2020 Kia Stinger GTS Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Karan Harit's image

Karan Harit Content Writer Updated on: December 12, 2019

As far as sports sedans go, the Kia Stinger was something of a sleeper that sensationalized the world out of nowhere in 2017. It was not only a fun car to drive but it could do so while maintaining a level of opulence reserved only to a handful of premium manufacturers. However, as good as it measures up in terms of luxury, the 2020 Kia Stinger GTS is a car that urges you to be in the driver’s seat.

Overall Rating

Being at the top of the Stinger lineup, the GTS benefits by having most of the options as standard. Not only that, it is the most powerful too. With 365 horses under the hood, the 2020 Kia Stinger GTS is very much capable of going head-to-head with most Audis and Mercs. It also helps that, despite being such a good overall car, its lower price tag makes you question if its German competitors need to step up the game.

That doesn’t mean the car is perfect. Being a Kia, it does have the odd quality build issue from time to time. Still, you wouldn’t get a lengthy 10-year warranty if you prefer a Lexus over it. The warranty includes plans like roadside assistance and complimentary maintenance. You’d forgive the Stinger for a few odd design structures, too. It is best experienced from behind the wheel.

2020 Kia Stinger GTS Features

9.0/10

The 2020 Kia Stinger GTS comes in two trims. The RWD starts at around $45,000. Just $2,500 more would get you the D-AWD trim that can handle just the way you want by balancing the power to the front and rear axles. Both the trims have the same V6 powertrain and creature comforts. Considering what you’re getting in this price range, it is a shame that the GTS will be a limited production run of just 800 units for 2020. So, if you really want one more than an Audi S3, you better book it the first chance you get.

2020 Kia Stinger GTS Engine

8.0/10

The engine and transmission are the same as the previous Stinger GT version. A twin-turbocharged 3.3L V6 that turns out 365 horsepower and 376 lb-ft of torque. The 8-speed automatic is smooth at every gear change, though we would prefer a manual for a bit more fun during a drive.

Some tweaks to the drivetrain do help, though. The throttle response and engine boil feel best in the exciting mode.

The 8-speed automatic does its job well but all the rivals have the option of manual overdrive. This takes away from the transmission to realizing its full potential. Then there is the fact that a smaller engine on Merc produces more power.

How fast is the Stinger GTS?

Overall, the 2020 Kia Stinger GTS measures up well in terms of acceleration. With a 0-60 time of 4.7 seconds, it deserves its place as a sports sedan.

2020 Kia Stinger GTS Sedan

The response as you put the pedal down varies depending on the driving mode. It is the most intense in Drift mode. Just a swift nudge and you’ll send the rear tires spinning as your head gets jerked into the headrest.

The only one that can surpass the Stinger GTS in a drag race is the Audi S3. Although it is less powerful, its lighter chassis and superior Quattro AWD more than makes up for it.

What about the Braking performance?

The heavy chassis of the Stinger demands a large diameter of brake discs to let the car remain control of the driver. It can come to halt from 60 mph within 113 feet, which is just about average for its class.

2020 Kia Stinger GTS Sedan

In retrospect, its competitors fare much better, with the Mercedes-AMG C 43 doing the best with a stopping distance of 106 feet.

How does the GTS fare on the handling front?

The suspension of the 2020 Kia Stinger is sports-tuned and a limited-slip rear differential makes sure the tires get a good balance of power. In spite of that, the ride of the GTS feels way more suited for the road than the track. In Comfort mode, the suspension swallows up any bump easily. The experience is not a far cry when in the Sport mode. It is only when you engage the Drift mode when the stiffness becomes unbearable for regular tarmac. No matter which mode you’re in, the steering is responsive and lets you exactly where the tires are pointed.

2020 Kia Stinger GTS Handling

The cabin is quiet at highway speeds. The engine doesn’t misbehave unless you really want it to. Kia uses brake fade compensation to make sure the discs remain in optimum condition even when you’re constantly engaging the e-brake to send the car power sliding every chance you get. For a car that weighs nearly 4,000 lbs., it is amazing how nimble the Stinger GTS is around corners. The D-AWD system can balance power delivery to the front and rear axles. In optimum conditions, the grip can be immense, giving you the confidence of coming out of a chicane without swinging the tail.

2020 Kia Stinger GTS Fuel Economy

5.0/10

The power output makes the Stinger suffer in terms of fuel economy. It doesn’t score many points with a 20 mpg combined since all of the other sports sedans perform better than that. Even the fuel tank is of limited capacity, with just 15 gallons usable out of the total 16.5 gallons. This gives the Stinger GTS a range of about 300 miles. Therefore, you can expect to constantly refill if you ever take a whole track day or go on a long cruise.

2020 Kia Stinger GTS Interior

For its price range, the 2020 Kia Stinger GTS is surprisingly comfortable. With premium Alcantara covering nearly all of the panels and steering, you can expect Nappa leather and Chamude everywhere else. Only a few bits of plastic around the dash and console remind you that it is made by the same guys behind the Niro. The seats are 6-way power-adjustable just like last year. The tilting-and-telescopic steering wheel is power-adjustable as well. This, complete with adjustable side and thigh bolsters, ensures the optimum driving position for any driver or passenger. The rear seats can feel a bit cramped for taller passengers.

2020 Kia Stinger Interior

The engine noise doesn’t infiltrate the cabin much unless you are really pinning the throttle. The wind and tire noise is suppressed to a large extent as well. In addition to dual-zone automatic climate control, Kia offers an air filtration and fragrance system that competes well with its Mercedes-Benz counterpart. The system maintains a pleasant aroma throughout the cabin of the Stinger GTS.

