Kia Motors is South Korea’s second-largest automobile manufacturer with over 3.3 million vehicle sales figures. Hyundai owns 33.88% stakes of Kia Motors valued at over US$6 billion. Their headquarter is situated in Seoul, the capital of South Korea.
The word “KIA” derives from the Sino-Korean characters which roughly translated as "Rising from the East. the company was founded in 1944 as Kyungsung Precision Industry which started from manufacturing steel tubing and bicycle parts. Later in 1951 moved to produce Korea's first domestic bicycle named the Samchully. In 1952, Kyungsung Precision Industry changed its name to Kia Industries. Taking a license from honda, Kia started manufacturing small motorcycles in 1957.
In the 1960s KIA expanded the lineup from motorcycles to three-wheeled cargo vehicles. This was one step closer to automobile manufacturing and by the start of the next decade, KIA started moving towards the same direction by building a facility to manufacture automobiles to turn their dream to produce automobiles into reality. By 1973 Kia was all set to open its first integrated automotive assembly plant, kept on building small cars until 1981. They developed the first internal-combustion gasoline engine. A year later, the first passenger car of Korea named Brisa. Upcoming models by the decade’s end were the Peugeot 604 and the Fiat 132.
Kia was facing financial difficulties in the late 90s which was preventing KIA from expanding its lineup. Hyundai acquired KIA which gave the brand a major upswing. It resulted in improved build quality, performance, and overall refinement. Increased warranty programs helped KIA to gain confidence in customers as reliability was a weak point in their cars. Currently, KIA is building great cars in every segment from coupes to crossovers. Major sales points are added due to stand out designs, value for money pricing, performance-focused options. The company also planning to invest in autonomous focused cars. Developing self-driving cars and technologies related to the same. The government is also supporting companies in taking further steps towards autonomous driveability.
The current lineup of KIA cars offers a wide range of engine options and plans are to make them even better with improved range and refinement. The company is working on launching 14 new eco models worldwide which include a mixture of hybrids, plug-in hybrids, full electric, fuel cell-powered cars by 2020. Connected and electric vehicles are the need or we can say demand of the future and Kia is taking care of it with investing in more eco-friendly and resource-conserving successors vehicles which are also cheaper to run in the day to day life.
