The 2020 Lamborghini Aventador SVJ is regarded as the maddest raging bull to roll out of the manufacturing line at Sant’Agata Bolognese. This mad machine is now packing even more power than before coupled with clever aero trickery to make it the quickest production car around the Nurburgring Nordschleife.

For an even more thrilling driving experience, chaps at Lamborghini offer the SVJ as a roadster that exposes the driver to the elements and to that soulful yet angry naturally-aspirated V12 engine which sounds like an orchestra on acid.

Powered by a massive 6.5L V12 engine, the 2020 Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Roadster is positioned above the 2020 Lamborghini Huracan Evo Spyder and is the last hurrah of the Aventador series.

For the 2020 model, the Aventador has all the power in the world, deployed to all four wheels and heavy use of carbon fiber is made to make this beast light on its feet. Scissor doors still don’t fail to impress and this Italian beauty will garner more attention on Hollywood Boulevard than any A-list celebrity thanks to its smashing looks and an exhaust which spits flames and sounds absolutely brutal.

2020 Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Roadster Features

7.0/10

Not that it really matters but the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ roadster comes with a generous feature list for a car of its class. That being said, this is a serious track monster and for superior mechanical performance, the SVJ roadster gets some serious kit. Scissor doors are definitely included! It’s safe to say now that I am obsessed with swanky doors. Some of the key features are listed below:

What do we recommend?

There is only one trim available so you can benefit from Lamborghini's custom-order program and feature modern touches such as navigation and launch control. Even if they've gotten much more civilized in recent times, Lamborghinis have always had a reputation for driving like a proverbial bull in a china shop.

2020 Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Roadster Engine and Performance

9.9/10

The Lamborghini Aventador SVJ is powered by the most powerful series-production V12 engine from Lamborghini. The engine now makes almost 770 hp at a ridiculous 8500 rpm and revs out to absolutely mental 9000 rpm. For this big lump of an engine, these numbers seem totally mind-boggling.

For the engine to make even more firepower than before, it gets a host of upgrades. The naturally-aspirated motor now gets titanium intake valves which are lighter than before which makes the engine that much more responsive. Coupled with that, it also gets a totally revised air intake system and a newly designed dual-barrel Titanium exhaust which sounds EPIC!

The engine now displaces 6.5L and feeds its power to all four wheels via a robotized automated manual gearbox. It’s a single-clutch unit and some might say, is the only chink in the armor of the Aventador since its inception. What it does deliver is a pure and filthy acceleration experience with crazy wacks at upshifts and downshifts which can even unsettle the car while going around a corner. The gearbox is jerky at low speeds but it becomes more civilized as the pace rises. In short, every part of the Aventador wants you to drive it as hard as possible. And when you do that, the SVJ Roadster rewards you with an experience of a lifetime every time you pin the throttle.

How fast is the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Roadster off the line?

Flip the drive to the Corsa mode, left foot on the brake, right foot on the throttle, the gauge cluster says “Thrust mode possible”. Release the brake and off it goes like a rocket engaging full boost. The 2020 Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Roadster is extremely violent off the line.

Power comes in quickly as the engine revs cleanly to 9000 rpm redline. Use the paddles behind the steering wheel to climb up the gears. The whole experience is so encaptivating and the speeds build up rapidly. The Rodster covers the 0-60 mph dash in under three seconds which is blisteringly quick and flat out, the SVJ will happily cruise to 217 mph.

What’s the handling like?

Handling was never the strongest point of the OG Aventador. With the SVJ however, things are changed for good. The 2020 Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Roadster comes equipped with the ALA or the Aerodynamica Lamborghini Attiva system inspired by the Lamborghini Huracan Performante which pushes the inside of the car down towards the tarmac with the help of active vents and blades so that the tires stick better to the asphalt.

2020 Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Roadster Front View

Coupled with the ALA, the Aventador SVJ Roadster is now featured with an advanced and much more technically sound version of their 4-wheel steering system which virtually shortens the wheelbase making this two-tonne beast feel like a small sports car around the twisties.

What about the braking performance?

Stopping the bull is another hectic task which is managed by carbon-ceramic brakes (fixed calipers monoblock in aluminum) with 6 pistons in the front and four-piston in the rear.

2020 Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Roadster Has Front Brake is 15.7 in.

The pedal feedback, however, is a bit complicated and dead for the first few inches and then suddenly the brakes come alive which can take a bit of time to get used to.

It stays extremely stable even under hard braking and inspires you all the more to push it on a track for better lap times. The McLaren 720S Spider is the lightest of the lot and it helps it to come to a halt in the least distance. The Ferrari 812 GTS being a front engine monster, has all the weight upfront and as a result, covers the longest distance in our braking test.

2020 Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Roadster Fuel Economy

6.0/10

If you can bear the astronomical price than fuel economy might not be an issue. As the gasoline dumps into all twelve cylinders and, the riot of internal combustion begins and makes 13.4 mpg combined which is still acceptable. You may get below that if wading through city traffic with occasional pops and crackles for fun.

Noteworthy is the fact that the Ferrari 812 returns 12 mpg in the city. The Aventador is worse still with just 8 mpg in the city. The Mclaren 720S is way ahead in terms of fuel economy than the competition, thanks to a smaller engine, two fewer cylinders, forced induction, and a lower curb weight.

