This year we have witnessed the rise of several of the best and sportiest SUVs this industry has ever seen from the likes of Mercedes-Benz, Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin and yet they all quiver in the presence of the 2020 Lamborghini Urus. And as it is from the Italian(raging bull) thoroughbred, it has got to be the sportiest SUV to ever have blessed us with its serene presence.

Italy's very own raging bull-The 2020 Lamborghini Urus

The days of people taking their SUVs off-road are gone. These vehicles are more of a status symbol now. Lamborghini joined the SUV race a couple of years back with the Urus and yet it still takes the other SUVs back to school with its superb comfort, grandeur, and extreme off-road capabilities. They marketed it as a “Super SUV” or “SSUV”. While it has been able to justify the name tag with its mind-blowing performance, it has been somewhat controversial because of its looks. And as it is triple the price of other sporty SUVs, let's tread further and see if it's triple the car.

Overall Rating

The 2020 Lamborghini Urus is powered by a 4.0-liter V8 engine assisted by a twin-turbo setup. An 8-speed automatic transmission completes the drivetrain which can produce a maximum of 641 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. The numbers are simply mind-boggling especially when you take into consideration that the Urus is not a sports car but an SUV. Producing a machine that has the soul of a sports car and the mind of a typical SUV, Lamborghini has stepped ahead of the game with the Urus. The machine is highly potent when it comes to sprinting on tracks, and at the same time, possesses great capabilities of measuring rough terrains.

Priced at $207,326, the 2020 Lamborghini Urus is surely on the expensive side. That said, once you have experienced the sheer excitement this SUV packs and the long lineage of heritage that the badge carries, you won't mind shelling money on it. When all is said and done, this Gladiator takes the fight to the Colosseum with some renowned Titans of the segment such as the Bentley Bentayga and the two British brutes- Land Rover Range Rover SV Autobiography and the Aston Martin DBX.

2020 Lamborghini Urus Engine and Performance

9.9/10

The 2020 Lamborghini Urus is powered by a 4-liter V8 engine assisted by a twin-turbo setup. The engine is capable of pumping out an impressive 641 horses at 6,600 RPM and 627 lb-ft of torque at 2,250 RPM. This wide powerband results in the Urus being able to tackle both highways and city traffic with ease.

Mated to the Audi RS Q8 borrowed V8 is an 8-speed automatic gearbox unit. The gearbox feels smooth and efficient. Put your foot down and the Urus downshifts in the blink of an eye. Unlike the single-clutch unit in the Aventador, the Urus feels very smooth and linear with its gear shifts. With such a spiritual successor or sibling, the Urus is bound to have an engine that is nothing short of impressive.

A 4.0-L twin-turbocharged V8 that carries the 5-ton Urus to unimaginable speeds

In terms of power delivery and engine feel, the Urus feels very linear and constant. The engine makes a deep growl at idle but as you go down on the accelerator pedal, the Urus screams and shouts like nobody’s business. This powertrain is capable of pushing this behemoth of an SUV around 190 miles per hour! This figure becomes even more interesting once you take into consideration the size and weight of the vehicle.

The Land Rover Range Rover SV Autobiography has the largest engine in this bunch. With a supercharged 5-liter V8 motor, the Rover still manages to produce less power than the Urus, even with that Supercharger to carry it. This can be blamed on the fact that the Range Rover is focused more on luxury and comfort rather than being sporty- unlike the Urus.

Even the much anticipated 2020 Aston Martin DBX is powered by a 4-liter twin-turbo V8 capable of producing no less than 542 horses and 516 lb-ft of torque. The Bentley Bentayaga shares the same engine, with the Urus and the DBX. However, the engines are in a different state of tune. Where the Bentley is tuned for comfort and extremely linear power delivery, the Urus is much more brutal and “in your face”.

How fast is the 2020 Lamborghini Urus?

Acceleration is where the Urus shines. The twin-turbo V8 manages the 0-60 MPH dash in just 3.6 seconds. This is a figure that only supercars could achieve until a few years back. Let’s take the Ferrari 458 for example- a full-fledged 2 seater supercar with a mid-mounted engine straight out of Maranello. The 458 took 3.3 seconds to do the 0-60 mph sprint. The Urus- a 5 seater, carrying nearly 5,000 lbs of heft, all-wheel-drive mammoth of an SUV manages to do the 0-60 in just 0.3 seconds more than the 458. It is devilishly quick.

