2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Updated on: October 12, 2020

The Jeep Grand Cherokee's current generation can be deemed a veteran in the automotive province since it has been on sale for close to a decade. Jeep has done a splendid job of keeping this well-known SUV fresh. The ace up the Jeep's sleeve is its ability to couple a comfortable cabin and lots of features with the courage to head off-road when asked to do so. Standout qualities include a best-in-class tow rating of 7,200 pounds (when properly equipped) and one of the most user-friendly infotainment systems around.

The Jeep Cherokee range begins with the Laredo at an MSRP of $32,045. With minimal changes, the next two trims are the Laredo E at $33,895 and the Upland at $35,800. Next is the Altitude at $37,945, the North Edition at $38,790, the Limited at $39,660, the Limited X at $44,755, and the Trailhawk at $44,760. Things get pricier and more luxurious after that with the Overland at $46,100, the High Altitude at $48,845, and finally the Summit at $51,400.

All versions use the V6 engine by default, but the V8 can be equipped on 4WD versions (from the Limited trim and above) for $3,395, although this upgrade does increase to $3,895 on the range-topping Summit trim.

Overall Rating

The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee blends rugged off-roading abilities with a sumptuous, high-class cabin. It can also take things a step further with the over-the-top horsepower numbers of the SRT and Trackhawk models. You should consider a Jeep Grand Cherokee if you plan to hit the off-road trails or want the brag-worthy performance of the SRT or Trackhawk editions. Additionally, the Grand Cherokee is less expensive and more upscale than the Kia Telluride and GMC Acadia.

2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

Jeep is an iconic brand, and driving one puts you in a class of drivers that have a thirst for adventure. These drivers are also looking for a reliable vehicle they can count on day in and day out. The combination of thrills and practicality is what makes the Jeep Grand Cherokee such a popular choice.

In addition to being one of the most recognizable SUV’s on the road, the Jeep Grand Cherokee offers peace of mind thanks to its solid build, capability, and performance features. It’s a reliable vehicle that provides the right balance of practicality and style.

Reliability and Ownership Costs

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is engineered to keep both driver and passengers safe and secure. According to Kelley Blue Book, the 2020 Jeep Cherokee is only about average when compared to its competitors like the Toyota RAV4 or the Hyundai Santa Fe. They also report that the new Jeep Cherokee is more reliable than models in the past. The 4th Generation Jeep Grand Cherokee scored 78 out of 100 in the J.D. Power report reliability. The Individual scores are listed below:

  • Quality and reliability: 80/100
  • Driving Experience: 85/100
  • Resale: 84/100
  • Dealership Experience: 69/100

Edmunds gave the 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee a score of 7.5 out of 10 in the Value and Ownership category, noting the vehicle’s high build quality. Their team found the most long-term value in the Limited and Trailhawk models.

This is the fourth-generation Grand Cherokee, and it’s been on sale since 2010, but it hasn’t been without its problems. There have been many issues with electrical glitches affecting the gearbox and infotainment system, although most of these will have been rectified under warranty. However, Jeep dealers don’t have the best reputation, which can be a frustrating part of ownership.

The 2020 Grand Cherokee retails just north of $32,000, which is above average for a full-size SUV. At the top end of the lineup is the Trackhawk, which carries a sticker price of about $86,700.The average annual repair cost is $666, which means it has average ownership costs.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee offers a similar warranty like other brands in the market. But Kia Telluride offers the best in class warranty which includes a more extended period and miles. The Grand Cherokee comes with a 36months/36,000miles limited warranty and more exceptional 60months/60,000miles Powertrain warranty. Also, there are 60months/60,000miles of 24-hour roadside assistance.

Jeep offers a number of servicing packages marketed under the Mopar brand. The Easy Care and Oil Care packs can both be specified at time of purchase. Jeep stands behind the Grand Cherokee with the Jeep Brand 5-year, 60,000-mile Powertrain Limited Warranty, giving drivers the confidence to go wherever the road takes them. The Jeep Brand warranty includes many extras to give you peace of mind.

Miles per Dollar

Jeep Grand Cherokee isn't that costly in terms of MPD. However, the high-end trims offer exceptional power and performance which makes them burn more fuel, thus low MPD. The base Grand Cherokee offers a fuel economy of 21 mpg combined and runs on regular gasoline. So, if the current price of the fuel is $2.2, then the MPD is around 9.54. For a 295hp SUV, this is good enough.

2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee Buying Advice

Choosing a particular Grand Cherokee trim isn't easy. All the trims are unique in their own way be it styling, design, packages, technology, and performance. Most owners will be happy with a midlevel Grand Cherokee. There are plenty of features for the class and lots of available options if you want to upgrade or customize your Jeep. For a bit more off-road capability and flare, though, we'd go with the Trailhawk trim level.

Is buying a used Jeep Grand Cherokee a good idea?

