The Lexus GX 460 is a full-size luxury SUV that has always been quite synonymous with its indestructive build, top-notch reliability, and unmatched off-road performance. Available for sale at a base MSRP of $53,450 and coming in with the same 3 trim configurations, similar to the outgoing 2020 model, the 2021 Lexus GX 460 manages to get only minor updates for this model year. The main changes are to the interior, which now comes with the powered third-row seat and a Mark Levinson premium audio system. Along with that, the 2021 GX 460 also gets the heated and powered tilt & telescopic steering wheel for the higher trims. The Amazon Alexa integration is on board too.

Even though the car sees a few changes to the interior tech and features, the mechanicals remains unchanged, as it retains the same 4.6L naturally aspirated V8 motor mated to the 6-speed automatic transmission, putting out 301 hp and 329 lb-ft of torque. The 4WD drivetrain is offered as standard with all the trims too. This makes the 2021 Lexus GX 460 one of the best of the segment for towing, as it can tow a maximum of 6,500 lbs. With the rising competition from the likes of the 2021 Mercedes Benz GLS 450, 2021 BMW X7, and the 2021 Lincoln Navigator, we will find out how well the 2021 Lexus GX 460 stacks up against the rivals, in this in-depth review.

The 2021 Lexus GX is an off-road warrior with a dash of sophistication, but lags in everyday use. - Thecarconnection

The 2021 Lexus GX 460 is the only offering of the segment that comes with a V8 motor under the hood. As a result, this SUV turned out to be one of the best off-roaders of the segment, which can also be attributed to the sophisticated 4WD drivetrain. All of this helps the car, which weighs close to 5,126 lbs, to come out with a 0-60 mph time of 7.2 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 15.6 seconds. However, the combined gas mileage of 16 MPG is identical to the outgoing 2020 model and is the lowest of the lot. When it comes to the safety and driver-assistance features, the features like automated emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, etc are offered as standard.

The 2021 Lexus GX 460, which is available for sale at a base MSRP of $53,450, can also be leased or financed, depending on the buyer's choice. This SUV can be leased out for a monthly payment of $674, which is for a 36-month term with a down payment of $3,069. The car can also be financed for a monthly payment of $918, which is for a 60-month term with a 1.9% APR. We would also like to mention that the car offers a 5-year cost of ownership of $68,050, which is the lowest of the premium full-size luxury SUV segment. The miles per dollar ratio of 3.94 is one of the highest of the segment too. Both of this makes the 2021 GX 460 one of the easiest car to live with.

It comes standard with a power-operated third-row of seats and a Mark Levinson premium stereo system. - Caranddriver

The 2021 Lexus GX 460 is offered in 3 trim configurations, namely base, premium, and luxury. Available for sale at a base MSRP of $53,450, the 2021 Lexus GX 460 retains the same powertrain as the outgoing 2020 model, which is a 4.6L naturally aspirated V8 motor putting gout 301 hp and 329 lb-ft of torque. When it comes to the exterior design, the 6 exterior colors, automatic LED headlights with LED DRLs, 19" alloy wheels wrapped in 265/55R19 tires (Luxury trim), LED taillights, roof rack rails, illuminated running boards, and many more are offered as standard. The design also sees no major changes from the outgoing 2020 model

The 2021 Lexus GX 460's interior can be had in 4 standard colors, along with 8 other optional interior and upholstery shades. 2021 Lexus GX 460 Buying Advice

Of the three trim configurations on offer, the base trim, which is offered for an MSRP of $53,450, turned out to be the most value for money offering for the segment, as it comes with all the essential features as standard, like the 18" alloy wheels, automatic LED headlights with LED DRLs, heated and powered side mirrors, heated and powered seats, 9-speaker audio system, and 8" touchscreen infotainment system. With only a single powertrain available, performance across the range is pretty much the same. - Carbuzz

The 2021 Lexus GX 460 retains the old 4.6L naturally aspirated V8 of the outgoing 2020 model, giving out a decent 301 hp and 329 lb-ft of torque. This motor comes mated to a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission with sequential shift control. The full-size SUV also comes with a 4WD drivetrain, which helps it to conquer tough off-road terrains with ease. Along with that, it offers a maximum towing capacity of 6,500 lbs too.

The 2021 Lexus GX 460 comes equipped with the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension system that boosts traction while off-roading. The rugged body on frame construction coupled with a capable suspension setup and impressive ground clearance of 8.1" helps the car to be the best off-roading machine of the segment. However, the on-road behavior was not as good as the rivals. The body roll and understeer were quite high. The vertical movement was also present, irrespective of the speed of the vehicle.

