The NHTSA - National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is a government organization that tests the safety potential of the cars launched in the United States. The 2020 Jeep Renegade performed decently in the crash test conducted by the NHTSA by scoring an overall crash safety rating of 4 stars. However, all of the competitors scored the highest 5-star rating in the same crash test. This compact SUV scored a similar 4-star rating in the overall front crash test, with the same score for the front driver and passenger side. When it comes to the side crash test, the 2021 Jeep Renegade got a 4-star rating. This crash test combines both side barrier and side polestar rating into a single crash test rating. The SUV scored a decent 4 stars in the side barrier test, along with the best in class 5-star rating for the overall side pole star test. However, the rollover crash test rating wasn’t as impressive as its competitors, and the Renegade scored an average 3-star rating with no tip and 22.8% rollover risk.

The IIHS (The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) is an independent organization that rates the car based on the safety provided by the moniker during a crash. The 2020 Jeep Renegade performed quite averagely in the IIHS crash test in comparison to the competitors like the Honda HR-V, Ford Escape, and Mazda CX-3. However, the 2019 Renegade was considered as the 2019 Top Safety Pick by the esteemed organization. In the Crashworthiness section of the IIHS report, the 2020 Jeep Renegade scored a good rating in almost all the sections like the small overlap front:driver-side, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints & seats. However, for the small overlap front: passenger-side the Renegade only could score an acceptable rating. In the crash avoidance & mitigation section and for the child seat anchors also the 2020 Jeep Renegade scored on par for the segment rivals by scoring decently well. The 2021 Jeep Renegade hasn’t been crash-tested by the IIHS yet.
Small Overlap Front(Driver) Acceptable
Small Overlap Front(Passenger) Not Rated
Moderate Overlap Front Good
Side Good
Roof Strength Good
Head Restraints and Seats Acceptable
Headlights Poor
Front Crash Prevention Advance
Latch Ease of Use Marginal

The 2021 Jeep Renegade does not flaunt any major changes. Although, Jeep has amped up the safety features list of the Renegade as this SUV gets driver-assistance highlights such as blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and much more as standard for the new model year. Moreover, Jeep has also introduced two new trims for the 2021 Renegade, namely - 80th Anniversary Edition and Islander.

2021 Jeep Renegade Safety Features Explained

Coming to the safety kit provided by the Jeep, the 2021 Renegade comes with an array of all the basic safety features that you get with a compact SUV like the airbags, electronic stability control with rollover stability control, side-impact beams, the anti-lock braking system with electronic brake distribution, 3-point seat belts with pre-tensioners and height adjustability, and LATCH system to name a few.

When it comes to the more advanced active and passive safety features, the 2021 Jeep Renegade feels quite fully loaded. Even though this compact SUV is economically priced, Jeep has never cut corners on the safety front. Below are some of these safety feature provided on the 2021 Jeep Renegade:

  • Lane Departure Warning with Lane Keep Assist - It helps to keep you on the correct lane with the help of a camera that detects the lane markings. If the system detects a lane change without proper indication, the car will provide audible and visual warnings to the driver, and will further steer back the car to the original lane if the driver fails to respond to the warnings.

  • Full-Speed Forward Collision Warning with Active Braking - This function helps to warn the driver if it detects any obstacles on the path of the car. If the driver fails to respond to the warnings the car will automatically apply the brakes to reduce or eliminate the accident.

  • Blind Spot Monitoring System - This is a RADAR based system that helps to detect any vehicles that are present in the blindspot of the Renegade, and will give audible and visual warnings to alert the driver. Furthermore, this system will assist the steering to take the car back to its original lane if the driver doesn’t respond to the warnings.

  • Rear Park Assist System - The 2021 Jeep Renegade comes with a rear parking assist, with the help of an array of parking sensors. It can detect any obstacles at the rear while in a parking maneuver and can alert the driver on the MID. There will also be audible alerts if the car gets too close to the object.

  • Rear Cross Path Detection - RCPD is there to detect any cross-traffic like pedestrians, cyclists, and animals and will warn the driver if the distance gets too close. It will also apply the brakes for you if you do not respond on time.

  • Rear Back up Camera - A rear backup camera with adaptive guidelines is there to help you out during a reverse maneuver by showing a clear picture of where you are backing into.

  • Auto High Beam Headlamps - This feature automatically toggles between low beam and high beam. If there is any car coming in the opposite lane, the Renegade will toggle to the low beam and once the car passes by it switches back to the high beam.

  • Trailer Sway Control (TSC) - The Renegade uses an array of sensors to keep the trailer in line with the car so that you don’t lose control because of it. Not only does the Renegade ensure your safety, but it also keeps a check on the toys that you’re towing.

Is it Safe to Buy a 2021 Jeep Renegade?

The 2021 Jeep Renegade is a decent compact SUV when it comes to safety. It is very strongly built and coupled with great safety features, the Renegade is a good companion for city and highway drives. However, we aren’t very happy about the average score attained in the NHTSA and IIHS ratings.

They are also slightly lower than what the competition offers. But even then, the 2021 Jeep Renegade offers a great value for the price you pay and hence should be checked out if you are looking at a compact SUV.

Jeep Renegade, perfect for everyone

This is a great vehicle. I cant say anything bad about it. The only downfall it has is trunk space but i was willing to sacrifice the space for all the other wonderful specs.
