2020 Jaguar XE Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Karan Rawat's image

Karan Rawat Automotive Journalist Updated on: December 8, 2019

The 2020 Jaguar XE is here with a mid-cycle refresh that accompanies enhanced exterior design and sporty driving dynamics. It may not be best in class, but it has the ingredients to top the list for some buyers. Under the hood, however, Jaguar has actually reduced the XE's engine options. Gone is the supercharged V6, and the diesel flies to Europe exclusively for 2020. But that helps streamline the U.S. model to just two trims with two engines: a P250 model producing 246 horsepower (with rear- and all-wheel drive), and a P300 model pumping out 296 horses (with all-wheel drive only)

The XE compact sedan must compete with a new-generation BMW 3 Series that seeks to regain more of its mojo, a strong Mercedes C-Class, the ever-improving Audi A4, and other contenders in a crowded and diverse field that range from the Alfa Romeo Giulia to the Volvo S60.

Jaguar has a big lineup of vehicles these and their iconic XE sedan is lost somewhere but for 2020 JLE has given a variety of updates this year in the hopes of boosting its appeal. Jaguar made several interior revisions in 2017 including cupholder covers similar to the XF, In-Control display and dashboard LCD Display with maximum pixels, overhauled, XF like interface for center console display. In-control Touch Pro got introduced as standard. The refreshed 2020 XE is expected to receive a hybrid option along with the diesel and gasoline engine choices currently available. The XE is an impressive package thanks to its powerful engines, low center of gravity, and lightweight aluminum chassis platform.

Which trim to choose?

The 2020 Jaguar XE comes in two trims: S and R-Dynamic. Both trims feature a turbocharged four-cylinder engine (the R-Dynamic has more power) and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The standard and available features are essentially the same in each trim, so the only real decision you need to make is whether you think the R-Dynamic's extra horsepower and sportier feel are worth the price jump over the base trim.

2020 Jaguar XE Engine

The XE now comes with the 2.0-liter Ingenium gas unit offers two outputs, with a 246(known as the P250)- and a 296 (P300)-horsepower model being offered in the R dynamic trim. The eight-speed automatic transmission remains as standard on the XE, as does the rear-wheel-drive arrangement. The optional AWD system maintains the XE’s rear-wheel-drive handling feels and agility but enhances performance thanks to the Intelligent Driveline Dynamics technology. The AWD sedan also provides better traction in all weather conditions. Jaguar has also discontinued the XE's previous V6 and diesel engines and they are now exclusive for European markets.

2020 Jaguar XE Engine Bay

Both engines produce an abundance of power for everyday driving, but the P300's more horsepower absolutely makes a difference when it's time to accelerate. Also, the shifts from the 8-speed automatic transmission are very precise, gear changes are quick and smooth no matter what you throw at it. Now because of the   Dynamic mode standard on all XE models, the sedan has a sportier personality and more active throttle response in all trims. The Adaptive Dynamics system greatly advances performance by uniformly adjusts the dampers, but this feature is optional.

Power (hp) 247 180 241 190
Torque (lb-ft) 269 200 273 236

Overall, not much has changed in this department, but the XE remains competitive against German sedans like the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and Audi A4. Much the same as its opponents, the Jaguar XE accompanies 2.0 L Turbocharged Inline 4 chamber motor, however, the XE leads in term of pull yield estimated at 247 hp while Audi A4 and BMW 3 arrangement check-in at around 190 hp. Torque also is on the higher side in this fragment at 269 lb-ft just being outperformed by Mercedes Benz C Class at 273 lb.- ft.

How Fast is it?

There is not much of a difference between the P300 to justify the rise in price, even though Jaguar declares the P300 will reach 60 mph in 5.4 seconds compared to the P250's 6.2 seconds. It's possible that the P300's 175-pound weight penalty from the AWD elements evens the playing field some. As said above the all-wheel-drive variant will be much better in bad weather and also helps in better acceleration.

Models Jaguar XE BMW 3-Series Mercedes-Benz C Class Audi A4
0-60 MPH 6.0 seconds 7.1 seconds 6.2 seconds 6.8 seconds
Quarter Mile 14.7 seconds 15.7 seconds 14.7 seconds 15.2 seconds
Engine Displacement 2.0L 2.0L 2.0L 2.0L

The XE devastates each adversary with regard to increasing speed. In correlation, just Mercedes-Benz C Class approaches XE with a 0-60 MPH speed of 6.2 seconds. The Audi A4 and BMW 3-arrangement take 6.8 seconds and 7.1 seconds to achieve 60 MPH from the halt, missing out pretty gravely to the Jaguar XE.

How well does it Ride and Handle?

