The all-new, fourth-generation 2021 Kia Sorento is a mid-size crossover with three-rows of seats unlike any other rival in the segment. The redesigned Kia Sorento's biggest change for 2021 is the variety of configurations that the crossover now offers. Pricing takes a plunge, as its MSRP starts from $29,390 for the base Sorento and goes upto $50,000 for the new X-Line trim. At first glance, the 2021 Sorento looks poised, thanks to bold new styling inside-out. The SX, in particular, boasts glossy black trim and wheels while the X-Line SX-Prestige gets an extra inch of ground clearance, more functional, and exclusive styling and colors - making it a nice off-roading option. The 2021 Kia Sorento, which goes on sale in early 2021, has improved in multiple other ways including better powertrains which are more powerful and fuel-efficient than before.

2021 Kia Sorento All-New 2021 Kia Sorento Gets A Big Price Increase
All-New 2021 Kia Sorento is still going its own way!

There are four efficient powertrains options including a new PHEV model for the new Sorento along with more welcome equipment in the standard safety suite. Though we will miss the Sorento V6 and its good max towing capacity of 5,000 pounds, the new 4-cylinder engines are appreciated for better fuel economy. Incidentally, the maximum tow rating of the new Sorento 2.5T is 3,500 pounds, while the non-turbo base 2.5L 4-cylinder is rated at 1,999 pounds.

If we compare the dimensions, the new Sorento rides on a new chassis with a 1.4-inch-longer wheelbase and is lighter and stronger than before. It's the cabin that benefits from an incresed interior room along with more latest technology. Also, for the first time, the 2021 Sorento is available with 2nd-row captain’s chairs. The Sorento is a direct rival to the likes of Hyundai Santa Fe, Chevrolet Blazer, and Volkswagen Tiguan. Read our in-depth review and pricing analysis of the 2021 Kia Sorento to get a more clear picture of how it is strategically placed in the U.S market.

For the 2021 model year, the Kia Sorento gets even more expensive, but for the right reasons. Nearly $3,000 expensive. But wait! There’s more. This time the Sorento has a lot going on for its price and we are amazed to see such a dramatic changeover. The new Sorento will boast of thorough changes to the design and dimensions in the exterior as well as the interior. Gone are the days when the Kia Sorento looked like an ideal soccer mom’s vehicle used to drop the kids off at school. Now, the design speaks muscularity and boldness along with enhanced practicality.

The 2021 Sorento is an all-new model and bigger inside-out!

Kia has also said that the 2021 Sorento will be based on an all-new platform that will enable the manufacturer to make the Sorento big inside out. Efficient utilization of space! The powerplants will now see a greener twist with hybrids powering the combustion engines, with a plug-in hybrid to be launched soon!

7.8/10

The 2021 Kia Sorento trims and pricing starts at $30,560 for the 2021 Sorento LX (base trim), including the $1,170 destination charge. If you want all-wheel-drive, add $1,800 to the price. There are six trim levels for the non-hybrid Sorento models - LX 2.5, S 2.5, EX 2.5T, SX 2.5T, SX Prestige 2.5T and SX Prestige X-Line 2.5T, along with a choice of the new-for-2021 hybrid powertrain on the middle-tier model. Starting from $29,390 MSRP, the 2021 Sorento's prices have increased significantly over the outgoing model. However, Kia has already revealed the long list of features that will be a part of the all-new Sorento.

2021 Kia Sorento side view

The 2020 Kia Sorento starts at $26,390 for the L. climbing the trim ladder you’ll see it stop at nearly $42,000. The base models are reasonably well-equipped and can serve the needs of a family easily. On the other hand, it is expected that the 2021 Sorento will be getting the same trim line-up as its predecessor. The Hybrid is only available in S and EX to trim levels and comes standard with the captain's chairs. It doesn't seem like the SX's added luxuries are available. We don't yet know the plug-in hybrid's feature content.

