The days of people taking there SUVs off-road are gone. These vehicles are more of a status symbol now. Lamborghini joined the SUV race a couple of years back with the Urus. They marketed it as a “Super SUV” or “SUV”. While it has been able to justify the name tag with its mind-blowing performance, it has been somewhat controversial because of its looks.

Expert Review

The 2020 Lamborghini Urus is powered by a 4.0-liter V8 engine assisted by a twin-turbo setup. An 8-speed automatic transmission completes the drivetrain which can produce a maximum of 641 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. The numbers are simply mind-boggling especially when you take into consideration that the Urus is not a sports car but an SUV. Producing a machine that has the soul of a sports car and the mind of a typical SUV, Lamborghini has stepped ahead of the game with the Urus by bridging this hidden gap between a super sports car and an off-road SUV. The machine is highly potent when it comes to sprinting on tracks, and at the same time, possesses great capabilities of measuring rough terrains.

The Lamborghini Urus is available in only one trim. However, Lamborghini offers plenty of customization options to make your Urus just that more personalized.

2020 Lamborghini Urus Engine and Performance

The 2020 Lamborghini Urus is powered by a 4-liter V8 engine assisted by a twin-turbo setup. The engine is capable of pumping out an impressive 641 horses at 6,600 RPM and 627 lb-ft of torque at 2,250 RPM. This wide powerband results in the Urus being able to tackle both highways and city traffic with ease.

Mated to the Audi borrowed V8 is an 8-speed automatic gearbox unit. The gearbox feels smooth and efficient. Put your foot down and the Urus downshifts in the blink of an eye. Unlike the single-clutch unit in the Aventador, the Urus feels very smooth and linear with its gear shifts.

2020 Lamborghini Urus SUV Has a 4.0L, Twin Turbo, V8 Engine

In terms of power delivery and engine feel, the Urus feels very linear and constant. The engine makes a deep growl at idle but as you go down the accelerator pedal, the Urus screams and shouts like nobody’s business. This powertrain is capable of pushing this mammoth of an SUV around 190 miles per hour! This figure becomes even more interesting once you take into consideration the size and weight of the vehicle.

627 lb –ft @ 2,500 – 3,500 rpm

The Land Rover Range Rover SV Autobiography has the largest engine in this bunch. With a supercharged 5 liter V8 motor, the Range still manages to produce less power than the Urus- 557 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. This can be blamed on the fact that the Range Rover is focused more on luxury and comfort than being sporty- unlike the Urus.

The G63 is powered by a 4-liter Bi-turbo V8 capable of producing 557 horses and 516 lb-ft of torque. The Bentley Bentayaga shares the same engine. However, the engines are in a different state of tune. Where the Bentley is tuned for comfort and extremely linear power delivery, the Urus is much more brutal and “in your face”.

Acceleration

Acceleration is where the Urus shines. The twin-turbo V8 manages the 0-60 MPH dash in just 3.6 seconds. This is a figure that only supercars could achieve until a few years back. Let’s take the Ferrari 458 for example- a full-fledged 2 seater supercar with a mid-mounted engine straight out of Maranello. The 458 took 3.3 seconds to do the 0-60 mph sprint. The Urus- a 5 seater all-wheel-drive mammoth of an SUV manages to do the 0-60 just 1/3rd of a second off the Ferrari.

2020 Lamborghini Urus SUV Front View
2020 Lamborghini Urus SUV 0-60 MPH In just 3.6 sec

Let’s talk about the quarter-mile drag time. The Urus manages the sprint in 11.4 seconds. To put that into context the LP 700-4 Lamborghini Aventador takes roughly 10.9 seconds to do the same. Modern-day performance SUVs are actually putting supercars to shame.

When compared to the direct rivals, the Urus manages to outrun everyone and that too by a margin. The Range Rover does the 0-60 sprint in5.4 seconds and the quarter-mile run in 13.1 seconds. The AMG and the Bentley are at par when it comes to 0-60 timings at 4.4 seconds which in itself is pretty impressive. The difference in the acceleration timings can be blamed on the weight of the vehicles. Having said that, the G63 is heavier than the SV but it still manages to perform better than the Range Rover.

