When Nissan wanted to compete in the luxury sedan segment they came up with the Infiniti. It was introduced in the United States back in 1989. The automaker knew with its mainstream image it’s going to be quite hard to compete in the premium vehicle segment. Following the lead of the rivals such as Toyota and Honda, they too launched a marque targeting the luxury sedan base.

Overall Rating

The performance of the brand was not great at the start, the sales were low and the models were barely recognizable but since then it has made an improvement on all fronts. Making the cars more up to date and adding all the latest features resulted with increased sales figures and appreciation.

Coming to Q50, this was the very first vehicle to follow Infiniti’s new naming scheme where all the coupe and sedan carried the “Q” prefix”, the rest of the SUV and Crossovers fell under the “QX” badge. Launched in 2013, Q50 succeeded the G sedan or now known as Q40 and it has been in production since then. The 2020 model brought some much welcomed changes and we are here to discuss just about those.

The new Infiniti Q50 comes in 5 trims that are 3.0t Pure, 3.0t Luxe, Edition 30, 3.0t Sport, 3.0t Red Sport. All the trims feature 3.0L V6 that produces 300 hp apart from the Red Sport that has 400 hp. The rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive is available on all the variants to choose from. The 7-speed automatic is standard in all.

Our Recommendation

We recommend the 3.0t Luxe trim as the Pure variant doesn’t offer much in terms of functionality. Edition 30 and above don’t justify the price tag. The Luxe is the middle ground between the base and top-end models. Plus you can use that money saved on packages offered by the Infiniti to get what you want and nothing more. The packages are Essential and Pre-Assist which brings a lot of functionality to the Luxe like safety features.

2020 Infiniti Q50 Engine and Performance

8.0/10

The Infiniti Q50 is a powerful car and there is no doubt about it as the powertrain produces 300hp, which is a lot of power for a compact luxury sedan. Under the hood is a 3.0L twin-turbocharged V6 coupled with a 7-speed automatic. Both of these are enough to make it a fast car that is luxurious at the same time.

When compared with the competition the crown goes to the Infiniti Q50 without any questions. It has a bigger engine than the competition which produces more horsepower and torque than all others. The closest to it is Volvo S60 with 250 hp (50 less than the Q50) and 258 lb-ft torque. The Lexus is closely matched with the Volvo but Audi is far behind when it comes to the power in terms of bhp.

How fast is it?

The Q50 is a luxury sedan per se so expecting speed out of it would not be ideal but considering the competition, the sedan has become fast over time and the trend doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon. So, now how fast the car is. Well going by the figures it can reach 0-60 mph in just 7.0 sec and remember we are talking about the base model here not the Red Sport with 400 hp. That is the real deal and that’s where the true fun begins. For the mere reference, the Red Sport trim reaches 60 mph from naught in just 4.5 sec. That’s sports car category and we are talking about a luxury sedan so yeah that’s fast.

Coming to the competition the Volvo seems to be the clear champion but bear in mind that this is not the base model as the Q50. But still Volvo is a fast car nonetheless. Audi is no slouch when compared to the rivals and puts up a great fight.

What about the Stopping power?

Brakes are one of the most important parts of a car and their importance is unmatchable. The car can be fast but it has to stop at one point. The Infiniti Q50 comes equipped with 18-inch tires which can be increased to 19-inch in the sport version and above.

The weight is on the higher side and the performance is also good so to control that these need some serious capabilities. Each of these vehicles is closely matched and offers great braking capabilities. But Lexus seems to be taking the trophy home at least for the time being since the data for others is not available.

How well does it Handle?

The Infiniti Q50 has a lot of flaws when it comes to riding and handling. It is a heavy car and that plays a major role when cornering. There are driving assist functions like stability control and advanced steering systems to help you out in critical situations but ditch them and it's hard to judge what’s going on. The only plus side is that the car is immune to steering deviations on bumps. But remember the trade is not acceptable.

When compared to the competition it becomes apparent that the car lacks in terms of driving experience. There are characteristics missing that you can find in the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C Class and you regret their absence. The Audi A4 also lacks that but it doesn’t seem to be hurt from that and offers a great experience.