2021 Kia Sorento Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

The Kia Sorento proves to be a very reliable car that can run 10s of 1000s of miles without incurring any significant cost per se. It provides a very wide variety of standard features from the base trim itself and as we climb up the trims, the features tend to get more and improved. The Sorento provides unmatched value for someone who is in a dilemma to choose between a crossover and a full-blown SUV.

What are the Reliability Ratings and Ownership Cost of the Kia Sorento?

When it comes to maintenance costs, Sorento owners will have to shell out $352 in the first year itself. This maintenance includes servicing and other small repairs. There is a nearly $200 increase for the second year. What’s a bomb for the owner is the massive nearly $2,000 maintenance that they’ll have to incur in the fourth year. This is the time when many owners have reported gearbox issues that thankfully are covered in the best powertrain warranty in the car industry. Adding to the maintenance is the massive 21.02% depreciation that the Sorento incurs! Thankfully, this reduction in the value goes down to below 10% from the second year onwards.

Going for a Sorento for the North Carolina folks is a very good choice because the car provides a lot of value for the price you pay, and it costs the least here. Maintenance costs will be fluctuating depending on how much your car is subject to usage. The more the usage, the more the maintenance will be. The maintenance of the Sorento for the 4th year might cost a bomb but otherwise, the overall experience is a hassle-free one. Both the repairs and maintenance are subject to usage and usage is a very subjective variable. What we are doing is providing you with an estimate of what the projected cost of ownership will be in the next 5 years. The total cost of ownership for a period of 5 years will rack up to $34,153 when being driven for 15,000 miles each year. This segment of cars is made for hauling people and still be very easy to go around town. These cars usually require minimal maintenance due to the fact that they can be used daily too!

Korean and Japanese brands are known to offer cheap maintenance and repair costs, especially when compared to their German rivals. Thus, Kia’s Sorento is no different as it offers a low cost of ownership while it goes quite easy on your pocket. As of now, there are no safety recall or customer complaints reported by the NHTSA website which showcases Kia’s quality check and customer satisfaction commitment. If you manage to keep up with your Sorento’s regular maintenance as it deserves, the costs will definitely come down substantially, otherwise, they will climb as the case with every other car. The Sorento does not manage to escape the unfortunate depreciation pit, for which we suggest you to look at some of the pre-owned vehicles.

In terms of the ownership costs, on average, you will have to shell out nearly $40,178 in 5 years when you buy a brand new Kia Sorento. The cost is calculated considering that you run a mid variant of the Kia Sorento for 15,000 miles annually. Overall, the ownership cost over the 5 year time is quite acceptable considering its rivals and the segment.

What is the Warranty Coverage with the 2021 Kia Sorento?

The warranty on the Sorento can be dubbed in only one word: excellent. It provides the longest powertrain warranty in the segment: 10 years or 100,000 miles! The coverage is very solid which also includes 5 years of roadside assistance. The Limited Warranty is of 5 years or 60,000 miles. Kia skips on complimentary scheduled maintenance, though.

Roadside Assistance

As for the recalls, The 2021 Sorento is not yet released into the U.S market. The current 2020 Sorento registered only one recallfor moisture in the Anti-lock Brake (ABS) Module which could result in an electrical short. This electrical short within the ABS could raise a fire in the engine compartment, even when the vehicle is not working. This could be a very fatal situation for the driver and as well as for the other passengers in the SUV.

What're the Miles per Dollar Cost of the 2021 Kia Sorento?

We had put an estimate of $34,153 for 5 years, 15,000 miles each year which means 75,000 miles. This equates to a running cost of $1.455 per mile! This calculation includes many factors like depreciation, fuel costs, and insurance. This is also a very subjective parameter as many of the factors depend on how the car is driven and maintained.

2021 Kia Sorento Buying Advice

The 2021 Kia Sorento is one of the most popular cars in its segment when it comes to offering an extensive list of features for less price. It also offers a lot of variants which makes sure that there is a Sorento for every need. Amongst the five trims, we recommend the EX trim, as it gets a powerful engine and also adds a lot of features to the list. Also, its interiors feel more upmarket when compared to the lower trims. Hence, it offers the best balance between price and features when you talk about a mid-size seven-seater carrier.

