The 2021 Range Rover Sport SVR is for a distinctive class of luxury SUV buyers—one who's looking for something with character and a monstrous V-8 engine. The Rover Sport Lineup has aged well and still happily combines typical Land Rover off-road prowess with a more fun-to-drive attitude than the regular Range Rover, and an opulent cabin remains its highlight.

The people at SVO(Special Vehicle Operations) have made the SVR nothing less than the most convincing Land Rover in the company's history generating more than 550 horsepower. The 2021 Range Rover Sport SVR range kicks off with the SE priced from $115,500. At the other end of the spectrum, the all-new SVR Carbon Edition has a starting price of $130,000.

Slightly smaller and more agile than the regular Range Rover, the Range Rover Sport offers similar luxury and cachet with a less painful price tag. This allowed the more prominent models to move further upmarket, while the Sport competed with cars like the Porsche Cayenne Turbo and BMW X6 M

2021 Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR SUV Features

8.0/10

Land Rover offers the Range Rover Sport in a wide variety of trim levels for 2021. All offer an impressive mix of luxury and performance. For the Range Rover Sport SVR, there's a new Carbon Edition range-topper and only provides cosmetic upgrades.

Even the base SVR has access to upgrades that can send the price soaring towards $150,000, with options like the SVR Carbon Fiber Exterior Pack with an exposed carbon fiber hood costing a jaw-dropping $5,200, and the Meridian signature sound system selling for $4,540 extra.

The Range Rover Sport Supercharged's maximum towing capacity is a stout 7716 pounds.

2021 Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR SUV Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

Land Rover’s Range Rover may be one reason why so many people connect SUVs with status. It merged the go-anywhere capability of the original Land Rover with on-road refinement and a characteristic interior. Decades later, it’s still a very polished and competent SUV on asphalt and over marshy land.

Although thinking of spending over $100,000 on a Range Rover, those qualities are anticipated. What isn’t, however, are the endless tales of faulty features and countless repairs. To this day, Range Rovers have fame for unreliability. Which begs the question: are they worth the hype?

2021 Range Rover Sport SVR Ownership Costs and Reliability

Land Rover's reputation for reliability isn't excellent, but the Range Rover Sport is supposed to do better than earlier models. Land Rover has an erratic record for owner satisfaction, but its performance has been somewhat trustworthy.

J.D. Power's rating gives customers an impression of what to foresee when shortlisting new vehicles. The results for new buyers are not satisfying, and Range Rover Sport has an overall rating of 70 out of 100. This is far below its German rivals, which rank around the 90/100 mark in some cases. The further breakdown of the report is as follows:

  • Quality and Reliability - 62/100 (Average)
  • Driving Experience - 81/100 (Great)
  • Resale - 77/100 (Great)
  • Dealership Experience - 65/100 (Average)

Luckily, the Range Rover Sport hasn't been too severely affected by recalls recently, with none for 2020 and just one in 2019, for a crankshaft pulley bolt that could fracture, leading to potential engine failure. In 2018, there were two recalls issued by the NHTSA.

The most expensive variant is the Range Rover Sport SVR, which carries a starting price of $115,500 while the SVR Carbon trim will set you back around $130,500. The average annual repair cost is $1,179, which means it has above average ownership costs.

2021 Range Rover Sport SVR Warranty

The Range Rover Sport comes with a three-year/unlimited-mileage warranty similar to that offered by the majority of rivals. Every new Land Rover is covered by:

  • Four-year/50,000-mile limited
  • 24-hour roadside assistance
  • No complimentary scheduled maintenance

Many owners choose accessories such as towbars with the Range Rover Sport: these are covered by the same new vehicle warranty as well, provided an official Land Rover fits them Approved Service Centre within one month or 1,000 miles.

Miles per dollar Cost

For every mile you’ll make in your Range Rover, you’ll be shelling out $8. This price is still favorable compared with the American Rivals, especially when they’re equipped to the same levels.

2021 Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR SUV Buying Advice

With optional packages like the SVR Carbon Fiber Exterior Pack with an exposed carbon fiber hood costing a jaw-dropping $5,200, the Meridian signature sound system will be $4,540. It is advisable to go with the new Carbon trim if your pockets are deep. Summer performance tires are offered as a no-cost option.

Is buying a used Range Rover Sport SVR a good idea?

Regardless of which model or year you choose, used Range Rovers are infamous for being deceptive and plagued with high repair costs. Even Rovers that seem to be in excellent or ‘like new’ state upon the first glimpse can be lurking some wicked mechanical problems. There are some significant problems you should be informed of if you certainly buy a used Range Rover.

The performance-oriented SVR model launched in 2015 and gained more standard amenities for 2017, including a 10.2-inch touch screen and safety features such as front parking sensors and lane departure warning.

Many new Range Rovers inevitably have to deal with many issues, and while they may not sound too bad at first, you can be left dealing with expensive repairs and problems that don’t end up saving you any money in the long run.

2021 Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR SUV Engine and Performance

9.0/10

Land Rover can’t let BMW, Audi, Mercedes-AMG, and Porsche have to have all the fun. Thus, the SVR marshals a staggering 542bhp from its supercharged 5.0-liter V8 engine and adopts a slew of mechanical and dynamic additions to supplement the extra horsepower. Every Range Rover Sport comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission. This ZF unit is slick-shifting and discreet.

