The 2021 Honda Insight offers various feature additions and driver assistance features as part of the new upgrades for this year. Offered a total of 3 trims, namely LX, EX, and Touring, the brand has made sure to give the customers everything that they could possibly need with the 2021 Insight. Starting at a price of $22,930 with the LX trim, they escalate to $28,840 at the top end with the Touring trim with a stop at $24,820 for the EX trim. One of the most significant upgrades for this year is the addition of the Honda Sensing safety suite across all trims and some of the best features like Blind Spot Assist being added to the EX trim. Powered by a 1.5L naturally aspirated inline-4 cylinder engine, it comes with a dual motor setup along with it, all of which are tamed by a CVT as standard. Despite being a hybrid, you only get FWD as the standard fitment to keep costs low.

2021 Honda Insight

In the cabin, you get the bigger 8-inch infotainment screen along with most of the infotainment features from the mid-tier EX trim, while the Touring trim takes a turn towards the premium side with bigger wheels and leather upholstery. With its charismatic and driver-centric approach to the road, the 2021 Honda Insight certainly strikes a chord with the audience, which does not sit too well with its competitors. Being a reliable and practical daily driver, the 2021 Honda Insight competes against the king of reliability's hybrid veteran, the Toyota Prius, and the Korean royalty, the Hyundai Ioniq. Carrying forward the legacy of the generational change it got in 2019, the Honda Insight certainly tries to go for glory, but how far it goes in its track is yet to be seen.

Overall Rating

The 2021 Honda Insight is getting feature additions and driver assistance technologies as part of the planned upgrades for this year. Offered in a choice of 3 trims, namely LX, EX, and Touring, it gets a 1.5L naturally aspirated inline-4 powertrain that works in conjunction with dual electric motors that power up the front wheels. The hybrid system offers a combined power output of 151 hp and 189 lb-ft of torque. The transmission of choice is CVT which puts the power to the front wheels through the FWD drivetrain which is the only option here.

The LX trim kicks off the lineup with a starting MSRP of $22,930 with barebones of features. The EX trim with a price tag of $24,820 upgrades to a bigger touchscreen system, added infotainment features and added driver assistance features. The Touring trim serves as the flagship offering with the best features thrown ranging from cosmetics like 17-inch wheels to the top of the line safety features like Blind-Spot Assist with a sticker price of $28,840. With its penchant to being a driver-centric offering, it faces competition from the Hyundai Ioniq and the Toyota Prius.

7.7/10

The 2021 Honda Insight leaves no stone unturned in order to put its best foot forward by being offered in a choice of 3 feature-rich trims, namely LX, EX, and Touring. The lineup starts at a price of $22,930 with the LX trim and goes all the way up to $28,840 for the top of the line Touring trim. All of the trims are powered by a 1.5L naturally aspirated inline-4 cylinder engine that works in tandem with an electric motor powering up the front wheels. Despite being a hybrid, the 2021 Honda Insight is offered as an FWD only.

The EX trim gets some significant upgrades for this year with a minuscule bump in the offer price at $24,810. One of the most welcome changes for all the trims this year is the adoption of the Honda Sensing safety suite as standard fitment which surely ups the ante in terms of safety.

The  EX trim with an MSRP of $24,810 starts to make things interesting. It adds remote engine start, SiriusXM satellite radio, an upgraded 8-speaker system, Honda Lane Watch, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration to justify its price tag.

The Touring trim is the flagship offering with a sticker price of $28,840. At this price, you get the best features like power-adjustable and heated front seats with leather upholstery, a 10-speaker sound system, satellite navigation, 17-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires, and automatic dual-zone climate control to make good on its promise of being the best one of the lot.

