2017 Kia Optima hybrid Sedan Price, Review, Ratings and Pictures

Spacious sedans are continually losing market share to crossovers, but family-friendly four-doors such as the Kia Optima prove the segment still has plenty of life. The list of improvements to the 2017 version is mild in light of the full redesign it received last year, but the Optima line continues to grow with several new packages that allow shoppers to mix and match to find the right car. Add that to the Optima's existing strengths — a compelling value proposition, roomy seating, and a big trunk — and you've got a sedan that can stand toe to toe with all-stars such as the Honda Accord and Ford Fusion.

The new face-lift was brought not just for cosmetic purposes, but also to reduce the drag of the car. The aerodynamics of Optima made it more fuel-efficient but the competitor Honda Accord took that badge away. The new Kia Optima Hybrid is a head-turner on the road and can do well in the market because of the price tag on it.

Real power Sedan

Pros - Styling sense, design, affordable, fuel economy

Cons - Nothing

more features then money can buy My decision to buy optima was the one i am proud of. It is highly customizable sedan with lots of features already packed in. It has extensive cargo storage. The cabin is very spacious and the comfort of driving is just smooth and soothing experience. Its controls and features are engaging. It is reasonably priced. Drive is very sporty and well balanced. The suspension dynamics are well tuned when tested at fast speed or some tough maneuvers or cornering at fast speed. It is very responsive and quick. Safe car. I had a decent budget, coudn't decide what car to pick, the staff helped me go with my initail decision to buy Optima easily without much confusion. They are pretty subtle.

Engaging Drive

Pros - Turbocharged, looks, performance

Cons - Issues with the seat adjustment, and legroom is bit of an issue too for some tall people

Complete Package. Optima EX is very desirable car. It has very comfortable interiors, leather upholstrey, dual zone active climate control, heated seats, and low price. Its ambience is amazing because of sunroof, power adjustable seats. Steering is very responsive and precise. Touchscreen is user friendly. Its controls are engaging and easy to use. The driving dynamics are also very well tuned for some hard maneuvers. Its amazing the way it can be driven. Its powerful , hybrid, economic and everything makes it a complete package. I had a low budget , still i Thought to buy the car, it would have beenlot better if they would have helped me with good discount but they were moreconcerned about selling as fast as possible, I bought with the decision in my mind. Honestly It wasn't that great.

Good reliable sedan from Kia

Pros - Reliable, good ownership costs and comfortable

Cons - Nothing much

Our evergreen car in the garage This Kia Optima was one of the cars in our garage. we rarely use the car and it's like if there was no car then everyone chose this to go. So, this has many owners and it's a secondary car, we are not very much perfect in handling the car. so, it goes harsh but still, it serves good as it was before. The reliability of the vehicle is good. The service and ownership costs are very much affordable.

There are three different engines for the 2017 Optima. The base 185-horsepower 2.4-liter engine is perfectly fine for daily driving. A 178-horsepower turbocharged 1.6-liter engine comes in the LX 1.6T. There’s also a 245-horsepower 2.0-liter engine that powers the SX and SXL trim levels, offering more punch and polish than the 1.6-liter engine. A six-speed automatic transmission comes standard, but the LX 1.6T features a dual-clutch seven-speed automatic.

2017 Kia Optima hybrid Sedan Pricing and Features

7.6/10

The 2017 Kia Optima Hybrid is available in just 2 trims, Premium and EX. Premium is the base trim and comes with 16inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, and Apple CarPlay, and keyless entry and ignition. Whereas, the EX trim is quite expensive but is loaded to the brim with features like leather upholstery and a heated steering wheel with a Harmon Kardon HD sound system.

It comes with the UVO eServices infotainment system, which includes a 7-inch touch-screen color display, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, a rearview camera, satellite radio, and dual-zone automatic climate control. The Optima Hybrid EX adds leather upholstery, a 12-way power-adjustable driver's seat with four-way power lumbar support, a six-way power-adjustable passenger seat with a height adjuster, heated front seats, a surround-sound audio system with 10 speakers, and a navigation system with an 8-inch touch screen.