The 2021 Kia Sorento comes with a choice of three different powertrains including the all-new hybrid engine. The standard unit is an all-new 2.5L GDI which is capable of delivering 191 horsepower and comes mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox. Next in line stands a 2.5L Turbocharged GDI, which pushes the power up to 281 hp in the Sorento. The 2021 Sorento also gets a hybrid 1.6L turbocharged four-cylinder which will be paired with a 44 kWh electric motor to produce a combined 227 horsepower. An all-new 1.6L Turbocharged Plug-in hybrid engine debuts for the 2021 Sorento with an amazing power output of 261 hp.

All the engines will be paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The conventional engines can opt with either an AWD or an FWD configuration. The gearbox is very slick and downshifts without showing a second of hesitation. The Sorento is a very composed and sure-footed vehicle that performs really good during highway drives and in-city commute. The throttle response is good and the brakes are sharp.

All the SUVs here are powered by 4-bangers in their base trims. Every car offers a Front-Wheel Drive powertrain as standard which can also be upgraded to the All-Wheel Drive system. An automatic shifter is common in all cars. The Sorento will possess the most brute among all. The Sorento also will belt out the most promising torque output of all the other cars here. It also has an electric motor that will aid in the acceleration.

How fast is the 2021 Kia Sorento from 0-60 MPH and how's its Braking Performance?

The 2021 Sorento's lineup has a wide selection of engines and is available with either FWD or AWD drivetrain. A 191 hp 2.5L, 281 hp 2.5T and a 1.6T hybrid, all are powerful and efficient. Since there’s not a lot of information available outside about the powerplants employed by Kia for the new Sorento, we have no number to provide for the acceleration as of yet. But, for the time being, let’s take the older 2020 Sorento into the picture and talk about how fast it reaches 60 miles an hour and how swift it is to the quarter-mile.

2021 Kia Sorento's powertrains never feel underpowered!

Talking of brakes, the Sorento’s braking department is headed by massive 12.6-inch rotors up front and 12-inch rotors at the rear. And being a Kia, you need not worry about the Sorento’s performance. The rotors are ventilated and the 4-wheel ABS works like a charm, bringing the car to a halt without any hesitation or jerks. The feedback from the brake pedal is very strong and provides instantaneous response without any signs of fading.

The Blazer just hurries off the start line, giving the best 0 to 60 mph sprint and impressive quarter-mile timings. The others are also respectably fast with their 4 bangers. The Sorento’s turbo 4-bangers have not been put to test yet but we expect them to be even faster than the Chevrolet given the brute they possess. Talking about stopping, the upgraded brakes on the Sorento are set to stop it at a shorter distance than the current generation. The maximum towing capacity of Kia Sorento with the 2.5T engine is claimed to be 3,500 pounds.

How good is the 2021 Kia Sorento's Ride and Handling?

With the latest upgrade, the new 2021 Kia Sorento gets many different new techs, which in turn affect the ride and handling aspects of the big SUV. For the latest Sorento, features like Adaptive All-Wheel-Drive with Lock Mode and Torque Vectoring Cornering Control have become standard. As a result, the new 2021 Sorento now keeps monitoring the road conditions and distributes the power accordingly amongst the 4 wheels.

The 2021 Sorento is not that different in overall-size, offers Promising Driving Dynamics!

The 2021 Kia Sorento also features more tech features like Hill Start Assist Control and All-Weather Performance Driving modes which promote a lot of confidence to the driver in almost every environment, be it snow or other adverse conditions. The new Sorento definitely feels more poised and ready for action than its predecessors.

Opting for the AWD Sorento with a locking center differential drops the gas mileage to 23 mpg/25 mpg city/highway.

The turbocharged 2.5-liter 4-cylinder that comes mated with an 8-speed wet dual-clutch automatic transmission gets EPA combined fuel economy of 25 mpg, almost 3 mpg better than the previous V6-powered Sorento.

