The 2021 Hyundai Veloster gets a couple of upgrades for the new model year. The most prominent upgrade is the introduction of a new 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Hyundai claims that the new transmission option will execute quicker shifts. Apart from that, the formerly optional Performance Package is now included in the standard features list. This implies that all the models of the 2021 Veloster N now crank out 275 hp and also get all the upgrades of this kit. Other revamps bless the 2021 Veloster N's interior and get you lighter and more aggressively bolstered sport seats, a refreshed touchscreen infotainment, a heated steering wheel, and heated front seats.

The prices of the 2021 Hyundai Veloster N starts from $32,250. This is excluding the $995 destination fee that the Veloster N invites. For the record, the 2021 Veloster N is almost $5000 more expensive than the 2020 Hyundai Veloster N, accrediting all the upgrades introduced for the new model year. For leasing, consider the 2021 Hyundai Veloster N to cost you around $429 per month for 36 months, with $2599 due at signing.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Overall Rating

The Hyundai Veloster N is the ultimate hot-hatch rocking a Hyundai badge on a wide cascading grille. The zippy little hatchback is a hoot to drive, be it in the city or out on the highway. As standard, the 2.0L turbocharged engine produces 275 horsepower with the option of a six-speed manual and seven-speed DCT gearbox. This much grunt is enough to propel the Veloster N from 0-60 mph in 5.5 seconds. Sports differential up front keeps the steering input unaffected by power and around the corners, the Veloster N generates an absurd amount of grip which is impressive given its affordable price tag and front-wheel-drive nature. The N’s cheeky appearance is a cherry on top of an appealing overall package.

Rule of thumb: if you can choose it on Forza, it's probably got something to write home about. With Hyundai's Veloster N, you'll run out of paper pretty quickly. The Veloster N is an affordable challenger to the likes of the Volkswagen Golf GTi and the Honda Civic Type-R, and it glares in the face of the former.

2021 Hyundai Veloster N Hatchback Pricing and Features

For the 2021 model year, Hyundai’s effectively shifted the Veloster N upwards in the performance hatch market. The Performance Pack—a 25 horsepower bump, bigger brakes, an electronic limited-slip differential, and 19” wheels clad in Pirelli P-Zeros—now comes standard, and the “base” Veloster N is no more. The Veloster N for 2021 gets two gearbox options, one being an eight-speed, dual-clutch automatic (a $1500 option) and the six-speed manual.

On the interior part, the car gets lightweight sport seats which Hyundai calls N light-sport bucket seats. Naturally, Hyundai requires buyers to dip a bit deeper into their wallets for this bevy of goodies: The 2021 Veloster N carries an MSRP of $32,250, $2,550 more than its 2020 predecessor equipped with the then-optional $2,100 Performance Pack.

2021 Hyundai Veloster N Hatchback Buying Advice

As the Hyundai Veloster N is offered as a standalone trim, with no other options or packages, or features, there is not much of a choice to make here. As it's all about whether you want a Veloster N or not.  Although you can still make a choice between the standard 6-speed manual transmission or the newly available 8-speed wet dual-clutch transmission.

2021 Hyundai Veloster N Hatchback Engine and Performance

"The N Custom mode allows you to custom-tailor settings for the engine's throttle response, the standard adaptive dampers, the limited-slip diff, the selectable engine rev matching, the stability control, the steering weight, and the exhaust." - Car and Driver

The 2021 Hyundai Veloster N has a 2.0L, turbocharged four-cylinder engine. It produces 275 horsepower and 260-pound feet of torque. The Veloster N gets a 6-speed manual transmission with rev-matching. An 8-speed wet dual-clutch transmission is optional. In a world of automatic gearboxes, it’s especially refreshing to manually drive a sports car. Shift knob or paddle shifters, it’s your choice.

There are five different driving modes that you can toggle from the dashboard screen or steering wheel-mounted buttons. There’s Eco, Normal, Sport, N Mode, and N Custom. You can tweak nearly every aspect of your turbo sports car’s performance – the chassis, steering, and throttle response. The N Custom mode allows you to custom-tailor settings for the engine's throttle response, the standard adaptive dampers, the limited-slip diff, the selectable engine rev-matching, the stability control, the steering weight, and the exhaust.

The competition is tough for these hot hatchbacks, every brand packs up a lucrative deal with different power, torque, and gearbox combinations. Civic Type-R established its territory with its better horsepower and torque figures than the others.

The Veloster N's turbocharged 2.0L Inline-four also makes 260 pound-feet of torque, with peak twist arriving between 1,450 and 4,700 rpm. With the DCT Hyundai says the Veloster N will zip to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds, a couple of tenths quicker than with the manual, and it feels even quicker than that.

There's noticeable turbo lag at low speeds in some situations, but that just means you get to hear the turbo spool up and make fun whooshing noises. Getting back to numbers, the Veloster N can lap the quarter-mile distance in 14.2 seconds, and flat out, can attain a top speed of 147 mph.