Braking and Handling

When you have over 600 horses under your hood, you definitely need a proper set of brakes to be able to tame them. The Urus comes equipped with the largest set of brake rotors ever fitted to a production vehicle. Yes, it a fact!

2020 Lamborghini Urus SUV Front view
2020 Lamborghini Urus SUV Front Brake is 17.3 in

This Lambo is equipped with 17.32-inch rotors in the front. Yes, you read it right! In addition to these, the rear rotors are 14.57-inch in diameter. The Urus has some properly big brake rotors. This set of massive brakes manages to bring Urus to a stop from 60 miles an hour in just 111 feet.

Obviously, the Urus has the largest brake rotors in the bunch. The Bentayga follows behind with 15.8-inch units in the back and 15-inch ones in the front. The AMG has 15.7-inch units in the front and 14.6-inch ones in the back. The Range Rover has the smallest set of brakes with 15-inch rotors in the front and 14.4-inch units in the back. As far as braking distance is concerned, the Range Rover takes 117 feet to get to a complete stop from 60 miles per hour. The braking figures of the Bentayga and the G63 are not available.

2020 Lamborghini Urus Fuel Economy

When you talk about the Urus, you don’t talk about fuel economy! The 4-liter twin-turbo motor is an absolute gas guzzler. It returns 12 miles to the gallon in the city and 17 on the highway. Combined, the Lambo gives 14 miles to the gallon. Floor the throttle and these numbers will fall even more. Hell, it’s worth it.

None of these vehicles are essentially fuel-efficient- they barely manage to get over the 15 miles per gallon mark (combined). Having said that, this is what is to be expected of these vehicles. The G63 is the worst with 13/15/14 miles per gallon for city, highway and combined respectively. The Rover follows behind with 114/19/16 miles per gallon for city, highway and combined respectively. Surprisingly, the Bentley Bentayga performs the best in terms of fuel economy with 14/20/16 miles per gallon. These figures can be attributed to the weight and performance on offer.

2020 Lamborghini Urus Interior

The Urus can be opted to be a five-seater with a bench seat in the back of a four-seater with two separate captain seats with center console. Lamborghini has ensured that the Urus looks and feels astonishing even inside. It offers a combination of exotic materials insides like leather, Alcantara, wood, and even carbon fiber.

The front seats offer a lot of space to the passengers. The bolster on the front seats is pretty adequate and figures out how to hold the passengers in place. In this way, when you choose to push the 4-liter, V8 around corners, you won't float all around the vehicle. Finding a perfect driving position is also really simple as the seats offer a lot of adjustments. The steering is also adjustable for both reach and rake.

Not simply the front seats, even the back seats offer a lot of comfort and adjustment. On the off chance that you choose to go for the captain seats in the back, you'll be more than happy. Indeed, even the back seats are warmed and ventilated. Lamborghini has truly made all the strides with regard to comfort and interior quality.

The seats don't simply offer support and comfort but they are additionally warmed and ventilated-and yes each of the 4 seats is both warmed and ventilated. The Urus figures out how to use to interior space extremely well. The all-glass sunroof just makes the cabin feel roomier. What is great is the way that in spite of having an all glass roof, the Urus offers a lot of headroom to its back seat travelers.

Unfortunately, the exact interior dimensions of the Urus are not available. However, on the inside, the Range Rover feels the most spacious of the lot. The Bentayga comes pretty close to the RR but still has to do with the second position even though it offers a better headroom than the Range. The AMG positions itself between the Betley and the Range Rover in terms of interior space. The Lambo isn’t the most spacious here and sits at the last.

Infotainment System

The Lamborghini Urus has an adaptation of Audi's MMI infotainment system which is truly one of the best in the business. Even the driver's information screen is a form of Audi's Virtual Cockpit. All of the screens in the Urus feel extremely sharp and solid and can be utilized to do a large number of functions. There are two screens on the center console one of which is used to control the AC unit. This system is fundamentally the same as the recent generation of Audi vehicles.

The four-zone climate control is extremely useful and enables every single passenger to set their own temperature and fan speed. The back seat passengers also have their own screen that enables them to change their temperature settings.

