Overall Rating

Born in Namyang, South Korea and honed at the Legendary Nurburgring Circuit in Germany, under the Aegis of former BMW M-Division Head Albert Biermann, the 2020 Hyundai Veloster N, is unlike any Hyundai that you'd have ever driven before. The Veloster N shares a lot from Hyundai’s World Rally Championship Contender, the i20 and you will find it translating on the road while driving it. The FWD only hot hatch from Hyundai features a 275hp Motor paired to a 6 Speed Manual Transmission with Rev-matching. You get a lot of fancy tech on-board the Veloster N and that includes Pirelli P-Zero Summer Tires, Big 13.6” Front and 12.4” Rear Ventilated Brake Rotors, Torque Vectoring, Variable Exhaust Valve System, N Corner Carving Differential and a lot more.

While rivals like Subaru, Honda, Audi, and the likes, charge a hefty premium for offering a Package like the Veloster, Hyundai has managed to undercut most of them. The Veloster N, with the Standard Package will set you back by nearly $28,000 and by paying just $2,100 extra over the same, you can have the Veloster N with the Performance Package.

2020 Hyundai Veloster N Hatchback Features

8.0/10

While there aren’t many options to choose from in the 2020 Veloster N, Hyundai is offering a lot of features to keep consumers away from complaining about the lack of it. The base 250hp standard Veloster comes with goodies like a Big Touchscreen Infotainment System, Fancy Gearbox and a lot more. However, people who crave more power can opt for the Performance package that bumps up power by 25 horses and adds some track-focused equipment to the Veloster N.

Which trim to go for?

The Performance Package on the Veloster N, not only adds a powerful motor to the vehicle but also adds some drool-worthy performance enhancements as well. Hence, if we were to select one of the 2 options, we would put our money on the performance spec model.

2020 Hyundai Veloster N Hatchback Engine and Performance

6.0/10

The Veloster N provides heart-pounding performance with its 2.0-liter direct injection turbocharged engine and puts out 275 hp @ 6000 rpm and 260 lb-ft of torque @ 4,700 rpm. Power is routed to the front wheel through an electronic limited-slip differential. The torque vectoring system precisely distributes the power for optimum agility and enhanced handling. The turbo system intercooler is isolated from the condenser and radiator for even more efficient cooling of the intake charge.

2020 Hyundai Veloster N Hatchback has 6-speed manual Transmission

The engine is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission with rev-matching. It makes most of the engine power and the close-ratio gearshifts are smooth as butter. The Veloster N clutch also utilizes a double-layer facing clutch disc design for increased burst strength and torque capability. The shifts are precise and turbo lag is pretty much nonexistent. The advanced exhaust system works in conjunction with a sound generator to enhance the driving experience for the driver.

*2019 Model Year figures used for comparison purposes only

Clearly, the Honda and the Subaru have a lot more to offer in terms of the Power onboard. However, they are far more expensive than the Hyundai as well and in that manner, the Hyundai makes a lot of sense. The VW, on the other hand, loses out to all of the others here by a big margin.

How fast is the Veloster N?

Inspired from the World Rally Championship and Touring car racing series, the Veloster N comes with ferocious acceleration. This Hyundai comes with launch control which optimizes traction and helps in a lively performance. A dedicated shift-timing indicator helps you watch out for the red-line while accelerating hard.

2020 Hyundai Veloster N Hatchback reaches 0-60 in 5.5 sec.

Out on the real world, you have plenty of grunt on offer at all times. You won't find the motor running out of juice at any point and irrespective of the speed you are in, you will have enough overtaking power left with you.

While taking the power deficit into account, the Hyundai Veloster N manages to keep a name for itself in the acceleration tests. The Civic manages to get the best out of the Hyundai, courtesy of its smaller dimensions and efficient drive train.

How well does the Veloster handle?

Let’s cut to the chase here. The Hyundai Veloster N is the best Handing Hyundai, Period! The Electronically Controlled Steering and Suspension, make driving this Hot Hatch from Hyundai, an absolute hoot on the road. The electronically controlled limited-slip differential intelligently uses torque vectoring for agility at corners and reduces understeer. The Active Exhausts add to the oratory drama of driving this hot hatch and make you tap the throttle harder.

2020 Hyundai Veloster N Hatchback's Front View

Adding to all these, are the big 19” Alloys with sticky Pirelli P Zero rubber that ensures that you don’t lose out on grip, irrespective of the surface you ply this Hyundai on. These tires, however, tend to wear out faster than the other tires but do their job exceedingly well. There is little loss of traction and the sophisticated Suspension and Differential set up, makes for an inspiring overall drive.

There is a dedicated “N” button on the bottom of the steering wheel, which activates optimal performance settings for spirited driving at the track. You can tailor the driving dynamics with a custom mode which basically alters steering weight, engine power, damper setting, ESC and exhaust sound. The electronically controlled suspension continuously reads the road and adjusts the damper firmness for maximum stability and control.

How good are the Brakes on the Veloster?

“With Great Power comes great responsibility” and Hyundai may have taken that quite seriously. The Veloster N is equipped with the 13.6-inch rotor in the front and 12.4 inch ventilated rotors in the rear. The firm pedal inspires confidence and is easy to modulate. The Veloster N also comes with high-performance brakes pads that have been engineered exclusively for better heat dissipation.

2020 Hyundai Veloster N Hatchback has rear brake of 12.2 inches

The traction control uses wheel-speed sensors coupled with ESC algorithms to apply precise braking force to the inside front wheel during spirited cornering.

