2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk SUV Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Updated on: April 23, 2020

Once crowned as the fastest SUV in the world, the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk must sound familiar to those who spend most of their weekends on a drag strip. This behemoth had so much power stuffed between the front fenders that even the best of sports cars had to think twice before poking its territory. With a brawny 6.2L, supercharged V8 discharging duties at the front, its sub-12-second quarter-mile timing established a benchmark for a vehicle of this class.

Sadly, this reign was soon demolished by a small but expensive contender from Sant’Agata Bolognese, Italy - The Lamborghini Urus. Nevertheless, Trackhawk’s massive road presence and rugged American looks are still unmatched, and further sweetening the deal, you get all of this under the $100k mark!

Considering its price tag, the BMW X5 M50i, Mercedes-AMG GLE63S, and the Jaguar F-Pace SVR are a few competitors worthy of being pitched against the mighty Trackhawk. On the other hand, the Trackhawk also remains to be the most expensive vehicle to wear the Jeep badge, ever! Should you go ahead with this choice? Let’s find out.

It sports a lot of top-notch equipment such as the six-piston Brembo Brakes, massive brake rotors, leather seats with heating and ventilation and this list goes on forever.

Since the Trackhawk is a trim in itself, there is no option to choose from. And you wouldn’t mind that too because it is loaded with everything that you’d want in a car, and then more.

2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk SUV Engine and Performance

9.0/10

The Trackhawk features a humongous 6.2L, supercharged V8 under the hood which spits out 707 horses at 6,000 RPM and throws a force of 645 lbs-ft on the crank. It is the same unit found in the Dodge Charger SRT but this one has been tweaked a little to serve the needs of an SUV.

2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk SUV Engine Bay

This engine has been untouched and carried over from the 2019 model. Frankly, it doesn't need any upgrades under the hood.

*2019 Figures used for reference purposes only

The Trackhawk is the unmatched champion of this department. Its power figures are miles ahead of the competition. The second to the Trackhawk is the Merc which is over a hundred horses less than the former. The Jag follows the Merc and the Bimmer is left for the last. While these are just numbers, the story could take a turn when the weight factor is also considered.

Acceleration

It'll take a lot of guts to flat-foot the accelerator, however, if you manage to do so, then the Trackhawk will catapult you across the 60 MPH barrier in a staggering 3.5 seconds. Would you believe that? If you’re still not scared to death, keeping the accelerator pinned will blast you across the quarter-mile barrier in just 11.6 seconds, which is sports car territory

Yet again, no one even dares to poke the Trackhawk’s timings here. Though the Jag F-Pace does come in quite close, it still has to do with the second position. Both BMW and Merc have the same acceleration figures but the Merc inches ahead of the Bimmer in a quarter-mile drag.

Braking

The braking duties have been undertaken by six-piston Brembos at the front and a four-piston set at the rear. The Trackhawk really impresses us here. It comes to a halt from 70 MPH in just 168 feet.

2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk SUV Front Brake is 15.75 in.

As commendable as that is, the diving front end does scare you off for a minute there. The bite offered from the Brembos is confidence-inspiring and it also does the job pretty well.

As for the competition, the Trackhawk’s heavyweight pulls it down to the third position in this comparison. The Jag’s braking performance comes as a surprise here. It is the lightest car and it still takes the maximum distance to come to a halt. The Bimmer and the Merc stack up head-to-head with each other in this department.

Ride and Handling

Handling is really not Trackhawk’s forte here. Throw it into a twisty and you’ll be all over the seats. The bolsters do ease up this discomfort up to quite an extent, but you’ll still be scared to do it again. However, in a straight line, you won’t even come to know when you have started doing triple-digit speeds. Yes, there is no external noise disrupting the cabin environment, but for that sonorous exhaust note let loose by the fire-breather.

2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk SUV Front View

The car feels sure-footed on the tarmac and the steering feedback is just fine. Some might argue that it is light and lacks feedback but we think it is just fine. Yes, it is light at low speeds but the weight gradually increases once the speedometer climbs up to higher speeds.

