The Lexus LS with its Japanese flair goes up against high-end luxury sedans from its German rivals. Traditionally, the hybrid LS models showcased smooth and powerful V8 with an electric motor, but the latest 500h uses not-so-charming V6 with two electric motors. The Hybrid version of LS 500 is placed at $79,960.

Since the brand’s debut 30 years ago, Lexus has developed its own identity. The early bird LS mimicked the class leader with styling and interior trimming make it a Japanese Mercedes. Today, the LS offers a unique class proposition. From the outside, Lexus uses dramatic spindle grille dominating the front of the car. The fluidic bodywork emphasizes the wheel arches and the length of the big sedan with the L-shape distinguish it from more anonymous competitors. The unique on-road presence deserves a price competent enough, placed at $79,960.

Somethings are too perfect to be true. The other side of the LS 500 indicates the same. With complex infotainment controls, no Android Auto and cramped rear in comparison to its German rivals, LS 500 still have reasons delimiting it rank higher in the segment. This affordable large luxury sedan still holds a high head-turning-quotient.

2020 Lexus LS 500h hybrid Features

8.0/10

It is an established notion that Toyota is a global leader in hybrid tech. Lexus is a luxury division of Toyota, it is believed that the LS 500h would come down with the best in class hybrid performance. But the hybrid LS suggests otherwise. The electric/gas handoff is rough, noisy and jarring in a first-gen hybrid, and the regenerative brakes are sluggish and completely nonlinear. The regenerative braking either doesn’t slow you as per the driver’s input or throw you through the windshield. This LS 500h is simply not a pleasant car to drive from any perspective.

Making an entry in 2019, the LS 500h has been a game-changer for Lexus and also for the segment which was stagnant. The LS 500h comes with a V6 combined with two generators. The LS 500h offers a hybrid powertrain maximizing the fuel efficiency in similar skin. Though the transcendence of LS 500 through every standard is just the beginning.

The presence of relentless standard features and revolutionary craftmanship grants the LS 500h a unique stature in the luxury sedan segment. The sharp looks complemented by plush interiors provide the prestigious LS 500 a rippling effect. It is amazing to see the value package priced considerably lower than the other luxury sedans in the segment. However, the outdated infotainment system and a relatively small rear give further opportunity for LS 500 to improve upon.

What do we recommend?

The Lexus LS 500h may be a good choice for buyers preferring the comfort and upscale feel which Lexus is known for. Though, the hybrid powertrain is neither efficient not powerful enough. Also, the CVT transmission is sluggish. For the price tag, the Lexus LS 500 hybrid isn’t the best choice and is itself responsible for its demise.

2020 Lexus LS 500h hybrid Engine and Performance

7.0/10

The Lexus LS 500h, under the hood, uses three power units which include a 3.5-liter Atkinson-cycle V-6 and two electric motors with a combined output of 354 horsepower. The LS 500h’s heart is mated with a transmission that combines continuously variable operation with four fixed ratios in a single gearbox disguised as 10-speed automatic transmission. These two transmissions are coupled together in series. The fixed-ratio gearing suppresses the CVT feeling.

2020 Lexus LS 500h Engine

The simulated 10-speed automatic transmission is sub-par in terms of gear shifting and feels lost. The sluggish gear response defies the mission of the LS. The V-6 fires too frequently and makes noises that are not good for a luxury mission of the Lexus.

In Normal drive mode, the engine seems disconnected from the wheels as the LS’s electronic brain dominates the decision of optimum engine speed for the requested acceleration. Though in sport mode, the shifts are slightly more decisive, still one can feel that there is a lot going under the hood. The conventional automatic shift in the rivals such as 745e feels better.

How fast is the Lexus LS 500?

The LS 500h choice of a CVT leaves a big question at the intentions of the automaker. The throttle response is sluggish and gear shifts are slow. The transmission is actually a six-figure gear that hampers the performance of this large luxury sedan. From a standstill, the LS moves on pure electric power responding to the modest accelerator input. The gas engine seems to labor at a speed out of proportion with the driver input.

2020 Lexus LS 500h Acceleration

The rear-wheel-drive configuration adds more punch but in wet-conditions or on an undulating track an AWD is advisable. The RWD also lowers down the torque steer.

Lexus claims that this 4850-pound hybrid sedan accelerates to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds which makes it 0.3 seconds slower to the BMW 745e. The Volvo S90 offers phenomenal torque figures which will bring an unprecedented thrill as you push the gas paddle.

How do the brakes perform on the LS 500h?

The Lexus luxury sedan is equipped with 14-inch ventilated discs in front and 13.1-inches ventilated discs in the rear. The brakes feel confident without showing a selfish desire.

The BRAKING SYSTEM of Lexus LS 500 comprises of following:

  • four-sensor, four-channel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)
  • Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD)
  • Brake Assist

How are the ride quality and handling of Lexus LS 500h?

The Lexus flagship defines luxury with its velvety sedans being a composed and disciplined affair. The LS swallows almost all bumps with the available air suspension. With the standard coil spring, linear solenoid shock absorbers, and stabilizer bars, the ride of Lexus LS can be best described as pampering. The steering is light but responsive enough, and the well-tuned, regenerative brakes aren't overly grabby, providing a smooth and relaxed driving experience.

