Sometimes it is okay not to be different because when you try being different in the same ilk things might turn out for you as they do for the 2020 Infiniti Q60. It is a car that can’t decide between being a staunch city cruiser and a hardcore highway hauler. What it does know what it wants to be acknowledged.

Likewise, it features all the necessary bells and whistles worthy of grabbing attention. It gets a twin-turbocharged V6, putting out 300 hp and 295 lb.-ft torque, under the hood and top-quality, soft-touch materials on the inside. What it does not get though is the aid to make use of those abilities.

The gearbox is fussy in traffic and the seats won’t allow you to take a tour of the countryside. So for a starting price of over $41,000, the 2020 Infiniti Q60 manages to look like a luxury coupe with the right package but fails to deliver the same level of sophistication as the likes of Acura TLX and ES 350.

2020 Infiniti Q60 Features

7.0/10

The Infiniti Q60 coupe for the year 2020 is available in two different variants. There’s the 3.0t Pure and the other 3.0t Luxe. For a base variant, the 3.0t Pure is adequately loaded with features. While the other, Luxe, variant carries over the same features and builds on them with additional Luxe features. Prices for the base variant begins at $41,350. As for the Luxe, it costs $45,500.

Common on both variants is a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine, and while the rear-wheel drive is standard, and the all-wheel-drive unit is available as an option across the range. Also common on both variants is a seven-speed automatic unit which helps the engine with power manipulation.

Other noticeable features include two, a 7-inch and 8-inch, touchscreens standard on both trims, and a 6-speaker sound setup for the 3.0t Pure, which is replaced by a more premium 13-speaker setup from Bose on the Luxe. Furthermore, the integration of Apple CaPlay and Android Auto as a must-have on the Q60 lineup for the year 2020 improves ease of access.

While the base 3.0t Pure offers fair value for what it costs, the Luxe variant is definitely the one to go for. It adds more premium features like a Bose sound system and moonroof. For a little over $4,000 in addition to the base Pure’s price, the Luxe variant almost makes up for what this Infiniti misses out in general.

2020 Infiniti Q60 Engine and Performance

8.0/10

The Infiniti Q60 is a snazzy coupe that derives power from a jaunty twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 pushing out 300 hp and 295 lb.-ft. torque. That power from the engine travels to the rear wheels of this coupe as standard, unless you opt for the all-wheel-drive unit, an option available across the range.

2020 Infiniti Q60 Coupe Has a 3.0-liter V6 premium Engine

The transition of power from the engine to the wheels is brought about by a seven-speed automatic. Together, the engine and transmission make for some remarkable, if not exceptional, performance for this Infiniti.

The 2.0-liter inline-four motor of the Volvo S60 is twin-charged. Hence, it is the most powerful despite being the smallest in this lineup.

How fast is the Infiniti Q60?

The 3.0-liter V6 of the Q60 pushes out peak torque really low on the powerband, so this Infiniti feels eager at most times. It’s only let down is its seven-speed automatic, which feels a touch too hesitant to shift at lower speeds. But push this coupe past its infirmity, and the transmission completely transforms to respond with so much zeal, you will not want to take your foot off the pedal.

The twin-charged 2.0-liter engine of the S60 is potent enough to hurl it past 60 mph quicker than all other coupes in this lineup, but it suffers in the long run due to its weight. That is when the Q60 comes into its own and overtakes everyone else to be the first to finish a quarter-mile.

What about the braking performance of the Infiniti Q60?

Braking on the Infiniti Q60 is precise if not brilliant. The response from the brakes is very much proportional to input on the pedal, but you’ve gotta be cautious. This Infiniti tends to steer sideways while going down hard on the brakes during emergency stops.

2020 Infiniti Q60 Coupe Front Brake is 12.6 in.

The Q60’s Active Trace Control feature ensures that the brakes bite on the inside of the wheel for better control, but that results in a lot of heat and smell from the rotors. Probably a reminder to take a break from braking so hard.

The Volvo S60 is about 300 pounds heavier than all the other coupes. Consequently, it also gets the biggest brakes in this segment. It is still not the quickest to stop though. The lightweight Lexus ES350 manages to reach a halt before all other coupes.

What about its driving dynamics?

The Infiniti Q60 is not a city car, courtesy its uncoordinated gearbox. While driving around in city traffic, the seven-speed automatic constantly struggles to find the right gear to be in, and makes a lot of noise doing so, as if it were asking to be set free. Also its relatively longer wheelbase and heft mean filtering through traffic isn’t all that easy.

2020 Infiniti Q60 Coupe Front View

So on the highway, at higher speeds, is where the Infiniti Q60m really comes into its own. With heaps of low-end torque, an abundance of power throughout the range and much sorted shifts from the seven-speed, the Q60 transforms into a brute out in the open. Its larger footprint keeps the Q60 composed and overtaking passes are extremely engaging.