2020 Infiniti Q50 Sedan Rear View

2020 Infiniti Q50 Fuel Economy

7.0/10

The Q50 lacks in terms of mileage on both city and highway thanks to its bigger engine. Considering that

The sedan packs a V6 the mileage is not bad in any terms. But considering the segment in which it competes, you expect the car to perform well on the fuel-economy scale.

Coming to the competition Audi and Volvo have it tied up with combined mileage which means they take the crown in the competition and are the clear winners. The Lexus is no better than the Infiniti with a combined MPG of 24. That may not seem big but it adds up over time. The Infiniti comes back in the game as it has the largest fuel tank in the competition with 20 gallons that means it has a bigger range in miles.

2020 Infiniti Q50 Interior

7.0/10

Being a luxury sedan the interior is where the automaker can’t compromise. It has to be premium and loaded with tech to make it stand out in the competition. The Infiniti offers a handsome amount of space for the occupants both rear and front. The seating is also very comfortable and will feel the premium touch across all the interior. From the red stitching to the intelligent use of leather.

There are also color combinations available for the interior to match your likings. The little thing matters a lot and Infiniti took care of all that. From the physical knobs to the double touch screens. The car leaves no room for complaints. The Q50 premium look is increased by the instruments that it features-

  • Clock
  • External Temperature Display
  • Trip Computer
  • Tachometer

Then there is sunroof because of which interior looks open and spacious. Everything is placed where it should be. You will have no problem getting used to it and its nooks and crannies. It gives you a feeling of comfort and calm.

Comfort and Convenience

Being a luxury sedan the comfort is the forefront of the car where it needs to score the highest. There are a lot of features to make your ride in Q50 comfortable like the heated steering wheel, heated mirrors, and power-adjustable seats. The convenience part is also taken care of as the car comes with-

  • Audio And Cruise Controls On Steering Wheel
  • Overhead Console With Storage
  • Front Seatback Storage
  • Cruise Control
  • Leather And Alloy Steering Wheel
  • Keyless Ignition
  • Climate Control
  • Turn Signal In Mirrors
  • Dual Illuminating Vanity Mirrors
  • Front And Rear Cupholders
  • Electrochromatic Inside Rearview Mirror
  • Electric Power Steering
  • Rear View Camera
  • Tilt And Telescopic Steering Wheel
  • Front Door Pockets
  • Interior Air Filtration

All these features are standard in the base model and you get more with options or moving the ladder and buying the other trims based on your requirements. There are a lot of options to choose from and you will find almost everything that is possible in a compact entry-level sedan. The seat adjustment options are also there-

  • Bucket Front Seats
  • Height Adjustable Passenger Seat
  • 8 -Way Power Passenger Seat
  • Height Adjustable Driver Seat

Infotainment System

Given that the car has been in the market for seven years without any changes it offers quite a lot in terms of infotainment but not as much as BMW 3 Series or Mercedes C Class. The car comes with dual-screen and supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There are 6 speakers in total in the Pure, and Luxe trim but you can increase that number up to 16 by going for the Sport and above. In Sport, and Red Sport the speaker offered are from Bose and offer a surround sound system. So, for all the music lovers the clear choice is the Sport and above.

There is a speed-sensitive volume control too. Through those two screens, you can control all your navigation, music, and functions. Considering the price and competition it offers one of the best infotainment systems out there and you will be quite pleased with all the functionality it offers.

What about Cargo Space?

Since the car is marketed as a sedan the cargo space should be enough for the day to day usage. Looking at the space available in the Infiniti we can be sure that you’ll never face any problem carrying your luggage. There is a slight problem with this is that you can not fold the rear seats to make up space for large objects in the base Pure model other than that the cargo itself is enough.

Looking at the competition Infiniti offers the largest boot and right after that is Audi A4. Lexus is the clear loser in the game of who got the biggest trunk. All this is thanks to the Q50 length which is longer than the competition and that directly means more space both inside and out.