The Veloster N is the best when it comes to braking performance followed by Civic and the Subaru WRX. The GTI is the worst performer despite its low curb weight.

2020 Hyundai Veloster N Hatchback Fuel Economy

6.0/10

To be honest, it isn't. The Veloster uses a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that uses Atkinson-Cycle for high efficiency and lower emissions. Fuel economy estimates range from 22 miles per gallon city/28 mpg highway/25 mpg combined. These are pretty good numbers considering it is a performance-oriented hot hatch.

While the VW Golf GTI is at the back of the pack in terms of power, it does make up for it somewhat with excellent fuel economy. It's capable of hitting 32 mpg on the highway, and city mileage is rated at a solid 24 mpg. The Veloster N and Civic Type R have similar fuel economies despite the power difference. The Subaru STI is the worst in terms of fuel economy.

2020 Hyundai Veloster N Hatchback Interior

8.2/10

The interior which was inspired by the Kona remains almost unchanged but features higher levels of quality. Like the exterior, the asymmetrical design inside the Veloster is driver-focused. An exclusive N- design front seats have performance-oriented bolstering. They are quite comfortable and there is a clear division between the driver’s and passenger’s sides of the front cabin.

2020 Hyundai Veloster N Hatchback's Front Seats

The second row is tight in legroom and headroom for an average adult. Ingress and Egress into the Front Seats aren’t different than the other hatches but the Single Rear Door may take some time to get used to.

How good is the Veloster N's Infotainment System?

Hyundais have always been loaded with the latest tech on all of their cars and the engineers at Hyundai, haven't missed out on offering the same in the Veloster N as well. You get all the modern nitty-gritty that you would expect from a car at this price and not be left wanting for more.

2020 Hyundai Veloster N Hatchback has an Infotainment Screen of 8 inches.

Despite the long list of features, we do feel that the infotainment system of the same, could have been a bit more intuitive and fine-tuned for just that added convenience. Overall, we don't complain about the lack of features but we expect better as well from the system.

  • 8” Touchscreen infotainment System with 8 Speaker Infinity Audio System with Sub-Woofer
  • Standard Apple Car Play and Android Auto
  • 4.2” Color TFT Instrument Cluster
  • Blue Link Connected Care and Remote Package for 3 Years
  • Bluetooth hands-Free with voice assist and SiriusXM satellite radio
  • Rearview Camera with dynamic guidelines
  • Sped Sensitive auto volume control

How good is the Cargo carrying capacity of the Veloster N?

The 2020 Veloster N offers generous rear cargo capacity, with 19.9 cubic feet of interior volume behind the 2nd-row seat. This can also be increased with the 60/40 rear folding seats to accommodate more cargo.

2020 Hyundai Veloster N Hatchback has a Cargo volume of 19.9 cu.ft.

The lift height is high but you get automatic liftgate access for easy loading and unloading of cargo. In terms of practicality, on the whole, there are plenty of cubby holes and pockets placed all around the Veloster's cabin for storing handy stuff.

The 2020 Hyundai Veloster retains a unique two-plus-one door configuration that seats four people. It merges the design appeal of a sports coupe with a handy third door for easier rear-seat access. The LED headlights with the daytime running lights flank an aggressive cascading grille. Functional air splitters add to the visual appeal of the Veloster with a low stance.

Hyundai Veloster N vs. Honda Civic Type R

The radical-looking Honda Civic Type R impresses in its current avatar in a number of ways. The turbocharged engine is a gem to drive. Honda Engineers have cleverly carved out a lot of space from the Civic’s cabin and is a lot bigger as compared to the Hyundai. In terms of the driving aspect, the Civic Type R sets the benchmark in the segment. The Civic Type R is as potent a track tool as the Veloster but is expensive than the same as well. If you aren’t worried about the prices, pick the Honda but if you wanna save some pennies and still have the same amount of fun, the Hyundai will be a good pick.

2020 Honda Civic Type R

Hyundai Veloster N vs. Subaru WRX STI

The Subaru is bigger in dimensions than the Veloster N and that is evident on the inside. The WRX STI also comes with a standard all-wheel-drive which is not even an option in the Veloster. The overall performance of the WRX feels under-powered when compared to Hyundai’s turbocharged engine. What’s better is the fact that the Hyundai is quite a lot cheaper to buy than the Subaru as well. However, if you have long term reliability and durability on your mind, the Subaru makes a good case for itself against this Korean newbie.

2020 Subaru WRX STI

Hyundai Veloster N vs. Volkswagen Golf GTI

The Golf GTI’s 2.0-liter engine produces 220 hp and comes mated to 6-speed manual transmission which is very rewarding with its slick gear shifts. When it comes to the automatic transmission, the GTI’s DSG is a better performer than Veloster’s 6-speed manual which feels sluggish at lower speeds. The overall performance of the Veloster matches with the Golf. The Hyundai undercuts the Golf GTI in terms of pricing. Competition is neck to neck here but the Veloster is a better overall package.

2020 Volkswagen Golf GTI

2020 Hyundai Veloster N Hatchback Final Verdict

The first-ever product from Hyundai’s Performance Division-N has a lot of things going for it. In typical Hyundai fashion, the 2020 Veloster N, comes at an aggressive starting price and offers a lot more than what equally priced rivals have to offer. Leaving the pricing apart, the Veloster N comes loaded with Equipment that not only adds to the practicality and fun of driving it but makes for a good daily driver as well. Sure, there are better driving or much more powerful cars in the market to choose from but from an Overall Perspective, the 2020 Hyundai Veloster N is a fantastic buy in our minds.
