Powered by an efficient and practical naturally aspirated V6 engine, the Honda Pilot despite its mammoth scale, returns an average fuel efficiency of 22 MPG and scores well on reliability and performance

The vehicle is fairly powerful and deploys good amenities inside the car that adds value to its purchase. The Honda Pilot is offered in 6 trims that range from the entry-level LX trim which is priced at  $32,250 and goes all the way to the top-of-the-line Black Edition which is priced at $49,920. However, if you ask us which one should be bought we can surely offer positive advice on the Honda Pilot Black Edition, and the Special Edition trim that goes great for their features and justifies the price.

Is buying a Used Honda Pilot any good idea?

The used car market is filled with a lot of options, but buying a car is a responsible task. Hence if you are smart enough to negotiate you can drive home a car that is in its perfect condition and a fair-owned car price. If you don't know the right car for your use then this can be really hectic work and might end up costing you more than a new one.

Buying a used or pre-owned Honda Pilot can be a good idea for it can save you a great deal of money. However, if you are looking to purchase a pre-owned car such as a Honda Pilot, do check our listing of Pre-owned cars for hassle-free buying and great offers from certified used car dealers.

2021 Honda Pilot Engine and Performance

8.2/10

The 2021 Honda Pilot is known for its reliable and efficient performance which makes it the ride of choice for soccer moms and business executives alike. However, the Honda Pilot is one of those few mid-size crossovers that offer a naturally aspirated V6 engine. This efficient 3.5-liter i-Vtec engine belts out an impressive 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft. of torque and at 5000 rpm when the V-tech kicks in.

2021 Honda Pilot SUV has a 3.5L V6 engine

The 2021 Honda Pilot brings a few changes to its existing powertrain that now includes a ZF-sourced 9 speed automatic transmission as standard across all trims, hence replacing the clunky six-speed automatic unit. The Pilot’s V6 engine sounds impressive and sporty for such a huge vehicle and offers plenty of power.

On comparing the Ford Explorer performance beats the Honda Pilot with a slightly more powerful motor. Ford’s Ti-VCT engine pulls out 288 horsepower which is closely followed by Honda’s 280 hp output and remains the best in the segment.

The Toyota Highlander produces the least power at 185hp which and with an MSRP of $34,810, costs almost $2600 more than the entry-level of the Pilot, making this the Highlander the worst deal for those who priorities performance over other things. On the contrary, the Subaru offers the segment-best torque figures with its turbocharged 2.4L 4 cylinder engine that comes with 260 horsepower and 277 lb.-ft. Of torque and with a Price tag of $31,295 is also the most affordable in this lineup.

2021 Honda Pilot Acceleration And Braking Performance

With the 280 hp naturally aspirated V6 engine, the Honda Pilot is capable of doing a 0-60 in just 6.2 seconds. This being said the Honda Pilot is fairly fast for being a three-row SUV. The Honda Pilot ZF sourced gearbox is praiseworthy and the most happening one to drive as it prioritizes more on efficiency and is nimble on tracks.

2021 Honda Pilot accelerates from 0-60 mph in 6.2 sec

However, the 2021 Honda Pilot’s engine responds well even at low rpm despite having a naturally aspirated engine and at higher rpm, it comes into its own which is a typical Honda trait. Not the fastest SUV in the mid-size segment but it sure puts down the power in a linear manner which makes it suitable for both swift city runs and long highway cruises and the AWD does accelerate faster and provide better cornering grip than the 2WD version at a premium $2000 which is a price worth paying especially if you plan to use the Pilot as an all-season SUV.

2021 Honda Pilot Fuel Economy

7.1/10

The 2021 Honda Pilot continues to be as economical as ever with the best EPA fuel economy among the three-row SUVs. The 2021 Honda Pilot’s gas mileage is estimated at 19 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. This data was compiled based on driving the Honda Pilot AWD at an average speed of 75 mph on both city and highway driving conditions, however, passengers were not included inside.

Comparatively, the Fuel Economy of the Subaru Ascent and the fuel economy of the Toyota Highlander is better in city driving conditions. However, with the strongest engine in its class, the Ford Explorer is the least fuel-efficient but still, it returns good figures. 2021 Honda Pilot Interior

8.3/10

It is always hard to find a three-row SUV that compliments itself with an excellent interior. The Honda Pilot turns out to be one of the best three-row SUV in terms of overall interior usability. The practically laid out cabin uses quality materials and has clean interior lines with well laid out controls for everything. For 2021, the LX trim gets the addition of dual-zone automatic climate control, which makes this one of the very few SUVs in this segment that offer dual-zone climate control as standard.