2021 Honda Insight hybrid Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

2021 Honda Insight Reliability Ratings and Recalls

Honda has always been at the forefront of reliable daily drivers from the start and the 2021 Honda Insight is no different as it scored a reliability rating of 4 out of 5 stars and a reliability score of 77 out of a possible 100 from J.D. Power. These scores are derived from user feedbacks and reviews on some parameters, the details of which are as follows:

Parameter Score out of 100 Verdict
Quality and Reliability 75 Great
Driving Experience 77 Great
Dealership Experience 78 Great
Resale 80 Great

Thankfully the Honda Insight has had a fairly clean track record in terms of recalls as the ride saw just the one recall with the 2020 Insight. This recall pertained to a faulty fuel pump that could result in the engine stalling. Hopefully, the 2021 Honda Insight will finally get things right and move through the year with a clean streak.

2021 Honda Insight Cost of Ownership

Building economical cars is like second nature for Honda as all of their cars are built to remain affordable on the pocket. The 2021 Honda Insight stays true to this ideology and remains the frugal family driver as the true cost to own for 5-years will stand at about $32,000 for the base LX trim. The majority of these costs will be incurred in the first year as the depreciation, state taxes, and financing fees are highest in the first year.

Thankfully, from the second year itself, the severity of these costs will reduce and you will find the costs drop drastically. From the third year, you will find the maintenance and fuel costs rising, but never will they ever reach the levels where they can cross the ownership costs of the first year. If you want to offset these ownership costs in the long term to the tune of up to 20%, you can pick up an extended warranty plan with periodic maintenance at the time of purchasing the car.

2021 Honda Insight Warranty

While Honda is known for building reliable cars, the standard bumper-to-bumper warranty on the 2021 Honda Insight is rather short-sighted for the price you pay at 3 years or 36,000 miles; whichever comes first. The powertrain warranty is in place for 5 years or 60,000 miles; whichever comes first and so does the 24x7 roadside assistance. The following are the other coverages in the warranty statement:

Criteria

Period

Limited warranty

3 years / 36,000 miles; whichever is earlier

Powertrain warranty

5 years / 60,000 miles; whichever is earlier

Corrosion Warranty 5 years / unlimited miles

Hybrid components warranty

8 years / 100,000 miles; whichever is earlier

If you are on the same page as us and consider the standard warranty as too short, you can opt for the extended warranty plan which the brand calls Honda Care. If you pick it up during the tenure of the standard warranty, you can cover your Insight for a total of 8 years or 130,000 miles; whichever happens earlier. This will cover all the components and give you the peace of mind that comes with buying a Honda car.

Miles Per Dollar

Considering that you pick up the 2021 Honda Insight to be your daily driver and cover 16,000 miles per year, you will be able to cover about 14.5 miles per dollar that you spend on it. Consecutively, you will be spending about 6.8 cents per mile that you drive it around.

2021 Honda Insight hybrid Buying Advice

8.0/10

With a perfect blend of comfort, tech, and price, the mid-tier EX trim strikes the as the best value for money option to be picked up for the 2021 Honda Insight. Though it misses out on the true premium features like the leather upholstery, it includes the basic goodies like the bigger infotainment screen, remote start, keyless entry, in a minutely upgraded price tag of $24,810.

Is buying a used Honda Insight Hybrid a good idea?

The 2021 Honda Insight is part of the very generation that came to the scene in 2019. Taking into account the comfort factor of the longer sedan body, hybrid engine, and Honda's quintessential habit of being reliable, and you are looking at a winning combo for a used car. Hence, it seems like a great option to buy a used Honda Insight. While it may be a bit tedious to find a used Honda Insight right now, you can check out the great deals we have on used Honda cars if you don't want to tread out in these uncertain times.

Honda cars lose about 23% of their value in the first year and then go on to lose an equivalent amount more by the end of year 4. By the time the fifth year of ownership is completed, Hondas loses about 50% of their value. If looks are something that you are willing to forgo, then you can pick up a 2016 or 2017 Honda vehicles as both of them would be pretty affordable to buy in today's time. And if you have the knack for negotiation, you can easily carve out a great deal for yourself by using depreciation to your benefit.