2020 Lamborghini Urus is the fastest SUV in the world

Let’s talk about the quarter-mile drag time. The Urus manages the sprint in 11.4 seconds. To put that into context the LP 700-4 Lamborghini Aventador takes roughly 10.9 seconds to do the same. Modern-day performance SUVs are actually putting supercars to shame.

When compared to the direct rivals, the Urus manages to outrun everyone and that too by a margin. The Range Rover does the 0-60 sprint in 5.4 seconds, which might be slowest in the segment, but considering it's a hefty SUV, it's not bad, not bad at all! The DBX and the Bentley are at par when it comes to 0-60 timings at 4.4 seconds which in itself is pretty impressive. The difference in the acceleration timings can be blamed on the weight of the vehicles.

What about the braking performance of the Urus?

When you have over 600 horses under your hood, you definitely need a proper set of brakes to be able to tame them. The Urus comes equipped with the largest set of brake rotors ever fitted to a production vehicle. Yes, it a fact!

2020 Lamborghini Urus has some proper big shoes to bring it to a halt

This Lambo is equipped with 17.32-inch rotors in the front. Yes, you read it right! In addition to these, the rear rotors are 14.57-inch in diameter. The Urus has some proper big brake rotors. This set of massive brakes manages to bring the 2020 Urus to a stop from 60 miles an hour to dead zero in just 111 feet.

Obviously, the Urus has the largest brake rotors in the bunch and in itself is the hardcore performance-oriented marquee from Italy and hence it has the best stopping distance of the lot. The Bentayga follows behind with 15.8-inch units in the back and 15-inch ones in the front. The Range Rover has the smallest set of brakes with 15-inch rotors in the front and 14.4-inch units in the back. As far as braking distance is concerned, the Range Rover takes 117 feet to get to a complete stop from 60 miles per hour. The tables might turn once Aston Martin lets out with its brake rotors size, but until then the Urus takes the podium here.

What about the driving dynamics of the Lamborghini Urus?

Lamborghini has equipped the 2020 Urus to be more than just a luxury SUV, it's a proper "super SUV". Ever heard of a supercar crossover, we'll try and explain it to you. For starters, the twin-turbo V8 packs all the drama, the air suspension is height adjustable for different riding modes. Had enough with the pops and crackles of the monstrous V8 producing 641 hp, shift it into Strata mode, and the ride is absolutely comfortable, arguably even more than the Bentley Bentayga.

2020 Lamborghini Urus handles like a charm

Skim to the Corsa mode, and then the ride stiffens up and stays flat and controlled around corners. Turning circle radius is absolutely incredible, with wait for it! the rear wheel also turning for about 3 degrees. Lambo has made the perfect recipe consisting of both off-road prowess and around town riding. Obviously off-road wise it may not be as good as the Rover, but the off-road package on the Urus is still pretty decent in Lambo terms. It has the ability to manipulate you into thinking it isn't an SUV, it's as Lamborghini advertised a "Super SUV".

2020 Lamborghini Urus Fuel Economy

6.0/10

When you talk about the Lamborghini, you don’t talk about fuel economy! The 4-liter twin-turbo motor is an absolute gas guzzler. It returns 12 miles to the gallon in the city and 17 on the highway. Combined, the Lambo gives 14 miles to the gallon. Floor the throttle and these numbers will fall even more. Hell, it’s worth it.

None of these vehicles are essentially fuel-efficient- they barely manage to get over the 15 miles per gallon mark (combined). Having said that, this is what is to be expected of these vehicles. The Urus is the worst with 12/17/14 miles per gallon for city, highway and combined respectively. The Rover follows behind with 14/19/16 miles per gallon for city, highway and combined respectively. Surprisingly, the Bentley Bentayga performs the best in terms of fuel economy with 14/20/16 miles per gallon. These figures can be attributed to the weight and performance on offer.