The newly designed Jaguar XE lineup is one of the best handling sedans you can have.  Each XE pairs its nimble cornering abilities with a supple ride quality, even over rough pavement. The output from the 2.0-liter Ingenium gas engine is phenomenal which is paired with a slick-shifting 8-speed automatic transmission. You can select from various driving modes that come with torque vectoring to suit your requirements and adjust according to your driving style for maximum grip.

2020 Jaguar XE Driving Experience

The XE's ride quality remains stable, which is remarkable for a car that corners with such enthusiasm. The cabin is also pleasantly quiet at highway speeds and on rougher surfaces. The suspension is typical Jaguar Sports suspension which feels a bit on the harsher side but gets the work done at the end of the day. The wheels also tend to lose some traction during heavy winters, nothing some new wheels can’t solve, but for the rest of the year, cruising with this car won’t be a problem.

What to expect on the Braking front?

Brakes are exactly what you want: They work so effortlessly that you don't notice them, with no grabbiness or jerkiness. Pedal feels well-modulated and when stopping from city speeds, you will not have any hassles. However, we would have expected a slightly better brake setup, for that added effectiveness, when stopping from high speeds.

2020 Jaguar XE Disk Rotors

The brakes remain consistent after heavy and prolonged use. It only takes 123 feet to stop from 60 mph which is above average for a car of this segment.

Rear Brake Dia (in) 12.8 11.8 11.8 11.8
60-0 MPH (feet) 123 123 131 105

Audi A4 takes just 105 feet to come to stop from 60 MPH which is by a wide margin the best in contrast with its adversaries. The 3-Series is at standard with the Jaguar XE with regards to 60-0 MPH time while the C Class has the least proficient braking in light of the additional weight it conveys.

2020 Jaguar XE Fuel Economy

5.3/10

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) puts fuel consumption at 25 miles per gallon in the city, 34 mpg on the highway and 28 mpg in combined driving (RWD) and 24 mpg city/34 mpg hwy/28 mpg combined (AWD). The XE's engine stop-start function is something you'll want to cripple. It's distractingly obtrusive and unresponsive, building a frustrating driving experience in stop-and-go traffic.

City (MPG) 25 24 24 27
Highway (MPG) 34 34 33 37
Combined (MPG) 28 27 27 31

Of course, Audi A4 gives you a better economy at 31 MPG however Jaguar XE still figures out how to contend in Eco mode. The vehicle effectively gives an efficiency close to 40 MPG on the interstate when driven in Eco mode. Presently, that is an amazing figure directly there.

2020 Jaguar XE Interior

6.9/10

There are no drastic changes in the exterior design but enter the Jaguar XE, and you will notice a host of differences. First of all, you will notice a new dual-screen display, with the bottom screen handling climate control duties and the top screen taking over the rest of the infotainment functions. It's attractive, but unfortunately, it still has some of the slowest responses in the industry.

2020 Jaguar XE Sedan Seats

Upfront, the seats provide loads of space and comfort for people of all shapes and sizes. The ample side bolstering also keeps you in place when going around fast turns. The rear seats are a bit cramped, although they still do fine by its class standards. The cabin feels quite roomy and the seat fabric is very plush, making you feel comfortable the moment you enter inside.

Second Leg Room (in) 35.0 35.1 35.2 35.7
Second Shoulder Room (in) 54.7 55.1 55 54.5

The Audi A4 has the best interiors and ride quality in this class without a doubt. The Mercedes runs a close second, and to the untrained eye, the difference won’t even be visible. The BMW has great interiors, but ride quality brings the comfort levels significantly down.

What does the Infotainment system feel like?

What does carry over from the I-Pace (and some Range Rovers) is Jaguar’s optional 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and what the brand calls its " InControl Touch Pro Duo" infotainment display. Up top, there's a 10.0-inch touchscreen that mimics a modern smartphone in both responsiveness and quality of graphics. This is where you'll find things like the navigation system and stereo. Meanwhile, the lower 5.5-inch screen adjusts things like climate and seating controls, with two dials on either side to alter fan speed and temperature. Some of the Key Features of the Infotainment are :

2020 Jaguar XE Sedan Infotainment System

  • 8.0-inch touch screen display (10.2-inch for the InControl Touch Pro)
  • 17 speaker Meridian audio system
  • 3G data connectivity (Optional)
  • Wi-Fi hotspot (Optional)
  • AUX and USB Input
  • Bluetooth connectivity

How much Cargo can you carry in the XE?

In terms of the trunk capacity, Jaguar XE easily beats the competition with its 15.9 cubic feet. In comparison, the Audi A4 and BMW 3 series only have 13 cubic feet trunk while the Mercedes Benz C class falls further behind.

2020 Jaguar XE Sedan Cargo Space

However, this huge trunk volume is limited by the narrow trunk opening given in the XE which is a big turn-off if you want to pack some big stuff.

