The Jeep Renegade is a subcompact SUV that takes a unique path to bring you a package that offers a mini Jeep with handsome styling and above-average off-road capabilities. With the rise in demand for the sub-compact SUVs, Jeep stepped into the segment in 2014 with its Renegade. But what makes the Renegade special is not just its off-roading capabilities but also that it offers all the sweet features like a removable sunroof, much like the other mainstream compact SUVs. The 2021 model year of the Renegade only comes with minor changes but they do manage to spice-up the line-up quite a bit. Its base trim is now safer as it the Renegade now offers many driver assistance features as standard. However, it now comes at an increased price of about $22,830 which is around $200 more expensive than its predecessor.

Overall Rating

The 2021 Jeep Renegade comes packed with a lot of features as well as a lot of trims to suit your needs. It focuses quite a lot on its off-roading capabilities which keeps alive Jeep’s age-old philosophy of developing an SUV that encourages you to not take the beaten path. However, this SUV still does no offer any hybrid or plug-in hybrid model which would have helped its cause in being more fuel-efficient. Nevertheless, Jeep offers the Trailhawk for the off-road enthusiast as the Renegade comes with a front-wheel-drive setup as standard. For a starting price of $22,830, the 2021 Renegade goes up against the Honda HR-V, Ford Escape & Mazda CX-3. But does it offer more for the price and is it a better SUV than its rivals? Let’s find out.

2021 Jeep Renegade Features

7.1/10

Jeep offers the 2021 Renegade SUV in many trims to suit your needs. While Jeep has not made any major changes to the 2021 mode, it has added some new trims to keep the excitement alive. The Renegade is offered in a total of seven trims namely, Sport, Jeepster, Latitude, Upland, Islander, Limited, and the Trailhawk. There is eighth trim as well on offer which Jeep has added this year called the 80th Anniversary addition. It offers Granite Crystal 19-inch wheels, trim-specific badging, and distinct interior appointments. Another trim added this year is the Islander which gets silver 19-inch rims, passive hands-free entry, panoramic sunroof, and special island-themed hood decal.

The Jeep Renegade does not classify its trims in a typical fashion. The trims are not just divided on the basis of features they offer but also on the basis of your lifestyle. The Trailhawk trim for example is for those who want to explore beyond the beaten path while the Limited trim offers the best in terms of looks as well as features.

2021 Jeep Renegade Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

Jeep as a carmaker has been into business for quite some time now but the Renegade is a relatively new product. It got introduced in the year 2014 and is still in its first generation. Renegade is also the first Jeep product to be produced exclusively outside of North America. Owned by the FCA group, every Jeep comes with a promise of the age of reliability as well as trustworthy mechanicals.

Reliability and ownership costs

The 2021 Jeep Renegade is a reliable little SUV that has scored well since its inception in terms of providing a fuss-free ownership experience. It has been rated by the most trusted car survey brand, J.D. Power, and has received a total score of 78 out of 100. While this score is completely acceptable it is not among the best in the segment. This means while the Jeep Renegade is a reliable car, there have been a few issues reported by its customers.

In terms of the overall ownership cost, the Jeep Renegade scores well but again is not the cheapest car to maintain in its segment. With the Japanese and the Koreans making new enteirs into the segment, they have taken the top spot when it comes to ownership cost. The figure mentioned above is of the previous model of the Jeep Renegade and hence you can expect a bit higher ownership cost over the course of 5-years.

Warranty

Jeep offers a basic warranty of 3 years or 36,000 miles on all its vehicles. The Jeep Renegade offers the same warranty package. You get an Anti-Corrosion Perforation warranty of 5 years which covers any body part that might get corroded. You also get a powertrain warranty which is covered for a period of 5 years or 60,000 miles. The warranty is certainly not the best in the segment as most of its rivals offer a battery warranty package.

Criteria

Period

Basic warranty

3 years/ 36,000 miles; whichever is earlier

Powertrain warranty

5 years/ 60,000 miles; whichever is earlier

24-hour roadside assistance

4 years/ unlimited miles;

Being part of the FCA group, Jeep manages to provide a widespread network of service and repair centers which means getting something fixed is an easy affair. You can also opt for Jeep’s extended warranty at an extra cost which shall cover the car for a maximum of 5 years or 100,000 miles.

Miles per dollar

The miles per dollar or MPD is helpful in determining how expensive or cheaper a car would be to run. With the average fuel cost being $3.40 for a gallon, the Jeep Renegade offers an MPD figure of about $7 with its combined MPG of 25.