All the hatchback features a six-speed manual or an automatic gearbox except Civic Type-R which only gets a manual. But even with the far superior automatics, the Civic Type-R’s performance remains unchallenged with the fastest in-class 0-60 and quarter-mile time. The Veloster N slots in the second spot while the Golf GTi is the slowest in the segment.

2021 Hyundai Veloster N Hatchback Fuel Economy

The all-new 2021 Hyundai Veloster N provides a fuel economy of 22 mpg in cities and 28 mpg on highways. Summing it up, the 2021 Hyundai Veloster N is good for a combined 25 mpg. However these are the figures for the manual transmission, as the fuel-efficiency takes a dip for the DCT variant returning 20 mpg in the city, 27 mpg on the highways, and 22 mpg combined.

Although, the 2021 Veloster N comes up with a total fuel capacity of 13.2 gallons, which lends it a highway range of 370 miles which is decent enough to be considered a respectable tourer.

Small and efficient, most of these hatchbacks aren’t gas guzzlers and save you the frequent trips to the gas station. The Hyundai Veloster N is a fuel-efficient hatchback in the segment just below the segment leader VW Golf GTi that returns 26 mpg combined. Civic Type-R's mpg figures match that of the Veloster despite offering higher performance. But on the flip side, Civic Type-R has the smallest fuel tank in this comparison which translates into a smaller range from a tankful.

2021 Hyundai Veloster N Hatchback Interior

"The Veloster's interior is intelligently designed and packaged, and it makes good use of available space afforded by the car's funky, asymmetrical styling." - Edmunds

The quirky, three-door layout opens to reveal that the compact dimensions of the Veloster translate into an interior that is plasticky, dark, and drab. Except for the snug rear seats, however, it is comfortable and its controls are all laid out easily within reach. Leather is only featured on the steering wheel and the shift knob, and the instrument cluster features LED shift lights.

The biggest change in the 2021 Hyundai Veloster N's interior is a new pair of front seats. They're thinner and 4.4 pounds lighter than the old seats, and they both look and feel better, too. New lightweight sport seats are standard and offer heating and a light-up logo in the backrest. Interior design showcases Hyundai’s characteristically straightforward layout but the overall impression isn’t as refined as that of the GTI and the Civic Type R.

The Korean’s fit and finishes also suffer when compared to its German and Japanese rivals. Even so, the Veloster’s technological accouterments are satisfactory; the dash is fitted with a fashionable 8.0” infotainment screen tacked high on the dash, with secondary analog controls thoughtfully arranged below it.

Cargo Volume (ft.3)

The Veloster N neither has a large set of front nor rear seats and lacks far behind its competitors especially the Civic Type-R's interior in terms of space. Coming to the rear, the Passengers won't be the happiest if three are seated in the rear seats as it feels cramped, it’s best suited for two. The overall Cabin space feels less as compared to what the competition offers which is a deal-breaker here.

The smaller the vehicle, the less space it will inherently have. Here also the story isn’t different either, as the 2021 Hyundai Veloster N's cargo space is a bit on the tighter side at 19.9 cubic feet on offer with rear seats up. That said, folding the rear seats from the trunk is easy to do since the latch on the seatback is within arm's length.

The 2021 Hyundai Veloster gets an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system that is mounted in a floating manner, which makes it easy to operate. A Bluetooth hands-free phone system having voice recognition function and Hyundai’s special Blue Link Connected Care package will provide you with comfortable navigation, easy calling, service scheduling, enhanced roadside assistance, service reminders, and more

The Veloster’s infotainment system receives a digital reskin for the 2021 model year. Each function is enhanced, whether it’s navigation or the radio and media functions. Save for the custom drive mode tuning, however, the system may be more approachable (for iPhone users) with the standard Apple CarPlay. The eight-speaker Infinity sound system is above average for the segment.

Some of the most eminent interior and infotainment features of the 2021 Hyundai Veloster N are:

  • 8” touchscreen navigation AM/FM/MP3 audio system with 8 speakers
  • Infinity® Premium Audio system with Clari-Fi™ Music Restoration Technology
  • Bluetooth® hands-free phone system with voice recognition
  • Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay®
  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio with HD Radio™

2021 Hyundai Veloster N Hatchback Exterior

"Low on price but high on personality, the 2021 Veloster takes inspiration from the original and polishes the only four-door, asymmetrical hatchback that we’ve ever known." - TheCarConnection

2021 Hyundai Veloster N gets its look from its previous version that makes the car carry forward the legacy. The car wears a great sporty look with a quirky three-door arrangement that makes it stand out from the crowd. The 2021 Hyundai Veloster N has distinctive hatchback styling without mimicking anything else that’s on the road. It has four doors if you count the hatch. There’s a quirky rear passenger door, but only on the right side of the vehicle. That’s a bit odd, but not a deal-breaker.

