Expert Review

8.3

Overall Rating

The 2020 Jaguar E-Pace is a luxury compact SUV built on a modified JLR D8 platform used by big guns like Range Rover Evoque and Land Rover Discovery Sport. The E-Pace is more of a passenger-friendly package from the brand that incorporated elements from its famed F-Type sports car. The vehicle has got all the looks and racing DNA from its lineage, but will it be enough to take on its rivals in the segment?

On breaking down the vehicle’s features, one can observe that it is powered by a potent and throaty 2.0 liter Inline 4-cylinder Turbocharged engine that churns out 248 bhp @ 5500rpm with a max torque output of 269 lb-ft @ 1350rpm. The vehicle is equipped with a 9-speed automatic transmission and All-Wheel Drive is made standard across all trims. The vehicle is offered on six trim levels with a base price of 39950USD for the entry-level trim all the way up to 52950USD for the loaded R-Dynamic variant. The vehicle comes with fewer standard features. With advanced safety features and luxury elements being offered as optional packages, adding it to your build certainly skyrockets the cost of the vehicle.

Since this lineup is only two years old, the 2020 version doesn't get any major upgrades under its hood. The 2020 version saw a few subtle design changes and more refined interior options. The starting price goes up by 1000USD when compared to the previous year thanks to the capitalist economy we live in which is to be blamed. Like every other manufacturer, Jaguar made Apple Carplay and Google Android Auto as standard in this year’s offering.

Without any competition, race wouldn’t be fun at all. The Jag’s rival lineup includes Mercedes Benz GLA 250, Volvo XC40 and the BMW X1. The E-Pace squashes down its competition in terms of sheer power and sporty dynamics. But when the price becomes a deciding factor, going for the XC40 or X1 is an appropriate choice for they offer more bang for the buck. If sporting that Jag badge is more than enough reason for you to buy the wild cat, then no one is stopping you.

2020 Jaguar E-PACE Features

8.0/10

The E-Pace is offered on six trim levels with two engine options. The P250, P250 SE and P250 Checkered Flag Limited Edition sport a modest 246 bhp 2.0L 4-cylinder Turbocharged engine, while the P300 R-Dynamic S, SE and HSE variants sport a more potent, fine-tuned 296 bhp 2.0L 4-cylinder Turbocharged engine. The R-Dynamic models have torque vectoring tech for improved handling. The All-Wheel-Drive is made standard across all trims. Standard safety features like Emergency Braking Assist and Lane Keep Assist are offered from the base trim while more advanced Active Assist features are offered as optional packages.

Trim to choose?

Unless you are a fan of Photon Red exterior paint, we suggest you choose the P300 R-Dynamic SE with the following options -Drive Pro Pack, Park Pro Pack, Cold Climate Pack, Air Quality monitor, Cabin Air Ionization, Adaptive Dynamics, Configurable Ambient Interior Lighting, Auto High Beam Assist and Activity Key. Your ideal build will cost around 56000USD. If you are tight on budget but still need that Jag in your garage, We would suggest you to choose the base P250 trim with Drive Pro & Park Pro Pack and of course the Meridian Sound System. Your budget build will cost you 43700USD, a nominal price for the features offered.

2020 Jaguar E-PACE Engine and Performance

10/10

The 2020 Jaguar E-Pace is powered by a 2.0L Inline 4-cylinder Turbocharged engine that produces 246 bhp @5500rpm with a max torque of 269 lb-ft @1350rpm. It is coupled with a 9-speed automatic transmission. The R-Dynamic engine variant has a 50 bhp power bump thanks to its refined engine performance but for such a small increase in power and improved handling you have to burn nearly 7000USD which is not a good trade. The Jag is closely followed by BMW X1 in terms of power which sports a similar 2.0L Inline 4-cylinder TwinTurbo engine producing 228 bhp @5000rpm. For an 18 bhp difference in power, the price gap is huge- almost 4500USD.