The new Kia Sorento 1.6T Hybrid is available only with FWD combined with a 6-speed automatic transmission, gets the best MPG ratings. With the EPA-estimated fuel economy of 39 mpg city/35 mpg highway/37 mpg combined, it is the most efficient 2021 Sorento.

The new Sorento will be a whole new car, based on a whole new platform, which means that the 2021 Kia Sorento interiors have also been worked upon from the ground up. The overall dashboard looks and feels very modern with the switches and buttons placed conveniently for the driver to reach out to while driving. Wherever you touch, you are greeted by a very premium and soft-touch material that adds a pinch of luxury to the Sorento’s cabin. All the curves inside the cabin have been replaced by edges and sharp lines which tend a look of modernity to the cabin. being a Kia, you can expect plenty of cubby spaces to store your stuff inside the cabin. The center console houses a couple of cup holders which will prevent your drinks from spilling all over the interior. The build quality is very solid and you won’t hear any squeaks or any signs of bad fitment.

2021 Sorento's interior more distinctive for 2021 without being a carbon copy of the Telluride!

Also, Kia’s new platform for the 2021 Sorento means that you have more space inside to accommodate people comfortably. The cabin’s comfort is one thing that will be commented on once we sit inside the cabin. The standard features on the inside include leather upholstery, power seats, rear AC controls, and adaptive cruise control. You can also opt for packages like the EX Sport package and the EX Touring package which add to the list a 10-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, 110V power socket, 8-inch infotainment screen, and navigation.

The Tiguan and the Sorento share very similar dimensions in the first and the second row but the Sorento is the only one that can accommodate 2 more butts than everyone else here. The Santa Fe has the roomiest cabin of all and can give great amounts of comfort to its occupants. Third-row seating means that the Kia misses out on the cargo capacity that the others offer.

How good is the Infotainment System on the 2021 Kia Sorento?

Technology is increased and upgraded for 2021. The infotainment, just like with the interior see a major overhaul in the new Sorento. The current 7-inch screen is replaced by a bigger 10.3-inch infotainment display. What’s interesting is the big 12.3-inch digital instrument console which will house a plethora of information regarding the vehicle settings, all the gauges, navigation, a speedometer, and a tachometer.

2021 Kia Sorento all-new dashboard and infotainment!

The infotainment system is expected to support anything and everything that is available in terms of connectivity along with a newer user interface which will give the driver a smoother experience than before. And, the audio system is expected to be upgraded to a Harman/Kardon setup which will provide the best audio experience in the segment.

That being said, the following are the major features you will find inside:

  • Ambient lighting
  • Moon lamps in the front doors and dashboard
  • 10.3-inch infotainment setup
  • 12-3-inch Digital LED driver instrument cluster
  • Plush leather upholstery

2021 Kia Sorento Exterior

7.5/10

The 2021 Kia Sorento is a generation upgrade for the line-up which means that there has been extensive work done to the exterior which includes a whole new overall styling which is a far cry from the current generation’s design. The new design language will very modern and on par with the competition. 2021 will also be longer and a bit broader than the current generation model.

2021 Kia Sorento drops the bland look for a more stylish exterior!

All the curves give way to sharp lines and edges all around. The new Sorento is also based on a new platform that aims at improving the interior space and also adds some extra inches to its length. The Sorento’s design inspiration is the brand’s Telluride and the Seltos, it seems. Not much has been revealed about the new model but it will be based on Hyundai’s newer platform for the mid-size segment. Hence, only time can tell what the 2021 Kia Sorento will look like.

The 2021 Kia Sorento gains inches in length and wheelbase but the rest remains unknown. So, we took the current generation’s figures to compare. The Sorento remains one of the lighter cars in the segment which aid in its braking and makes city driving easy. The longer wheelbase means an increase in the interior space too. The Santa Fe weighs the least but it still doesn’t help its braking performance.