Coming with the naturally aspirated V8 motor, the 2021 GX 460 managed to give out a 0-60 mph time of 7.2 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 15.6 seconds. When going flat out, the car does a top speed of 111 MPH. With 13.3" front rotors and 12.3" rear rotors, the 2021 Lexus GX 460, which is available for sale at a base MSRP of $53,450, managed to give out a 60-0 mph braking distance of 133 feet, which is not the best of the segment.

The 2021 Lexus GX 460 turned out to be the least powerful offering of the segment, even though it comes with the V8 motor under the hood. This is followed by the 2021 BMW X7 with 355 hp and the 2021 Mercedes Benz GLS 450 with 362 hp. However, the 2021 Lincoln Navigator topped the chart in the performance front, putting out 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. The 0-60 mph time was also the best for the 2021 Navigator, which did it in 5.2 seconds. This is followed by the 2021 GLS 450 with a time of 5.5 seconds and the 2021 BMW X7 with a time of 5.6 seconds.

The GX won't win any awards for fuel economy. According to the EPA, this all-wheel-drive SUV achieves mileage of just 15/19 mpg city/highway. - Caranddriver

With no changes to the powertrain, in comparison to the outgoing 2020 model, the 2021 Lexus GX 460 managed to come out with identical gas mileage as well. This full-size luxury SUV offered a city gas mileage of 15 MPG and a highway gas mileage of 19 MPG, both of which equates to combined gas mileage of 16 MPG.

With a 19-gallon fuel tank capacity, the 2021 Lexus GX 460 offers a city range of 285 miles, a highway range of 361 miles, and a combined range of 304 miles. With no other powertrain options on offer, the 2021 Lexus GX 460 is clearly not the best choice if you value fuel efficiency.

In comparison, the 2021 Mercedes Benz GLS 450 topped the chart in terms of gas mileage and tank range on offer, which is followed by the 2021 BMW X7, both of which gave out 21 MPG of combined gas mileage. The 2021 Navigator also gave out a better 18 MPG of combined gas mileage.

2021 Lexus GX 460 Interior

8.5/10

When you step into a Lexus, you expect to be wowed, but the GX's advanced age leaves a lot to be desired. - Edmunds

Available for sale at a base MSRP of $53,450, the 2021 Lexus GX 460 sees no major changes to the design of the interior. It retains the same 4 colored interior and upholstery, with 8 other optional interior and upholstery colors, which can be had if you opt for the optional packages. This cabin also gets all the bells and whistles like heated and powered seats, leather upholstery, 3-zone automatic climate control system, and many more as standard. The cabin is designed quite well too, making it ergonomic for both the driver. The leather, gloss black inserts, and silver and chrome accents do highlight the cabin, making it look and feel decently premium.

The 2021 Lexus GX 460 is a 7-seater full-size SUV and that makes it a versatile option of the segment. Even though it can accommodate 7 passengers, we found the space inside to be quite lackluster in comparison to the rivals. The front row offered 38" headroom and 41.7" legroom, both of which were mediocre for the segment. The second-row space was mediocre as well, and the passengers would not be happy with the terrible shoulder room on offer, making it quite claustrophobic. The third-row space was the worst of the segment, especially the legroom and headroom on offer, making it only suitable for kids. The cargo capacity of 11.6 cu ft is the worst of the segment too.

We were quite disappointed with the mediocre space on offer from the 2021 GX 460. The seats were also not as comfortable as the rivals like the 2021 BMW X7 and the 2021 GLS 450, both of which offered softer cushioning and better under-thigh support. The 2021 Lincoln Navigator trumped the 2021 GX 460 in all three rows, in terms of space, making it a much better offering of the segment. The 2021 GLS and the 2021 X7 also had better interior space. When it comes to the cargo space, the 2021 Navigator topped the chart, which is followed by the 2021 X7 and the 2021 GLS 450. The infotainment duties of the 2021 GX 460 are handled by the 8" touchscreen infotainment system and the audio duties by the 9-speaker audio system.