Off-Road

The Trackhawk is one of the few powerful SUVs that have no business wandering the trails of the wilderness. Its low ride height might make it easier to get in and out of the car, but it is definitely not suited for going off the tarmac. The AWD system is a modified version of the Quadra-Trac II system that optimizes the Trackhawks power delivery rather than manage that power in low traction conditions. The performance tires and Brembo brakes exclusive to the Trackhawk fade their effectiveness away as soon as you hit the dirt. The Selec-Terrain system also has fewer modes to choose from.

Towing Capacity

Out of all the SUVs in the Grand Cherokee lineup, the Trackhawk has the greatest pulling power of all. Thanks to its humungous 707-hp V8, the Trackhawk can tow up to 7,200 lbs worth of cargo from its rear hitch. Jeep ensures that it will be stable when towing such cargo, too. With numerous systems in place like Trailer Sway Control and Electronic Stability Management, you can be assured that your caravan won't end up down a cliff when accelerating up a hill.

While it may be a lot, the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk shares the top spot with the Mercedes AMG GLE-Class. It may have a smaller engine but its transmission and AWD system is more than enough to put its 577 horsepower to good use. Other SUVs in this segment simply fail to match the Trackhawk's immense power prowess.

2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk SUV Fuel Economy

4.0/10

As expected, the Trackhawk is not the most fuel-efficient of the lot. In fact, it gulps more fuel than anyone else in its segment. It can manage only a meager 11 miles in a gallon of fuel inside the city. Even though this figure escalates up to 18 miles per gallon on the highway, it is still less for the segment. That said, with 707 HP on tap, fuel economy had to take a hit here.

The Jaguar overpowers the competition clearly here. In spite of having the bigger engine than the Germans, it still manages to churn out a respectable figure per gallon of fuel. Yet again, the Germans stack up head-to-head here as well. The Merc just inches ahead of the Bimmer but that's not a lot of difference in the real world. The Grand Cherokee concludes this comparison with its position at the end of the lot.

2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk SUV Interior

7.5/10

The 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk has been fitted with sporty, leather-wrapped seats with large bolsters surrounding it. They do a fine job of holding you in one place without intervening too much. The seats are large, spacious and welcoming in nature. You do not have to struggle to get into the cabin, thanks to the large opening of the doors. The driver sits high, and outward visibility is outstanding. The added benefit of heated seats certainly elevates the sense of luxury and comfort.

2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk SUV Front Seats

Although the story changes when you take the Trackhawk into the twisties. Due to its soft suspension setup, the cabin roll just throws you around the bolsters. This could get a little uncomfortable when prolonged.

The rear seats are surprisingly spacious and accommodating even for the tall passengers. So much so, that they can even stretch their legs out if fatigue weighs in. However, the Trackhawk’s rear-wheel arcs hinder the opening of rear doors. The step-in height is also high, further increasing the inconvenience. As a remedy, you can always lower the suspension to encourage easier ingress/egress.

The Germans offer better, more comfortable seats than the Trackhawk and are also more spacious too. The Trackhawk is not less, the rivals are just a little more. However, the Jag emerges out as an exception with the least space inside.

  • Heated and ventilated front seats
  • Heated Steering Wheel
  • Dual-zone climate control

Infotainment System

The 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk comes equipped with an 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system, also known as “Uconnect”. This system is further mated to a 19-speaker unit from Harman Kardon which sounds phenomenal.

2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk SUV Has Infotainment Screen

However, some might find it to be a little extra-bassy. The picture quality on the touchscreen infotainment is crisp and high definition. It is further complemented by an easy and user-friendly interface. That said, there is more to it than what meets the eye. Some features are:

  • Android Auto
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Sirius XM Satellite navigation
  • 4G Wi-Fi Hotspot
  • Voice Recognition with Amazon Alexa
  • Bluetooth music streaming

Cargo Capacity

The Trackhawk’s aim was to blend in utility with sports car-like performance and that gets even more evident here. With the second row upright, the Trackhawk features a cargo volume of 36.3 cu.ft. We don’t think you would need more space than this for a weekend getaway.

2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk SUV Has Cargo Volume is 36.3 cu ft.

However, slam the rear row down-flat and you’ll be welcomed by a massive cargo capacity of 68.3 cu.ft.

Yes, the Trackhawk might get overshadowed by its rivals in this department, but let us remind you, you have come here for a performance SUV. The cargo-carrying capacity is just a bonus along with it. Even then, the Trackhawk sits at second place when pitted against the rivals. The Merc GLE63S trumps this lot with a wide margin leaving the X5 M50i and the F-Pace SVR at the last.