Infotainment System

Kia has nothing but the best it has to offer for the 2020 Kia Stinger GTS. On the center of the console, you’ll find an 8.0-inch touchscreen that uses an updated version of Kia’s trusted UVO infotainment system. The system uses a widget-based interface that makes it easier to interact with one hand on the steering wheel. Both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported. The system adds a few apps such as Wave and Sirius Travel Link for the sake of navigation. It is a shame that we still won’t get a Wi-Fi hotspot or an auxiliary input.

The audio is delivered through a 15-speaker 720-Watt Harman-Kardon surround sound system that gives the best of B&O and Bose a run for their money. The 12-channel amplifier that comes with it uses patented QuantumLogic 5.1 digital surround sound to provide the best adjustment for any music genre. And you need not worry if you have compressed audio files. The Clari-Fi sound restoration technology ensures nothing but the best quality sound falls to your ears once you turn the system on.

How practical is it in terms of the Cargo space?

The 2020 Kia Stinger GTS can very well be used to carry a bit of cargo in the trunk. Its 23.3 cubic feet trunk is remotely operated and its width makes it convenient to load in large suitcases. The SUV-class storage space is the best in its class. It can further be extended by folding down the rear seats, opening up to a massive 52 cubic feet.

The small-item storage upfront also follows the same trend. There are several cupholders and the console can easily hold purses and small bags. The side pockets are good for medium-sized water bottles. There is a dedicated smartphone stand that comes with wireless charging. All this makes you question if it is really a Kia.

2020 Kia Stinger GTS Exterior

8.0/10

The body of the 2020 Kia Stinger GTS has been left largely untouched from the previous year. We stand by that decision since there is only so much you can do before you get a divisive audience for perhaps the best-looking sports sedan on the planet. The carbon fiber on the front nose and side skirts is a welcome touch. It not only makes the car look more, well, sporty but also shaves off a few pounds. Similar to its predecessors, the 2020 Stinger GTS carries 19-inch alloy wheels and Stinger badges replaced with Kia from the front and back.

There is an exclusive color scheme for the 2020 limited edition run: a bright orange high-visibility jacket that lets you know that it’s coming from 10 miles off. While there are several other color schemes that carry forth from the previous year’s variants, you can bet this is the one that will be opted for the most.

Contrary to popular opinion, building a sports sedan big and heavy actually works in favor of its class. The smaller size, like what you see in the Merc or BMW, certainly gives it more performance appeal but takes away from passenger and cargo volume. In fact, the car will spend more time commuting or cruising the back roads than blitzing around the track.

2020 Kia Stinger GTS Safety

So far, there has been no official safety rating granted to any version of the Kia Stinger by the NHTSA. Nevertheless, the car has won the Top Safety Pick Plus award from the IIHS in 2019. You can expect nothing short of it for 2020 either. The 2019 Kia Stinger got the highest rating of ‘Good’ in almost all categories. Its collision mitigation system was keenly appreciated for keeping the car from serious harm at city speeds.

The number of driver aids and safety features that come with the Kia Stinger is nothing short of fulfilling. The systems are state-of-the-art and use sensors that most luxury sedans fail to match up to. For keeping the occupants safe in the unlikely event of a crash, there are multiple dual-stage airbags present for every seat. The car even comes with an emergency SOS system that activates as soon as it senses the car has been wrecked.

2020 Kia Stinger GTS Competition

Kia Stinger GTS vs Audi S3

2019 Audi S3
2020 Audi S3 Sedan

With a Quattro AWD system and excellent overall handling, the Audi S3 is certainly the one that matches up the most to the 2020 Kia Stinger GTS. The S3 is definitely a faster car but fails to deliver the fun of drifting around corners and smoking the rear tires, which the Stinger GTS can do at will. Both cars are identical in terms of interior technology. It is Audi which gets the edge due to its smoother interface and better default voice control.

Kia Stinger GTS vs Mercedes-Benz AMG C 43

2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG C 43
2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG C 43

The AMG series of the C-Class is a force to be reckoned with. The 3.0L twin-turbo V6 powerhouse under the hood of the C 43 is bolder than the one in the Stinger but fails to match its performance. It is partly due to the fact that the Merc has a bit of turbo lag that causes those torques to kick in after a while. Around corners, the C 43 feels more lively due to a bit of bias to the rear wheels with its AWD. The better interiors ensure that the extra $7,750 you’re paying for the AMG C 43 goes to the right places.

Kia Stinger GTS vs BMW 330i

2019 BMW 330i xDrive
2020 BMW 330i Sedan

A sports sedan is supposed to serve the dual purpose of a comfortable commuting companion and a thoroughbred performance machine. While the Stinger GTS delivers appropriately on both ends, the 330i misses out on the ‘sports’ part of the sports sedan. The first time you pin the throttle on the Bimmer, there is a lot you’d expect. Rather than an adrenaline-fueled rush, you get a belated thrust after much lag. It also doesn’t help that the BMW has a harsher ride quality than the Kia Stinger. When it comes to choosing one or the other, the Stinger GTS is the obvious pick.

2020 Kia Stinger GTS Final Verdict

With only 800 units that will ever roll off the production line in spring next year, the 2020 Kia Stinger GTS comes as an exclusive that will make many hold their breath with anticipation. The mod with the AWD gives the car more character and the premium interior prevents it from going too savage. With only a few ignorable problems with it, this limited production marvel is sure to run out quick.