2020 Lamborghini Urus Interior

9.0/10

The Urus can be opted to be a five-seater with a bench seat in the back. Lamborghini has ensured that the Urus looks and feels astonishing even inside. It offers a combination of exotic materials insides like leather, Alcantara, wood, and even carbon fiber. The luxurious and modern cabin space is right up there with some of the industries best such as Maybach and Bentayga.

The front seats offer a lot of space to the passengers. The bolster on the front seats is pretty adequate and figures out how to hold the passengers in place. In this way, when you choose to push the 4-liter, V8 around corners, you won't float all around the vehicle. Finding a perfect driving position is also really simple as the seats offer a lot of adjustments. The steering, which although gives lesser feedback at lower speeds is also adjustable for both reach and rake.

2020 Lamborghini Urus has the most sumptuous interior of the lot

Not simply the front seats, even the back seats offer a lot of comfort and adjustment. On the off chance that you choose to go for the captain seats in the back, you'll be more than happy. Indeed, even the back seats are warmed and ventilated. Lamborghini has truly made all the strides with regard to comfort and interior quality.

The Urus figures out how to use interior space extremely well. The all-glass sunroof just makes the cabin feel roomier. What is great is that in spite of having an all glass roof, the Urus offers a lot of headroom to its back seat travelers.

Unfortunately, the exact interior dimensions of the Urus are not available. However, on the inside, the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover SV Autobiography feels the most spacious of the lot, and rightly so as it's the LWB version of the base Autobiography. The Bentayga comes pretty close to the Rover but still has to do with second position even though it offers a better headroom than the Range. Astons are not particularly known for their spacious interiors, and hence we believe that it might sit in between the Bentayga and the Range Rover.

What's there to keep you entertained?

The Lamborghini Urus has an adaptation of Audi's MMI infotainment system which is truly one of the best in the business. Even the driver's information screen is a form of Audi's Virtual Cockpit. All of the screens in the Urus feel extremely sharp and solid and can be utilized to do a large number of functions. There are two screens on the center console one of which is used to control the AC unit. This system is fundamentally the same as the recent generation of Audi vehicles.

2020 Lamborghini Urus has the best infotainment screen in the business

The four-zone climate control is extremely useful and enables every single passenger to set their own temperature and fan speed. The back seat passengers also have their own screen that enables them to change their temperature settings.

Much like Audi vehicles, the Urus additionally gets Google Maps which is essential and simple to use. The Google Maps can also be seen on the driver's display which implies that the driver doesn't have to take his eyes off the street while looking for directions. Other infotainment features on the 2020 Lamborghini Urus include-

  • 1,700-watt, 21-speaker Bang & Olufsen Ultra Premium Audio System
  • 3D view camera
  • Traffic Management
  • Apple CarPlay / Android Auto / Bluetooth
  • AM/FM/DAB Radio services
  • Multi-source rear audio controls

How much cargo can the Urus store?

The 2020 Lamborghini Urus looks huge on the inside and the interior space is also great yet with regards to cargo space in the boot, contenders, for example, the Aston Martin DBX offer greater practicality.

As far as interior storage is concerned, the Urus offers a decent amount. There's a respectable cubby hole in the front seats. It is sufficiently large to hold your cell phone and other individual items such as wallets. For door pockets, the front door pockets are of a decent size.

2020 Lamborghini Urus SUV has a cargo space of 21.8 cu ft

The 3 seater bench seat can be folded in a 40-20-40 manner. The center seat can be folded for carrying long items, for example, surfboards while seating a passenger on either side. With the back seats completely folded down, the Urus has 56 cubic feet of capacity which is sufficient to keep a ton of stuff. However, with the seats in their up position, there is not enough space.

When Lamborghini first came out with the concept of the Urus back in 2012, it raised a lot of eyebrows with its styling. It looked like an Aventador on steroids. The hood had somewhat weird creases and curves that made it look like an alien. The headlights also looked inspired by the Aventador.

When the actual Urus came out in 2017, they had changed a lot of things and one of them was the look of the vehicle. It was a little calmer and more subtle than the concept. Having said that, the Urus is still a Lambo and it lives up to the Lambo design language. It is still full of sharp edges and curves.