In comparison with its competitors, E-Pace certainly tops the table with its performance figures and AWD being offered as standard is an added bonus. But BMW manages to perform almost similarly at a much lower price. Plus, a fully loaded BMW X1 costs around 42000USD a worthy trade in our perspective. The other two competitors- Mercedes Benz GLA 250 and Volvo XC40 lack the brute power to go against the likes of the E-Pace. But unlike the Jaguar, the other two won’t burn a hole in your pocket. But bigger numbers don’t necessarily mean better performance! Let us see if the E-Pace fares well on the acceleration front.

Acceleration - Nothing is rational about it! Oh boy! How do they do it?

The Jaguar E-Pace makes a quick dash from 0-60 MPH in just 6.7 seconds despite its heavyweight. It can reach a top speed of 143MPH limited electronically. Inspite of being the most powerful of the lot, it is 0.1 seconds slower than the BMW X1 which indicates that the turbo on the E-Pace takes a while to kick in.

From the table, you can see the Volvo is the slowest on the 0-60MPH line at 7.8 seconds. The emission figure is the lowest on the BMW while the Jaguar is smoking the competition literally with the highest CO2 emissions. The Jaguar P300 engine makes the E-Pace go from 0-60 MPH in 6.1 seconds, the quickest in the competition lineup but it is not worth the extra 6600USD for shaving off a few tenths of a second. From the above stats, we can see that, cumulatively the BMW is a clear winner on the acceleration front proving that bigger numbers don’t necessarily mean better performance.

Ride and Handling

With its sporty DNA and great driving dynamics, this vehicle is the most fun to drive among its competition. The 18-inch wheels provide a comfortable and composed ride while the 20-inch wheels can make the ride feel bumpy. The R-Design variant has enhanced handling because of the use of the Active Driveline system coupled with torque vectoring technology. It makes sure that the vehicle stays gripped to the ground at all times. The feedback on the steering is decent and its precise steering is what makes it a fun vehicle to drive in the first place. If you opt for the Adaptive Dynamics system, a perfect balance between precision dynamics and comfort ride is chosen for you based on the external conditions & your driving style. With a configurable dynamics package added to your build, your ride quality can be tuned to your liking.

2020 Jaguar E-PACE SUV Front View

Braking - No reeks of burnt pads

The Jaguar E-Pace has the longest stopping distance of 130 feet on a straight line from 60-0MPH while the Mercedes GLA managed to get it done in just 120 feet. The brake rotors are modest in size comparable to that of the competition. The braking system can feel a bit jerky but the responsiveness will improve on regular pressure application. In short, the braking needs some getting used to. With Emergency Braking safety feature offered as a standard across all trims, an imminent with a vehicle/ pedestrian in the front can be mitigated and with brake assist feature it enhances braking by boosting brake pressure to stop the vehicle in time.

2020 Jaguar E-PACE SUV Has Front Brake is 13.7 in.

From the table, it can be observed that the rivals managed to do better on the braking performance front. It is because the E-Pace has more added weight and thus needs more time to negate the inertia buildup.

2020 Jaguar E-PACE Fuel Economy

7.0/10

The fuel expenses can suck your wallet when you own the E-Pace. It has the lowest gas mileage among its competition. Its added weight is the reason why the fuel economy is dragged to the ground if you had to take a guess. With an 18.1-gallon fuel tank, it has the highest fuel capacity among its competition.

From the above data, one can observe that the Mercedes GLA is the most economical of all but its relatively smaller fuel tank affects the range. If you take range into account in addition to the fuel economy, BMW X1 is again a winner. The Volvo XC40, on the other hand, finds its place somewhere in the middle with decent gas mileage but a low range.

2020 Jaguar E-PACE Interior

7.0/10

Oh! You have to love the Jags for their exceptionally beautiful interiors. With the optional Ambient Interior Lighting package, one can customize the interior lighting according to their moods. The cabin air qualitymonitor and ionization system can make you feel refreshed all the time. The leather seating and steering cover make your interior feel posh. There is also two-zone automatic climate control to keep you comfortable. The presence of hard plastics on the dashboard can make you have mixed feelings on the interior but come on it's a Jag you are driving and for an entry-level SUV, it should be alright. The addition of a digital instrument cluster and Heads Up Display can be more appealing if you had opted for it. The addition of the above features can send the price of the vehicle north of 50000USD easily. So be easy on that if you are on a budget.

