Overall Rating

The LC was introduced as the spiritual successor to Lexus’s halo car, the LFA. but unlike the LFA which aimed to take on some of the biggest names in the supercar industry, the LC aims to take on a different approach. Unlike its predecessor, the LC is a true blue Grand Tourer and boy are we happy to say that Lexus has nailed it with the LC 500. It might not be the world's best GT car and it does not pretend to be one either. Instead, it brings its own character into the game which is what works in favor of this Japenese masterpiece.

The LC 500h is without a doubt, one of the cleverest cars ever made, courtesy of a state of the art engine and powertrain setup that makes use of state of the art electronic wizardry to combine its two motors and two transmissions in perfect harmony to deliver a driving experience which can rival the biggest luxury brands in the industry in terms of sheer refinement.

The LC 500h’s drivetrain can be best described as a modern-day technological marvel. This hybrid Grand Tourer makes use of two engines and two transmissions and combines them in complete harmony to deliver a driving experience like no other. 

2020 Lexus LC 500h hybrid  has 3.6L Engine

The Multi-Stage Hybrid drivetrain makes use of a 3.5L V6 engine combined with an electric motor to deliver a combined output of 354 horsepower which is delivered to the rear wheels through a complex transmission setup which uses a 4-speed torque converter unit in conjunction with a CVT which simulates six more steps which enables this setup to effectively simulate and act like a 10-speed transmission.

This complex drivetrain isn’t ballistic by any means but it is a highly capable drivetrain. The two transmission and two motors manage to work without causing any ruckus and deliver a ride that is undeniably one of the most refined not just in this segment but also in the industry. 

The V6 isn’t the most exciting engine choice especially in a GT car that looks this good but it is plenty fast and is extremely refined which is a surprise considering the fact that this engine is straight out of a popular family saloon car.

The electric motor is also quite helpful especially when it comes to improving the LC’s acceleration figures due to the instant torque delivery but the best thing about this hybrid motor is the MPG figures that its capable of achieving in everyday situations which can even put some economy cars to shame. 

The hybrid power plant also lets the LC 500h drive in pure EV mode which makes it a neighbor-friendly car something that the V8 powered LC 500 si not but if its performance and raw driving pleasure that you are seeking that you will be better off with the 500h’s V8 twin.

How fast is it?

This LC is not going to win any awards for mind-numbing 0 to 60 figures despite the dual-motor power train which is similar to the once used by the McLaren P1 and the La Ferreri.

With a 0-60 time of 4.8 seconds, the LC ain't no slouch but its not exciting either but if you look at the larger picture, the LC isn’t built for the quarter-mile or destroying track records, its meant to effortlessly cruise at motorway speed without endangering the fate of this planet or killing more endangered species by effectively reducing its carbon footprint courtesy its clever hybrid drivetrain.

How well does it stop?

The LC’s breaks aren’t as sharp as its body lines. The breaks might have the numbers going in its favor when 13.3 inch and 12.1-inch rotors for the front and rear respectively,

but the size does not help with the feedback department as the brakes feel wooden at most points which could do with some TLC.

The hybrid LC isn’t required to use brakes as big as its V8 powered sibling due to two reasons. The first being the fact the hybrid LC is slower than its V8 sibling and second being the fact that the electric motor also brings in regenerative braking which effectively uses the electric motor as a brake which also recharges the batteries in the process. 

How well does it embrace the road?

The ride of the LC is sublime, to say the least, with its electronic wizardry which includes a limited-slip differential and low center of gravity, the LC 500h does manage to hold its ground quite well. The suspension setup onboard the LC 500h is arguably one of the most comfortable and sublime iterations of an adaptive suspension setup which can rival and even excel many of the luxury cars in the market featuring state of the art air suspension setup.

The suspension setup is tuned to absorb most of the undulations and irregularities that the roads can throw at it to deliver an experience that only a Rolls-Royce or a Bently would be able to match.

The combined fuel efficiency figures that the LC 500h is capable of delivering can rival most modern-day economical family cars that are designed to be as fuel-efficient as possible. The hybrid powertrain also lets the LC potter around town in full electric mode which makes it ideal for those who want the sensibility of a hybrid but are looking for something with a little more sex appeal than the Prius.

The LC 500h’s interiors can be best described as fine-crafted automotive origami. Each panel looks meticulously put together and touches to make it stand out from other Lexus products are very evident. 

Everything from the door handle to the layered panel on the door cards looks like the work of a futuristic visionary. It might not be the most practical or ergonomic but it surely is one of the prettiest interiors we have come across in anything with wheels.

The rear bench onboard the LC 500h is best left alone or at best left for child seats or toddlers as anyone with projections resembling legs might have an issue sticking to the back seats. The front seats, however, are quite comfortable and feature seat heating and ventilation apart from the standard electronic adjustment, but what might come as a surprise to some is the fact that the LC misses out on massaging seats which is a shame considering the LC’s GT credentials and its price tag.

The LC might be packed with tech but getting the hang of it might take some expert guidance from the folks dressed in white lab coats from NASA. The infotainment features a high res widescreen display as expected from a high-end luxury Grand Tourer such as the LC, but that where the good news ends for this infotainment as the touchpad setup is redundant and takes ages to get used to, even after that it is not at all intuitive to use. The only saving grace for this infotainment setup has to be the fabulous Mark and Levenstein surround sound system.

How much cargo can it store?

A Grand Tourer is only expected to perform a certain set of tasks which usually involves taking its rich owners on cross-continental journeys with enough space to carry their Louis Vitton duffle bags along with space for a set of Golf Clubs depending on the occasion. The LC 500, however, fails to tick this box with its poor cargo capacity courtesy a lousy 4.7 cubic feet cargo bay which is even lower than the V8 powered LC 500 as the heavy battery packs eat into the boot floor and the tailgate opening is too narrow to fit any symmetrically made mid-sized suitcase.

The Design of the LC 500h looks like it will feel right at home in the sequel to Back to the future. The LC 500 is one of those rarities of the auto industry that managed to get from concept to production stage without sacrificing any of its radical design elements, giving us an exact version of the concept vehicle in production spec.

Starting with the LC’s front facia, the spindle shape grill placed in the middle of the wide-body gives the LC 500h, tonnes of presence. The Lights on the LC 500h are probably the best representation of headlights in the automotive business. The triple projector setup with the LED DLRs merging into the body is modern automotive art at its best. The side profile is simple and uncluttered but the bold creases make an everlasting impression on whoever lays eyes on this magnificent machine.

The rear profile of the LC is straight out of 2120 and that is largely due to the use of the 3D hologram style tail lamps which is nothing close to what we have seen from the automotive industry. The quad exhaust tips are blended seamlessly into the two squared out exhaust tips which look like an aesthetic extension to the vertically slatted scoops in the bumper which also happen to house the LED turn indicators.

The LC is offered with three different wheel sizes to choose from which range from a 19inch all the way up to 21inch spindle style chrome wheels with black accents and they feel right at home in the LC 500h and add to the vehicle’s futuristic theme.

The only way to distinguish the 500h from the V8 powered LC 500 is the blue “h” badging at the back of the vehicle and the Lexus logo which features blue surrounds in this iteration.