2021 Honda Pilot can seat up to 8-passengers

It comes with soft-touch materials on the dashboard and offers a spacious cabin that can comfortably accommodate eight passengers and seven if you opt for the optional captain's seats which are available with the Touring trims at a cost of $300. The Black edition trim of the Honda Pilot gets exclusive black-on-black seat upholstery with red lining stitch and black and red accents on the interior panels for a sportier aesthetic which is a bargain considering the SE sits right in the middle of the trim table with a price tag of $38,960 for the 2WD version.

2021 Honda Pilot offers an optional 7-seater version

The 2021 Honda Pilot also makes room for luxury features that are standard across all the trims, such as Dual-zone climate control which is standard across the trim range for 2021, and automatic start-stop functionality. If you want added luxury then the Touring Trim with its MSRP of $43,220, offers great value as a chauffer-driven SUV that can fly under the radar.

The bulky three-row Honda Pilot offers seating for up to seven passengers. The third-row turns out to be practical and useful and can accommodate adults in the 3rd row even on longer journeys which are not something that can be said for Toyota's Highlander which has a significantly more cramped 3rd row. The seats have nice cushioning and offer seat heating on higher trims. Even the second row has a flat floor that provides plenty of foot space.

What are the Creature Comfort features in the Honda Pilot?

Honda Pilot might not receive a good Infotainment package, but when it comes to comfort features it rules the segment. The list of comfort features is given below.

  • Push Button Start
  • Power Door and Tailgate Locks
  • Cruise Control
  • Tilt and Telescopic Steering Column
  • Multi-Functional Center Console Storage

2021 Honda Pilot Exterior

7.2/10

The Honda Pilot brings about a more aggressive look in the front. The Honda Pilot received a revised front and rear fascia and design that looks sharper now with character lines on the body. The Pilot gets LED headlights that are standard across the trim line.

2021 Honda Pilot gets large LED headlamps

The broad chrome grille with piano black inserts below hands it aggressive and premium style. The tail-lights complement the rear design and go well with its bulky structure. Honda has inserted subtle elements to freshen the Pilot’s looks. The Black Edition trim gets a unique blacked-out front grille with smoked headlamps, and blacked-out exterior features.

2021 Honda Pilot Competition

8.1/10

2021 Honda Pilot Vs the Ford Explorer

The 2021 Ford Explorer is one of the oldest players in the three-row SUV segment. Equipped with a V6 engine that belts out 288 horsepower, it is one of the most powerful in the comparison. It has a lot of positives like a spacious cabin, mild off-roading capacity, and the option to choose from a lot of three engines.

Ford Explorer SUV

While the Honda has a solely 3.5 Liter V6 naturally aspirated unit on offer. Like the Honda Pilot, the Ford Explorer also offers similar features and comfort. It gets better infotainment and safety features, however, the Honda Pilot benefits from its affordable price and unique distribution of features across the trim levels.

2021 Honda Pilot Vs the Toyota Highlander

The 2021 Toyota Highlander is equipped with a 2.7-liter inline-four engine that makes just 185 hp and 184 lb-ft. of torque and is lower than the Honda Pilot. This power output isn’t good for a three-row SUV. The Toyota Highlander does offer a reliable drive but its ride quality falls short of the Honda Pilot. However, the competition becomes fair enough with the Highlander equipped with the V6 engine.

Toyota Highlander

Toyota Highlander loses to Pilot’s value for money appeal in the lower trims. Considering the available options and value for the base model. It is also shy about safety and comfort features and does not offer an enjoyable drive like the Pilot.

2021 Honda Pilot Final Verdict

If you ask us, should you buy the Honda Pilot or not? Well, of course, you should if you need a 7 seater three-row SUV that is good at performance, drives well, is comfortable inside and you don't have any problem with its bulky size on the city drives. However, it is one of the most valuable SUVs that offer practicality and great usability for its price. The engine is absolutely refined and reliable making it a positive note for buyers. Though it is not impressive at things but does its job really well.

2020 Honda Pilot is a good car with few downsides.

Pros - Keyless ignition, Good Warranty period, and Cruise control.

Cons - Lacking good acceleration response, limited legroom for the back rows

Overall Review

7 /10 Overall Rating

While driving on the highway, to get enough acceleration I need to step on the pedal from time to time to get enough power to merge fast on the freeway. For this size, I'm sure a bigger engine would have come in handy

Cons - None

10 /10 Overall Rating

Pretty decent I would say. It is not very fast but it is not slow either. The ride quality is good. The 6-speed automatic is very precise in its gear shifts.

Honda Pilot- the story of a decent car

Pros - Technology, interior design, safety

Cons - Cargo, adaptive cruise control

Overall Review

8 /10 Overall Rating

Pilot is a good drive, just don? trust the cruise control too much. In my experience cruise control is a little unreliable. Other than that there are no issues about the driving dynamics.

On my driving, it? giving a good competitive gas mileage and ample towing ability to easily drive with more passengers back.

Compact SUV

When talking about performance, Pilot is not the best, to say the least. It has a poor pickup when compared with the competition. The handling is good but power or speed is lacking.