2021 Honda Insight hybrid Engine and Performance

6.5/10

The 2021 Honda Insight carries forward the same 1.5L naturally aspirated inline-4 cylinder engine that it got with the generational change in 2019. This powertrain works in tandem with a pair of electric motors that power up the front wheels and even take the reins from the powertrain when the ride hits cruising speeds. The combined power output from the system stands at 151 hp along with 189 lb-ft of torque. Like most of the other Honda vehicles, the 2021 Honda Insight also adopts the CVT transmission that tames the power and puts it on the front wheels as standard.

2021 Honda Insight hybrid engine

Despite being a hybrid vehicle, the absence of an AWD drivetrain might stick out like a sore thumb for money, especially with the kind of money you spend on it along and taking into account the recent track record of AWD-friendly hybrids. That being said the FWD drivetrain is actually a boon in disguise as it allows the ride to be much more agile than it might come across as. Furthermore, the hybrid units are honed enough to help pump up the MPG figures as well which is also a big plus with a whopping 55 MPG in the city.

Compared to the others in the lineup, the Honda Insight falls somewhere in the middle as the Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid takes the top spot both in terms of the price tag it comes with. The quirky yet well experienced Toyota Prius Hybrid is actually the most underpowered and the costliest of the lot despite the years of experience it has.

2021 Honda Insight Hybrid Acceleration and Braking Performance

The 2021 Honda Insight is might carry a conventional powertrain underneath, but the electric motor setup definitely makes all the difference as it completes the 0-60 mph sprint in 7.7 seconds. For completing the quarter-mile, the ride does run out of breath as it takes 16.2 seconds to complete that distance but never does it feel like it wants to give up.

2021 Honda Insight completes the 0-60 mph run in just 7.7 sec

Being the "upgraded" Civic, the 2021 Honda Insight also gets a well-honed braking setup that inspires confidence. There is no need of "getting used" to it as the pedal is definitely a familiar feel like any other Honda car. When the push comes to shove, the 2021 Insight can stop from 60-0 mph in 123 feet. Even under duress, the ride maintains composure and does not feel jittery when you pump the brakes.

Bearing in mind the fact that these are daily driving family cars, the Honda Insight still manages to take the edge in providing you with a certain sense of thrill. The Hyundai Ioniq, despite being adequately powerful is in a true sense a slowpoke. The Toyota Prius actually surprises as it slots itself in the middle and finds the second spot.

2021 Honda Insight Handling and Drive Experience

The Honda Civic has often been the benchmark in terms of being a driver-centric car for the budget segment. The 2021 Honda Insight is only slightly bigger and hence furnishes the same type of driving dynamics in order to ensure that you get the full feel of the drive. The steering wheel is well weighted and works in perfect unison with the suspension setup to give you ample control of where the sedan is heading. Road imperfections are quashed out at the road level itself and you will definitely find it as a boon when your young ones lull into a slumber in the comfortable rear seats.

The 2021 Honda Insight offers a very pleasurable driving experience for the price it asks

CVTs are known to mum down the performance capabilities of the powertrains, but Honda actually manages to imbue their transmissions with liveliness and that shows when you are out on the highways with the Insight. Whether you are out on the highway, going down a long winding road, or just commuting back and forth, you will not find any qualms as the ride quality remains smooth and serene at all times. Despite being bigger than the Civic, the Insight actually makes room for a more evolved driving behavior that will definitely put a smile on your face.

2021 Honda Insight hybrid Fuel Economy

8.0/10

The 1.5L inline-4 powertrain on the 2021 Honda Insight is a fuel frugal powerbox and works in perfect unison with the hybrid system to offer great MPG figures. You can get a whopping 55 MPG in the city, 49 MPG on the highway, and 52 MPG combined. The fuel tank is on the smaller side with a total capacity of 10.6 gallons, which allows you to get a total range of 551 miles overall after a full fuel refill.