The Sport and Sport plus configurations stiffen up the chassis but performance still remains far from enthralling. LS hybrid doesn’t deliver a sporty driving experience but comfort is likely. The ride and handling of the bimmer surely will bring joy in the drive.

2020 Lexus LS 500h hybrid Fuel Economy

4.0/10

The hybrid technology brings efficiency at the forefront, more than the performance. The LS 500h is no different. The Lexus LS makes use of forced induction and hybrid technology to be fuel-efficient. The LS 500 luxury-sedan scores 19 cities, 30 highway, and 23 combined mpg for rear-wheel-drive models, while opting for all-wheel drive drops those numbers to 18/27/21 mpg. The hybrid does a little bit better, with 23 mpg city and 31 mpg highway ratings with an AWD.

The LS 500h is equipped with a slightly larger fuel tank of 22.2 gallons further enhancing the range both in city and highway as compared to its non-hybrid counterpart. Also, Acura wins the race for better mpg ratings but Lexus LS 500h offers a much wider range in the city as well as on the highway.

2020 Lexus LS 500h hybrid Interior

8.3/10

Before you look at the future, you analyze the past. The previous generation Lexus LS stood true to its Luxury Sedan nomenclature, enjoyed a well-crafted and plush cabin. The Lexus has redefined what luxury stands for. The amalgamation of the traditional native principle of “Omotenashi” with modern technology results in a beautiful fusion that Lexus LS 500 is.

The 2020 Lexus LS 500h has redefined what luxury stands for

The delicately handcrafted Kiriko glass interior door trim and art wood organic trim created by a traditional Takumi craftsman enhances the vibrancy of the LS cabin. The driver-centric interior of Lexus LS has been exemplified by the precision-crafted steering wheel along with adaptive variable air suspension allowing for easy entry-exit and low center-of-gravity.

How good is the infotainment system of Lexus LS 500h?

Every coin has two sides. The Lexus LS 500 comes with a car-load of technology features but the finicky infotainment controls aren’t engaging. The good part about LS 500 technology and infotainment includes a standard navigation system with a 12.3-inch high-definition display. The high-resolution split-screen multimedia display provides simultaneous access to audio or climate controls and various systems. The voice-activated navigation system and language options of English, French, and Spanish complement it.

The irking behavior of the infotainment touchpad diverts the driver’s attention while on the road. Also, the complexity to learn “how to use the multimedia” may take some time. The Lexus LS brings in more features but lacks the precise usability where it allows its rivals to take the lead.

  • Lexus Enform app suite 2.0
  • Apple car play and Amazon Alexa integration

How spacious is the cargo of LS 500h?

In the hybrid segment, this large luxury sedan offers a large trunk (15.2 cubic feet), with a wide opening for easy cargo loading. The trunk opens wide with hands-free trunk access activated by waving your foot under the bumper apart from a button on the key fob, on the trunk lid and next to the steering wheel. The convenience is amplified by the low lift-height which enables easy trunk access for a bulkier load.

Lexus LS 500 Sedan Vs BMW 745e

The BMW 7-series comes with stong engine options including a plug-in hybrid and a turbo V12, giving ample options for buyers as per the requirement. The ride quality for both Bimmer and Lexus is supple and impervious to poor road surfaces. The Lexus LS has a cramped rear, which the bimmer overcomes. Also, the BMW 745e offers fine-tuned transmission along with abundant standard equipment including safety technology. The LS is quite unique in terms of interior and exterior craftsmanship but the german rival offers exceptional driving dynamics with uncomparable technology.

2020 BMW 745e

Lexus LS 500 Sedan Vs Acura RLX

The Acura RLX is priced much lower in the segment, so is the features and performance. The Acura trails the trademark design and construction of the Lexus. The LS 500h interior cabin is impeccable and offers the luxury beyond comparison. For buyers looking for a cheaper hybrid sedan that offers quiet and comfortable interiors along with ample space for the family but impoverish fuel efficiency, Acura may be the right choice. The value package that Lexus LS offers enhances the driving experience to all-new levels.

2020 Acura RLX

Lexus LS 500 Sedan Vs Volvo S90

The Lexus LS hallmark design, comfort, and drivability announce the 500h strongly on the hybrid luxury sedan segment. The Volvo S90 fairs similar to the LS 500h when it comes to seat comfort and impressive interior material used. Both come standard with a wide array of convenience and safety features. Though the LS 500h offers agile handling with a light steering, it suffers from the lack of driving engagement. Among the two, Lexus will be slightly superior.

2020 Volvo S90

2020 Lexus LS 500h hybrid Final Verdict

The 2020 model year Lexus LS 500 is built impeccably and built to last. A luxury sedan that offers a value package and practicality, top-notch reliability, attention to detail, safety and convenience features, comfort, low depreciation value, and relatively reasonable pricing leads the pros more than the cons. The not-so-good features are the lack of engagement in the drive and frustrating infotainment controls, sub-par fuel efficiency of a hybrid and confused transmission. The pros, however, outweigh the cons. If budget isn’t a matter of concern the LS is a no brainer.