First of all, it retains its value for a really long time. The value reduction is around 15% to 20%, so you can get a 2 or 3-year-old model easily for cheap. Purchasing a used model can save you money, and you'll still get a nearly identical SUV. Models that are only a few years older closely mirror a new Grand Cherokee in terms of styling and features, and there are a few revisions worth noting.

2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee Engine and Performance

9.0/10

The Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo and Limited trims get a 3.6L V6 engine with 293hp and 260lb-ft of torque. The Trailhawk, Overland and the Summit trims get two engines: a 295hp 3.6L V6 and a 360hp 5.7L V-8 engine. The high-end trim, the SRT is powered by a 6.4L 475hp V-8 engine with 470lb-ft of torque and the top trim.

The Trackhawk is a beast with its famous 6.2L Hemi engine that outputs 707hp of power and 645lb-ft torque. All the trims get an 8-speed auto w/od manual transmission. And for off-road capabilities, the Quad-Trac 4WD system is available on option (standard on top trims).

The Grand Cherokee outputs the maximum power against its rivals. However, the Telluride is ahead in terms of sheer torque. All the SUVs have an 8-speed auto w/od manual except the GMC Acadia which has a 9-speed auto w/od. The Grand Cherokee is the only RWD SUV where all SUVs are FWD as standard.

2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee Acceleration and Braking Performance

The entry-level trim of Jeep Grand Cherokee, the Laredo can sprint 0-60 mph in 6.7 seconds and one of the most efficient trim in the lineup. The SRT trim, with its 475hp V-8 on the other hand, can sprint much faster and can do a 0-60 mph run in just 4.4 seconds. The top trim, Trackhawk with its 707hp Hemi takes mere 3.5 seconds to do a 0-60mph run.

2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee brake rotors

The Jeep Grand Cherokee needs 125-130 feet to halt from 60 mph. This distance is more trivial if we consider the size and weight of the Grand Cherokee.

2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee Interior

7.5/10

The Grand Cherokee is one of the posh SUVs by Jeep. The seats are power-adjustable with lumbar support and heating function. The black Tungsten accent stitching looks beautiful. Moving on to the dashboard, a sophisticated state of the art assembly that might look confusing at first glance but is practical and intuitive to use.

The leather-wrapped steering wheel looks great and gets telescopic and auto tilt function. The overall interior is spacious and classy. The dual-pane sunroof is the USP of Jeep vehicles. 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee Exterior

9.0/10

The Grand Cherokee has a substantial, rugged look to it that is entirely in tune with its on- and off-road abilities. The Chunky tires and seven-slot grille are classic Jeep traits, as are the pronounced wheel arches. The boxy design of the Grand Cherokee looks way better than the other SUVs.

2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee Safety

7.1/10

The NHTSA's crash-test results yielded an overall five-star safety rating, with a four-star rating for the frontal crash. The IIHS' findings were less optimistic, though, where the Jeep had Good ratings for most tests but a Marginal result for the driver-side small overlap front test and a more concerning Poor score for the same test on the passenger side.

The Grand Cherokee features Protech I that provides Blind-spot monitoring, Rear cross-traffic protection, and Rear parking camera with parking assist. The Protech II provides Forward collision mitigation, Active brake assist, and Lane departure warning. The Advance Protech II provides additional safety with Adaptive cruise control, Perpendicular parking assist, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. Besides all of this, there are 7 airbags for your safety inside the cabin.

2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee Competition

7.0/10

2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee vs 2020 Kia Telluride

The Kia Telluride is one of the few midsize SUVs that can go toe-to-toe with the Grand Cherokee on a demanding off-road course. For the dedicated adventurer, we recommend taking a close look at both the Telluride and the Grand Cherokee to see which SUV best fits your needs.

 2020 Kia Telluride

For those who plan to keep it on the pavement, the Jeep makes more sense. It has a lower starting price, a comfier ride, and a more upscale interior.

2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee vs 2020 GMC Acadia

The GMC Acadia and Jeep Grand Cherokee are corporate cousins, both built by FCA. They are tailored to different audiences, though, so picking the best one for you depends on your needs.

2020 GMC Acadia

Go with the Acadia if you want three rows of seats, more cargo space than the Jeep offers, and a higher tow rating. Otherwise, pick the Grand Cherokee. Its handling is more composed, and it earns a better-predicted reliability rating.

2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee Final Verdict

8.0/10

The Jeep Grand Cherokee impresses with style and performance, but lags behind in safety and fuel economy. While the Grand Cherokee was once a class leader, its age is starting to show. It's still sturdy and very off-road-capable, but we recommend upgrading from the standard V6 engine to one of the available V8 powertrains for a bit more gusto.

Pretty smooth and refined sticking to the asphalt like a small car. Handling is also quite responsive along with impressive gas average. With the size and built it carries, it's remarkable how easy it is to maneuver it around in city.

Not so grand, Grand Cherokee.

Gas guzzler! I know good performance comes at the cost of gas, but It isn’t that powerful where I could willingly compromise on mileage.

Very agile for an SUV. It is an amazing vehicle to drive. A nice daily driver with all the necessary features.