2020 Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Roadster Interior

8.0/10

The new Aventador is focused inside and out. The interiors are awash with carbon fiber inlays and Alcantara. The seats are single piece sport bucket options and are placed nice and low giving that optimum sporty driving position. The bolstering on the seats is aggressive which is a nice touch as the seats wrap around the driver and hold you snug as you push the Aventador SVJ to the limits.

2020 Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Roadster Front Seats

In the middle of the dashboard sits a TFT display which shows the new ALA graphics and ANIMA settings. This setup alone steps up the appeal of almost a decade old supercar. There are many different buttons all around the cabin which are quite straight forward and easy to get around.

Just like the Ferraris, the steering wheel houses some of the crucial controls including the drive select toggle on the base of the wheel. The red switch can be used to switch from Strada to Sport to the all-out Corsa.

Some of the notable interior features are:

  • 2-way Power Driver Seats
  • Telescoping Steering Column
  • Remote Keyless Entry
  • Dual-Zone Automatic Air Conditioning
  • Day-Night Auto-Dimming Rearview Mirror
  • Integrated Navigation System
  • Engine Immobilizer
  • Air Filtration

What are the Infotainment features on offer?

The 2020 Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Roadster basically gets a rebranded version of Audi's MMI infotainment system. The system gets all things done but feels a generation older. It's not as intuitive and the graphics look cartoon-ish. What's great is that Lamborghini has left physical buttons for the most important functions and hence you do not need to take your eyes off the road to operate the most used functions.

What’s the cargo capacity like?

Mid-engine sports cars have their own quirks and features and some shortcomings too. As the engine is sitting in the middle, it eats up into the available cargo space. With that said, Lamborghini has cleverly designed the Aventador’s front trunk or ‘frunk’, which can take up a couple of soft bags. The rear, however, is super cramped and inside the cabin, there’s not even a glovebox to store your essentials. So all-in-all, Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Roadster is certainly not the most practical car out there.

2020 Ferrari 812 GTS is the most practical supercar in this comparison and can actually be regarded as a grand tourer. With that massive engine in the front, a lot of room is freed up in the back. Inside the cabin as well, a couple of soft bags can be packed easily.

Since its launch back in 2010, the Aventador has always managed to grab headlines for the way it looks. Its design is clearly inspired by jet fighters and all the aero bits and upgrades make the SVJ look even more menacing and sharper than before.

Upfront, the bumper is super aggressive and there are huge air dams for better airflow and to cool the brakes. The ALA system is integrated underneath the bodywork, the air passes the splitter upfront and is controlled by small pneumatically actuated flaps which open and shut depending on the corner.

At the back, there’s a huge fixed wing working in tandem with the front splitter. This clever system increases downforce by 40% without increasing the drag. The exhaust system has been upgraded as well and now is lighter than before.

The Roadster gains almost 70 pounds over the coupe version in the form of extra bracing of the chassis in order to maintain the level of performance. The chopped roof, however, doesn’t fold away. Rather, in true roadster fashion, the roof can be taken apart and packed upfront in the frunk manually. It’s not a tough task as the roof panels are made from Carbon fiber keeping the weight in check.

2020 Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Roadster Safety

7.0/10

There is not much to say about the safety of the Aventador S or any car of the Aventador series for that matter. The Aventador has not been rated by NHSTA or IIHS. However, Lamborghini has made sure that they load the Aventador LP-750-4 SV to the brim with the safety tech to make you safe at all times especially with the speeds you'd be carrying in this car.

Standard safety features include:

  • Dual Front With Head Protection Chambers Side-Mounted Airbags
  • Passenger Airbag Occupant Sensing Deactivation
  • Xenon High-Intensity Discharge Headlamp
  • Remote Anti-Theft Alarm System
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring
  • Dusk Sensing Headlamps
  • Stability Control

2020 Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Roadster Competition

Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Roadster vs Ferrari 812 GTS

2020 Ferrari 812 GTS is a mental super grand touring machine. The naturally-aspirated V12 up front is the most powerful engine Ferrari has ever plonked in one of their cars. As the name suggests, it makes more than 800 hp and all of this power is channeled to the rear wheels making this car one of the scariest cars to drive. When compared to the Lambo, the GTS feels much more refined and daily usable when driven sedately. Most of this is down to the smooth dual-clutch gearbox and a spacious cabin and a practical and usable boot.

2020 Ferrari 812 GTS

Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Roadster vs McLaren 720 S Spider

Woking-based McLaren 720 S Spider is one of the most capable supercars out there and is a bit of an underdog. It has the smallest engine, well relatively small when compared to giant Italian V12 engines. The McLaren 720 S is the ultimate track weapon that is also usable out on the road thanks to the trick suspension on the 720 S and a smooth 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.

When compared to the Aventador SVJ Roadster, the 720 S falls short of the drama and also lacks the aural flair as its twin-turbo V8’s soundtrack is no match to the symphony emitted by the iconic V12 banger at the back of that Lambo.

2020 McLaren 720 S Spider

2020 Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Roadster Final Verdict

8.0/10

If you think rationally, the 2020 Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Roadster doesn’t make much sense in this comparison as it is more expensive than both Ferrari and the McLaren, it’s not as practical as these two cars or everyday usable. But when has anyone bought a Lamborghini with their mind. Lamborghini’s strike a chord on an emotional level. Its an experience unlike anything else on the road. It is one of the last true naturally aspirated V12 beasts and it deserves all the love in the world. 2020 Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Roadster is a special car that must be preserved at all costs.