Seating and comfort - Floating through on cloud nine seats

If you had opted for the Windsor leather, the delicate touch can make you go gaga over it. The seating, in general, is comfortable and with the power-adjustable arrangement, you can adjust it to your needs. There is also the option to add heating to your seats. In comparison with its rivals, the BMW X1 offers the most room for passenger seating. The E-Pace can accommodate a maximum of five passengers with enough room for each of them to carry hand luggage. The E-Pace offers the lowest headroom which can prove to be difficult even for adults of moderate height to get in with ease. The rear seating space is a bit cramped which can be uncomfortable for passengers in case of a long drive.

9.0/10

With a sleek and sporty exterior, this compact SUV certainly looks stylish and appeals to the masses. If you opt for the black exterior pack, it adds beauty to its wilderness. For a second, a quick glance at the vehicle from the side view will remind you of the Range Rover Evoque for E-Pace has the same lines as the former. Those 18-inch multispoke alloy wheels definitely look stunning but the 20 inch Dark Satin Gray Alloy Wheels is the absolute beauty. You are also given the option to choose between Black Contrast Roof or Fixed Panoramic Roof for an added cost. All trims come with standard All Season Tires to tackle any weather. Exclusive Photon Red Paint option is available if you had chosen the Checkered Flag Limited Edition trim.

Design and dimension

The E-Pace is the smallest in terms of length but has greater width and height. It has modest ground clearance enough to take on most offroads. The wheelbase is comparable with that of its competition. It is definitely heavy on the downside while its competitors are much, much lighter. The heavyweight of the E-Pace took a toil on its fuel economy, acceleration figures and what not.

2020 Jaguar E-PACE Safety

9.0/10

The E-Pace comes with a lot of standard safety features and the vehicle can be built with more advanced safety features from the Jaguar’s arsenal. The E-Pace positioned itself as a luxury compact SUV with more than a pinch of sportiness. NHTSA and IIHS have not crash-tested the vehicle yet. However, with so many driver assistance systems offered both as standard as well as optional, your safety is guaranteed if you drive responsibly. In terms of reliability, the brand offers a 5-year complimentary scheduled maintenance.

Jaguar E-Pace vs Mercedes Benz GLA 250

The Mercedes GLA is all about luxury and styling with little to moderate regard for performance figures. The E-Pace, on the other hand, manages to strike a balance between luxury and performance although luxury add ons can prove to be a bit costlier. Between the two of them, the GLA is more economical in terms of gas mileage & pricing and it only makes sense that the GLA is a more attractive offer being it a passenger car.

Jaguar E-Pace vs Volvo XC40

The Volvo XC40 offers first-class cabin space and upscale interiors but it lacks the sheer power of the E-Pace. The XC40 only makes sense if you are so tight on the budget, otherwise the E-Pace is a good choice considering you get 5-year complimentary scheduled maintenance at no extra cost.

Jaguar E-Pace vs BMW X1

The BMW X1 has beaten the E-Pace on every front be it acceleration times, gas mileage, braking distance, cargo space, pricing etc. Between the two of them, unless you want to sport a Jaguar badge, we would suggest you to go for the X1 any day.

2020 Jaguar E-PACE Final Verdict

7.9/10

The Jaguar E-Pace is a good car considering its handling characteristics but the pricing doesn't make sense for the average buyer. Of course, it won’t! It is not an average car or an average brand, right? Its competitors offer many more features at a reasonable price. For your information, a fully loaded BMW X1 costs approximately 1500USD less than the E-Pace P250 SE variant. Moreover, if you can shell out an extra 5000USD, you can get the mid-size Jaguar F-Pace SUV. Whatever it may be, a Jag is still a Jag and it is certainly more fun to drive. So if you want just the E-Pace, just go grab one!