 Models Jaguar XE BMW 3-Series Mercedes-Benz C-Class Audi A4
Trunk Volume (ft3) 14.7 13 12.6 13

The competition offers even poorer space in the trunk, and it is apparent that these cars weren’t built for the occasional weekend family trip. They were designed for the urban sprawl, which means they must be able to manage groceries, which they easily do (obviously).

Standout features on the inside?

Since the XE gets a complete redesign for 2020, you can expect a hefty set of features on the inside. Some of the notable interior features include the following

  • Soft grain leather steering wheel
  • Two-zone climate control
  • Ambient interior lighting
  • 12-way electric adjustable front seats
  • 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats with center armrest
  • Ebony grained leather seats with Ebony interiors

2020 Jaguar XE Exterior

6.0/10

The XE launched with great promise in 2015, but it had a lot of hard plastic packed into an otherwise beautiful shape. It's hardly a sales contender, selling about 4,700 in the U.S. last year. For the 2020 refresh, designers have further enhanced the look with slimmer LED headlights, a wider but slimmer grille at the end of the long hood, and new bumpers. With the updated styling up front, smoother profile, and revised rear valance improve the drag coefficient in the top trim level from a very good 0.26 to an exceptional 0.25.

2020 Jaguar XE Sedan Side View

While the front fascia has plenty of new features to brag about, the XE’s profile carries over mostly unchanged. Also, changes are evident around back, beginning with narrower taillights that are definitely inspired by the F-Type. Observe closely,  and you’ ll also see a very small spoiler on top of the trunk lid. By far the most important change here is the new bumper, which features big vents on each side, connected by a slender opening just above the diffuser.

The BMW 3-series is the only car that manages to be lighter than the Jag, although even then it isn’t particularly light. The other two are significantly heavier, and the Audi is also significantly larger in dimensions too.

Noteworthy Features on the Outside?

Some of the prominent exterior features are :

  • Adaptive Xenon headlights
  • Jaguar’s signature ‘J’ Blade Daytime Running lights
  • Electric Tilt and Slide Moonroof
  • All LED headlights (DRLs are optional)

2020 Jaguar XE Safety

Security has not been imperiled in the XE as you get the driver and front traveler airbags with traveler situate inhabitant locator, side airbags for both front and back with full-length side window blind airbags. • Airbags - driver and front passenger, with seat occupant detector for passenger
  • Front side airbags

2020 Jaguar XE Competition

Jaguar XE vs BMW 3 Series

2020 BMW 3 Series

For performance enthusiasts, Jaguar XE seems to be a more potent option than the BMW-3 series especially at the base price but if you go higher on the price ladder, BMW has a lot more to offer with huge cabin space and a more intuitive infotainment system than the XE. The added luxury features in BMW easily win over Jaguar’s beefier engine. The best budget driver’s car has changed a lot in recent years and has also become significantly soft, or dare I say, accommodating. The older BMWs were much focused angry cars, which when driven enthusiastically, would see the passengers lose their lunches in a not-very-nice way. The BMWs of today are much easier to live with and is quite close to the Jaguar in terms of ride and handling. The biggest deciding factor here would be your choice of brand, between German and British Engineering.

Jaguar XE vs Audi A4

2020 Audi A4

In terms of performance of both Audi A4 and Jaguar XE stand shoulder to shoulder so you can’t go wrong with either of them but the lack of luxury in Jaguar XE shows up over and again which makes you switch to the Audi A4, whose interior feels far more worth the price you are paying. You also get minor improvements like a new infotainment system and Apple CarPlay connectivity. Traditionally, Audi’s have been the first choice for people who are looking for an understated car, one that offers great luxury, but can still easily blend with the other cars in the parking lot. It is very conservative in its design, as opposed to the Jaguar, which has bold curves and sleek lines, and which begs for the onlookers to keep their eyes glued on it. If you want your ride to draw attention, the Audi isn’t for you.

Jaguar XE vs Mercedes Benz C Class

2020 Mercedes-Benz C class sedan

The new Mercedes Benz C Class may not be as fast as the Jaguar XE but what you get is one of the classiest cabins in the segment that screams premium all over. You also get additional safety features like Driver Drowsiness Monitoring system and the company’s signature Collision Prevention Assist. The Mercedes is the most recognizable brand in the world and would probably be on the top of every car enthusiasts list. Their entry-level C-class never feels like a cut-price E-class, even though it should, which is a testament to their build quality. The biggest draw away from the 3-point star is the price, which is significantly more than the XE, which if you think about it, defeats the purpose of being an entry

2020 Jaguar XE Final Verdict

Planned as a rival for Germany’s highly successful premium compact sedans, the XE brought Jaguar back into a segment that it abandoned a decade ago. The 2020 Jaguar gets some of the nice updates which makes it a worthy upgrade. People looking for a well to drive family sedan with plenty of creature comforts will be happy with the XE. Added tech and improved styling make the XE, finally, a serious option in this hyper-competitive class.