2021 Jeep Renegade Buying Advice

As can be seen from the trim data, the Jeep Renegade provides a trim for anyone and everyone. As the trims are based on utility and needs, it is difficult to suggest a single trim for everyone. However, the Latitude trim of the Renegade strikes the best balance between price and feature. If you are looking for an off-roader then we strongly recommend you stick with the Trailhawk trim.

How about a used Jeep Renegade SUV?

If you want to save a few bucks then it is quite a wise decision to buy a used Jeep Renegade model. If you are someone who can very well afford the new model of this baby Jeep, then we recommend you to get one. But if you don’t have the budget for a brand new Renegade then we recommend you to get a 2018 model of the car. You can get your hands on one for 60%-70% of its original price which will be quite a bargain deal.

2021 Jeep Renegade Engine and Performance

7.0/10

The 2021 Jeep Renegade SUV is offered with two engine options with the lower trims getting the 2.4-liter four-cylinder unit. This engine is capable of churning out 180 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque which is not quite a lot for an off-road-focused SUV. This engine is quite capable of handling the city chores and will keep you satisfied if you plan on using it as your daily machine. The other engine available is the optional 1.3 liters four-cylinder unit which produces 177 horsepower and 210 lb-ft of torque.

This engine can be had for an extra price but produces lesser horsepower than the standard engine. The extra torque helps it attain better driveability off the road. However, this engine is not a game-changer but shall suffice for most of your needs. Both the engines come mated to a smooth 9-speed automatic transmission which performance as it should.

The 2021 model of the Jeep Renegade does not provide any updates in terms of performance when compared to the 2020 model. However, it is still the most powerful option in this comparison with the Ford Escape trailing it in terms of power and coming very close to it in terms of torque figure.

2021 Jeep Renegade SUV Acceleration And Braking Performance

The 2021 Jeep Renegade is meant to go off the road, but what about going fast? Well, it is not really made for going fast which is shown and proven with its 0-60 mph timings. This compact SUV is capable of going from 0-60 mph in about 9.0 seconds with its 1.3-liter turbocharged unit. As you would have guessed, the standard engine would be slower but only but a very small margin.

2021 Jeep Renegade SUV accelerate 0-60 mph in 9.0 sec

As Jeep has not updated the engine options, the 2021 model comes with the same brake rotors as the current one. It is the heaviest in its segment but still manages to provide sure-footed braking.

In terms of going from 0-60 mph, the Mazda CX-3 beats all its rivals. Its lighter weight helps it extensively and it manages to offer the best performance in its class. The Honda HR-V on the other hand is the slower compact SUV in this comparison with the Ford Escape being the second-fastest.

2021 Jeep Renegade Fuel Economy

7.9/10

Since its inception, the Jeep Renegade has never been known for its fuel economy. With no changes done in terms of the engine department, the 2021 model offers the same MPG figures as the 2020 model. The 2021 Renegade offers a combined MPG of 25, which is amongst the lowest in its class. The heavier weight of the SUV works against it in this aspect and even the 1.3-liter turbocharged engine does not offer a lot of improvement. Thus, the Renegade requires a hybrid version more than any of its rivals.

In terms of fuel efficiency, the Mazda CX-3 again takes the cake. Its lighter weight not only helps it in attaining better acceleration but also fuel efficiency. The second place is taken by the slow but fuel-efficient, Honda HR-V with the Ford Escape taking on the last position in terms of fuel efficiency.

2021 Jeep Renegade Interior

8.5/10

As the Jeep Renegade is more inclined towards being an off-roader and its interior offers many off-roading features. You get all-season floor mats along with washable interiors with many of its trims. The cabin is full of unique elements as well as hidden easter eggs. The quality of materials used is good for the most part with some areas getting soft-touch plastics. The quality of the upholstery is quite good as well and you have an option to choose between leather or cloth. However, the Renegade certainly needs more insulation materials as once you cross 70 mpg. The wind noise, as well as the tire noise, creep into the cabin and it gets quite noisy on the inside.

2021 Jeep Renegade SUV cockpit area

In terms of seating, the front two seats provide excellent support for your lower back as well as the under-thigh. You get a commanding view of the road up ahead and the seats keep you in your place with adequate bolstering. Once you step into the rear, however, it’s a completely different or rather opposite story.

The rear seats do not provide much legroom and taller passengers will find it difficult to be seated in them.