We Recommend

The fully redesigned 2017 Kia Optima Hybrid improves upon its predecessor in many ways. You'll like the Optima's easy-driving nature and the number of features you get for your money. Fuel economy isn't tops, but it's good enough to keep this hybrid right in the mix. We would recommend EX trim as it offers a lot of accessories and includes the premium convenience package which includes the lane assist and heated steering wheel. The premium comes with a lot of standard features but the EX trim definitely takes the edge.

2017 Kia Optima hybrid Sedan Engine and Performance

9.2/10

The KIA Optima comes packed with a 2.0L in-line engine and a 38kW electric motor. The gasoline engine and electric motor generate 192hp and this may not be the best in class, but for a hybrid, it is pretty manageable. Power transmission is handled by a 6-speed automatic transmission. The upgraded powertrain is surprisingly smooth and better than previous trims.

The Optima was replaced by a new set of batteries. The new 1.62-kWh lithium-polymer battery pack is much denser and is lightweight. This reduction in the total weight of the vehicle resulted in a 13% increase in power capacity, which gives the updated version an edge over the competitors. This new battery pack is cleverly placed under the trunk floor which saves a lot of space.

2017 Kia Optima Hybrid Acceleration

The Optima is powered by a 2.0L engine and an electric motor, but it struggles to keep up with its competitors. This hybrid takes 8.1sec to touch 60mph from naught. The slowest in this segment is the Ford Fusion, but even Fusion makes up for it by giving more efficiency. There is enough power to keep the Optima cruising on highways.

If we talk about the competitors, the Honda Accord wins the race. Accord reaches 60mph from naught in 6.1sec. Even the Hyundai maps the 60mph barrier in 7.7sec which is quite impressive for a hybrid. The Ford Fusion being the slowest in the segment is not the very option in terms of acceleration.

2017 Kia Optima Hybrid Braking and Handling

The 2017 Optima is equipped with regenerative braking which recharges the lithium polymer batteries whenever the brakes are applied. Kia was kind enough to provide Optima with the largest front brake in the segment, which helped the hybrid with a good stopping distance. Optima takes 175ft to stop from 70mph.

The conventional breaks and the regenerative brakes work together sometimes which lets air get into the braking system. The air inside the braking system gets the brake a little bit spongy but it does not affect the handling of the car. Steering is responsive and CVT keeps the ride smooth.

2017 Kia Optima hybrid Sedan Fuel Economy

9.0/10

Hybrid cars tend to offer a better fuel economy as compared to gasoline cars. Well, the statement is somewhat true but Optima could have done better in terms of fuel economy. This hybrid by Kia provides 39mpg in the city but can provide 46mpg on highways. If we talk about the combined economy, 42mpg is still better.

The other hybrids such as Honda Accord and Ford's Fusion are very fuel-efficient. Honda Accord is the expensive one that impressed us with its fuel economy. Accord gives 49mpg in city and 47mpg combined. Hyundai's Sonata is not an option for the people who are trying to save some money on gas. Sonata gives 40mpg in city and highway combined.

2017 Kia Optima hybrid Sedan Interior

9.0/10

The hybrid Optima is quite spacious and provides a good amount of legroom for the passengers. Optima comes with legroom of 45.47-in on the front which is good enough for a 6foot person. Sonata provides the best in class legroom, but looking at other aspects of Sonata it does not excite much.

The EX trim offers heated front seats that are comfortable and luxurious. The Interior's plastic quality is impressive and the texture gives the car a luxury touch. Optima was given better thigh support than its predecessor. Seats can fit 5 adult passengers quite effectively and can be a good family car. It does feel a little bit uncomfortable in the back as the headroom is not enough for a tall person.

2017 Kia Optima Hybrid Infotainment

The Premium trim of the Optima is equipped with a 7inch audio display. Optima infotainment system comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility which can connect an I-phone or Android and can open a wide arena of apps for the user. The updated infotainment system supports Google voice recognition search which makes things a lot more while driving.

The EX trim includes an 8-inch audio display which is equipped with a 630-watt 10-speaker Harman-Kardon HD sound system. Its 8inch audio display has the ability to find nearby charging stations for the lithium polymer batteries. The 8inch infotainment also offers:

  • Auxiliary Audio Input
  • AM/FM Stereo
  • MP3 Player
  • Satellite Radio
  • Harmon-Kardon Sound System

2017 Kia Optima Hybrid Cargo Volume

2017 Optima Hybrid surprised us with the boot space it has to offer, the 13.42 cu-ft. boot space which is the best-in-class. Even Honda Accord Hybrid was not able to compete with the Optima as it had just 11cu.ft. Cargo volume.