Much like Audi vehicles, the Urus additionally gets Google Maps which is essential and simple to use. The Google Maps can also be seen on the driver's display which implies that the driver doesn't have to take his eyes off the street while looking for directions.

Cargo volume

The 2020 Lamborghini Urus looks huge on the inside and the interior space is also great yet with regards to cargo space in the boot, contenders, for example, the Mercedes AMG G63 offer greater practicality.

As far as interior storage is concerned, the Urus offers a decent amount. There's a respectable cubby hole in the front seats. It is sufficiently large to hold your cell phone and other individual items such as wallets. For door pockets, the front door pockets are of a decent size.

The 3 seater bench seat can be folded in a 40-20-40 manner. The center seat can be folded for carrying long items, for example, surfboards while seating a passenger on either side. With the back seats completely folded down, the Urus has 56 cubic feet of capacity which is sufficient to keep a ton of stuff. However, with the seats in their up position, there is not enough space.

When compared to the competition, the Urus performs decently with 21.5 cubic feet of the cargo area. The Bentayga offers the least in the bunch with 17.1 cubic feet. The AMG offers the most space with 34.3 cubes- to add to that, the cargo area of the G63 is boxy and tall that adds to the practicality of the vehicle.

2020 Lamborghini Urus Exterior

When Lamborghini first came out with the concept of the Urus back in 2012, it raised a lot of eyebrows with its styling. It looked like an Aventador on steroids. The hood had somewhat weird creases and curves that made it look like an alien. The headlights also looked inspired by the Aventador.

When the actual Urus came out in 2017, they had changed a lot of things and one of them was the look of the vehicle. It was a little calmer and more subtle than the concept. Having said that, the Urus is still a Lambo and it lives up to the Lambo design language. It is still full of sharp edges and curves.

As far as the front design of the Urus is concerned, it was still controversial with its front camera placement. Apart from that, the Urus looks exactly how a Lamborghini is supposed to look like. When we talk about the side profile of the vehicle, it looks muscular and curvy throughout. The wheel arches complement the complete styling of the Urus. The back of the Urus brings the whole package to a stylish end. The tailgate and the rear bumper is accompanied by a stylish set of tail lamps that make the rear look very stylish and modern.

Exterior dimensions don’t really matter with these vehicles- they are big. That is the only way to put it. Yes, it is a little intimidating to drive the Urus around towns but that is the case with each and every other vehicle in this segment. But these dimensions have their own advantages as well. They offer “go-anywhere” confidence. The 9.5-inch ground clearance of the G63 allows you to take the dirt road without even thinking once. It is really impressive how amazing SUVs have gotten in recent times.

2020 Lamborghini Urus Competition

Lamborghini Urus Vs Mercedes-Benz AMG G63

The Mercedes AMG G63 has been around for a very long time now and has been one of the most respected SUVs in the world. You get a strong road presence, heart-thumping performance and tons of space in the G63. Couple that with a relatively low price tag and what you have is a German mauler that can rip its rivals apart. The Lamborghini Urus, on the other hand, offers a supercar like performance in the shape of an SUV. It outshines the G63 in any aspect but really falls down when it comes to the hefty price point.

Lamborghini Urus Vs Bentley Bentayga

The Bentley Bentayga has been the epitome of British engineering in an SUV. The Bentayga screams luxury the moment you step inside the cabin. Couple to that its superb design and build quality and what you have on your hands is a remarkable SUV that will leave you smiling always. The Lamborghini Urus, on the other hand, screams performance from the moment you drive it. If performance is what you are looking after, the Lamborghini Urus will suit your bill best but for everything else, it's the Bentayga that should be worth your Cash.

2020 Lamborghini Urus Final Verdict

If you want performance with plenty of comfort, practicality, tech, and safety, the Urus can be the perfect all-round vehicle. The only downside- its price. The Urus is much more expensive when compared to the competition. It is so expensive that one might start considering the Bentayga Speed. Having said that, this “640” Lambo performs pretty well overall. So, if you want a supercar with daily driving abilities, the urus is the one to go for!