The 2021 Hyundai Veloster N's dimensions are the reason why it looks so appealing and delightful. An aggressive front end along with an unconventional rear-end design, which is not the best for rear visibility. Moreover, the hatchback gets a ton of handy exterior features that include the LED head and tail lamps, automatic folding mirrors, broadly cared grills with ‘N’ mounted over, vents on both the sides of the front bumper and rear spoiler mounted at the back for air-cutting.

From front to back, this turbo hatchback is 167.9” long. The Veloster N has a front mesh grille similar to the Toyota Corolla. It’s got 19” alloy wheels and Pirelli P-Zero performance tires. The rear of the Veloster N has a gloss black rear spoiler over the hatch and large dual-bore exhaust tips. You can customize the exhaust note, too.

One of the only drawbacks to the 2021 Veloster N is that there are only 4 paint combinations. There’s a gratuitous red palette, an ultra-black with red trim, a chalky white with red trim, and performance blue.

In terms of garage storage, a one-car garage will suit the Veloster N well. The Hyundai Veloster N is the smallest hatchback in this comparison. This gives the car nimbleness which makes zipping through city traffic a breeze but compromises upon the leg space for the passengers.

In this comparison, Civic Type-R offers the biggest dimensions which translate into more space inside. On the flip side, Veloster gets an edge over others with a better ground clearance of 5.3 inches making it easier to drive through those big bad bumps or potholes.

Some of the most noteworthy exterior features of the 2021 Hyundai Veloster N are:

  • Wheels: 19 x 8.0J Alloy
  • Tires: 19” Pirelli P Zero™ summer performance tires
  • LED Daytime Running Lights
  • Automatic on/off headlights
  • LED low-beam headlights and LED taillights
  • N-specific body styling and rear underbody air diffuser
  • Large-bore dual exhaust outlets
  • Dual power heated side mirrors with turn signal indicators
  • Large 2-stage rear spoiler with integrated center brake light

2021 Hyundai Veloster N Hatchback Safety

The 2021 Hyundai Veloster N has not yet been crash-tested by the NHTSA or IIHS. However, IIHS gave the 2020 Hyundai Veloster N superior crash ratings for frontal impacts and got the nod for Top Safety Pick overall. As the 2021 Veloster N is a carryover structurally, expect the same vigor in terms of safety and reliability to be carried over.

The 2021 Veloster N carried over unchanged with most of the safety features for 2021 but this time around adds more standard features which were earlier optional. The new standard driver assistance features include Forward Collision-avoidance Assist, Lane Following Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Driver Attention Warning, Blind Spot Collision-Avoidance Warning, and Rear Cross-traffic Collision Warning.

Some of the prominent safety features of the 2021 Hyundai Veloster N include:

  • 6 standard airbags including Curtain 1st and 2nd-row overhead airbag
  • ESC with Traction Control and Vehicle Stability Management System
  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection
  • Dual Front, Side Impact, and Side Curtain Airbags

2021 Hyundai Veloster N Hatchback Competition

2021 Hyundai Veloster N Vs 2021 Honda Civic Type R

The Hyundai Veloster N is a performance hatchback that is yet another track-focused machine for the performance hatchback segment. The Veloster N is the most affordable performance vehicle in the lineup too, coming in at an MSRP of $32,250 undercutting the Civic Type-R by almost $6,500.

 2021 Honda Civic Type R

But it is not as capable as the Honda Civic Type R as it lacks in terms of features and equipment. It is also not as entertaining to drive as the Type-R too. However, for the price, the 2021 Veloster N is an impressive moniker if you want a decently powerful and capable hatchback.

2021 Hyundai Veloster N Vs 2021 Volkswagen Golf GTi

Starting with the engine, Hyundai seems to walk ahead besting Volkswagen Golf GTi in this segment. The power and torque produced by Hyundai are better than that of Volkswagen. Considering the acceleration and the braking part, Veloster beats Golf yet again. With that said, the GTi should be cheaper to run as it returns more mpg than the Veloster N.

 2021 Volkswagen Golf GTi

The build quality is German, to say the least. On the inside, it is practical, more spacious, and utterly comfortable when compared to the Veloster N. All in all VW seems a better choice over the Veloster N but the price to performance ratio tilts the scale in favor of Veloster N.

2021 Hyundai Veloster N Hatchback Final Verdict

The 2021 Hyundai Veloster N is an affordable turbo sports car with an MSRP of just $32,250. This fast little car is quite versatile. If you’re a novice speed freak, then you might rely more heavily on the LED shift reminder located in the instrument cluster. If you’re a racing pro, then you might spend countless hours tweaking your performance settings on the 8-inch touchscreen.

The Veloster N has impressive safety gear and crash test ratings. It doesn’t have the interior space of other vehicles in its category, but still comfortably seats four passengers. It also has a 3-year maintenance package. So, if you’ve been thinking about the VW Golf GTi or the Honda Civic Type-R, then a test drive in the Veloster N might change your mind.
