The 2021 Hyundai Veloster, out for sale now, is completely unchanged over the 2020 model. Prices have been bumped up by $100 per trim and the 2021 Veloster range starts at an MSRP of $18,900. This gets you a standard 2.0L MPI (Naturally Aspirated) engine that produces 147 Horsepower. To get the 201 HP, 1.6L Turbo engine, the top three variants are the only options - Turbo/Turbo R-Spec/Turbo Ultimate, starting at $23,450.
For even more hungry purists, the 275 HP, 2021 Veloster N is the pie you want, priced at $32,250. That said, the standard Hyundai Veloster rivals the Kia Soul, the Toyota Corolla hatchback, and the Volkswagen Golf. However, you do miss out on the 1 extra door offered by others.

Completely refreshed in 2020, the 2021 model is a carryover from the previous year.

Overall Rating
"The 2021 Hyundai Veloster is a quirky three-door hatchback that’s cheap to own and rewarding to drive." - CarAndDriver
The 6-speed manual transmission in the 2021 Veloster lineup is limited to 2 trims only - the 2.0 Base variant ($18,900) and the Turbo R-Spec Variant ($23,450). There's also a 6-speed torque converter paired with the 2.0L motor and the more powerful 1.6 Turbo motor comes fitted with a 7-Speed DCT gearbox as standard.
The interiors of the 2021 Veloster underwent a thorough refreshment last year, so certain necessary features like Hyundai Bluelink Infotainment, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay are standard across the lineup. The 2021 Hyundai Veloster's standard safety features also include Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, and Blind-Spot Collision Warning.

Apart from the new 1.6 Turbo engine in the Turbo Trims, other upgrades over the Veloster 2.0 Trims (2.0, 2.0 Premium) include bigger front brakes (+1 inches), a sport-tuned suspension, steering, and exhaust sound, and bigger 18-inch wheels.
Hyundai offers no options or packages with the 2021 Hyundai Veloster apart from some accessories such as carpet mats, wheel locks ,cargo net, cargo tray, and others. For $28,450, the top of the line 2021 Veloster Turbo Ultimate Trim brings certain features like Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection and Hyundai's Bluelink to the standard feature list.

Rivals like the 2021 Golf and 2021 Corolla go past $25k to offer a similar package, but with one extra door!

"This Hyundai is agile and fun to drive, even more so if you skip the unimpressive base engine for a more thrilling turbocharged power plant." - Cars.usnews.com
The 2021 Hyundai Veloster comes with a 147 HP 2.0L, Naturally Aspirated, Inline-4 motor with 132 lb-ft of torque for 2.0 and 2.0 Premium trims. The Turbo R-Spec, Turbo, and Turbo Ultimate trims are offered with a 1.6L, Turbocharged, Inline-4 engine which outputs 210 Horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque.
There are three transmissions on offer. The base trim 2.0, and the Turbo R Spec get a 6-speed manual transmission, the 2.0 Premium gets a 6-speed Torque Converter (optional on the base 2.0), and the Turbo and Turbo Ultimate trims get a 7-speed DCT as standard. The 7-Speed DCT is also offered with paddle shifters. Irrespective of the gearbox, all trims of the 2021 Veloster are FWD only.
The 2021 Hyundai Veloster 2.0 with 6-speed Auto gearbox goes from 0-60 MPH in 8.8 seconds and the quarter-mile timing stands at 16.6 seconds. The 7-speed DCT-equipped Turbo models achieve the same feat in 7.3 seconds (0-60 MPH) and 15 seconds (Quarter mile time). The new 2021 Golf is faster by 1.2 seconds to 60 MPH and offers more practicality as well!

The 2021 Veloster in the 2.0 trims features a bouncy suspension setup offering incredible ride quality but at the cost of excitement. The Turbo models, with the bigger 12" brake rotors and the sport-tuned suspension dampers make the Veloster worthy enough to be called a hot hatch. The same difference is felt about the steering feel as well.
The 2021 Hyundai Veloster 2.0 with 6AT offers 27 MPG in the city, 34 MPG on the highways, offering a combined mileage of 30 MPG. The 6-speed manual transmission in the base Veloster 2.0 trim drops down the combined fuel economy by 2 MPG.