At this kind of range, you will not find any hassles in daily driving as you are more than covered to go anywhere without the worry of "running out of juice mid-way". This is also one of the benefits of the "charging while driving" approach which allows the hybrid system to charge itself through regenerative braking and day-to-day driving. Hence, you get a lot more than you expected at a price that is a lot less than you could imagine with the 2021 Honda Insight.

Despite having a great driving economy, the Honda Insight actually sits out at the bottom as the Hyundai Ioniq takes the center stage with its spectacular MPG figures. The Toyota Prius is the veteran in this game, however, loses out on the highway economy front which is where the Hyundai races ahead.

2021 Honda Insight hybrid Interior

8.3/10

The interiors of the 2021 Honda Insight are not something that would impress you straight away, but will surely not disappoint you either. There is a lot of use of hard plastics but does not feel tacky in any way. The steering wheel gets leather upholstery as standard to suffice for the price it asks. The dashboard has a lot of things going on ranging from the various in-vehicular functionality control to the infotainment screen. Thankfully, it exudes a premium vibe once you take a seat inside.

The interiors of the 2021 Honda Insight are spacious, comfortable, and feature-rich

You get 5-seats with cloth upholstery as standard in the base LX trim while the EX trim adds more features to the infotainment system mostly. The Touring trim upgrades to leather upholstery that is stay-cool capable. Irrespective of which upholstery you get, the seats are actually quite comfortable and offer ample room and adjustability so that even the tall ones among us will not find any complaints with their purchase.

One of the best parts of the liftback inspired the design of the 2021 Honda Insight is that it gets amply spacious interiors in comparison to the Ioniq and Prius. The rear seats sit on top of the hybrid battery pack, but this does not mean that it bites into the cabin space as there is ample room to be seated comfortably. The headroom could be a hindrance if you are over 6'2", otherwise that will also remain comfortable. The best part is that even when you are in full capacity, there is a certain sense of comfort that is still there and you don't feel cramped in any way. The other highlights of the interiors of the 2021 Honda Insight are:

  • 5-inch digital driver display
  • Power Windows with Auto-Up/Down Front Windows
  • Power Door Locks
  • Cruise Control
  • Leather-wrapped multifunction Steering Wheel with Tilt and Telescopic adjustment
  • LED Ambient Console Lighting
  • Center Console with Sliding Armrest and Storage Compartment

2021 Honda Insight Infotainment System

The 2021 Honda Insight gets a welcome change in terms of infotainment screen as compared to the Civic it gets a floating 8-inch touchscreen as the primary unit in the EX and Touring trim. For the base LX trim, you get a 7-inch touchscreen system that is mostly barebones in its approach. Depending on the trim, the sound system varies but in no way is it lacking even in its base outlook. The LX trim offers a 6-speaker setup while the EX trim offers an 8-speaker sound system. The Touring trim upgrades to a full-blown 10-speaker system that can truly immerse you in music for the price it extracts.

2021 Honda Insight Hybrid infotainment system

The system is feature-packed and intuitive and does not take long to get used to. With features like Bluetooth, WiFi, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, there are ample ways to interact with the ride to keep yourself entertained while you are out on the roads. The noteworthy features of this setup are:

  • 7/8-inch touchscreen infotainment
  • 6/8/10- speaker sound system
  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio
  • HD Radio
  • Android Auto
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Pandora
  • Bluetooth
  • WiFi Hotspot
  • Speed-Sensitive Volume Control
  • Honda Link
  • USB
  • Satellite Navigation
  • SMS Text Function

Irrespective of which trim you choose, the brand has made full provisions that you get your money's worth in terms of the infotainment capabilities, all of which are more than well equipped to keep you entertained.

2021 Honda Insight Cargo Space

Honda has always made sure to offer practicality along with an affordable price for all its cars, and the 2021 Honda Insight is certainly no stranger to this approach. However, the standard cargo space of 15.1 cu-ft seems to undercut the case to quite an extent for the 2021 Insight. This is particularly one arena where the influence from the Civic and the liftback inspired design certainly harm its case.