2020 Infiniti Q50 Exterior

8.0/10

The Q50 is a good looking car and it has been that way for a long time. By looking at the car you can’t tell that this has been in the market for more than 6 years. It was launched in 2014 and since then the sedan has not gone through any generation changes. There are not many complaints about how the car looks.

When you look at the car from the front the car looks bold and graceful at the same time because of that front chrome grill. The Infiniti emblem is sitting right in the center of the grill. Now, coming to the side of the vehicle the 18-inch wheel with aluminum alloy increases its command on the road and you can get the 19-inch in the Sport and the Red Sport version. It misses out on the chrome door handle but makes it up with the chrome window moldings. The body lines are prominent and make it look appealing. The rear window is slant because of the coupe look at the rear which may affect the rear visibility. The chrome just below the automaker emblem gracefully merges into taillights.

2020 Infiniti Q50 Safety

8.0/10

Being a marque of Nissan there are no compromises when it comes to safety. Coming from the land of Toyota, Honda there is no doubt about the reliability and longevity. Being an entry-level luxury sedan there will not be many features but there will be all the required ones.

Other safety features that are present in the 2020 Infiniti Q50 are-

  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Blind Spot Warning
  • Front Seat Pre-Crash Seat Belts
  • Collision Notification via INFINITI InTouch™ Services
  • Forward Emergency Braking
  • Backup Collision Intervention
  • Lane Departure Prevention
  • Blind Spot Intervention
  • Predictive Forward Collision Warning
  • Around View Monitor with Moving Object Detection

2020 Infiniti Q50 Competition

9.2/10

Infiniti Q50 vs Lexus IS 300

Hailing from the same land the Lexus IS is true competition the Infiniti faces. Both are the marque of the two of the biggest manufacturers that come from Japan. Lexus from Toyota and Infiniti from Nissan. Both of these are very similar in a lot of ways and each has its ups and downs. Q50 has a bigger engine and more power whereas the Lexus has better mileage.

Infiniti Q50 vs Volvo S60

The Swedish manufacturer is known for making vehicles that are the definition of luxury and S60 is no different in that aspect. The car offers a good blend of power and comfort never letting you down in any of the aspects. The S60 comes with a 2.0L 4 cylinder engine that produces a good 250 hp and that in an entry-level luxury sedan is enough.

Infiniti Q50 vs Audi A4

The Germans have been ruling the luxury vehicle segment and Audi played a big part in that. It has always been hailed as one the best option whenever it came to offering comfort. The automaker has never disappointed its owners and always has true in its commitment to offering the best they can make. The A4 is no different. It is one of the best cars out there in this price segment. The car may lack power when compared to the rivals but what the driving experience it offers makes up for that shortage of power.

2020 Infiniti Q50 Final Verdict

7.1/10

The Infiniti Q50 is best defined as- a car trying to remain relevant to the new age by wearing the cape of modernization but at the heart is not. It has been in the market for 7 years. It looks good but you will get fed up with every good thing once you see it enough times. The car needs generation change and it needs it now if it wants to compete with the likes of Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Mercedes C Class, and Volvo S60. We hope Infiniti will come up with a new generation next year. Till then we recommend that you look at its rivals when deciding to buy.

This q50 has been there since 2014 waiting for a redesign. I went for it because of its old school character which now feels more like outdated than no frills. Not the design but th execution of stuff on the inside is old and I mean it. Features like the driver display and manual hood opening are not old school but more like a remorse nowadays where every car make is counting them as standard

I see a lot of people people praising the performance of this q50 and not talking about the comfort and convenience. Now if I didn't know any better, I'd say Q50 was all about the sporty driving, but it isn't. Driving it for 5k miles now has cleared that out. It does feature a sports driving dynamics in bold but doesn't completely keep the comfort and convenience because of the minute detailing and execution

The ride and handling of my new 2020 q50 is the best. Throttle response is quite linear as if it doesn't have a turbo charger fitted. Drive selector further adds up the fun and maps the responses according to the mode. And when in Sports mode, handling is just perfect. Not that its bad in other modes though.

"Thank you Infiniti"

Love the optional sports exhaust note. The grunt is real and so are the performance capabilities of this car. The best part, all wheel drive sedan that can tread anywhere at anytime.
