2022 Hyundai Kona Price, Review, Ratings and Pictures

The sub compact SUV segment may not have contenders that seem like serious offerings but it is quite the opposite. The small size makes for extremely agile and fun cars that are good options for the city and even for a short stroll out on the highway. It loses out on space compared to larger SUVs but that does not seem to hold back any of the offerings in terms of features.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The Hyundai Kona has been around for a while and gets a refresh for the model year 2022. It is still offered with anelectric version as well. However we do not have any news yet about the performance oriented N model. The external styling looks more modern and handsome. The interiors, even though haven’t grown much in terms of space look plusher than ever. It starts at a base price of $22,000 (expected) and goes up to almost $30,000 for the fully loaded version.

It competes against theHonda HR-V,Nissan Kicks and theMazda CX-3. Let’s look at the changes for the 2022 model year.

2022 Hyundai Kona Pricing and Features

The all-new 2022 Hyundai Kona is available in four trim options, namely SE, SEL, N-Line, and the limited. The base SE trim is expected to be available at a price of around $22,000 and adds multiple features as standard. The standard 7-inch display from the last year’s model is improved to a standard 8-inch display. Here is a list of the key features that are available with the trims of the 2022 Hyundai Kona.

There is an addition of new N-Line trim in the lineup. It gets a higher output engine that improves the overall performance of the vehicle. There is also an inclusion of better safety features along with driver-assistive technologies that helps improve the safety factor of the vehicle. The top of the line Limited trim is available at a price of $28,000 and gets the best features without an exponential increase in the pricing.

2022 Hyundai Kona Engine and Performance

One gets the option of choosing fromtwo different engines for the Kona - a 2 L GDI in-line four and 1.6 L turbocharged GDI in-line four. GDI stands for gasoline direct injection and is the technology that powers most of Hyundai’s engines these days. The base engine offered, the 2 L is capable of producing 147 hp. The 1.6 Turbo is much more capable, producing 175 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. There are two transmissions on offer- a six speed Shiftronic as well as a slick seven speed dual clutch transmission.

These options remain unchanged from the previous model years. The base engine may seem a bit underpowered but we’re sure that the 1.6 turbo can fix this feeling. It is certainly much faster than its rivals that are equipped with sluggish CVT gearboxes. All the cars have front-wheel drive layouts and hence do not have any specific advantage against one another.

The Kona can also be equipped with an all-wheel drive transmission. The 2 L engine propels the Kona to 60 mph from a standing start at a rather lethargic 9.2 seconds and past the quarter-mile marker at 16.8 seconds.

The Kona has one of the most powerful engines in its segment bettered by only theMazda CX-3. But the Mazda also has an advantage when it comes to the torque figure which is greater than any of its class. This results in the best 0 to 60 as well as quarter-mile times. But the Kona has the last word when it comes to top speed. However, bring in the 1.6 L turbo engine and the all-wheel drive powertrain and you finish the naught to 60 in a mere 6.6 seconds.

How is the braking and handling of the 2022 Kona?

There isn't any data about the drive experience that the 2022 Kona offers, however we can base the same on the previous model year. The 2021 Hyundai Kona offers a decent drive experience and handles pretty well even in the sharpest of curves.

2022 Hyundai Kona Fuel Economy

One of the advantages of having a small car with a small engine is that it is fuel-efficient. The same goes for the Kona asit returns 30 MPG combined and has a large fuel tank with 13.2 gallon capacity. These are certainly impressive figures and amounts to a range of 392 miles which is very impressive.

The Nissan Kicks has the best fuel efficiency figures by far. However since the Nissan returns much lesser power figures when compared to the Kona this is entirely not an impressive figure. That said theMazda is the most impressive since it has the second best fuel efficiency ratings while having a lot more power. When it comes down to total range however, the Kona with its huge fuel tank helps it have an approximately similar range compared to the Mazda.

2022 Hyundai Kona Interior

Theinteriors of the Kona have been redesigned especially the dashboard and this includes a few new optional extras. There is a digital gauge display available, wireless smartphone charging as well as heated rear seats. The sunroof makes the cabin airy, the leather upholstery is good and the driver's seat is power adjustable.

The ergonomics make for a very comfortable experience when using the car. Even though the cargo space was not very impressive it certainly felt enough for the car’s use.