The 2021 Honda Insight offers 15.1 cu-ft of cargo space which is ample for day-to-day usage

Thankfully the rear seats are foldable and you can open the cabin up to get more space to carry along stuff. There are also a lot of cubby spaces like the door pockets, glovebox, and center console that can double back to help you carry more stuff along in daily travel.

Cargo Capacity 15.1 cu-ft  23.0 cu-ft 27.4 cu-ft

Compared to the others, the Toyota Prius' smaller cabin makes way for the bigger cargo space which propels it to the top in this regard. The Hyundai Ioniq comes in the second spot while the Honda Insight languishes out in the rough in the last spot.

7.0/10

Honda has done a magnificent job in terms of designing the 2021 Insight, as the simple yet elegant approach comes together excellently. The Insight's segmentation falls between the Accord and the Civic, so that is pretty much the reason why many comparisons are drawn with both of those. While the Insight's design has its own individuality, you cannot help but notice the likeness to the Accord at times. The front end is bound together by the chrome grille and the LED Headlamps, both of which grant a certain level of edginess to the smooth flowing lines.

2021 Honda Insight looks elegant with its simple and smooth flowing design.

From the side, you will see the silhouette of the Honda Civic screaming out at you as the 2021 Honda Insight follows the fastback inspired construction style as seen in the Civic. Riding on uniquely made 16-inch wheels with all-season tires, they come into full view when you move to the side. Also, you will instantly notice that despite being very closely related to the Honda Accord, the 2021 Insight is actually closer to the Honda Civic dimensionally at a total length of 180-inches.

Among the three, both the Honda Insight and the Hyundai Ioniq do an excellent job of looking sharp and exciting. In contrast, the Toyota Prius simply is the quirkiest looking car in the segment despite having the advantage of being the first one in the business.

The rear end of the 2021 Honda Insight carries its own distinctive identity that is different from the Accord or Civic.

From the rear end, the 2021 Honda Insight adorns its own unique identity and looks like a daily driver. The following are the standout features of the exteriors of the 2021 Honda Insight:

  • 16/17-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires

2021 Honda Insight Hybrid Vs. 2021 Hyundai Ioniq

The 2021 Hyundai Ioniq is as close as can be to the Honda Insight in terms of dimensional equivalence. It comes with the quintessential Hyundai promise of style with substance but fails to make a mark as its power and torque figures are far below the segment average. However, that helps in pumping up the MPG figures that are marginally better than the 2021 Insight.

 2021 Hyundai Ioniq

The 2021 Honda Insight offers the right balance of power, practicality, style, and price which allows it to knock the ball right out of the park and come out as the preferred option here.

2021 Honda Insight Hybrid Vs. 2021 Toyota Prius

The 2021 Toyota Prius can be called the one that kicked-off the hybrid vehicle race from back in the day, however, in today's time, it seems like a ride from another era. It comes at a higher price tag and the design language seems awkward while the rear cabin and headroom also take a hit in terms of spaciousness. That being said, it is certainly the more economical option over the long term, along with the tell-tale Toyota reliability.

2021 Toyota Prius

The Prius has been one of the top-sellers for the brand in its alternative vehicles lineup and we do not see its momentum slowing down anytime soon. The Insight actually looks much more classy and offers a lot more room to make a more practical option and more or less tries to match the Prius in terms of reliability as well.

2021 Honda Insight hybrid Final Verdict

Carrying the full weight and responsibility of being a hybrid from Honda, the 2021 Honda Insight manages to make good on its promises and brings a value for money proposition to the table in its overall build. With a feature-packed and comfortable design, the price tag is surely justified as it offers a little something for everyone out there. Furthermore, in a world obsessed with SUVs and crossovers, Insight with its sedan build actually tries to keep the segment alive and kicking. Hence, if you want a comfortable and spacious family driver that also helps in keeping the environment healthy at a bargain price, the 2021 Honda Insight is definitely the one to pick.