The trunk room stands at 13.42 cubic feet with an opening that should be wide enough for most big-box boxes. And as opposed to some models in this class (Accord), a 60/40-split rear seat setup is standard on all trim levels of the Optima, allowing that added flexibility when you’re willing to trade off some passenger space for longer-item cargo space.

2017 Kia Optima hybrid Sedan Exterior

6.9/10

KIA brought the 2017 Optima with an attractive tiger-nose grill, giving the Optima an aggressive facelift. Optima is light on its wheels, but the Accord is the lightest. Optima is quite easy to drive in the city, the automatic transmission and the dimensions of the car are less of a headache. A height of 57.5inches adds an advantage to its stance.

The Optima was able to shed some weight by getting a higher density battery which resulted in better efficiency. The track width of Optima gives it more stability and a better turning radius. Optima has a wheelbase of 110.4in which gives the car more legroom. Some of its exterior features are:

  • 16" alloy wheels
  • Active grille air shutter
  • LED daytime running lights
  • Heated side-view mirrors

2017 Kia Optima hybrid Sedan Safety

9.9/10

All the variants of the new Kia Optima Hybrid feature a rear-camera display, while there’s a great surround-view camera system on SX and SXL trim levels. Standard equipment on all Optimas includes seat-mounted side airbags, side-curtain airbags, a driver’s knee bag, front active headrests, electronic stability control, and hill-start assist, to keep the vehicle from rolling back when starting on a steep uphill grade.

2017 Kia Optima hybrid Sedan Competition

7.3/10

Kia Optima Hybrid vs the Ford Fusion Hybrid

The Ford Fusion Hybrid is the cheapest car in this segment and this is the only positive aspect of this car. Fusion is way slower than the rest of its competitors. Packed with almost the same configuration as the KIA Optima Hybrid, it is really not in competition with its competitors especially Optima. Fusion might not be good with numbers, but it sure is affordable.

The Fusion is equipped with a 2.0L in-line engine but struggles to accelerate itself and is the slowest to reach 60mph in this segment. It took 8.5sec for Fusion to reach 60mph. The Fusion is powered by an engine that can produce up to 193hp of power, it is quite impressive and better than KIA Optima. Overall, Optima is way much better than the Fusion.

Kia Optima Hybrid vs Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

The new Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is quite expensive than KIA's Optima but is worth the hike. Sonata is packed with the same 2.0L in-line engine but delivers a way better performance than Optima. Sonata reaches 0mph to 60mph in 7.7sec, faster than the Optima. Sonata\u2019s 2.0L engine can produce 193hp of power, beating Optima just by a horsepower.

The heaviest in this segment, Sonata reaches 60mph in 0.4sec faster than the Optima. Sonata is gifted with the best braking in this segment. This hybrid brake lets it reach 0mph from 70mph in just 167ft. which is best-in-class. Sonata might not be a better choice if we have Optima in this section.

Kia Optima Hybrid vs Honda Accord Hybrid

A little bit expensive but Accord is the best option in this segment. The new Hona Accord Hybrid is powered with the same DOHC 2.0L in-line engine but churns out better numbers than any of its competitors. Honda released this car with a price tag of $29,605, which is not that high. The power transmission is done by a single-speed automatic transmission, not very impressive.

Accord is the lightest hybrid in this segment and fastest too. This hybrid could reach 60mph from naught in just 6.9sec. Accord for a hybrid comes packed with a lot of features and even the performance is satisfactory. In our opinion, Accord is the best option if you can adjust a bit with your budget.

2017 Kia Optima hybrid Sedan Final Verdict

The Kia Optima Hybrid is not very satisfying in terms of performance, but luxurious interiors and features make up for it. The EX trim shoots above the $30k margin, so the best option in this segment would the Honda Accord. The price of Accord is under $30k and keeps up with the performance and fuel economy as well. Our verdict would be if the budget allows going with Honda Accord. If the budget does not allow it, go with the Premium trim of Optima.