Even though all the cars are incredibly practical and offer a decent amount of interior space, it isnot one of the Kona’s strengths. In terms of interior space, they are all just adequate, nothing extravagant. The Nissan Kicks and theHonda HR-V offer more space both in the cabin as well as for cargo. Seating capacity of all cars are identical and suitable for five adults.

How intuitive is the 2022 Hyundai Kona’s infotainment unit?

Infotainment features are also excellent on the Kona. You get an eight inch touchscreen infotainment system as standard which can be upgraded to an 10.3 inch touchscreen. It can be operated by shortcut buttons that help you switch between menus. If you opt for higher end versions you get a head-up display. You also get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This can be upgraded to a wireless system as well

2022 Hyundai Kona Exterior

The exterior styling is contemporary and can be described as funky. It certainly mirrors the attitude of the car and hence does not look out of place. We feel that with the current redesign, it has matured a bit more and will appeal to a wider audience.

On the N line trim, one can find a lot of sporty details that make the car quite a looker.

Even though theHyundai Kona is not much larger than its competitors in most exterior dimensions, it is the heaviest of the lot. And they mean by almost 200 lbs.The Honda HR-V is the longest car and the tallest but the Kona is the widest. The ground clearance is a very capable 6.7 inches.

2022 Hyundai Kona Safety

The Hyundai Kona rewrites the bad reputation that has plagued cars from the brand for a long time. It was rated by the NHTSA foran overall five-star rating which is the highest any car can get. Not only this, but it also has five-star ratings for every subcategory except one, which was a rollover rating. The safety features include but are not restricted to:-

  • Smart cruise control
  • Parking Distance control
  • ABS with ESC
  • Traction control with brake assist
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System with individual tire indicator
  • Blind-spot collision warning
  • Lane change assist
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning System

2022 Hyundai Kona Final Verdict

The Hyundai Kona is an excellent crossover in the sub compact SUV range. At the price starting at just $ 22,000, it is excellent value for money and promises to deliver much more than it makes you pay for. We feel that models like the Limited trim that come with adequate optional extras can even be considered a luxurious car. Hence we would definitely recommend somebody who wants to buy a Kona to proceed with their decision. Hyundai has also improved on its weak points and offers class leading warranty so one can buy the car with peace of mind. You could also consider going in for a used Kona, the value for your money is going to be simply amazing.

A Capable Compact Subaru!

Pros - "Upscale cabin Easy-to-use infotainment system Energetic turbocharged engine available"

Cons - "Lacks advanced smartphone connectivity features Central touch screen controls most functions and can be distracting"

The luxuarious one Hyundai Kona Electric Ultimate in 2021. This is a truly remarkable car. The range of 258 miles is not an underestimate. The Ultimate has a lot of cool features. The heads-up show is very useful. The cruise control sets the speed and distance from the vehicle ahead of you automatically. Jodi and Kevin were great through the whole process. They took care of everything by email and text, and then after a three hour drive they got me out the door in my new car in less than an hour.

KONA- a decent ride

Pros - Pretty much space for a small hatchback, heads up display, wireless charging

Cons - Secon row is cramped, single zone climate control, a lot of plastics.

eclectronically adjustable seats, electronic stability control, blind spot monintor, heads up display The downshifts are not quick as it should be, acceleration is quick, It has good amount of veisibillity ad good handling. $31385 including shipping charges soft touch leather finish seats and side doors feel nice, the seats are well bolstered and are perforated. The palisade kind of grill in the front with nice LEDs in the front and back and sloping hood makes it look good , the rims atr blase type and 18" which accent it well. Good rating from IIHs and 5 star overall rating from NHTSA. very good

Supercar 2021

Pros - Eye-catching styling, comfortable interior.

Cons - Higher pricetag than some rivals; Interior space for two occupants

a premium interior, solid driving feel, loads of power, precise steering; what else does one need from a car. Oh and one more , A "launch" feature propels the car forward as quickly as possible from a standstill. a premium interior, solid driving feel, loads of power, precise steering; what else does one need from a car. Oh and one more , A "launch" feature propels the car forward as quickly as possible from a standstill. Hybrid vehicles are more efficient in stop-and-go city traffic than their gasoline-only rivals, and the NSX is no different. The NSX comes with an MSRP of about $157,500. The interior of the NSX is decidedly upscale. Soft leather covers almost every surface and is accented with red stitching. Various aluminum accents are scattered throughout. There are also thin front roof pillars, which help give the sleek Acura exceptional forward visibility.