The 7-speed DCT offered with 1.6L Turbo engine offers the same MPG figures as the 2.0 6AT trims. However, the Turbo R-Spec variant in the 2021 Veloster lineup is offered with the 6-speed manual as standard dropping the city/highway/combined figure to 26/33/29.
The Corolla hatchback and the Golf offer a slightly better fuel economy where Kia Soul is way behind. All the cars have a similar fuel capacity of 13.2 gallons where Kia Soul gets a bigger 14.3-gallon tank. A slight difference in range is not a deal-breaker considering the performance of the Veloster.
"The long driver's door makes it tricky to get in or out in tight spaces, but shorter doors make it easier on the passenger side." - Edmunds.com
The 2021 Veloster offers Sporty treatment all around bringing an all-black interior as standard across all trim levels. The top-of-the-line Turbo Ultimate trim also adds leather seats, a heads-up display, and an 8.0-inch colored touchscreen navigation system to the standard feature list but then it also costs $2,700 more than the Turbo trim. The Turbo trim already offers powered adjustability in the front seats, tilt-and-slide sunroof, and wireless charging as standard, all this for $25,750.
The Hyundai Veloster offers a sub-par room at the rear, significantly less than the Kia Soul and VW Golf. Also, the 2021 Veloster's cargo capacity stands at a meager 19.9 cubic feet, which is good enough for a weekend getaway. If you want to extend it, you can get a 45.5 cubic feet space by folding the rear seat.

Apart from the Turbo Ultimate trim, the 2021 Hyundai Veloster gets an 8.0-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, but the colored navigation stays exclusive to the Turbo Ultimate trim only. The base 2.0 trim gets a smaller 7.0-inch touchscreen unit. You also get the Hyundai Bluelink Satellite navigation Suite with the Turbo models. We didn't appreciate the laggy interface of the smaller 7.0-inch screen, however, the 8.0-inch unit is much fluid in nature.
That said, standard interior and infotainment features offered with the 2021 Hyundai Veloster lineup are:
"You won't mistake the Hyundai Veloster for anything else. With its asymmetrical door layout, there's no other vehicle like the Veloster." - Motortrend.com
The three-door 2021 Veloster is certainly a looker with its pentagon grille flanked by "jewel-like" LED headlamps which come standard with Automatic HighBeam Assist. However, these headlamps stay limited to the Turbo models starting at $23,450. Bigger 18-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires are also an upgrade in the Turbo models over the standard 2.0 Trims. Infact, the Turbo R-Spec Trim comes wrapped with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 soft tires as standard.
The Base 2.0 and 2.0 Premium get a single-outlet center exhaust while the 1.6 Turbo gets dual-center exhausts. The $28,450 Turbo Ultimate also brings a two-tone color scheme with an all-black roof exclusive to its set of features. All Turbo models in the 2021 Veloster lineup also come with a different grille and spoiler over the 2.0 models.

The Veloster manages to stay inside the 3,000 lbs mark. The length is similar to its cousin the Kia Soul and the Volkswagen Golf whereas, the Corolla hatchback is longer by 5 inches. In terms of width, both Veloster and Soul are the widest. Apart from that, here are some of the best Exterior features of the 2021 Hyundai Veloster:
The Hyundai Veloster was ranked the “Top Safety Pick Plus” for the year 2020 for its high safety standards and amazing crash test results. It has not been crash-tested by the NHTSA yet, but we can say it will definitely score 5 out of stars.
The 2021 Hyundai Veloster is equipped with advanced safety such as Lane-keeping assist, Forward collision avoidance, driver attention warning, Blind spot warning, and High-beam assist. It also gets Smart cruise control and Rear cross-traffic warning.
While both offer similar engine options, the 2021 Kia Soul is more of a utilitarian than a performer. The 2021 Soul offers more passenger and cargo volume while the 2021 Veloster is all about bringing smiles to the driver's face. Both come from the same family and the Soul is also cheaper by $500.
The Corolla Hatchback is more reliable but thirsty for fuel. The 2021 Veloster offers much less space inside and cannot keep all 4 people happy at the same time, the 2021 Corolla can. The 2021 Corolla, however, lacks the ability to change directions as quickly as the 2021 Veloster.
Though on the pricy side, the 2021 Golf offers equated performance as the 2021 Veloster, from a smaller engine (meaning more Fuel economy). The 2021 Golf is also larger in size adding more practicality in the form of more interior room and also offers a better warranty package than the Veloster. The 201 HP Veloster Turbo models, however, are much worthy if performance is what you prioritize.
.
The 2021 Veloster is not really the best in the hatchback segment considering you lose out on a lot of other factors, and the 7.3 second 0-60 MPH run from the 201-HP turbo models isn't exactly lightening fast either. So, we'd suggest you refrain from the 2021 Veloster and get a 2021 VW Golf or a 2021 Corolla instead.