The SVR makes a lovely noise and feels incredible with vicious passing power. If the mood hits you can take this $100,000 SUV off the battered path, there are modes for snow, mud, sand, and rock crawling. The Sport Supercharged grasps the road tightly when cornering.

As the Range Rover Sport has the biggest powertrain among all, it produces the most significant numbers. However, the Porsche Cayenne Turbo and BMW X6 M produce substantial torque with the smaller capacity powertrain. The Maserati Levante stays at the last spot in terms of performance.

2021 Range Rover Sport SVR Acceleration and Braking performance

The SVR lapped the Nurburgring in eight minutes and 14 seconds, and it will shuttle to 60 in only 4.3 seconds and can attain a top speed of 176 mph. Large vented disk brakes do a great job of bringing this bulky SUV to a halt.

Despite having an extra 700kg curb weight, the SVR Sport's one-way 0-60mph time is just 0.2sec behind Jaguar's F-Type R, yes, an out and out sports car. When measured against the Porsche Macan Turbo and BMW X6 M, the Range Rover falls a little short, but it will not be noticeable in the real world. The Maserati Levante also comes in the same ballpark.

2021 Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR SUV Fuel Economy

3.0/10

Not surprisingly, the supercharged V8 places a more substantial burden on the pocket, returning 15/20/16 mpg, with the SVR performance model. All other Range Rover Sport versions have a 27.6-gallon gas tank, and SVR's range is around 440 miles. Naturally, V8 Range Rover Sports will be expensive to run, but the six-cylinder models won't be far behind.

It's hard to enjoy the emotional satisfaction of a supercharged V-8 without grieving at the fuel pump. Still, the Sport SVR is about as practical as rivals such as the Porsche Cayenne Turbo and the BMW X6 M.

2021 Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR SUV Interior

9.9/10

Like all Range Rovers, this SVR’s cabin is a sumptuous pleasure, outfitted in buttery leathers, and emphasized with elegant brushed metal bits. It’s a bold design with broad horizontal elements adorned by the big console. You will get a 20-way adjustable, massaging front seats and four-zone automatic climate control. Although the Range Rover Sport isn’t quite as large as the flagship Range Rover, the interior is still highly flexible and family-friendly.

In the first two rows, the headroom and legroom are excellent for even taller occupants, and the seats themselves are well-padded yet also supportive. You will not want to put a third-row in the SVR and Range Rover doest even provide one.

The boot is practical, and the fold-flat rear seats mean it's easy to make up for more space. There's 27.5 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats, and 59.5 cubes with these seats folded down The Sport doesn’t have the famous split tailgate of the large Range Rover, but it makes up for this with a gesture control boot opening function.

How’s the 2021 Range Rover Sport SVR’s infotainment system?

The Range also finally has a pin-sharp digital gauge cluster, and Jaguar Land Rover's latest dual-touchscreen infotainment is slick if a little glitchy. Entitled Touch Pro Duo, the Range Rover Sport's infotainment system utilizes two 10-inch touchscreens positioned in the center of the dashboard. It's user-friendly with intuitive menus and clean graphics.

Standard infotainment features include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, navigation, a Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth connectivity, HD Radio, and SiriusXM satellite radio. The base model has an eight-speaker enhanced audio system, while a Meridian unit with 13 speakers is equipped with higher trims.

The years have been generous to the Range Rover Sport. It still looks fresh, vibrant, and has loads of road presence. The Range Rover Sport is colossal, even if it's not as big as a full-size Range Rover. It is 4,850mm long, a hefty 2,073mm wide and 1,780mm tall: there aren’t many cars on the road more than two meters wide and nearly 1.8 meters tall.

2021 Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR SUV

The new Carbon Edition features carbon fiber accents throughout, including on the center section of the hood. Carbon fiber is also used for some of the cabin accents and the engine cover. Completing the look is a set of 22-inch light-alloy wheels with a glossy black finish.

2021 Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR SUV Safety

Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has crash-tested the 2020 Range Rover Sport, which is typical among luxury vehicles. Standard driver assistance features include a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and lane-keep assist.

2021 Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR SUV Competition

8.9/10

2021 Range Rover Sport SVR Vs. 2021 Porsche Cayenne Turbo

The Cayenne is an exceptional performer, with a 0-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds, which is almost as quick as the Range Rover SVR. Demanding $126 000, it starts with a similar as the Range Rover Sport, too. Both SUVs are practical, seating five occupants in comfort and with almost identically sized trunks.

2021 Porsche Cayenne Turbo

The Range Rover's cabin feels a bit warmer, while the Cayenne's is more technical and modern in appearance. Overall, the Cayenne has better performance and more involving driving dynamics.

2021 Range Rover Sport SVR Vs. 2021 BMW X6 M

Although loaded with the latest tech, the 2021 X6 M makes it more approachable via its excellent iDrive system, whereas the Range Rover's dual-screen system can be tricky to understand. The BMW is more fun to drive, responding just a bit more buttoned-down through curves than the Range Rover while remaining extraordinarily comfortable.

2021 BMW X6 M

For some shoppers, the Range Rover Sport's effortlessly calm demeanor will still win the day, but the BMW X6 M is a superior luxury SUV.

2021 Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR SUV Final Verdict

7.8/10

No rival better mixes are handling prowess, off-road capability, and an SUV standard of practical plushness. If you want to stand out from the rest of the Range Rover herd, this elephant is the young alpha male. SVR's portfolio matches the off-roading capability of other Land Rovers but gets sportier, more assertive manners on the road, where it will be used most of the time.