The cabin of the Renegade does not offer a lot of storage space and you do get some cubbies to store your knick-knacks. Where it really lacks behind its rivals is in terms of the cargo space which at 18.5 cubic feet does not really offer much. However, the rear seats fold down to liberate a healthy 50.8 cubic feet of space. The other cars in its segment just offer a more comfortable and spacious cabin to its passengers.

How’s the 2021 Jeep Renegade SUV’s infotainment system?

Jeep has updated the standard infotainment touchscreen size from 5 inches to 7 inches with the Renegade. Thus you get a 7-inch infotainment display that offers Jeep’s Uconnect interface. There is also an option to opt for a larger 8.4-inch touchscreen with higher trims.

2021 Jeep Renegade SUV infotainment screen

The system includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio and you can add a built-in navigation, and a Kenwood audio system on select models. The interface is quite smooth to operate and one of the best in its segment.

2021 Jeep Renegade Exterior

7.0/10

The 2021 Jeep Renegade is a lot less radical in terms of design than its bigger siblings. It offers a subtle yet interesting look which wants to suggest to you that it is an off-roader with its boxy design. Its looks are clearly inspired by the Wrangler and it gets easter eggs on the outside as well. At the front, you get the signature seven-slot grille with round headlights which try to give it a bold stance. On the sides, there are boxy lines and squared wheel arches which give it a tall profile. At the rear, you get a plainer and simple design with square taillights and a black bumper. Overall, there is no getting away from the fact that it is a small SUV that tries to offer funky styling and design cues.

The Jeep Renegade is certainly not the longest SUV in its class but it is certainly the widest. It is also the highest SUV in its class, thanks to its ground clearance and boxy design. If you are looking for the best road presence, you will get it with the Ford Escape. In terms of physical dimensions, it is certainly the biggest SUV here.

2021 Jeep Renegade Safety

8.0/10

The most noticeable change that the 2021 model of the Jeep Renegade has received is in terms of its safety. Jeep has made many driver’s assistance features as standard and the Renegade offers many advanced safety features. It got a total of four-stars in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) crash test which was performed with the 2020 model. You also get many optional safety features that enhance the overall safety of the car.

  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Front Parking Sensors
  • Semi-autonomous Parallel And Perpendicular Parking
  • Blind Spot And Lane Departure Warnings Accident Avoidance System
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring
  • Traction Control

2021 Jeep Renegade SUV Vs Honda HR-V

The Honda HR-V is quite a popular choice in its segment and it is not difficult to see why. It offers unmatched reliability of a Japanese motor along with an extensive features list. In comparison to the Renegade, the HR-V offers better fuel efficiency as well as a more comfortable ride.

Honda HR-V

Where the Renegade clearly wins is in terms of off-road capabilities.

2021 Jeep Renegade SUV Vs Ford Escape

The Ford Escape is another subcompact SUV that has been in the game for quite some time now. It offers quite an extensive features list along with excellent cabin quality. It gets Ford’s SYNC infotainment system which is certainly the best in the business along with a spacious cabin.

Ford Escape

In terms of fuel efficiency, it is neck and neck with the Renegade. It is a bigger car here but the Renegade offers an unconventional look whereas the Ford looks a bit too mainstream.

2021 Jeep Renegade Final Verdict

8.0/10

The 2021 Jeep Renegade SUV sets the bar high when it comes to an off-road capable sub-compact SUV. Jeep has given the Renegade everything you can expect from a car in its segment with top-notch safety features. With the 2021 model more of these features have been made standard which makes the lower trims safer for the driver. However, the biggest disadvantage of the Renegade is its price, especially with the lower trims as the rivals offer a better value for money. Nonetheless, if you are looking for a sub-compact SUV that offers a rugged look along with some good off-road capabilities, the Jeep Renegade should be at the top of your shopping list.

For its size, it chugs a lot of fuel. Other than this there is nothing I would change about my Renegade. The handling is good and has a small turning radius making it easy to maneuver in congested areas.

The driving experience is a mixed bag for me. Some things are good and some are not. On one hand, the ride quality is poor and it makes a lot of noise, and on the other, brakes are good, acceleration is decent and transmission great.

Nice and gas efficient car.

Pros - Has good efficiency, exterior bright LED, and peppy engine.

Cons - Limited storage area, not the best looking vehicle

Is it any good?

For its size, it chugs a lot of fuel. Other than this there is nothing I would change about my Renegade. The handling is good and has a small turning radius making it easy to maneuver in congested areas.

It is a Jeep but doesn’t like one. There is no roll in the corners no matter how tight a corner is (ok maybe a little after all its a Jeep) but still better than any other SUV I have driven. The ride qua...