The notable exterior features of the 2021 Kia Sorento are:

  • LED Headlights and Taillights
  • LED DRLs and Foglamps
  • Power-operated cargo door
  • Continental high-performance all-weather tires
  • 19/20/21 inch wheels
  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers
  • Aggressive Tiger-grille
  • Chrome highlights

2021 Kia Sorento Safety

9.9/10

The 2021 Kia Sorento will get all of the above features and also make them available to the lower trims. We expect all the current systems to be updated and be even more efficient than they are now to reduce the margin of error in a crash. It has an all-new platform and hence, we cannot really predict how the crash-test scores will be but looking at Kia’s track record, we can rest assured that the Sorento will be the safest out there.

Every 2021 Kia Sorento comes standard with forwarding collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist, a driver inattention warning system, and a rear occupant alert system. All Sorento models except the base LX also get blind-spot and rear cross-traffic warning, rear parking sensors, and Safe Exit Assist.

The current generation Sorento has a host of driver assistance features in its lower trims to make the driver feel comfortable and confident whenever inside the car. the current generation also has some accolades to its name in terms of safety ratings from the IIHS and the NHTSA. The forward-collision warning system in the EX and SX trims can detect cyclists and forward cross-traffic. Those trims also get adaptive cruise control.

Some of the highlighting features of the Sorento’s safety suite are:

  • Pre-collision safety system
  • Front, side, and a rear-view camera
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Passenger airbag occupant sensing deactivation
  • Electronic Stability control
  • Blindspot and
  • Lane departure warning
  • Lane Keep Assist
  • Front, second-row, and third-row head airbags
  • Emergency braking assist
  • Dual front side-mounted airbag

2021 Kia Sorento vs Hyundai Santa Fe

Both the Santa Fe and the Sorento have been cousins and share a lot in common. Everything is similar to both the cars starting from the luxury offered to the build, fit, and finish of the cars.

But the Santa Fe provides more space than the Sorento and the Sorento is a better car to drive than the Santa Fe. The 2021 Sorento will provide more space inside but will it be more than the Santa Fe? Let’s see.

2021 Kia Sorento vs Chevrolet Blazer

The Blazer is basically a bigger Camaro, as many people say. It is meant for some spirited drives and the power delivery is very linear. The steering is responsive and the body roll is controlled very well by the suspension.

2021 Chevrolet Blazer SUV

The Sorento is based on a new platform that will drastically improve the dynamics of the car which might mean an all-around package for the owners.

2021 Kia Sorento vs Volkswagen Tiguan

The VW is also a very close match to the Kia in terms of everything but the Kia manages to outpace the VW in everything in the current generation.

2021 Volkswagen Tiguan

The newer Sorento is expected to outshine the VW in every way possible! However, the Tiguan is expected to receive a major update as well to rival its competitors. Hence only time will tell which car will have the ultimate upper hand.

2021 Kia Sorento Final Verdict

The 2021 Kia Sorento is an all-new, fourth-generation model that still has three rows of seats unlike any other mid-size crossover in the segment. The biggest change for 2021 Sorento includes the amount of variety it now offers. The new X-Line model is the answer to sportier trims from the competitors. All other trims get revised styling while the interior sees a bigger overhaul. There's a huge change under the hood as well. All this for a starting price of $29,390 makes the 2021 Sorento an edge above the rivals.

The whole new design makes the Sorento muscular and modern, inside-out. the newer powerplants are expected to belt out a good amount of brute to make your drives exciting. The interior quality has been upgraded and the overall design language is even more appealing. The 2021 Kia Sorento will be the best in the segment, once it gets on the road!

My Sorento drives comfortable and smooth over most road conditions. Power of the engine is very adequate when passing without jerky downshifts. Since it has bigger engine, good mpg numbers isn't what it's best at

Surely it is the best when it comes to manoeuvring it around in city. Handles pretty well for the weight but doesn't launch well on the freeways.

Doltish misses

Well for the price, I say Kia has missed a few basic touches in this wonderfully spaced three row suv. Practicality is at par, but everything with this kind of design language could have been better if executed perfectly. Driving is not a problem though and like every three row suv, Sorento also isn't city friendly and likes to lurches into excitement when hitting the freeways.