2020 Lamborghini Urus SUV Three Quarter View

As far as the front design of the Urus is concerned, it was still controversial with its front camera placement. Apart from that, the Urus looks exactly how a Lamborghini is supposed to look like. When we talk about the side profile of the vehicle, it looks muscular and curvy throughout. The wheel arches complement the complete styling of the Urus. Fitting an SUV with a 23-inch set of wheels is exactly what dreams are made of. Although there was one thing that bugged us a lot and that was for the price of 200 grand, there surely was a lot of fake vents, which considering it was a Lambo was a shame. The tailgate and the rear bumper is accompanied by a stylish set of tail lamps that make the rear look very stylish and modern.

Exterior dimensions don’t really matter with these vehicles- they are big. That is the only way to put it. Yes, it is a little intimidating to drive the Urus around towns but that is the case with each and every other vehicle in this segment. But these dimensions have their own advantages as well. They offer “go-anywhere” confidence. The 8.7-inch ground clearance of the Rover allows you to take the dirt road without even thinking once. It is really impressive how amazing SUVs have gotten in recent times.

2020 Lamborghini Urus Safety

8.5/10

The Urus is definitely one of the fastest SUVs in the world but Lamborghini has not cut any corners when it comes to safety and as expected from a car at this price point, the 2020 Urus is loaded with safety features. The main safety testing facilities have yet not tested the SUV from the Lamborghini lineup and thus at this moment, nothing can be said about how safe it is. The cluster of active and passive safety features provided are nothing short of impressive. Some features included as standard are-

  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • Adaptive Front Lighting
  • Traffic Sign Recognition
  • Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go and Lane Keeping Assist, Highway Assist System
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • Active Blind Spot Assist

2020 Lamborghini Urus Competition

Lamborghini Urus Vs Land Rover Range Rover SV Autobiography

The Land Rover Range Rover SV Autobiography has been around for a very long time now and has been one of the most respected SUVs in the world. You get a strong road presence, heart-thumping performance and tons of space in the Rover. Land Rover after a long time has certainly got a worthy contender that upholds the same balance of performance and sheer luxury as the Urus. The Lamborghini Urus, on the other hand, offers a supercar like performance in the shape of an SUV. It outshines the Rover in any aspect but really falls down when it comes to the off-road capability.

2020 Land Rover Range Rover SV Autobiography

Lamborghini Urus Vs Bentley Bentayga

The Bentley Bentayga has been the epitome of British engineering in an SUV. The Bentayga screams luxury the moment you step inside the cabin. Couple to that its superb design and build quality and what you have on your hands is a remarkable SUV that will leave you smiling always. The Lamborghini Urus, on the other hand, screams performance from the moment you drive it. If performance is what you are looking after, the Lamborghini Urus will suit your bill best but for everything else, it's the Bentayga that should be worth your Cash.

2020 Bentley Bentayga

2020 Lamborghini Urus Final Verdict

If you want performance with plenty of comfort, practicality, tech, and safety, the 2020 Lamborghini Urus can be the perfect all-round vehicle. The only downside- its price. The Urus is much more expensive when compared to the competition. It is so expensive that one might start considering the Bentayga Speed. Having said that, this Lambo performs pretty well overall, especially the driving modes which are an absolute treat. So, if you want a supercar with daily driving abilities, the Urus is the one to go for!

Cons - Not a thing

The best SUV there is. I’m not bragging when I say this but it can beat any sports car in a drag. It is just that good. It fills the void of a car that is powerful enough to beat sports cars and is capable enough to tackle the terrains. I’m not taking it off-roading, but it is still satisfying to know it can do all that if I want it to. It is what Lamborghini said it is- A super SUV. Performance on par with supercars and capability to leave dirt on those supercars. I have never been more happier with any other cars.

Its a Lamborghini

Pros - Unequivocally fast, impeccable road presence, cockpit

Cons - No options for front carbon fiber front grille or exhaust tips, no rear window wiper

I'm not too sure if that's even something you ask for a Lambo. As they say, its a super suv, I can't seem to agree more on this since day one. Driving feels more like a small sports car. Neck breaking acceleration packed in the gas pedal and progressive punch delivered real quick. Gone are the days when mile in a minute used to hold sense.
