.

2020 BMW X3

2020 Lexus NX 300 F Sport SUV Final Verdict

6.0/10

The Lexus NX 300 F Sport makes up for a practical choice in a world devoid of options. Even though the name reads F Sport, it lacks in performance which Lexus says is made up for by its efficiency but even that isn't the best in class. Also whatever fuel efficiency it does offer, is marred by its smaller fuel tank. Then it has a spacious cabin but the trunk isn’t big enough. So for an SUV that costs almost $40,000, the Lexus NX 300 F Sport isn’t a decent package.