The Trackhawk’s blackened styling is what sets it apart from the rest of the lineup. Most of the parts have lost the chrome and instead have been blackened out. The front of the car looks massive with that typical Jeep specific 7-slot grill. Oh, and it's blackened too! The bi-xenon headlamps that come standard with the Trackhawk certainly elevate the sense of sportiness from the vehicle. You cannot help but notice the front Radar sensor that protrudes abruptly from the bottom half of the bumper. While you might think that the blackening out has been overdone, let us also mention that a few chrome elements have been left untouched too.

2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk SUV Side View

Move over to the side and you’ll realize that the Trackhawk is just long, very long. It sports a silhouette of a typical SUV with that boxy shape and upright C-Pillars. The massive wheel arcs also give a good road presence to the car.

As for the competition, the other SUVs clearly overshadow the Trackhawk here. However, do not just believe the numbers as in the real world the Trackhawk is just as equally spacious on the inside as any other vehicle from this comparison. The Jaguar, on the other hand, is an exception here with the biggest dimensions of the lot. The Bimmer sports the longest wheelbase, however.

2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk SUV Safety

5.0/10

Safety has now become a priority for buyers considering that the vehicles nowadays are getting faster and more powerful. And the Trackhawk doesn’t let you down either. Besides the re-tweaked chassis from the conventional Grand Cherokee, it is also loaded with some best-in-class safety tech that continuously stay alert just to ensure your safety.

What further seals the deal is the fact that all these features are offered as standard in the Trackhawk. Well, why not? It's the most expensive Jeep ever! Some outstanding features that define the Trackhawk’s segment are:

  • Electronic Limited Slip Differential with Traction Control (ESLD)
  • Hill-ascent and Hill-descent Control
  • Forward Collision Warning
  • LaneSense Lane Departure Warning
  • Advanced Brake Assist
  • Auto-high beam Headlamps

2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk SUV Competition

2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk vs BMW X5 M50i:

Backed by its rich German heritage, the BMW X5 M50i is much more reliable than the Trackhawk, hands down. It is well put-together and also feels planted when subjected to twisties. Furthermore, the 4.4L, V8 under the Bimmer’s hood offers good performance and also feels punchy. It is also bigger than the Trackhawk and offers a lot more passenger volume than the latter. However, come to a straight line and the Trackhawk just blows the Bimmer apart. It is cheaper to maintain and the accessibility of spare parts further brings things under Trackhawk’s favor.

2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk vs Mercedes-AMG GLE63S:

While looks are subjective, we feel that the Merc looks better than the Jeep and also has a better road presence than the latter. But, the Trackhawk’s exhaust note alone is enough to draw eyes towards you. On the inside, the Merc trumps the Trackhawk by a wide, wide margin. And if you take them both to a track, the Merc will leave the Trackhawk to dust however, this story will change drastically once they both are pitched against each other in a straight-line. That said, if you don’t mind paying the premium over Trackhawk’s MSRP, we believe that the Merc is a better package of the two.

2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk vs Jaguar F-Pace SVR:

Both the SUVs sport a supercharged unit discharging duties under their hoods. The Jag brings typical British touch to your garage while the Trackhawk flaunts a utilitarian cabin that is friendlier to get used to. Frankly, the Jag’s cabin is much more pleasing than the Trackhawk’s. Come to performance and the Jag is overpowered by the Jeep completely. The Jag is slightly more spacious than the latter but again, you will be compromising with a lot of performance. And not to forget, the Jag is also the more expensive one in this comparison. Out of the two, we think that the Trackhawk offers a better deal.

2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk SUV Final Verdict

Let’s face it, if you are one of those people who lives life a quarter-mile at a time -- The Grand Cherokee Trackhawk is the undefeated champ here. Along with outright performance, you also get the bonus of mediocre luxury and some exceptional tech-features that define the segment. Yes, the Germans might offer better handling and performance dynamics, but again, quarter-mile at a time right? Also, you get the Trackhawk at a much cheaper price and let’s not forget, it is cheaper to maintain too.

If you do not mind its disappointingly low fuel economy, we think there is no better option than the 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk.