2020 Infiniti Q60 Fuel Economy

7.0/10

The twin-turbocharged V6 of the Infiniti Q60 behaves just like any other six-cylinder. Its punchy, its powerful and at the same time it’s a total gas guzzler, and the clumsy gearbox literally adds more fuel to the fire.

The Infiniti Q60’s V6 might not be efficient, but this coupe offers best in class range as it gets a massive fuel tank, bigger than all the other coupes in this segment.

2020 Infiniti Q60 Interior

7.0/10

The Infiniti Q60 with its twin-turbo V6 is a bit performance oriented, so it’s not so much for passenger comfort. While the seats all around are comfortable, space in the second row is cramped. So it’s really only the front row seats, more precisely the driver’s seat, where one would want to spend most of their time on the inside of this Infiniti.

As the Infiniti Q60 is a luxury car nonetheless, and it does offer that. Plenty of soft-touch materials and top quality fabrics spread across the cabin. There are several options to customize the look and feel of the interior too. Even visibility from the driver’s seat is decent despite this coupe’s longer nose.

2020 Infiniti Q60 Coupe Seats

However, overall this Infiniti seems out of bounds at all times. On one hand, the seven-speed automatic is always fussing about how it wants you to cross interstates so you can fully appreciate what the twin-turbo V6 has to offer. On the other hand, cabin space and seats make this Infiniti comfortable enough only over shorter commutes.

Does it come loaded with tech inside?

The 2020 Infiniti Q60 gets an 8-inch upper and a 7-inch lower touchscreen information displays as part of Infiniti’s INTOUCH display system. They feature the following tech:

  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto
  • Navigation
  • WiFi-Hotspot
  • Bluetooth
  • SiriusXM Traffic
  • SiriusXM Travel Link
  • SiriusXM radio

What about utility?

The only sense of practicality and usability this Infiniti seems to offer is its large fuel tank. Other than that, it has a cooped up cabin and an even smaller trunk, and this despite the fact that the Q60 has relatively longer wheelbase.

Creature comforts on offer in the Infiniti Q60

Nevertheless, to make up for the many shortcomings of the Q60’s cabin, Infiniti has equipped this coupe with a handful of friendly features, which are:

  • Push-button ignition
  • Dual-zone automatic temperature control
  • Power windows with one-touch auto up/down
  • Power sliding moonroof
  • Dual front and rear cup holders
  • Front/rear carpeted floor mats
  • 8-way power front seats

8.0/10

The Infiniti Q60 is not very efficient and is also not very practical but there’s no denying that it manages to look like a proper V6 powered luxury coupe. Upfront, large quadrangle Infiniti grille kinks at the sides to make room for the sleek, swept-back LED headlights and a blacked-out bumper with body-colored lip spoiler add menace to machismo.

The hood slopes gently upwards with bulges on the side that besides adding to the Q60’s muscularity serve the purpose of keeping the driver informed of where its wheels are. Atop those chunky 19-inch aluminum wheels, gracefully sculpted fenders bend outwards to enhance aggression.

2020 Infiniti Q60 Coupe Third Quarter view

Those tasteful sculpts carry all the way over to the sides along a rising shoulder line to meet the kinked roof just beyond the unconventionally designed C pillars which give this Infiniti its coupe-like stance. Complete with a decklid spoiler and dual chrome-finish exhaust, the aerodynamic rear looks totally in line with the comprehensive front.

The exterior features that make the Infiniti Q60 command attention among other coupes are:

  • LED headlamps with DRLs
  • LED fog lights
  • Infiniti grille with Infiniti badge

2020 Infiniti Q60 Safety

9.0/10

The 2020 Infiniti Q60 is yet to be tested by authorities for how well it can handle crashes, but its price and niche indicate it will feature the necessary safety equipment. They include:

  • Infiniti advanced airbag system
  • LATCH
  • Brake assist
  • ABS
  • EBD
  • Traction control
  • Tire pressure monitor

2020 Infiniti Q60 Competition

Infiniti Q60 vs. Acura TLX

As a luxury, V6 powered coupe, the Acura TLX is clearly the better of the two. It might be behind the Infiniti Q60 in performance, but that slight difference is more than made up for by what the TLX has to offer. It is more accommodating overall and it also has a significantly larger boot. The V6 on the TLX is also a lot more efficient than the one on the Q60. To top it all off, the Acura also costs less.

2020 Acura TLX

Infiniti Q60 vs. Lexus ES 350

Not only is the Lexus ES 350 less expensive of the two, it offers the kind of practicality and usability the Q60 cannot even come close to. The ES 350 has a much more spacious second row and a trunk almost twice the size of the Q60’s.

2020 Lexus ES 350

2020 Infiniti Q60 Final Verdict

7.8/10

For a car that looks like it has so much to offer, the Infiniti Q60 actually does not. Except for its potent V6 and well-finished interior it doesn’t feel much like a luxury car. The gearbox is too disturbing in the city, the seats too uncomfortable over long hours and the boot is just too small for practically anywhere. Almost any other car out-values this coupe from Infiniti.