Even though the infotainment system wasn't the most intuitive and refined of the systems, especially in comparison to the Germans, it still managed to offer few connectivity features like Amazon Alexa integration, Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth, etc. The display quality and touch sensitivity were pretty average for the segment it comes in. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are missed out too. However, the 9-speaker audio system turned out to be quite impressive, with clear vocals and excellent bass. The optional Mark Levinson 17-speaker audio system is a great option for audiophiles too. Some of the interior and infotainment features on offer are:

  • Heated and powered seats
  • Leather upholstery
  • Sunroof
  • 4 interior colors
  • 3-zone automatic climate control system
  • Heated and powered steering wheel
  • Leather and wooden steering inserts
  • 8" touchscreen infotainment system
  • Amazon Alexa integration
  • 9-speaker audio system
  • Optional Mark Levinson audio system

A rugged off-roader with a soft side, the 2021 Lexus GX 460 is an old-school seven-seat SUV loaded up with luxury. - Thecarconnection

The first thing that strikes you on viewing the 2021 Lexus GX 460 is the impressive height of 74.2" and the ground clearance of 8.1", making it look quite imposing, especially from the front view. The quintessential Lexus grille coupled with the automatic LED headlights with LED DRLs, chrome grille elements, and the striking hood line adds to the visual appeal. Coming in with 6 exterior colors, the 2021 Lexus GX 460, which is offered for sale at a base MSRP of $53,450, also has more road presence than the Germans and the Americans that are offered in the same segment.

The side view of the 2021 Lexus GX 460 is highlighted by the fender flares and the squared out wheel arches which occupy the 18" alloy wheels for the base trim and the 19" alloy wheels wrapped in 265/55R19 tires for the Luxury trim. The subtle character lines coupled with the roof rails, blacked-out pillars, and the macho-looking side steps all add to the butch off-road-ready SUV character. The rear of the 2021 Lexus GX 460 stands out due to the clear lens LED taillights, silver-colored skid plate, integrated roof spoiler, shark fin antenna, and chrome inserts, all of which make it look sporty.

Even though the 2021 Lexus GX 460 looks more imposing and butch than the rivals from the same segment, all of them came out with superior exterior dimensions. The 2021 Lincoln Navigator topped the chart in terms of length, width, and height. It also had the best in class ground clearance, which is followed by the 2021 BMW X7. However, it is the 2021 Mercedes Benz GLS that took the crown for having the best wheelbase of the segment, which was more than 12" than that of the 2021 GX 460. Some of the exterior features on offer with the 2021 Lexus GX 460 are:

2021 Lexus GX 460 Safety

8.0/10

Every Lexus GX comes equipped with the basics - ABS, EBD, traction and stability control, and an impressive ten airbags - Carbuzz

The 2021 Lexus GX 460 hasn't been crash-tested by both the NHTSA and IISH yet. Even the outgoing 2020 model has also not been crash-tested. However, with the construction entirely happening in high tensile steel, the 2021 GX 460 offers excellent build quality, which will help the passengers to be safe while in a crash.

The 2021 Lexus GX 460 also comes with a long list of safety and driver-assistance features, all of which are offered as standard. Some of these driver-assistance features offered are automated emergency braking systems with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. Some of the other safety features on offer are:

  • Airbags

2021 Lexus GX 460 vs 2021 Lincoln Navigator

The 2021 Lincoln Navigator is a full-size SUV that is offered for sale at a base MSRP of $76,185. Even though it is much more expensive than the 2021 GX 460, it managed to trump the 2021 GX 460 on almost all fronts. It comes with a much more powerful turbocharged motor, gave out the best in class interior space and acceleration, and offered superior gas mileage too. The equipment and features on offer are better as well.

2021 Lexus GX 460 vs 2021 BMW X7

The 2021 BMW X7 also turned out to be a much superior proposition, in comparison to the 2021 Lexus GX 460, especially due to the better performance, faster acceleration, and a more upmarket and plush interior. The gas mileage and trunk space are better too. However, the 2021 GX 460 comes ahead in the reliability and towing capacity on offer. It is also a much better performer in the off-roads. Along with that, the base MSRP of $53,450 is cheaper than the 2021 X7 by more than $20,000.

2021 Lexus GX 460 vs 2021 Mercedes Benz GLS 450

The 2021 Mercedes Benz GLS 450 would be our pick of the lot if you have a budget of more than $75,000. It offers the most opulent of the cabins, has superior engine performance and acceleration, and turned out to be better in terms of tank range and gas mileage too. The long list of standard interior features and equipment coupled with excellent interior space are bonuses, in comparison to the 2021 GX 460. However, the towing capacity, reliability, and off-road-ability would be better for the 2021 GX 460.

2021 Lexus GX 460 Final Verdict

Available for a base MSRP of $53,450, the 2021 Lexus GX 460 manages to come out as the most value for money offering of the full-size luxury SUV segment. It also gets all the safety and driver-assistance features as standard along with many interior features too. We also like the rugged exterior design and unmatched off-road performance. The reliability is also a strong forte of the manufacturer. However, the mediocre interior space, outdated interior design, and uncomfortable seats will be deal-breakers to many. The mediocre gas mileage is a bummer too. Hence, if you are alright with these major downsides, the 2021 GX 460 should be on your shortlist.
